David Daniels, PhD, CSD, VPS, and special guest Andy Kearney, with deep experience in higher education, who focused on not just the academic success of students but on a journey that considers their psychological health and safety as well. Andy is a graduate of Georgia State University and a member of their Alumni Association Board of Directors. Psychological health and safety is crucial for college students for several reasons: · Mental Well-being: College life can be stressful, with academic pressures, social dynamics, and possibly being away from home for the first time. Maintaining good psychological health helps students manage stress and anxiety. · Academic Performance: Mental health significantly impacts cognitive functions like concentration, memory, and problem-solving. Students with good psychological health are more likely to perform well academically. · Social Relationships: Healthy psychological well-being helps students build and maintain positive relationships with peers, faculty, and family. It also fosters a supportive and inclusive campus environment. · Safety and Prevention: Ensuring psychological safety helps prevent issues like depression, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts. Colleges with robust mental health support systems can identify and assist students in need more effectively. · Inclusive Environment: Promoting psychological health creates an inclusive and supportive campus culture where all students can thrive, regardless of their background or personal challenges. Andy will share his passion for student success, his journey as a first-generation college student and the child of immigrants, and some of the stories of students he has worked with.

Why some disabled workers make $1 an hour

At the Pathways to Independence program in Kearny, N.J., disabled workers sort clothing hangers and unload boxes through work contracted with outside companies. One of those workers is 33-year-old Jaime Muniz, who has been there for 11 years and whose paycheck recently averaged about $1.28 per hour. “My payment is not going well,” Muniz told The Post's disabilities reporter Amanda Morris. “And it's making our lives harder, a lot harder.”Yet paying workers with disabilities far below minimum wage is completely legal. Muniz is one of tens of thousands of workers with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are paid subminimum wages at facilities across the country. The labor program, sanctioned by federal law, is supposed to prepare workers for higher-paying jobs in the community, and while many families support them, Morris and her colleagues Caitlin Gilbert and Jacqueline Alemany found in a months-long investigation that they often lack oversight and accountability. Today, host Martine Powers speaks with Morris about what she heard from workers and their families, the future of this arcane law, and the growing scrutiny surrounding these programs.Today's show was produced by Elana Gordon with help from Sabby Robinson and Ariel Plotnick. It was edited by Reena Flores and mixed by Sam Bair. Thanks to Emily Codik, Caitlin Gilbert, Jacqueline Alemany, Lauren Gurley and Andrea Sachs. Subscribe to The Washington Post here.

War With Mexico Welcome to the Hidden History of Texas. This is Episode 44 – War With Mexico -  As always, brought to you by Ashby Navis and Tennyson Media Publishers, producers of  high quality games, productivity, mental health apps, and  a comprehensive catalog of  audiobooks. Visit AshbyNavis.com for more information. The 1846-1848 conflict known in the United States as the Mexican-American War was called the U.S. Invasion by Mexico. It was fueled by the expansionist views of President James Polk and was an example of his belief in the ‘Manifest Destiny'. He firmly believed that the United States was destined by God to own all the land from the Atlantic to the Pacific. After he became President and oversaw the annexation of Texas into the union as a State, he realized that since Mexico controlled everything west of Texas, it  was standing in his way. Initially he  tried to have Mexico agree to several small issues. After the Battle of San Jacinto, even though Texas and the United States claimed Texas was independent the fact was that Mexico had never officially signed a peace treaty. Polk wanted Mexico to recognize that the boundary between the United States and Mexico was the Rio Grande. He also wanted Mexico to sell Northern California to the United States. He did his best to pressure Mexico into accepting these terms, but he failed because nobody in Mexico would agree to giving up any territory to the United States and that especially included Texas. Polk was not a person to take no for an answer, and he grew increasingly frustrated by Mexico. On January 13, 1846, he ordered the army that was under the control of Gen. Zachary Taylor's, which was in Corpus Christi, to move to the Rio Grande. Needless to say, the Mexican government took this to be an act of war. The Mexicans responded by crossing the Rio Grande on April 25 at Matamoros and  ambushed an American patrol. Much like President Johnson would do later with the Gulf of Tonkin incident to justify further involvement in Vietnam, on May 13th, Polk used this to convince Congress to declare war on Mexico. He claimed that this was because "American blood had been shed upon American soil."  On May 8 and 9, even before the official declaration of war Taylor's army defeated a force of 3,700 Mexican soldiers under Gen. Mariano Arista in the Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma Initially the American forces tried to use the time-honored plan of blockading Mexican coastal cities and also occupying the Mexican states that bordered Texas. These plans were based on a very unrealistic belief that this would somehow coerce Mexico into giving up territory. In September General Taylor, accompanied by a significant number of volunteers that included many Texans, seized Monterrey. He then declared that General Arista had agreed to an armistice. Taylor succeeded in large part due to the role that  Col. John Coffee Hays's Texas Mounted Rifles played during the attack on the city.  Polk, however, was not satisfied with the armistice and he denounced it, forcing Taylor to drive further south to Saltillo and then east to Victoria. Meanwhile Gen. John E. Wool lead more troops from San Antonio with the initial intention of threatening Chihuahua, instead he turned and ended up joining Taylor's forces. Not content with just Texas and Mexico, President Polk sent Gen. Stephen W. Kearny from Fort Leavenworth with instructions to seize New Mexico. Finally in July, as Taylor's forces were gathering, the navy sent its Pacificsquadron under Commodore John D. Sloat to occupy Monterey and San  Francisco, California. From that post they joined a force of Anglo settlers who  at the urging of the explorer John C. Frémont had established their own government. Although an August incursion into southern California failed, the area was eventually secured by a joint army-navy expedition under Kearny and Commodore Robert F. Stockton in January 1847. The town was ethnically diverse, as was Kearny High School. He did reasonably well academically and played basketball and baseball all four years. One day a nurse came up to him and told him about a mentoring program offered by the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey. After a training session, he became Sandy's mentor along with five others. After 20 years he is still helping Sandy, who is now 59. What does a mentor do? Mentors try to get the survivor as many benefits possible — housing, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. Walter introduces activities like handicapped horseback riding, joining a support group, finding work opportunities, etc. He always helps them set goals that include gaining as much independence as possible. He takes each of the survivors he mentors out to lunch at least once a week. When he became a mentor, he decided to learn as much as he could about brain injury. He joined a support group, read books, and subscribed to magazines. He has leaned much in the last 20 years but continue to learn. One of the words that's become utterly void of meaning in the last few years because of its overuse and misuse is privilege. White privilege, male privilege, able-bodied privilege, gender privilege, heterosexual privilege, even hot privilege. In these contexts, privilege is a stain, a kind of original sin meant to guilt the offending party into repenting for it at every twist and turn in their life. “Check your privilege” became a common refrain of the past decade. What all of this has done is confuse and undermine the idea of real privilege—real advantage that some situations produce over others—which, of course, really exists in this country.  But the ultimate privilege in America is not being born white or straight or male. The ultimate privilege, as Melissa Kearny argues, is being born into a household with two parents. Melissa Kearney is an economist at the University of Maryland and her new book, The Two-Parent Privilege: How Americans Stopped Getting Married and Started Falling Behind, argues that declining marriage rates in America—and the corresponding rise in children being raised in single parent households—are driving many of the country's biggest economic problems. In the 1950s, fewer than 5 percent of babies in this country were born to unmarried mothers. Today, nearly half of all babies in America are born to unmarried mothers. Most surprising—and worrisome—is how this trend is divided along class lines, with children whose mothers don't have a college degree being more than twice as likely—as compared to children of college-educated mothers—to live in a single parent home. Kearny asserts this is widening the economic gap in opportunities and outcomes and rendering already vulnerable populations even more vulnerable.  Many of the arguments that Kearney makes in her book are what you might call commonsensical. And yet the book has received criticism, including from those in our culture who don't dare make judgments on issues of home and family life, perhaps because that's long been considered to be the domain of social conservatives. But as celebrated economist and our friend Tyler Cowen said of Melissa's book, “this could be the most important economics and policy book of the year… it's remarkable that such a book is so needed, but it is.” The word privilege, as Melissa Kearney uses it, is not a dirty word. It is not a judgment that some people are intrinsically better or worse than others. It's not a word meant to guilt or shame a group of people. Quite the opposite. It's an aspirational word. It's meant to inspire policies, programs, and changes in our social norms to even the playing field so that we can do better for all of our children. So that every child in America has the best possible chance for flourishing. That is what every child in this country deserves. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This episode was recorded prior to the tragic passing of Dennis Mallen. We were honored to have been able to speak to him just a few months before he passed. May he rest in peace. EPISODE 4  - AIRS APRIL 26, 2023 DENNIS MALLEN, ACTOR and PRODUCER Dennis W. Mallen, Jr. oldest of three children, Dennis was born in Newark, NJ and raised in middle-class, Kearny, NJ. As a straight C student and athlete, Dennis always had a "happy go lucky" charm and brought a certain intensity to everything that he's done. He was fortunate enough to have corporate success at a young age. He was a 25 year old technology executive in Manhattan. During the dot.com era, Dennis was the CEO of a technology firm. It is at this time that Dennis began his acting career. His first role was an off-Broadway rendition of "Of Mice and Men." Dennis discovered that he was a "true method actor" by exploring and demonstrating the depths of his role as "Lenny." It is after that that Dennis had his first audition, that he booked. He was the principal actor in a "China Airlines" commercial. He has gone on to have many roles both principal and supporting. Most recently and notable, he is the lead actor in the features "Killer Miller," "Grey People," "Daddy We're Back, " and "The Italians." He's also had notable supporting roles in "The Mad Hatter," "Life's Rewards" "Ponder," "The Irishman," and "Devil's Advocate." Dennis is also committed to numerous projects and commercials throughout North America. Dennis' professionalism, marketability and preparedness has made him the ideal actor for any role that comes his way. He has displayed an extensive "range" in his character development. He is known for exploring roles of characters that are "broken;" because afterall, there's no fun in a vanilla character. This story, as Caroline Cabading so elegantly frames it, is about the longevity of struggle. Part 2 picks up with Caroline sharing the story of her grandfather moving her family out of Manilatown and into the Fillmore, where she grew up two generations later. To her, the neighborhood was family. This was post-"urban renewal," but she still found plenty of folks with makeshift music studios in places like garages. She credits the neighborhood with her own lifetime in music. Then we do a deep dive into the history of the International Hotel. It was an SRO (single-room occupancy) hotel on Kearny at Jackson that was part of a de facto network of such spots running from wine country to the Central Valley. Seasonal, migrant workers (mostly immigrants) stayed in these SROs throughout the year. And at the I-Hotel, many FIlipinos eventually settled and made it their permanent home. But as so often happens, especially around here, greedy developers wanted to raze the building to make way for ... a parking lot. After years of organizing and fighting the effort to displace them, scores of people were evicted in the middle of the night on August 4, 1977. The group that tenants had formed to fight eviction stayed tight, gathering every August at Kearny and Jackson to commemorate. Nearly 20 years later, as an opportunity to rebuild on the site became more and more realistic, the group morphed into the Manilatown Heritage Foundation. In 2005, the new building opened. Today, on the ground floor, there's a living museum dedicated to Manilatown and I-Hotel history. Above that is housing for low-income seniors. And this is where that longevity Caroline emphasizes comes into play. We end the podcast with Caroline's telling us what all goes on in the space at 868 Kearny. In addition to the museum, she says that it's a space to learn Filipino art, music, and culture. The foundation invites the public to visit and share in the rich history that is Manilatown, San Francisco. Photography by Michelle Kilfeather Sound design by Kayla Anchell

Nearly 100 years ago, the stretch of Kearny Street from Jackson south all the way down to Market was filled with Filipino shops, restaurants, and SRO hotels. Perhaps most notably, the International Hotel (I-Hotel) was located at the intersection of Kearny and Jackson. Today, that space is occupied by a residence for older folks, some of whom have connections to the last of the mostly immigrant population who were evicted in the middle of the night from their homes at the I-Hotel in 1977. It's also home to the Manilatown Heritage Foundation. In Part 1 of our podcast, our guest, foundation Executive Director Caroline Julia Cabading, guides us through her own fourth-generation Filipina history in San Francisco. Caroline lays out the history of U.S. imperialism and capitalism that sought cheap Asian labor and therefore brought Filipinos, mostly men, to this country for migrant work in Northern California. As they aged, those young men later settled in the I-Hotel, forming a community and chosen families until they were unjustly thrust from their homes by a real estate developer (sound familiar?). Check back next week for Part 2 and more of our chat with Caroline Cabading. We recorded this episode at the Manilatown Heritage Foundation in February 2023.
