Interview by Angela CroudaceNick Thomas, frontman of The Spill Canvas, is bringing something special to Australian fans this year — a long-awaited celebration of their beloved 2005 album One Fell Swoop. Speaking ahead of their debut tour Down Under, Thomas shared his excitement and gratitude for being able to continue making music nearly two decades on.“To get to do this for even a year, let alone over 20, is a marvel in and of itself,” he said. “We've never been to Australia, so to come over now and play this album in full feels really special.”The tour, a co-headlining run with fellow emo pioneers The Juliana Theory, marks a major milestone for both bands. Thomas credits Emotion Is Dead as a formative influence in his own musical journey, and says he's thrilled to share the stage with artists he once idolised. “I grew up listening to them — now we're friends. It's wild.”The Spill Canvas will perform One Fell Swoop front to back, staying true to its original sequencing. “We spent a lot of time curating the track list as a journey,” Thomas explained. “It just feels right to honour it that way.” After the final track, Self-Conclusion, Thomas plans to segue into a few more fan favourites to round out the night.Despite never visiting Australia before, Thomas is embracing the adventure with enthusiasm. “I'd love to see the Opera House, meet people, maybe spot a kangaroo. I'm also — embarrassingly — a big fan of Below Deck Down Under. Captain Jason is my hero!”Reflecting on the recording of One Fell Swoop, Thomas recalled humble beginnings at Black Lodge Studios in Kansas with producer Ed Rose. “It was our first real studio experience. I remember Ryan Pope from The Get Up Kids giving me a shoulder rub while I was recording guitar. I tried to play it cool, but I was freaking out.”Over the years, The Spill Canvas has toured with major acts like the Goo Goo Dolls and OneRepublic. Thomas fondly recalled an evening where Ryan Tedder listened to his demos and gave thoughtful feedback. “Moments like that are unforgettable. It's what makes this lifestyle feel like a shared journey.”After all these years, Thomas remains a passionate music fan, recently inspired by artists like Medium Build and Bilmuri (not the actor). “Always be a fan,” he said. “That's what keeps it exciting.”Check out the full interview for more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

This episode features Benny, a musician and producer who performs under the name Muted Circus. Benny, originally from Orange County, California, is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. He spent seven years in Tokyo, Japan, and attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. The discussion starts with Benny sharing the story of his first rock concert at the age of 13, where he saw The Get Up Kids in a small, intimate venue in his hometown. This concert sparked his lifelong passion for live music, leading him to attend concerts frequently, including during his college years and time in Japan. Benny reminisces about the DIY music scene of Orange County in the '90s and shares anecdotes about attending shows with his older brother and friends. He also recalls a memorable yet disappointing encounter with Dave Mustaine from Megadeth during a concert in Tokyo, juxtaposing it with a positive experience meeting Marty Friedman, a former Megadeth guitarist. The conversation then shifts towards Benny's musical project, Muted Circus, a deeply personal undertaking inspired by the death of his father. The project comprises 10 EPs with 50 songs, each featuring his father's visual artwork on the covers. Benny explains how creating this music helped him process his grief and reflect on his relationship with his father. He delves into the themes explored in his music, often revolving around the impact of his parents on his life. Benny shares the challenges and emotional journey of writing and recording these songs over several years. He also introspects on the nuances of live vs. recorded music and the emotional resonance that well-produced music can often deliver.During the interview, Benny performs 'Disconnection,' a song from his final EP in the Muted Circus series. The song captures the sentiment of final phone calls with a loved one and reflects Benny's extensive relationship with his father through daily check-ins on the phone. The episode concludes with Benny discussing his future plans for more music releases under different projects and emphasizing the therapeutic power of music in processing complex emotions. Listeners can explore Benny's work on platforms like Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.BANDS: No Doubt, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Real Big Fish, Gwen and Eric Stefani, Megadeth, NSYNC, Metallica, Slayer, Marty Friedman, Dave Mustaine.VENUES: Makuhari Messe (Japan), Koos Cafe, The Chain Reaction, Madison Square Garden. With their complex bass, guitar harmonies and sincere vocals, they were a force to be reckoned with. Often referred to as a “band's band”, Six Going on Seven came up alongside many of the household names we still discuss from the era: Jimmy Eat World, Hot Water Music, The Get Up Kids, sharing the stage with them and many others. Today's guests are more than just bandmates. Friends since the first grade -- with matching tattoos to boot -- being founding members of the influential Kansas collective The Get Up Kids has taken Rob Pope and Jim Suptic (along with Matt Pryor and Rob's brother Ryan) to seemingly every corner of the world since their 1995 formation. This year marks the 25th anniversary of their breakthrough sophomore LP Something to Write Home About — an album layered in lovelorn distance and declarations of proving oneself. Back then, Jim and Rob say that getting the album out was a frustrating practice in learning who to trust; at the moment, currently on tour playing the album in full, the pair look at the release as a "coming-of-age" album, one that inspired and launched thousands of bands itself through its heroic melodies and relatable points of view. Recorded backstage at the legendary Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, Jim and Rob discuss the two-sided coin of nostalgia, what inspires them about each other, and why maple syrup isn't always a positive smell. The band's 2LP Something to Write Home About reissue, complete with demos and previously unheard material, is available now via digital platforms, and physically on September 20th. Tour dates and more can be found at thegetupkids.com.

The Get Up Kids‘ classic 1999 album Something To Write Home About turns 25 this year, and the band is celebrating with an expanded reissue and a tour, and for the occasion, co-leaders Matt Pryor and Jim Suptic joined us on the BrooklynVegan podcast for an hour-long reflection on the album. They reminisced about how they evolved from their very humble beginnings and their 1997 debut album Four Minute Mile into the band that wrote one of the most influential emo albums of all time just two years later, the label feeding frenzy that followed Four Minute Mile‘s success and the decision to go with then-little-known label Vagrant, the longer demoing process that helped make Something To Write Home About a much more refined album than its predecessor (and that's being immortalized with the second disc of demos included with this new reissue), their headlining STWHA tour with openers At the Drive-In, their 2001 support tours for Green Day and Weezer, the mainstream emo boom that Something To Write Home About heavily inspired and that The Get Up Kids moved away from with 2002's On A Wire, and more.   Pick up our exclusive "violet & silver mix" vinyl variant of the Something To Write Home About 25th anniversary edition in the online BrooklynVegan shop: https://shop.brooklynvegan.com/products/the-get-up-kids-something-to-write-home-about-25th-anniversary-2lp-limited-edition-only-500-made-violet-silver-mix-vinyl   - The BrooklynVegan Show is brought to you in part by DistroKid, a service for musicians that allows you to easily upload your music to all major streaming platforms. With a name borrowed from the Get Up Kids' second EP, Red Letter Days finds front man Matt Pryor delving deep into personal stories. The memoir was adapted – in part – from the musician's journals, beginning with his childhood diabetes diagnoses, through his musical journey. Formed in Kansas in the mid-90s, the Get Up Kids went on to become one of the most influential acts of emo's second wave (referred to as the tongue-in-cheek “e-word” throughout). Pryor joins us to discuss his musical life, personal struggles and the act of getting it all down on paper. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

He also shares his early childhood growing up in Lawrence and his struggle with childhood diabetes. In this episode, Matt shares how writer Frank Turner encouraged him to write his memoir, why the book helped him hit a welcomed rock bottom and why finishing the book put into a depression. He explains how a simple writing exercise evolved into Red Letter Days, why the editing process was foreign to him and how songwriting and story writing are similar in his process. With the launch of Matt's first memoir, "Red Letter Days," I listened to the first time Matt and I spoke for the podcast. It was great that I thought it was worth having those who may have missed. Plus, this was a big launching point for the show as I was starting to get bigger and bigger guests. Crazy to think that was 10 years ago this month. Please pre-order Matt's book "Red Letter Days" at WashedUpBooks.com Newsletter sign up Notes from episode 20 I wrote in 2013... "It was an absolute honor to have Mr. Matt Pryor from The Get Up Kids be a part of the podcast. I just noticed after listening back to this episode that the only person left to interview from my opening musical montage is Jeremy Enigk. What a trip it's been. Matt was great to chat with and even had to scold his kids who you can hear at times during the interview. We dove into the first time Matt sang live in front of someone, Kansas City, Boy's Life, ripping off "Static Prevails" and why bands do 10 year anniversaries. Matt also mentioned his opinion on the word "emo" and throughout the podcast you can hear his voice ring with truth that also transcends to the bands he was in and his way of life. And you have to hear what song The Get Up Kids never have to practice that you love. Finally, download his recently launched podcast "Nothing To Write Home About" which is a great listen and unique insight into the scene." I am psyched and honored to have the amazingly talented, ever so sweet (( see what I did there) and by far one of the coolest people I have ever talked with, Amy Fleisher-Madden on the show this week!Amy founded the independent record label, Fiddler Records, in Miami, Florida when she was 16 years old. In her mind, it was a logical progression from her local fanzine. Before she could even vote she discovered and broke bands like Dashboard Confessional, New Found Glory, and several other indie darlings you may or may not have heard of. She oversaw the creative direction and released over 25 records—which is what fueled her desire to properly learn Art Direction at the world-famous Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Upon completing her degree, Madden promptly moved to New York City to work as a Copywriter for an advertising agency. Having real-world experience with her own business helped her climb the ranks quickly, and she fast became a Creative Director working for what you could call ginormous brands. And after nearly a decade of that hustle and bustle, Madden decided to try her hand as a freelance creative whilst writing a book. This worked out well, and her first novel A Million Miles was released in 2014 to rave reviews and has become a fan favorite in the music scene. In 2022 Amy inked a deal with Chronicle Books to release NEGATIVES, a first-of-its-kind photographic archive of the emo music scene from 1996 to 2006, which will be released October, 24th!I loved this conversation so much and I hope you do as well! You can follow Amy at:https://www.amy-madden.comandhttps://www.instagram.com/AMYXMADDEN/There you can find links to her book signing events and ways to order 'Negatives' and 'A Million Miles' as well. You can follow me at:www.instagram.com/christiegeeYou can listen to the Spotify playlist I made inspired by 'Negatives' over at:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3Zi7mPNVib8WQrg122ftOQ?si=8cc3c7a6249848c8Thank you all so much for listening!

Today, on the podcast, there is a massive announcement. This morning, I launched a book publishing company called Washed Up Books. After two volumes of Anthology of Emo, I really felt there was more to do in this space and because of your support, it's time to make this a real thing.  Today, I'm proud to announce Red Letter Days, the debut novel from Matt Pryor from the Get Up Kids, New Amsterdams, and Terrible Twos. Today, it's available for preorder via WashedUpBooks.com or via our friends at PolyvinylRecords.com. And yes, it is available worldwide. Wherever you are in the world, you can get this! I thought it would be fun to recap the releases of Anthology of Emo and how we got to doing Red Letter Days with the designer Jesse Reed. Jesse's day job is Order, a design firm, Standards Manual book series, and in a fantastic band called Sharkswimmer, where he's the drummer. It'll make sense as you hear the episode. Jesse was invaluable to making these a reality, and we go into the story of how we started doing books and dive into books and music.  This is overwhelming to have happened. It's amazing to think someone like Matt Pryor, whom I idolized, has put pen to paper and written a fantastic series of stories that I have been waiting to tell you for so long.  Truly, thank you for the support on this podcast and the books. Shout out to everyone who helped make the Anthologies happen, Polyvinyl Records, Ian King, and many others… This is just the start of Washed Up Books.  Learn more about your ad choices. The sound of what we've come to know as "emo" from the insane popularity of bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and Panic! At The Disco in the 2000s differs pretty wildly from the sound of the bands that spawned the genre. 90s emo is a particular brand of emo - much more moody, more lo-fi, more rooted in punk, hardcore, new wave, and bands like Fugazi. In large part thanks to Nirvana, little scenes began popping up all over small town America throughout the 90s, and seemingly random outcroppings like Boise, ID Mesa, AZ, Kansas City, MO and Milwaukee, WI became hotbeds of guitar driven heart-on-sleeve bands made up of kids getting in touch with their emotions while bashing out some cathartic rock n roll. You didn't have to be there, but it helps and this week's guest was right in the thick of it back in the day as was your humble host. We start there, moving chronologically up through 1994, with a special emphasis on Midwest emo and proto-emo bands. This week, we hit Rites of Spring, Superchunk, Jawbox, Jawbreaker, The Get Up Kids, Sunny Day Real Estate, and more. Next week, Josh will join me again to talk through '95-97. Over the last quarter century, Josh Berwanger‘s work has taken many different forms. After his time in accomplished early aughts emo outfit The Anniversary was through, the Kansas-based songwriter dabbled in alt-country with The Only Children, ventured in the direction of indie rock with his Berwanger project and joined forces with members of The Get Up Kids and The Gadjits to form Radar State. Along the way, he even stepped completely away from music for seven years to coach girls high school basketball. Most recently, Berwanger has embarked on a “genre-blending” aural endeavor called Gemini Parks. With monthly song releases, some shows in the books and a Gemini Parks release planned for next year, Berwanger has a lot of modern-day happenings to talk about. He did just that when he spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas. Of course, their conversation also touched on early bands, the beginning of The Anniversary, memorable moments from that band, his years away from music, what brought him back to the stage and what's to come. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth (“The Junction Street Eight Tigers”) and Gemini Parks (“Up All Night”).
