For the 15th anniversary of Manchester Orchestra's second album, Mean Everything to Nothing, we take a detailed look at how it was made. The band started in 2004 as an outlet for Andy Hull's songwriting that he was doing as a teenager growing up in Atlanta, Georgia. Hull connected with bassist Jonathan Corley and drummer Jeremiah Edmond and self-released their first EP in 2005. Keyboardist Chris Freeman joined the band and their debut album, I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child was released in 2006 on their own label. They got the attention of Canvasback Recordings, who signed them to a deal and re-released the album one year later. Guitarist Robert McDowell ended up joining the band and they began working on their second album, with Joe Chiccarelli producing. Mean Everything to Nothing was eventually released in 2009. In this episode, Andy Hull reflects on the pressure he felt suddenly being on a major label and working with a big name producer. Expectations for the band were high and he describes his ambition to rise above the sophomore slump and deliver a great record. Inspired by Weezer's Pinkerton, he talks about wanting to make an emotionally raw sounding record that reflected his turbulent personal life at this time as he was getting married and wrestling with his faith and his Christian upbringing. The resulting album made for a cathartic experience that provided a deep and long lasting connection with their audience. From shredded vocal chords to writing autobiographically and not overthinking lyrics to panic attacks on tour to reinterpreting the hymn “Come Thou Fount” to a meltdown after losing a hundred dollar bill, we'll hear the stories around how the record came together.

She also gives out "You Matter" bracelets to spread awareness, which can be ordered through her foundation's website. Hosted by comedians Freddie Rivas and Andy Hull, Confederacy of Dunks delivers basketball talk with a laid-back, hilarious twist. In this episode, they welcome comedian and producer Dan Galea. They hit on some fun stuff. First they delve into the big emotions of the Vince Carter jersey retirement and talk a lot about how Vince had a very special, and vulnerable energy. After that it's all about how fun this young team is. Even though they might never become a .500 team, there's a bunch of hope with this squad. The last topic is truly insane. Andy talks about a wild basketball card that has sky rocketed in value. Segment 1: Vince Carter's Jersey Retirement First up, the gang dives into the emotional rollercoaster of Vince Carter's jersey retirement, reflecting on how this was more than just a Raptors milestone—it was a moment that had fans reliving Vinsanity and all its highs and lows. Freddie and Andy talk about how it felt like the entire fanbase went back to those highlight-reel days. Dan talks about forgetting just who Vince was and how enjoyable it was to see masculinity and power tears. as well as the obvious take which is that this was an incredible Vince send off. Segment 2: The Current Raptors Squad Next, they break down the season so far and the buzz around Gradey Dick and RJ Barrett, who are making things exciting on the court for a team that doesn't have a lot of business being this exciting. Dan throws out a wild stat: Gradey's scored more points than any other sophomore in the NBA—a stat that catches everyone off guard. Freddie and Andy bring up how the young core has fans hopeful, with an energy that feels fun and fresh, reminding them of the Raptors' winning mentality under Masai Ujiri. Segment 3: MJ's Card and the Menendez Brothers Then comes a deep dive into one of the weirdest stories of the week: a rare Michael Jordan card shot up in value because fans noticed the Menendez brothers sitting courtside in the background! This is just straight up weird. Andy, Dan and Freddie get riffy on how this could be even weirder. And, in classic Dunks fashion, they wrap up with some hot takes on Stephen A. Smith. While Andy confesses a soft spot for him, Dan and Freddie consider Smith the ultimate "high art clown," and agree that being a good clown is no small feat. Learn more about your ad choices. On this week of Confederacy of Dunks, Freddie Rivas and Andy Hull welcome guest Anthony Hall from Toronto's Second City. They of course riff on the insane new theme song that Andy has created, and move on to talk a little bit about the Toronto raptors pre-season. The guys talk about IQ, Jamaal Shead, Chris Boucher and Peyton Prichard somehow always going off against the raptors. They touch on the low stakes of the pre season and how this team is in hard to evaluate without having IQ and Scottie on the floor together. After the pre season talk they get curious about the hall of fame. Vince Carter's hall of fame addition as a raptor sparked Freddie's curiosity so the guys riff on hall of fakes in general. What makes them matter? Where are they? Who gets in? Should we care? Do we care? They decide to make a Canadian heritage minute where Andy heckles James Naismith (played by Freddie) until James Naismith gives up his idea. Anthony suggest that he could be one of the guys who is wearing tight clothing. Pretty good idea honestly. Question three is all about the new documentary series the starting five which features LeBron, Jimmy, Anthony davis, Anthony Edwards and Domantis Sabonis. They each choose their own starting five and explore different angles like journeyman, veteran players, instigators and player coaches. Between the in three of them we get a big variety of takes and some straight up golden ideas if we are being real about it. Topic number four is all about the Donte Divenenzo and Rick Brunson beef. During the Minnesota Timberwolves vs New York Knicks game, don't was talking some smack to Tom Thibideau and it went viral. The guys explore other potential beefs this year like Bronny Vs Dillon, Paul George Vs Kawhi Leonard and Taylor Swift Vs Tom Thibideau. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

LeAnn Hull is an author, a motivational speaker, a presenter, an encourager, the Co-Affiliate Leader of the remarkable non-profit Helping Parents Heal group named Healing After Suicide, and an inspiring role model for grief to healing to rebirth. Her book, titled How to Live When You Want to Die, tells the heartbreaking experience of losing her 16-year-old son to suicide in 2012. Andy was a great student, a star pitcher scouted by major league baseball teams, on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout, and he was dearly loved by his friends. His suicide sent a piercing thunderbolt through the hearts of many thousands of people, and it also became the driving force behind LeAnn's purpose-driven conviction to spread love, inspiration, and encouragement in the midst of her grief. After Andy transitioned, LeAnn founded a non-profit organization called Andy Hull's Sunshine Foundation, whose mission is to raise awareness of the high rate of suicide while providing teens with coping skills to deal with life's challenges. With a "You Matter!" approach, the foundation both honors Andy's legacy and saves lives by offering much-needed education, support, and encouragement.IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL HEAR ABOUT THINGS LIKE: · The heartbreaking way Andy took his life and the vow LeAnn made in her bathroom that night. · The wonderful day when baseball scouts came from all over the country to watch Andy pitch. · The warning signs everyone missed that could have saved Andy. · How LeAnn has been able to be a victor not a victim during her history of continuing, devastating losses.SOME QUESTIONS IRENE ASKS LeAnn: · What is the difference between grieving and being sad? · How is your book, How to Live When You Want to Die, a roadmap for those suffering from the passing of a loved one? · What do you say to teens who are thinking about suicide, who are at risk for suicide, and how do you advise kids to cope when things go wrong?

Over the past decade and through four albums, Foxing has shown a lot of musical personalities. They've embraced the quirky, eclectic folk of Neutral Milk Hotel. Guitarist Eric Hudson has shown off some deft fretwork wrapped around complex rhythms similar to https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-tiny-moving-parts (Tiny Moving Parts)' Dylan Mattheisen. They've dabbled in complicated, ambiguous instrumentation that echoes Radiohead. Most recently, the band has flexed a cinematic, post-rock cohesion that connects plot points via varied emotions and energy rather than analogous storytelling. And during the Rundown, Hudson hints at heavier, darker moments to come as they've been writing in tunings reserved for https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/behemoths-adam-nergal-darski-shades-of-black (Behemoth) and https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-melvins-buzz-osborne-2015 (Melvins). All of these experimentations and transformations have allowed Foxing to carry on without needing a roadmap to their rock. And we're just along for the ride. The St. Louis indie rockers formed in the early 2010s out of the demise of Hunter Gatherer. Originally, the band was a trio with singer/guitarist Conor Murphy, bassist Josh Coll, and drummer Jon Hellwig. Prior to recording their 2013 debut, The Albatross, they expanded to a quintet with the addition of guitarists Eric Hudson and Ricky Sampson. However, Coll left ahead of Foxing's third album, Nearer My God, and prior to recording their 2021 release, Draw Down the Moon (co-produced by https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-manchester-orchestra (Rig Rundown alumnus Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra)). And then Sampson departed the band. Murphy, Hellwig, and Hudson are the core members and tour with a rotating cast of contributors. Ahead of Foxing's July 5 headlining show at Nashville's Basement East, Chris Kies hopped onstage and talked gear with Hudson, who touched on his love of “clanky” Strats, illustrated how his dual pedalboards can project him from pastoral to delirium, and explained why it always pays off to have good friends and to hang out at the merch booth. In this episode, Ted Stryker welcomes Paris Jackson to the Tuna on Toast Studio. Paris just released a new song called "Lighthouse". Paris recorded the song in December of 2021 with Butch Walker producing and Mike McCready from Pearl Jam on guitar. Paris and Butch had been talking about working with eachother for years, it finally came to fruition on "lighthouse" as well has future songs yet to be released. Paris released a solo album in 2020 titled Wilted which was produced by Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra. Paris talks about how great that experience was and what a good human Andy is. When discussing her music, she says at the end of the day, all her songs are folk. Paris tells Stryker she started playing guitar at 13 but doesn't consider herself to be a guitar player. Paris Jackson talks about how singing "Surrender" with the band Cheap Trick and playing a set with her own band at Boston Calling was one of the best days of her life. Paris also tells Stryker about playing with The Struts and botching their lyrics but still having a blast. Stryker and Paris chat about being so under the microscope and not having a chance to stumble without it being super magnified. Stryker asks Paris about music execs that try to get her to perform more under the pop umbrella than a rock or folk style. Paris tells Stryker about the music she grew up listening to from Motley Crue to Simon and Garfunkle and Snoop and Dre. Stryker asks Paris what is success to her when it comes to her music career. Paris tells Stryker how the band Radiohead and their music helped her through some very dark times. Paris mentions that she'd love to work with Conor Oberst, Cage the Elephant, Dave Grohl and Margot & the Nuclear So and So's. Paris tells Stryker she doesn't watch too much TV and really loves gore and to be scared! Paris said the only person that can really scare her is her brother Prince Jackson. She also talks about how lucky she is to have such great brothers. Paris tells Stryker how she's had a few songs written about her that were not good songs. It was such a wonderful afternoon chatting with Paris Jackson, she is smart, talented and very nice! Thanks for watching another episode of Tuna on Toast with Stryker.

In this very special and deeply personal episode, Peter interview great indie band Manchester Orchestra's singer, chief songwriter and guitarist Andy Hull and lead guitarist (and brother-in-law) Robert McDowell about the band's latest great album "The Million Masks of God." The album's themes encapsulate the entire cycle of life - from birth to the after-life. Peter reveals that his mother, Eva, just recently passed away from her 5 year battle with cancer – and Manchester Orchestra's McDowell, lost his father to cancer as they recorded the album. Hull, McDowell and Peter not only have a track by track discussion of the album (and what the lyrics mean to the writers of it). The core of their discussion is about the infinite meanings and impact those same lyrics can have on an artist's audience. It is an interview about love, loss, and the deep power of music to console and to heal. Peter wrote a companion about this interview for VARIETY – an article titled “Love, Loss & Music: How Manchester Orchestra's Songs of Solace Helped a Grieving Son Heal." You can find that at https://variety.com/2021/music/opinion/manchester-orchestra-songs-death-solace-1235048577/ .
