Madeline, Julian, and Emilio continue their cycle of New York City movies with a "Suggestion Box" entry covering "Problemista," the film debut of director, writer, and actor Julio Torres, known previously for his writing on Saturday Night Live, HBO special "My Favorite Shapes," and co-creating and starring in the supernatural comedy "Los Espookys." Like other films the group have discussed in this cycle, "Problemista" depicts a recent immigrant's struggle to get by in New York City, but through a distinctly contemporary lens that stands out for its surrealism and vivacious humor. In discussing Alejandro "Ale" Martinez's journey towards steady employment and a work visa, the group look in depth at the magical realism throughout (with emphasis on "Craigslist" and "Bureaucratic Limbo"), how people with power use or abuse their privilege, and the enigma that is Elizabeth, Alejandro's erratic presumed employer played by a tour-de-force Tilda Swinton. And perhaps they'll match some databases in FileMakerPro in the process...If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. Send us a textLenny Zenith is more than an artist—he's a trailblazer in the transgender community, whose life and music have broken boundaries and shattered stereotypes. His career, spanning decades, includes leading iconic bands like Jenifer Convertible, Tenterhooks, Minor Planets, Pop Comb, and RZA as well as his collaborations with industry legends like James Murphy and Wharton Tiers. Lenny's genre-bending sound draws from his Cuban heritage, merging rock with jazz, electronica, and orchestral ballads, resulting in a body of work that's as diverse as it is powerful.Lenny's journey as a transgender man began in his youth in New Orleans, where he struggled to find acceptance while facing the challenges of adolescence. As a young transgender person, he found sanctuary at NOCCA (New Orleans Center for Creative Arts) and life-saving support from two compassionate doctors at Tulane Medical Center, who guided him through a difficult time.Yet, even with this support, Lenny's path was filled with hurdles. Outed in high school by a classmate, Lenny was forced to leave McMain Magnet School (New Orleans), completing his education in isolation. Despite these challenges, his strength and determination led him to continue his musical career, though his transgender identity remained hidden from the public eye for many years. Fear for his safety kept him silent, but Lenny's artistic expression always reflected his inner truth. Now, Lenny is no longer silent. In 2018, he fully embraced his identity with the release of What If The Sun, followed by the 2022 trans anthem “Where Is Safe,” a powerful response to the growing threats against transgender people, particularly youth, in the United States. With He/Hymn, Lenny steps forward once again—boldly sharing his story through music that speaks to the universal need for acceptance, love, and healing. With He/Hymn, Lenny Zenith's artistic vision reaches new heights, showcasing both his growth as an artist and the assured power of his voice. It is a remarkable testament to his journey and his extraordinary talent. His music doesn't just resonate with the transgender community—it speaks to anyone who has ever felt different, isolated, or in search of their true self. He/Hymn is a testament to his strength as both an artist and a transgender advocate, offering hope and a reminder that music, like identity, is a force of transformation and empowerment***If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomAudio production by Rich Zei of Third Ear AudioIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. If you're a regular Talkhouse Podcast listener you know that we most often feature musicians on the show, but we're always happy when creative people in other fields share a chat, too—especially when they've had the kind of interesting careers that today's two guests have. Haley Joel Osment made a permanent mark on pop culture when he uttered the words “I see dead people” in 1999's The Sixth Sense, made when he was just 10 years old. The line still reverberates today: Just listen to Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us." Osment was nominated for an Oscar for his role as a psychic kid, and he has had a fruitful, relatively low-key acting career since—no scandals, no blockbusters, just a bunch of really interesting work. As you'll hear in this podcast, he's fully down to earth about his unusual journey—even ready to find a tiny bit of positivity in the recent L.A. fires, which completely destroyed both his and his parents' house. He's chatting here with his actor-comedian friend Matt Walsh, who's probably best known for playing Mike McLintock opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfuss on Veep. It was the perfect vehicle for Walsh, who made his name as an improv comedian in Chicago before his troupe, Upright Citizens Brigade, which also features Amy Poehler, took their show to New York. Walsh is one of those guys who brings the funny to every movie and TV part he's in: If you don't recognize his name, you'll certainly recognize his face. The reason these two came together today is that a movie they co-starred in is just coming out: It's called Not An Artist, and it's an ensemble comedy about a group of artists who gather at a mysterious retreat—organized by no less than The RZA—to decide whether they're actually cut out to be artists. It's available on demand now. These two chat not only about that funny film, but also about Osment's experience with the L.A. fires, about Walsh's Chicago background, weird Airbnbs, the magic of David Mamet's dialogue and lots more. It's a good one, enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Haley Joel Osment and Matt Walsh for chatting. RZA is a rapper, producer, composer, actor, director, and the creative mastermind behind the hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan. Since the group's classic 1993 debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), he has produced the most albums for the group and its respective members, pioneering a style rooted in stark booming beats, vintage soul samples, and gritty narratives. Beyond Wu-Tang, RZA launched the horrorcore group Gravediggaz and released music as his alter ego, Bobby Digital. His artistic range extends to scoring films like Dallas Jackson's Thriller, acting in projects like G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and collaborating with artists across genres, including Paul Banks of Interpol in the duo Banks & Steelz. In August 2024, RZA, alongside Colorado Symphony and Christopher Dragon, released his first classical album, A Ballet Through Mud, continuing to redefine boundaries in music and storytelling. ------ Thank you to the sponsors that fuel our podcast and our team: Athletic Nicotine https://www.athleticnicotine.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ Squarespace https://squarespace.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ Vivo Barefoot http://vivobarefoot.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA25' ------ LMNT Electrolytes https://drinklmnt.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ Sign up to receive Tetragrammaton Transmissions https://www.tetragrammaton.com/join-newsletter

Sumit Sharma and Chris Mitchell from Breaking Atoms podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Sumit's choice American Gangster. American Gangster (2007) is biographical crime thriller based on Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas. Directed by Ridley Scott and screenplay by Steven Zaillian based on the The Return of Superfly by Mark Jacobson. It's stacked cast features Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas, Russell Crowe as Richie Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Huey Lucas, Josh Brolin as Detective Trupo, RZA as Moses Jones, Cuba Gooding Jr. as Nicky Barnes, Armand Assante as Dominic Cattano, Idris Elba as Tango and Common as Turner Lucas. In 1960s Harlem Frank Lucas is Bumpy Johnson's right-hand man. When Bumpy dies of a heart attack Frank sees an opportunity to innovate in the drug trade by buying directly from the source in Vietnam and thus cutting out the middle man. Not only that, he trademarks his superior heroin as ‘Blue Magic' and its affordability eliminates the competition. All is going well for Frank until he comes under scrutiny from aspiring lawyer and honest detective Richie Roberts. American Gangster is solid crime drama with a standout performance from Denzel Washington. Like with many Hollywood adaptations what is true and what is there for dramatic effect is unclear but it does make a compelling story of a true life figure. Recommendability scores for American Gangster were high, with a runtime of nearly three hours repeat viewing scores were lower to give an overall rating of 3.88. Clearly, vinyl records play a significant role in Jay and Deon's lives. But how did this all start? Well, episode 40 examines their origin stories. Ten classic artists who helped shape the Lickers' sonic identities are discussed and another crackin' mixtape is curated, created, and (hopefully) cranked. God gave rock and roll to us, Goddamn it. Put it in your soul already.
For many hip-hop heads of a certain vintage, the first Wu-Tang record and the subsequent solo albums represent the pinnacle of musical grittiness, lyrical density, and impressive business acumen. Watching RZA and the supremely talented Clan members take over the world with an uncompromising sound and vision was extremely impressive and brought some undeniable classic records into being. During this period, RZA's basement studio was flooded, and that event impacted a few of the albums' final versions. Tical is one of those records, and this week Dad Bod Rap Pod hosts Demone Carter, David Ma, Nate LeBlanc guest Cutso gather to share their thoughts on Method Man's debut. Method Man was poised to be the breakout star from the Wu, and Tical is perhaps not the album that the market expected from this undeniably charismatic and dynamic rhymer. We discuss the lyrics, the beats, the tone, and the circumstances surrounding this release 30 years ago. As you will hear, our opinions on this record are somewhat divided, which always makes for a more interesting discussion. This episode was produced by Paolo "Cutso" Bello. Theme song by DEM ONE and Cutso. Brought to you by Stony Island Audio.
It's our last new music mix of 2024! This episode is filled with personal anecdotes, such as Samer's marathon triumph soundtracked by the soulful "Like a Prayer," and Matt's unexpected joy in the fusion of Dwight Yoakam's classic twang with Post Malone's genre-bending flair. Explore the thrilling energy of emerging talents and nostalgic sounds as we spotlight artists who deserve more recognition. Ashley Kutcher's witty lyrics and fresh approach to country music have us cheering for her, while Alessia Cara's latest single teases an introspective journey into her upcoming album. Our musical journey also takes us to the comforting holiday sounds of Ben Folds and a refreshing throwback to the '90s with Gang Starr, celebrating both the new and the familiar in music. Finally, we dive into the creative worlds of hip-hop and cult cinema, exploring the visionary concept album from Lin-Manuel Miranda and Aisa Davis inspired by "The Warriors." Imagining this narrative reimagined through an all-female gang's perspective across New York City gives us chills, and we can't wait to share our thoughts on its potential as a large-scale musical. Stopping to smell the concrete, an injection of inspiration fuel into the tank, and creating different stews. Kelly Finnigan (Monophonics, Kelly Finnigan) Kelly Finnigan “A Lover Was Born” Vinyl- https://www.coleminerecords.com/products/kelly-finnigan-a-lover-was-born "Distance as a measure of time and place informs Kelly Finnigan's, A Lover Was Born with a grit and grace that turns passion into virtue. The latest solo release from The Monophonics frontman roots itself in the best traditions of midwest soul labels like King, Curtom, Dakar, and the Bodie Recording Company. A Lover Was Born is a testimony that these deep cut grooves are not resigned to nostalgia, instead, they are at the burning heart of longing and hope. The journey Finnigan takes listeners on over Lover's eleven tracks echo the state of motion and growth since his solo debut, The Tales People Tell (2019). These two records bookend a prolific period of output, including a pair of Monophonics albums, a Christmas album, a mixtape, and a full slate of producing and engineering (The Ironsides, Alanna Royale, the Sextones). “There's nothing like making records,” says Finnigan. “It feels like that's my purpose — the reason I was put on this earth.” Written in California, Ohio, and Staten Island, Kelly Finnigan collaborated with old friends in and outside the studio. “I enjoy working alone but it's not how you want to make a record…almost everybody I brought in for this album I've worked with, toured with or spent a great deal of time with.” Max and Joe Ramey (The Ironsides), Jimmy James (Parlor Greens), Sergio Rios (Orgone), Joey Crispiano (Dap Kings) and Jay Mumford (aka J-Zone) all contribute to the overall sound of A Lover Was Born. Dramatic influences like Isaac Hayes (check out the piano on “Be Your Own Shelter”) and Jerry Ragovoy are chopped and folded into Northern Soul uptempo numbers to create stompers like “Get a Hold of Yourself” or “Chosen Few”. Finnigan's take on Deep Soul is captured brilliantly on “Walk Away from Me” and “Love (Your Pain Goes Deep)”, while Boom Bap pervades on hard hitters “His Love Ain't Real” & “Cold World”. Slower songs such as “Let Me Count the Reasons”, the emotional “All That's Left”, and the soul-stirring album closer “Count Me Out” show the honest and tender side that has become Finnigan's calling card. All the while, the voice is raw and earthy — in the best tradition of R&B shouters like Otis Redding, Lee Moses, and David Ruffin. The songs on A Lover Was Born reconfigure the spliced and sampled DNA of hip hop (extracted by crate diggers like Dilla and RZA) to create something new, underscoring both the spectrum and depth of soul while making a case to the timelessness of Finnigan's sound." It's a good idea to check in with your favorite works of art as you get older. You may find that you have outgrown certain albums, or that they haven't aged well. Maybe the meaning will deepen over time, as certain aspects of a record mean something different as you move through life with a different perspective. That is the goal with our occasional retrospective episodes... we take a look back at records after 30 years and see what we make of them as adults. This week we are apply9ng that lens to Gravediggaz masterpiece, the misunderstood 6 Feet Deep. DBRP hosts Demone Carter, David Ma and Nate LeBlanc are joined by collaborator Cutso to dissect the album that kicked off the horrorcore movement accidentally. 6 Feet Deep (known by a title we're not at liberty to type in Europe) is one of Prince Paul's masterworks, a theme album about resurrecting rappers who suffered from mismanagement by adopting horror film atmospherics, wild sing song flows, and razor sharp lyrics from his collaborators. Of course, we all know that RZA would go on to change the sound and business environment of hip-hop with Wu-Tang, but fellow Diggaz Frukwan and Too Poetic were perhaps the group members most committed to the bit. The resulting album is one of the most unique in the genre and we're happy to detail why we feel that way. For further discussion on this topic please check out DBRP 77 which contains an interview with Frukwan and any of our previous episodes with Prince Paul interviews as well. This episode was produced by Paolo "Cutso" Bello and we deeply appreciate his involvement. Theme song by DEM ONE and Cutso. Episode art by David Ma. Since the blockbuster success of his musical “Hamilton,” Lin-Manuel Miranda has been busy: acting, directing, and composing for Disney projects, including the upcoming movie “Mufasa: The Lion King.” But his new project is more personal, and a throwback in the best sense. Working with the playwright Eisa Davis, he has reimagined a movie from his childhood as a concept album. “The Warriors” is a cult classic released in 1979. “The Warriors are a gang from Coney Island, and they have to fight their way from the Bronx all the way back down to Coney Island in the course of the film,” Miranda tells David Remnick. The film reads as a nineteen-seventies period piece, but Miranda and Davis find a classical dimension to it. “The tale is an old tale. Sol Yurick, who wrote the novel the movie is based on, based it on the Anabasis, which is a soldier's account of trying to get back home from war” in ancient Greece. “It's this mythic story. . . . It doesn't get more clear than that as a plotline.” To tell that story in song and rap, Miranda brought together a cast of legends including Lauryn Hill, Nas, Marc Anthony, members of the Wu-Tang Clan, and more. If releasing a concept album, meant to be listened to straight through, seems like a stretch for 2024 audiences, Miranda is unfazed. “What's interesting about “Hamilton” is that no one I talked to thought it was a good idea when I was writing it. But I could see it. And it was the idea that wouldn't leave me alone.”

As a founding member of the legendary rap crew Wu-Tang Clan, RZA revolutionized hip-hop with his ear for experimentation — not to mention raw lyricism, grimy beats and countless kung-fu references. Though he didn't initially think of himself as a composer, RZA has leaned into the title in recent years, scoring movies like Quentin Tarantino's “Kill Bill” and Jim Jarmusch's “Ghost Dog.” He talks to Tom about his first album of orchestral music, “A Ballet Through Mud,” and gaining the confidence to call himself a composer.
