In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Patricia and Arun conclude Fantasy Month with the 2005 live action film adapation of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis produced by Walt Disney Studios and Walden Media. There are four children named Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy who were sent to live with a professor after their home was threatened by bomb attacks during World War II. When playing hide and seek, Lucy discovers a wardrobe that took her to a magical land named Narnia where she meets a faun named Tumnus. Lucy tries explaining to her siblings what she discovered, but they don't believe her. Eventually, they enter into Narnia after trying to hide from the housekeeper for breaking a window to the house. Edmund meets The White Witch and promises to bring his siblings to her in exchange to being king and Peter, Susan, and Lucy tries to rescue Edmund after learning that The White Witch is evil and trying to prevent fulfilling a prophecy that she would be defeated by the lion Aslan and four humans who were destined to be kings and queens of Narnia. When the film premiered in theaters, it made over $745 million dollars on a $180 million dollar budget. It was praised for being an faithful adaptation of the book while being epic, adventurous, featuring a stellar cast, and visually stunning with his cinematography, settings, and special effects. However, it has since been lost in the shuffle since it came out during the peak of fantasy film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter films. It currently has a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. Did Patricia and Arun conclude Fantasy Month finding treasure or a major disappointment? In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Arun and Patricia continue Fantasy Month with looking back on the 1991 film adaptation of The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald and produced by the Pannonia Film Studio, Sianel 4 Cymru, and NHK. A princess named Irene has learned that there evil creatures lurking about when she got lost in the woods one evening and was rescued by a young boy named Curdie. He informs her that there are goblins living underground and how to defeat them. One day, she discovers a path to the attic where she meets up with the spirit of her great-great grandmother Irene who gives her a magic thread that will lead her to safety from harm. Meanwhile, the prince of the goblins comes up with the idea to kidnap Princess Irene and force her to marry him so they can take over the surface. Curdie hears this news and rushes to the castle to warn Irene and the king. When the film premiered, it only made $2 million dollars out of its $10 million dollar budget. It was criticized for being uninteresting, boring, and poorly executed, especially since it came out during the Disney Renaissance. It currently has a fan rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. Beagle produced by Rankin/Bass and Topcraft. A unicorn is informed that she is the last of her kind when a red bull summoned by a king named Haggard had kidnapped them and lured them to the ends of the earth. She is rescued by a wizard named Schmendrick and together with the wife of a group of passengers named Molly, they meet up with King Haggard and his son Prince Lir to find the other unicorns. But things get even more tricky when Schmendrick turns the unicorn into a woman, she slowly forgets that she is a unicorn, and falls in love with Prince Lir. When the film came out in theaters, it was praised for its animation, scary moments, fun adventurous tone, and its mysterious appeal. In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Arun and Patricia venture out into a new themed month: Fantasy Month! They begin with the 1977 animated TV adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Hobbit produced by Rankin/Bass and Topcraft. A hobbit named Bilbo Baggins is called in by a wizard named Gandalf to join alongside 13 dwarfs to help defeat a dragon named Smaug who had stolen their treasure and driven them away from their home at the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo, unsure if he's able to partake in a huge task, is convinced by Gandalf that he's the "burglar" they need for their quest. When it first aired on NBC, it was praised by critics for being faithful to the book in 90 minutes with it being an easy story for kids to get involved in as well as fans of the source material. However, some critiques over the years brought up its pace, constant songs, and uneventful journey, especially to those who are more familiar with the Lord of the Rings films directed by Peter Jackson. It currently has a rating of 69% on Rotten Tomatoes. Did Arun and Patricia begin their journey to Fantasy Month with an epic start or a mediocre path? In this epic-length episode of Watch.Read.Listen. (the first in our Fantasy Month), we discuss Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings films, both in their own right and as adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's novel. This episode can be seen as the first of a two-parter on Jackson's adaptations of Tolkien's works as next week we will discuss The Hobbit films. What makes a good adaptation? What effects do the changes made have on the stories? In our This Week segment: David focused on rewatching The Lord of the Rings, although he did watch some of the DC animated movies, including Justice League: The Flash Paradox. Duane read Martian Comics#1-3 (check out the Martian Lit Kickstarter for the next issue, The Canals of Earth); listened to Alice Isn't Dead, the new podcast from the creators of Welcome to Night Vale; and watched Grace Randolph on Beyond the Trailer attempt to explain away the negativity around Batman v Superman. Both he and his wife watched Deadpool (read Duane's article "Deadpool v Batman v Superman") and The Path (new Hulu series with Aaron Paul and Hugh Dancy).
