Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 26, 2025 is: circuitous • ser-KYOO-uh-tus • adjective If something—such as a path, route, or journey—is described as circuitous, it is not straight, short, and direct, but rather takes a circular or winding course. Circuitous can also describe speech or writing that is not said or done simply or clearly. // He took a circuitous route to town, stopping at several of his favorite shops even though it added minutes and miles to his trip. // While either method will yield the correct answer, one is far less circuitous and therefore considered superior. See the entry > Examples: “… like Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole, Ms. Lakey took a circuitous path to open a psychedelic community center. It involved a stint in the Amazon rainforest, a pen-pal in a maximum security federal prison and an auspicious meeting at a sushi restaurant in New Mexico.” — Rachel Nuwer, The New York Times, 8 Oct. 2023 Did you know? In J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, the titular hero Bilbo Baggins takes a circuitous route to the Lonely Mountain, which he helps to reclaim from a monstrous dragon. Although he successfully arrives there—and returns home again—we do not use the adjective circuitous to suggest that his path traces a perfect circle. We'll get straight to it: although both circuitous and its relative circuit share roots in circus, the Latin word for “circle” (and ancestor of the English words circle and circus), neither need conjure something shaped like, say, a ring. Just as the noun circuit can refer to an indirect route, circuitous describes routes which can appear circular when mapped, but can also be jagged, squiggly, etc. The point is that a journey such as Bilbo's is not straight, short, or direct, but rather rambling. When used figuratively, circuitous describes something that is not said or done simply and clearly; an example might be a rambling speech about manners in dangerous situations when a direct “Never laugh at live dragons” would suffice.

Several days pass in a standoff; the dwarves are trapped inside Lonely Mountain, and the armed men and elves block the exit. Roäc, the raven, reappears and reports that Dain and his troop of 500 are near but predicts that is not enough force to defeat the opposing troops. He again encourages Thorin to settle the affair peacefully. Thorin rejects this advice, and in despair Bilbo Baggins decides to take action, trying to force Thorin's hand. Still in possession of the Arkenstone, Bilbo takes a turn at guard duty and heads to the elves' camp. When he is taken to the leaders, Bard and the Elvenking, Bilbo reports the movement of Dain's warriors and gives the Arkenstone to them, hoping they can use it to bargain with Thorin. Bilbo meets Gandalf in the camp, but he returns to the dwarves in the fortress. The Hobbit: Written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Soundtrack composed by Howard Shore. The journey through Middle-earth begins here with J.R.R. Tolkien's classic prelude to his Lord of the Rings trilogy. “A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible... All those, young or old, who love a fine adventurous tale, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts.”—The New York Times Book Review "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." So begins one of the most beloved and delightful tales in the English language—Tolkien's prelude to The Lord of the Rings. Set in the imaginary world of Middle-earth, at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale, The Hobbit is one of literature's most enduring and well-loved novels. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.

Bard tells the citizens the dragon will attack the community. Many people get in boats to escape the fire and destruction, but Bard and other archers try to slay the beast. The old thrush—who overheard the mention of Smaug's weakness—carries that information to Bard. With information on Smaug's unprotected spot, the defender uses a last black arrow and kills Smaug. Survivors of Lake-town arrive on shore where they face desperate conditions; winter is coming, and they are without food or shelter. Fortunately the Elvenking and his warriors arrive. An agreement is reached by which some men and elves will remain to build shelters and find provisions while a party will set out for Lonely Mountain to verify the fate of Thorin and of the treasure in Smaug's lair. In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Arun and Patricia venture out into a new themed month: Fantasy Month! They begin with the 1977 animated TV adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Hobbit produced by Rankin/Bass and Topcraft. A hobbit named Bilbo Baggins is called in by a wizard named Gandalf to join alongside 13 dwarfs to help defeat a dragon named Smaug who had stolen their treasure and driven them away from their home at the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo, unsure if he's able to partake in a huge task, is convinced by Gandalf that he's the "burglar" they need for their quest. When it first aired on NBC, it was praised by critics for being faithful to the book in 90 minutes with it being an easy story for kids to get involved in as well as fans of the source material. However, some critiques over the years brought up its pace, constant songs, and uneventful journey, especially to those who are more familiar with the Lord of the Rings films directed by Peter Jackson. It currently has a rating of 69% on Rotten Tomatoes. Did Arun and Patricia begin their journey to Fantasy Month with an epic start or a mediocre path? Well, this was a tough one, folks... We spend the first quarter of this episode explaining a loss we've experienced on and off the podcast and why one of us is no longer with us. With no super-smooth transition possible after that, we do try to carry on with our usual geeky topics... - What TV shows have we been watching lately, including Marvel & DC related shows? - Which co-host is watching the Critical Role cartoon "Vox Machina"? - What do Dave & Todd think about the current season of "Outlander"? (A couple more episodes have come out since we recorded this episode; Todd is impressed.) - How many current & recent big-screen movie releases has Dave caught up on lately, and what did he think of them all? - What YouTube channels does Todd recommend? - What is the TV show "Lore" all about? - What do we think about the whole Oscars/Smith/Rock/Slap incident, and does one of us think it might have been staged? - What accent does Todd need to improve on for his new D&D character? - What kind of characters are Andruw & Preston playing in the new D&D campaign? - And, what's the current news with "Babylon 5," "Stargate," and "The Orville." Listen now, for the answers to these and other poignant questions. SPECIAL THANKS to the "Katrina & Friends" YouTube channel and specifically Daniel Beachy, Dave Miller, and David Fisher, for their moving cover of the gospel song "Angel Band," and for giving us permission to use the song in this episode (at the very end) for a very special reason. Check out the video of their performance of the song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktthBzyJ_rY Also, my sincerest apologies for the bad audio on my (Todd's) track. Somehow I didn't notice that the built-in microphone on my laptop was inadvertently set as the input instead of my podcasting microphone. Of all the episodes to make that mistake on, this was the worst one for me to do that on. Other Dyatlovs continues the dive into these Russian mysteries. Similar to Khamar-Daban, the strange deaths at Chivruay Pass leave nothing but questions for these other Dyatlovs. Flora dives deeply into the mystery to tell the story and explanations of what happened in 1973 on the Kola Peninsula. During a popular hike along a relatively easy path, 10 hikers seemingly split up and died overnight. Explanations range from vengeful spirits to KGB hits. How did these young people meet their fate on that snowy mountain pass? Why were they found in different places with missing eyes and blackened skin? David breaks down each explanation and offers some critical thought in the second part of this episode of Blurry Photos! Don't forget to watch me stream games on Twitch! This week on the podcast, we catch up with Bilbo and company at the Lonely Mountain and discuss some key differences between The Hobbit and the rest of Tolkien's legendarium, as well as one controlling theme which unites this work and the Lord of the Rings. We consider the question: is courage determined by your Tookish blood? Also: musings on sacred art and beauty, the earthly liturgy as a living image of the heavenly liturgy, and one way altar servers are like angels! This is a recording of one of the sessions on Tolkien held this summer, 2021. Of the topics considered, the nature of dragons is paramount. What is a dragon? Tolkien said "I desired dragons with a profound desire. Of course, I in my timid body did not wish to have them in the neighborhood . . . . But the world that contained even the imagination of Fáfnir was richer and more beautiful, at whatever cost of peril.” Tolkien's dragons are of the Western variety. Treasure hording, highly intelligent, they cannot ignore riddles but are inhuman in their destructive nature and tend to spread despair & half-truths through their greed and hatred. The English word, "dragon", derives (via Middle English, Old French, and Latin) from Ancient Greek δράκων drákōn, "serpent, dragon", from δέρκομαι, "I see", ἒδρακον, "I saw", δἐδορκα, "I have seen" (in various senses); hence perhaps "sharp-sighted one"; or because a snake's eyes seem to be always open. The Greek word probably derives from an Indo-European base derk- meaning "to see"; the Sanskrit root dŗç- also means "to see". Dragons, therefore, have to do with vision, insight, wisdom. They are "the final test of heroes" as professor Tolkien wrote. The encounter with a Western dragon poses a tremendous challenge but the reward for success, as Dr. Jordan Peterson points out, is riches beyond compare. Bilbo, we find, encounters the dragon under Lonely Mountain, but not necessarily in the way we might expect. Listen in to found out. Famous Western (European) Dragons 1. In this episode we look at Chapter 2 of The Hobbit, "Roast Mutton."  We talk about they mythic history of trolls and how the many incarnations they have had through the millennia.  We talk about the opening stages of Bilbo's journey towards the Lonely Mountain, and how it looked when Tolkien first wrote it versus how he would have liked for it to look at the end of his life, we talk about Bilbo's incredible luck and we play with the idea that, by chapter 2, the story still really hasn't finished growing up yet.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/westofvalinor)

In this episode Wrey, Shannon & Josh in the background flow in and out of beer and board games, specifically Star Wars X-Wing from Fantasy Flight Games and the 3 Hobbit-themed beers from Central City Brewing. The Smaug Stout: Smaug Stout (9.5% alc./vol) is styled after a classic Russian Imperial Stout, but with a subtle hint of Habanero chilies to remind you of the fire and danger awaiting Bilbo and to the Company of Dwarves in their journey to The Lonely Mountain. Pronounced notes of coffee and chocolate balanced with Northwest Hops and a touch of heat produce an exceptional imperial stout, a worthy reward for your hard-fought journey.  The Gollum Precious Pils: With flavors as smooth and crafty as Gollum himself, the Gollum Pilsner (5% alc./vol) is brewed in the classic Bavarian tradition, using only the finest two-row barley, and hops from the Hallertau region of Germany. This light and golden Pilsner has a distinct hop aroma and flavour, with a dry, crisp finish.Like the One Ring which Gollum has spent his life pursuing, the “precious” pils, if your quest leads you to it, may not extend your life, but it may make your journey a little more enjoyable! The Bolg Belgian Tripel: An Orc chieftain who ruled for 150 years, Bolg seems like the kind who would drink his grog of choice and no one would tell him otherwise; however, this flavorful strong BelgianTripel(8% alc./vol) may be too refined for this otherwise gruesome character.
