In this episode Charlie and George find themselves in the brutal Hyborian Age to revisit Conan the Barbarian! But they're not alone in this mythic quest; they're joined by special guest Dr. Tomas Rawlings, who brings an extensive knowledge of Conan canon! These three brave pod-warriors explore the literary origins of Conan (arguably starting the fantasy genre as we now know it), the film's production challenges and the casting of one Arnold Schwarzenegger, in his breakout role. With a character that's almost 100 years old, there's a lot to discuss in Suspicious Spin Offs, as well as the usual alternative casting in Coulda Woulda Shoulda and only a smattering of Arnie impressions. In this week's Panel Chewing: Pick of the Week, Steve and Jarrod are back with a stacked lineup as they continue catching up on recent reads—diving into indie standouts, superhero staples, and everything in between. From deep space survival in Astral Quantum to gritty pulp crime in City of Demons, and supernatural tension in Estuary: A Ghost Story, there's no shortage of variety. The guys also tackle familiar territory with Marvel and DC, questioning whether titles like Daredevil and Detective Comics still bring anything new to the table—or if they're stuck in a cycle of “more of the same.”On the indie side, books like Hyde Street, Neighborhood Watch, and Pretty Hate Machine show off the creativity smaller publishers are bringing right now, while Conan the Barbarian continues to impress with a near pick-of-the-week performance. But when it comes time to choose, Jarrod goes with a powerful, emotional issue of Minor Arcana that hits harder than expected, while Steve surprises himself with Kilroy Is Here—a one-shot that leaves a lasting impact.Plus, the guys break down this week's group read from Batman's Grant Morrison run (Batman and Son, issues #667–668), exploring its unexpected murder mystery twist and standout artwork.Whether you're into indie comics, superhero books, or just looking for your next great read—this week's episode has something for you.And of course… what was your pick of the week?Send us a message (I'm not able to reply)Support the showPage Chewing BlogPage Chewing ForumFilm Chewing PodcastSpeculative Speculations Podcast Support the podcast via PayPalSupport the show by using our Amazon Affiliate linkJoin Riverside.fm Co-Hosts:JarrodVarsha ChrisJoseCarl D. Conan the Barbarian is Robert E. Howard's iconic swordslinger, the gold standard of sword-and-sorcery heroes. It's hard to imagine a more quintessentially pulpy world than the one where Conan makes his living with steely thews, panther-like reflexes, and a well-documented appreciation for fair-skinned women in diaphanous gowns. Young Tom kept these books on his shelf—dog-eared, tattered, and worn thin from countless rereadings. But will the tales still enchant young-at-heart Tom the same way today? Let's find out.TTYpodcast.comThumbingthroughyesterday.com

This month Brian is up to the challenge and taking 5 weeks to cover the evolution of Arnold Schwarzenegger as an actor in the 1980's. And while there may be one film in particular that is missing for the month, we are starting off week one strong with Conan the Barbarian (1982) as well as some supplemental talk about Conan the Destroyer (1984). In these early films we see Arnold getting his first real acting start and speaking roles (although minimally) in his role as Conan.Tune in as we break this down. This episode, we take a trip south to Dothan, AL, on the Alabama/Florida border. Mike struck gold when he found Knight Vigil Comics. Embedded in an antique mall, this shop has a humble presence, but what it lacks in size and flashiness it more than makes up for in style and old-fashioned comic goodness. The owner, Tim, is a consummate gentleman, has a deep love for comics, and he has a remarkable story. The shop is wall to wall back issue comics and sports some great art all around. Tim also has a significant presence on eBay. So, get ready for Tim and his super story about Knight Vigil Comics! Then, Mike is joined by longtime podcaster podcast editor extraordinaire, Steeven Orr of the Steeven Or Else Network! Steeven has to be one of the most creative people in podcasting. He not only uses his sound editing skills to make every episode of the Roadshow sound as good as it can, but he is also the brain and the voice behind the promos for Roadshow AND the Campus Comics Cast. Considering his love for all things Conan, not to mention the fact that one of his shows is called Hither Came Conan, he was the natural choice for a guest host! 99 Cent Rental returns after our October break with a listener request. Since we just did Don Coscarelli's 1979 debut, Phantasm, a movie made on tiny, sub-500k budget, we thought it made a lot of sense to see what happens when you break through and Hollywood heaps cash on you to make a proper movie. The result is... very Coscarelli-ish. There's no question whatsoever that Don is well-read on matters of fantasy and science fiction and these being the days before Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies mandated that all fantasy features be epic, high-fantasy blow-outs, Coscarelli reaches back into the pool of gritty sword and sorcery for something as characteristically weird as you'd expect from authors like Poul Anderson, Fritz Lieber, and Robert E. Howard. Is it good, though? Well...The story concerns the hunky, flaxen-haired Dar, the last of his people, who sets out across a dusty landscape seeking vengeance on Maax, the head of a wicked cult in the city of Aruk who will be killed by the son of King Zed. By some unexplainable power, Dar can speak to animals and forms a party of two ferrets, a tiger, and a hawk to have his revenge. Starring Marc Singer, Tanya Roberts, and Rip Torn, The Beastmaster lands heavily in the middle of the 1982 surge of fantasy movies that brought us Conan The Barbarian and managed to carve out a sweet cult of fans in spite of its tepid box office performance.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon:https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/
