Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris board the SAG Cartoon Express to discuss an episode of the Dragon's Lair cartoon. With a game this creative and colorful as its source material, surely it must be at least okay, right? RIGHT? Then, in Week Old News, James Pond is back! AGAIN! Limited Run's LRG3 brings some unexpected revivals our way, Final Fantasy's history is all but gone, and the creator of VVVVVV makes a game about an egg for some reason. Finally, in the Checkpoint, Dan and Kris had some rough weeks, and didn't have much time for games. Or sleep. Enjoy! On today's Geek Freaks Headlines, we break down Square Enix's plan to have generative AI handle about 70% of quality assurance and debugging by the end of 2027, announced the same day employees in the company's Western business were told to expect layoffs across departments. We talk through what AI could realistically cover in testing, where it's likely to fail without human oversight, community reactions, and what this might mean for future Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts releases. Timestamps & Topics00:00 — Square Enix's AI QA headline and 2027 target00:06 — Same-day layoffs across Western business units00:12 — What tasks AI could automate in QA and debugging00:20 — Risks: hallucinated fixes and flaky tests without human review00:38 — Why human testers still matter for story, balance, and edge cases00:54 — “Inevitable” cost-cutting and industry trend concerns01:02 — Community reactions and recent FF/KH quality chatter01:19 — Consumer choice: voicing concerns with your wallet01:32 — A quick pop-culture nod to Grandma's Boy and the “dream QA job”01:49 — Closing thoughts and listener promptKey TakeawaysSquare Enix aims for AI to handle most repetitive QA tasks, with humans validating complex scenarios and final quality. The plan surfaced alongside news of layoffs, raising questions about the near-term impact on teams and titles.AI can speed throughput, but unverified suggestions risk false positives, bad fixes, and broken gameplay loops.Human testers remain critical for narrative cohesion, balance, accessibility, and unusual player behavior.Players who care about this shift can give feedback directly and let purchasing decisions reflect their values.Memorable Quotes“Best case is AI handles the small, repetitive checks, and humans make sure the changes actually work.”“It sucks to see people lose jobs, but companies will embrace AI to save money.”“If quality matters to you, tell publishers with your feedback and your wallet.”Call to ActionEnjoyed the episode? Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels, and welcome back to another edition of 'Save it for the 'cast!' As always, Kevin gets things rolling with a quick recap on some of the games he's been playing lately — including a trio of indie games that he recently recorded videos for, alongside a mildly disappointing first impression of Disney Illusion Island on Nintendo Switch. John jumps into the conversation after that, as we touch on a few more random indie games & do a little episode coordinating for the podcast proper, before sliding into some unexpected chit chat about various games in the Final Fantasy series. There's much to be said about how The Outer Worlds 2 was handled prior to its release. Halloween is here, and so obviously it's time to play a not Jeopardy game about playing the Final Fantasy game about Tactics! Will the game include permadeath? Will the game culminate with us fighting God? Ya, probably both; why not?

Final Fantasy 12 has some devastatingly beautiful music, and only one single song on the entire soundtrack was written by Nobuo Uematsu. The rest was done by Hitoshi Sakimoto, with some additional contributions by Masaharu Iwata. While we all miss Nobuo Uematsu, Hitoshi Sakimoto absolutely nailed it on this soundtrack. It's incredible! Mike and Casen come out of this episode with an even higher opinion of this OST and a greater excitement to dive back into the game in the possibly near future.... **We're Now On Spotify**: https://open.spotify.com/show/4gIzzvT3AfRHjGlfF8kFW3 **Listen On Soundcloud**: https://soundcloud.com/resonantarc **Listen On iTunes**: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/state-of-the-arc-podcast/id1121795837 **Listen On Pocket Cast**: http://pca.st/NJsJ Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/resonantarc Subscribe Star: https://www.subscribestar.com/resonant-arc Twitter: https://twitter.com/resonantarc Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/resonantarc Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/resonantarc TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@resonantarc

In today's Daily Fix:Microsoft is saying the controversial price of the ROG Xbox Ally X wasn't set by them, but rather hardware maker ASUS. The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are $599 and $999 respectively, and feature Xbox-themed UI and connect to the users' Xbox accounts, but are technically ASUS products under the ROG brand. Despite the price, Microsoft claims the devices have sold out on the Xbox store and other retailers, and the critical response has been overall positive, despite the steep price. In other news, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3's co-director is saying that the game's combat system is not yet decided, despite calls for the series to return to turn-based roots. This comes after the surprise success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which features many game mechanics popularized by JRPGs like classic FF titles. And finally, a leak about more Resident Evil remakes may prove to be real, with reports saying Resident Evil 0 and Code Veronica are next on Capcom's to-do list.

Chris Davis and Nick deliver some early impressions of Ghost of Yotei and discuss how Sucker Punch approached the sequel from a design standpoint. Brad also shines some light on an inspired new indie game, Consume Me, which is already sweeping up awards but struggling a little to gain traction for consumers. Banter - Spooky season is here!
