It is always a thrill to have Frank on the show, and once again we get great true crime insights from both Frank and Burl. who give us preview of their new true crime book coming out this year.****Best-selling author Frank C. Girardot has been called the "Demon dog of true crime" by none other than Black Dahlia author James Ellroy. Praise for his writing has come from authors as varied as Walter Kirn and Michael Fleeman. His books have ranged from "Name Dropper", a chronicle on the bizarre antics of a murdering imposter who called himself Clark Rockefeller to "Betrayal in Blue" a look at cocaine dealing cops in 1980s New York City, which was co-authored by Burl Barer and Ken Eurell, one of the actual cops.In all of his writing, Girardot's ability to interview complicated characters like drug kingpin Adam Diaz, German imposter Christian Gerhartsreiter and serial arsonist John Orr, add a depth to his story telling that is often lacking in police procedurals masking as true crime. In each of his books, Girardot has displayed a unique ability to locate long-hidden public records and distill narratives from complex court records that brings his stories to life. Girardot's career in journalism began as a copyboy with the now-defunct Los Angeles Herald Examiner. As a reporter he covered stories as fascinating as the O.J. Simpson murder trial and as complex as the mistaken gang execution of three trick-or-treaters on Halloween 1993 in the Los Angeles area.
TWISTED TWINS was scheduled to be the season premier of KILLER SIBLINGS on Oxygen, but a suicide threat by the twins' father caused that episode to never be aired. Travis Webb di[d research for Burl's adaptation of the episode for the forthcoming book TWISTED TWINS, also featuring award winning true crime author Frank C. Girardot, Jr.

What comes to mind at the mention of fires in the L.A. area in the early 1990's? Eclipsed in the national news by things like police brutality, riots and the infamous OJ Simpson trial, The Pillow Pyro and the prolific string of arsons he committed is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. Tune in to find out how investigators began to suspect John Orr, an otherwise esteemed air force veteran and fire captain. Elysia walks us through John's early life, who he was as a family man, and the hunt for The Pillow Pyro as Savannah picks John out of a line up and discusses her love of certain mustached men. Ethical journalists are in great dismay as sensationalism and " spin and division" take over social media and agenda driven so-called NEWS outlets. Award winning journalist and true crime author Frank Girardot Jr. discusses this crises with Burl Barer and Mark Boyer.

Most recently, Girardot wrote a weekly column on the 2016 election for The Hill. Born in Texas in 1960, Richard Ramirez was an American serial killer who killed at least 14 people and raped and tortured at least two dozen more, mostly during the spring and summer of 1985. After developing epilepsy as a child, he became a heavy drug user and cultivated an interest in Satanism, which became a calling card for investigators at his crime scenes. Apprehended in August 1985, Ramirez was sentenced to death at the conclusion of his trial in 1989. He spent the remainder of his days at California's San Quentin Prison, before dying from cancer on June 7, 2013, at age 53. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support
Prepare to be shocked as the grisly details about the murder of computer geek John Sohus are revealed in Frank C. Girardot s new book, Name Dropper: Investigating the Clark Rockefeller Mystery. Sohus, a twenty-something resident of San Marino, California, was allegedly murdered in 1985 by con man Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, who has become infamous under his most-known alias, Clark Rockefeller. Rockefeller, the prime suspect in Sohus murder, may have been the last person to see him alive. Nine years after his death, Sohus bones were dug up in the backyard of the home he once shared with his wife Linda, whose whereabouts remain unknown. Rockefeller s 2008 arrest for abducting his daughter put him squarely in the cross-hairs of the decades-old Sohus homicide case. Upon Rockefeller s arrest, Girardot began piecing together the convoluted tale in a series of articles for the Pasadena Star-News. His research resulted in Name Dropper, which reveals inside information about the case Girardot says is the most fantastic he s seen in his 25 years as an investigative reporter. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support

For years Lori Orr believed her Los Angeles firefighter dad was a selfless hero. When Lori’s dad was arrested and charged with four murders and countless arson fires, it was her testimony that helped keep him from being sent to Death Row. Eventually, Lori’s search for the truth lead her to the dark secrets lurking in her family’s past and to an inescapable conclusion about the remorseless killer and arsonist known as the "Pillowcase Pyro" and his reign of terror in sunny Southern California.EXCERPT: A hardware store employee saw the flames as they roared toward him down one of the overstocked aisles. A group of employees ran by and he herded them toward a nearby fire escape. The fire was sucking all of the oxygen out of the room and when they got the door open, the group of panicked shoppers and employees running for their lives were literally pushed out of the door as though they were shot from a cannon.“It was coming. Coming fast toward us. The flame, the fire, everything.”Together with award-winning journalist Frank C. Girardot Jr., Orr looks back on the journey that took her from love to fear and the search for answers about how the father she loved could also be a thrill-seeking predator. A predator brought to justice by a dogged investigator no one wanted to believe. A master manipulator who participated in the writing of this memoir in hopes that it would redeem him in the eyes of his family and others who trusted and believed in him. They had no fear of the cops because they were the cops. NYPD officers Mike Dowd and Kenny Eurell knew there were two ways to get rich quick in Brooklyn's Lower East Side. You either became drug dealers, or you robbed drug dealers. They decided to do both. BETRAYAL IN BLUE: The Shocking Memoir of the Scandal That Rocked The NYPD is the story of Dowd and Eurell, two cops who ran the most powerful gang in New York’s dangerous 75th Precinct, the crack cocaine capitol of 1980s America. These “Cocaine Cops” formed a lucrative alliance with Adam Diaz, the kingpin of an ever-expanding Dominican drug cartel. Soon Mike and Ken were buying fancy cars no cop could afford, and treating their wives to levels of luxury not associated with a patrol officer's salary. They were daring, dangerous and untouchable. Then “the biggest police scandal in New York history” exploded into the headlines with the arrest of Mike, Ken, and their fellow crooked cops. Released on bail, Mike offered Ken a long shot at escape to Central America—a bizarre plan involving robbery, kidnapping, and murder—forcing Ken to choose between two forms of betrayal. Adapted from Ken Eurell's shocking personal memoir, plus hundreds of hours of exclusive interviews with the major players, including former international drug lord, Adam Diaz, and Dori Eurell, BETRAYAL IN BLUE reveals the truth behind what you didn’t see in the hit documentary THE SEVEN FIVE. Edgar Award winner Burl Barer once again teams with award-winning journalist Frank C. Girardot, Jr, and Eurell to bring you an astonishing story of greed and betrayal.
