Julian Schlossberg - MovieTalk, Memoirs & the Magic of Show Business Learn more about Julian at: JULIAN SCHLOSSBERG - Home    Listen to his podcast at: Home | Julian Episode Highlights   The Radio That Fueled Imagination: Julian grew up with radio first—imagining the Lone Ranger's range and Jack Benny's vault. Television's arrival felt like magic: free shows, baseball games, and variety programs, all in his home.   The Audition That Never Happened: On his first day job hunting, Julian told a white lie to an interviewer—"You don't remember me, but you told me to finish college and come back." The interviewer said, "I remember." He got the job. His mother couldn't believe it happened on day one.   The Ziegfeld Miracle: As a 27-year-old running the "white elephant" Ziegfeld Theater, Julian booked *That's Entertainment*, *Tommy*, and *Roller Coaster*—grossing $3 million in one year when top tickets were $3-$4. Studios decided he "must know something."   The Barry Diller Negotiation: When Paramount's Barry Diller wanted Julian in LA, Julian refused to leave New York. Diller offered two weeks in NY, two in LA. Julian said no again—and got hired anyway.   “Nobody But You": Early in his marriage, Julian complained about his office messing up. His wife said, "Nobody but you." It took the wind right out of his sails—and kept him grounded.   The Orson Welles Restoration: Julian's proudest achievement: restoring and distributing Orson Welles' *Othello*, which had languished in a vault for 40 years. No one else wanted it. He spent eight months raising money and fixing the film so the world could finally see it.   Stay on the Ledge: Julian's advice to aspiring creatives: "You don't let go of the ledge. Actors are wounded people—they've been rejected constantly, yet they kept going because they wanted the prize.   Show Notes

“ALMOST MARRIED TO THE MOB: HOLLYWOOD ACTRESSES WHO DATED MOBSTERS” - 1/19/2026  (123) In this episode, we slip into the shadows where classic Hollywood glamour meets organized crime, exploring the classic Hollywood actresses who found themselves romantically entangled with real-life mobsters. At a time when studios tightly controlled female stars' images, these notorious bad boys offered something intoxicatingly different: raw power beyond the backlot, fierce loyalty, protection from predators both on and off the screen, and a rebellious thrill that defied Hollywood's carefully scripted rules. Drawn by charisma, thrills and maybe even a little danger, these women navigated a world where diamonds, nightclubs, and whispered threats coexisted with premieres and press junkets—and where love could be as risky as it was seductive. This week, we're looking at the romantic entanglements that occurred when the mob meets Hollywood.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Tinseltown Gangsters” The Rise & Decline of the Mob in Hollywood (2024), by Jeffrey Sussman; Handsome Johnny: The Life & Death of Johnny Rosselli, Gentleman Gangster, Hollywood Producer, CIA Assassin (2018), by Lee Server; Double Cross: The Explosive Inside Story of the Mobster Who Controlled America (2016), by Sam Giancana, Chuck Giancana, & Bettina Giancana; Hollywood & The Mob (2011), by Tim Adler; An American Mafioso: The Johnny Rosselli Story (1991), by Charles Rappleye; Detour: A Hollywood Story (1988), by Cheryl Crane; Lana: The Lady, the Legend, The Truth (1982), by Lana Turner; “Sam Giancana: Chicago Godfather, CIA Collaborator, And The Man Who May Have Put JFK In The White House,” May 16. 2024,  by Carly Silver, ATI.com; “Two Survivors: The Scandalous Saga of Lana Turner and Cheryl Crane,” June 8, 2023, by Hadley Hall Meares, Vanity Fair; “Actor Lana Turner's Daughter Kills Turner's Gangster Lover,” 2022, by Thomas DeBose, EBSCO.com “New Allegations Emerge About Marilyn Monroe's Final Hours,” May 11. 2012, CBSNews.com; “The Gangster and The Goddess,” April 1999, by Patricia Bosworth, Vanity Fair; “Killers Gave Rosselli Drink, Shot Him in Belly,” August 10, 1976, by William Tucker, The Miami News;  “The Thug. Peter Krask, creator of Myth Merchant and former Hollywood producer, shares his journey from quitting grad school to producing reality TV to building a business around storytelling and mythology. After realizing a PhD wasn't his path, Krask dove into the entertainment industry, learning the business side of creativity—budgets, staff, international shipping, and legitimacy through visibility. He explains how being on television instantly validated his work in ways that years of independent effort couldn't, why many people stay in PhD programs despite knowing it's not right for them, and what he's learned about balancing artistic ambition with commercial viability. This conversation explores the tension between creative freedom and financial sustainability, the cultural weight of visible success, and how mythology and narrative shape the way we understand our lives and work. A platinum beauty with an ugly secret; a tall, dark, and handsome husband with murder in his eyes; starkly lit interiors that may or may not include the silhouette of a rotund British gentleman…. This may sound like a catalog of images from the films of Alfred Hitchcock, but it is just as much an encapsulation of the works of Joan Harrison, a studio-era producer, a prolific cinematic storyteller, and a pioneer of female-centered suspense media at mid-century. Harrison remains best known as Alfred Hitchcock's right-hand woman—that is, to the extent that she is known at all. Christina Lane has written the first-ever book dedicated to the life and art of Joan Harrison, entitled Phantom Lady: Hollywood Producer Joan Harrison, The Forgotten Woman Behind Hitchcock (Chicago Review Press, February 2020). Born into a middle-class family in Surrey, Harrison took a secretarial job with Alfred Hitchcock as an aimless twenty-something, only to become a producer on films including Foreign Correspondent (1940), Rebecca (1940), and Suspicion (1941). In the 1940s, Harrison branched out, building a solo career producing movies for RKO and Universal Studios, only to return to the Hitchcock fold to run TV's Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955-1962). In this discussion, Lane shares how she uncovered this obscure history, placing this “phantom lady” at the center of her own story. She also discusses the trajectory of Harrison's career and how she adapted her research for a broader readership. Christina Lane is Professor in the Cinematic Arts Department at the University of Miami and Edgar®-Award winning author of Phantom Lady: Joan Harrison, the Forgotten Woman Behind Hitchcock. She provides commentary for such outlets as the Daily Mail, CrimeReads and AirMail, and has been a featured guest speaker at the Film Forum, and on NPR and Turner Classic Movies. Annie Berke is the Film Editor at the Los Angeles Review of Books and author of Their Own Best Creations: Women Writers in Postwar Television (University of California Press, 2022). Federal authorities have charged five individuals, including a former Hollywood director and two medical doctors, in connection with the ketamine overdose death of "Friends" star Matthew Perry. The charges were announced by the Department of Justice in Los Angeles, revealing a complex and underground criminal network that allegedly took advantage of Perry's struggle with addiction. Erik Fleming, 54, a former Hollywood director and producer, pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine and one count of distribution of ketamine resulting in death. Fleming admitted to distributing 50 vials of ketamine, with half of those vials being delivered just four days before Perry's death in October 2023. According to court documents, Fleming coordinated the drug sales with Jasveen Sangha, known as "The Ketamine Queen," and was responsible for delivering cash from Perry's assistant to Sangha in exchange for the ketamine. The Department of Justice described Fleming's role as that of a drug dealer, operating within a larger criminal network. U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada stated, "These defendants took advantage of Mr. Perry's addiction issues to enrich themselves. They knew what they were doing was risking great danger to Mr. Perry, but they did it anyway." Fleming, along with other defendants, faces up to 25 years in prison. The investigation into Perry's death uncovered a broader scheme involving several individuals, including Dr. Salvador Plasencia, a licensed medical doctor who allegedly worked with Fleming and Perry's live-in assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa. Plasencia is accused of obtaining ketamine from another doctor, Mark Chavez, and distributing it to Perry over a two-month period in exchange for $55,000 in cash. The vials, which cost the doctors only $12 each, were sold to Perry for $2,000 per vial. Estrada highlighted the greed and callousness of the defendants, noting that Plasencia referred to Perry as a "moron" in text messages and expressed a desire to be the actor's "go-to for drugs." Despite knowing the dangers of ketamine, Plasencia continued to supply it to Perry, even as the actor's addiction spiraled out of control. During his arraignment, Plasencia pleaded not guilty to the charges, appearing in court with shackled feet. His attorney, Stefan Sacks, argued that Plasencia should not be prohibited from treating other patients as a condition of his employment, claiming that the doctor had already surrendered his Drug Enforcement Administration license and could no longer prescribe controlled substances. The government, however, contended that Plasencia acted as a "street-corner drug dealer after money and profit." The other defendants in the case, including Perry's assistant and Dr. Chavez, have entered plea agreements on federal drug charges. Jasveen Sangha, who is alleged to have sold the batch of ketamine that killed Perry, was arrested alongside Plasencia. The case has drawn significant attention due to Perry's celebrity status and the involvement of individuals who once held positions of influence in Hollywood. Fleming, who directed and produced films in the late 1990s and early 2000s, had transitioned to working within a production company co-run by Sydney Holland, a former girlfriend of media mogul Sumner Redstone. With the trial of these individuals pending, the case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of addiction and the lengths to which some will go to exploit vulnerable individuals for financial gain. #MatthewPerry #KetamineOverdose #ErikFleming #SalvadorPlasencia #JasveenSangha #HollywoodScandal #DrugDistribution Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? I recorded the intro to this episode earlier this week and already it's outdated! The strike is over! We can now talk about how GREAT Carol Baum is. Carol Baum has produced thirty-four movies, seventeen of them independently. Before becoming an independent producer, Baum was co-president of Sandollar Productions, Dolly Parton and Sandy Gallin's production company, for ten years, where she produced such hits as Father of the Bride; the Academy Award-winning HBO documentary Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt; Tidy Endings; I.Q.; Jacknife; True Identity; Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Gross Anatomy; Shining Through; Straight Talk; and Kicking and Screaming. As an indie producer, Baum made, among other movies, including The Good Girl; You Kill Me; and Boychoir. She has produced five television movies for Hallmark and several documentaries.  Her roots are in New York City, where she spent her early career in publishing, working for both Bantam Books and Random House and scouting for the English publisher Corgi. While in New York, she developed Ira Levin's The Stepford Wives, Stephen King's The Shining, and Ira Levin's The Boys from Brazil. When she relocated to Los Angeles, Baum became a studio vice president at Twentieth Century Fox and a senior vice president at Lorimar, where she developed Taylor Hackford's An Officer and a Gentleman. Following her stint as an executive, she produced David Cronenberg's Dead Ringers. Baum currently teaches producing in the Film and Television Production Division at USC's School of Cinematic Arts. She is also a mentor for the Peter Stark Producing Program at USC.
