Picture this: It's the 1960s, your Welsh hometown is dying, and everyone's telling you to accept reality and move to London. Instead, you read about American libraries closing down and think, "You know what? Opportunity." So you buy crates of abandoned books, ship them to Wales, open a bookshop in an old fire station, purchase a medieval castle, and turn it into a 24-hour honor-system bookstore. Then, for your next trick, you declare your town an independent kingdom and crown yourself monarch. The media goes insane, tourism explodes, and suddenly your "joke" has spawned dozens of copycat book towns worldwide and an international literary festival that attracts more visitors than your entire town's population. Meet Richard Booth, the Oxford-educated madman who proved that sometimes the most ridiculous ideas are also the most brilliant. This is the story of Hay-on-Wye: the town that books built, the kingdom that never was but somehow still exists, and the beautiful audacity of believing that literature can literally save the world—one used paperback at a time.GET A BOOK ABOUT IT HERE: To support independent book shops use this link.Or to just use Amazon use this link.BECOME AN Elton Reads A Book A Week CONTRIBUTOR HERE:Elton Reads A Book A Week PatreonTips!SOCIAL MEDIA! Detroit's resurgence story is impossible to ignore. Following decades of economic decline, the city has seen major revitalization—most recently highlighted when the NFL Draft drew over 700,000 visitors downtown. The stakes are high: Detroit's growth depends not only on investments from billionaires, but on reconnecting with former residents whose personal and professional contributions can drive lasting change. Research on urban development shows that “brain gain” from returning diaspora communities can accelerate recovery and innovation. So how does Detroit harness the talent, capital, and passion of its global diaspora to fuel a sustainable comeback?Welcome to DisruptED. In the final episode of this two-part series, host Ron J Stefanski sits down with Mary Kramer, retired director of Crain Communications, to explore the impact of Detroit Homecoming—an annual event that reconnects Detroit expats with their hometown. They discuss inspiring personal stories, the role of grassroots initiatives, and the intersection of business, philanthropy, and civic leadership in the city's renewal.Key moments from the conversation:Heartwarming success stories, from Hall of Fame gymnast Wendy Hilliard returning to launch youth programs, to entrepreneurs opening businesses in Detroit after years abroad. How Detroit Homecoming creates lasting emotional connections that lead to investments, philanthropic projects, and even life changes—like families relocating to the city. The importance of balancing big-ticket donations with grassroots contributions that cultivate innovation and inclusivity.Mary Kramer is a veteran media executive with more than 30 years of leadership in business journalism and publishing at Crain Communications, where she served as editor and publisher of Crain's Detroit Business and later as group publisher for the company's city brands in Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, and New York. She spearheaded the creation of Detroit Homecoming in 2014, an initiative that has generated roughly $1 billion in outcomes by re-engaging successful Detroit “expats” as investors, philanthropists, and brand ambassadors. Beyond her journalism career, Kramer has led special projects, such as launching Crain Currency, and she continues to contribute to the city's cultural life as vice chair of Detroit Opera.

We are sure you know the story of Snow White. The fairest in the land, crazy step-mom, seven short kings and a prince who fell in love with a corpse. But you haven't heard Coco read you the Brother's Grimm version, and you don't want to miss it..We start with a brief history of the Snow White story, discussing several different versions from different countries, even an origin story (dubiously) rooted in truth! Then we dive right into the tale of a no-talent, inefficient evil queen he'll-bent on murdering a seven year old. Heartwarming..Follow us through the woods and over the seven mountains to the little cottage where the dwarves generously allow Snow White a home, in exchange for slave labor. Listen in dismay as the evil queen, whose only skill seems to be applying makeup, dupes this poor child (yeah, we think she's still seven) repeatedly, using the same line each time.Rejoice each time the dwarves save her, despair each time they fail to protect her, and listen to the end for the big, hot, dance finish!.Follow that up with a Happy Ending with Betsy… you know you want to.

Jen shares her deeply personal story of receiving a wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation and how that experience not only helped her cope during treatment but also inspired her path into medicine. Now, working at the very hospital where she was once treated, Jen sees firsthand how a single wish can uplift not just a child, but an entire family. We dive into: Jen's cancer diagnosis and the emotional toll it took on her and her family Her unforgettable wish to meet Disney animators—and why it mattered so much The Wish Impact Study and the real data showing how hope affects healing The misconception that wishes are just for terminally ill kids (they're not!)
