A new series with an old, continued favourite area of movies returning to MHS for the first time in a while as Jeannine and Morgan venture back into the world of Black Movies throughout June; specifically looking at Black Female Leads! They begin the series this week with the eccentric and surprisingly emotional drug-fuelled 1980s drug movie, FATAL BEAUTY (1987)! For our money, Whoopi Goldberg ranks as one of the greatest actresses of her generation. If you were born after a certain date, you might most know her as a host on The View, but she was breaking down walls and winning Oscars long before that. Her list of credits inspires awe. There's Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple, Ghost (she won the Oscar for that one), Sister Act, which was so good that it got a sequel, Jumping Jack Flash, and many more. Heck, she even made a more than credible action hero in the badass eighties flick Fatal Beauty. At the height of her fame, she made a risky move by going to TV and recurring on Star Trek: The Next Generation as Guinan, but she was a fan of the franchise and didn't care that she could get pigeonholed as a TV actress.Indeed, Whoopi was the best, and it's a shame that she's gotten fewer significant roles in movies in recent years, although she's reprising Guinan on Star Trek: Picard, and there are rumours of a Sister Act sequel happening on Disney Plus. Time will tell, but in the episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we celebrate a talent that's not one to shy away from controversy (a massive understatement if you watch The View) but remains an impeccable actress (even if she did do Theodore Rex);

In Blac Chyna news, we learn that Rob Kardashian doesn't want their daughter Dream to twerk. And in our Squibster of June Squibb news, we learn that June is BFF's with Lupito Nyong'o, and that June used to have a career as a female Fabio. Then, the guys walk down the aisle with Lifetime's Fatal Fiancé, a movie that may be the start of a new franchise (though is not, regrettably, part of a trilogy that also includes Fatal Attraction and the Whoopi Goldberg movie Fatal Beauty). Fatal Fiancé is packed with soap stars and insane amounts of exposition as well as the world's most clearly labeled bottle of chloroform ever. …it’s a gas, gas, gas. Ashlee breaks out the tissues and nostalgia for 1986's Jumpin’ Jack Flash while Carolyn adds even more context for the broader discussions about Whoopi’s career in the mid-1980’s. What backlash ensued? Can we still look back in fondness and enjoy it today? The answers may be as complicated as British intelligence spies, moles, and KGB meddling. Dive into Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies, and Bucks: An Interpretive History of Blacks in American Films by Donald Bogle Bogle talks about Whoopi's roles and how she doesn't necessarily represent the Black diaspora. That's okay with us because we saw ourselves in her and Black women are dynamic and unique, just like Whoopi.  Learn more about Whoopi’s career in Divas on Screen: Black Women in American Film by Mia Mask: Mask talks about how Whoopi Goldberg’s stardom is unconventional and to a degree, unprecedented because foundationally as a comedic actress and performer, she already defies convention of who is seen as funny and respected in the space, and doubled with her race and appearance. She defies "acceptable" femininity with her dark skin and natural hair (locs) which was not a everyday/common American style in the early-mid 1980’s. Consistently, Goldberg has played characters that challenge assumptions and, to an extent, pushed back on racial stereotypes. She’s also had to fight to be seen as desirable in films. A love scene was cut from the film, Fatal Beauty despite her protests. “Closer reading of her star vehicles demonstrates the way her characters—and the situations in which they are place—trouble supposedly stable gender categories, critique notions of white identity, question whiteness as a social formation, and identify white racism.” Carolyn on Twitter @vfdpixie Ashlee on Twitter @AshleeTakesNote Sound edits by Carolyn  Graphics by Ashlee   Intro/Outro Music: I Got This by David Renda (felisyanstudios.com)

Addicted to her sexual prowess and madly in love, Joste gave her homes, cars, cash, and a $350,000 engagement ring.  Their fifteen years of passion and excess ended the day Rhonda drove directly from a shooting range to the Austin home they once shared. After pumping ten bullets into him from a Glock 9mm, she stood over Joste’s blood-splattered body and shot him six more times—twice below the waist. According to Rhonda, Joste was violent, abusive, and had threatened her life. Here, for the first time, are Rhonda Glover’s shocking stories of drug-crazed devil worship and sexual perversity. But in a packed courtroom, prosecutors presented shocking evidence that beautiful Rhonda didn’t act in self-defense—it was just hot-blooded murder! FATAL BEAUTY-Burl Barer
