Ep. 70 - From Raleigh PD to True Crime Author: Cameron Santana on his law enforcement career and the Virginia Olson Cold Case. Cameron has 20 years in law enforcement. He started with Raleigh PD in 2005. In our conversation, we jump right in with his first call straight out of the academy – a violent murder scene. Cameron talks about what it's like hitting the streets with no real world LE experience, being surrounded by chaos and relying on the direction of his Field Training Officer. Then, within short two years, Cameron would go from having an FTO to being an FTO and later Taser Instructor. In all, he trained more than 30 officers.Cameron later joined Raleigh PD's Strike Team the goal of which was to aggressively address the city's problem areas through proactive policing. The unit's focus was on violent gang offenders, street level drug sales, and prostitution. The team also conducted surveillance during spikes in burglaries. After about 13 years on patrol, Cameron transitioned to School Resource Officer because the set schedule would allow him to spend more time with his family after his daughter was born with special needs. School Resource Officer was a role he never expected he would want, much less come to love. Throughout our conversation, Cameron shares funny, often wild stories of police work, as well as the painful calls that all of you respond to in this profession, calls that live with him to this day.Cameron has co-authored a true crime book with his brother Brian, an English professor. The book, “A Murder on Campus: The Professor, the Cop and North Carolina's Most Notorious Cold Case,” investigates the 1973 unsolved rape and murder of 19-year-old Virginia Olson, a student at University of North Carolina Asheville. It is the first book to thoroughly investigate her story and attempt to find answers to solve this now 52-year-old cold case. The book has led to Cameron's launching his own podcast “Santana True Crime” on the Failure to Stop network. As well as a podcast called “Free Daniel Holtzclaw” with Eric Tansey of Failure to Stop. Available on all podcast platforms. Links below.I want to thank Cameron for coming on the show, his commitment to law enforcement, and his mission to not only find justice for victims, but also to make sure the rest of us know the story of their lives beyond their incident. "You can't say the last evil person in this world was Hitler." Those were the words of Circuit Court Judge Timothy Kenny when he spoke of Ronald Lloyd Bailey, a Michigan serial killer serving a life sentence without parole.   During a sunny Labor Day weekend in 1985, thirteen-year-old Shawn Moore was kidnapped while riding his bike near his home in Brighton, Michigan. Still on edge from a series of unsolved murders dubbed the Oakland County Child Killings in the mid-seventies, a task force of up to seventy-five investigators worked day and night to find Shawn. In an almost unheard-of series of events, local, state, and federal law enforcement combined their resources and efforts to track down the killer. They knew the kidnapper could be anywhere, and there was an urgency to find Shawn Moore alive.  Depraved Obsession: The Gripping True Story of Law Enforcement's Hunt for a Sadistic Serial Killer launches on May 6. It is always a thrill to have Frank on the show, and once again we get great true crime insights from both Frank and Burl. who give us preview of their new true crime book coming out this year.****Best-selling author Frank C. Girardot has been called the "Demon dog of true crime" by none other than Black Dahlia author James Ellroy. Praise for his writing has come from authors as varied as Walter Kirn and Michael Fleeman. His books have ranged from "Name Dropper", a chronicle on the bizarre antics of a murdering imposter who called himself Clark Rockefeller to "Betrayal in Blue" a look at cocaine dealing cops in 1980s New York City, which was co-authored by Burl Barer and Ken Eurell, one of the actual cops.In all of his writing, Girardot's ability to interview complicated characters like drug kingpin Adam Diaz, German imposter Christian Gerhartsreiter and serial arsonist John Orr, add a depth to his story telling that is often lacking in police procedurals masking as true crime. In each of his books, Girardot has displayed a unique ability to locate long-hidden public records and distill narratives from complex court records that brings his stories to life. Girardot's career in journalism began as a copyboy with the now-defunct Los Angeles Herald Examiner. As a reporter he covered stories as fascinating as the O.J. Simpson murder trial and as complex as the mistaken gang execution of three trick-or-treaters on Halloween 1993 in the Los Angeles area.

We are excited to have James Renner as our special guest on True Crime Broads: James Renner is mostly known for his true-crime journalism. As a reporter for Cleveland Scene, he uncovered new clues and suspects in the cold-case murder of Amy Mihaljevic (http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/30/tech/crowdsourced-cold-cases-james-renner-amy-mihaljevic-feat/). His work led to the successful closure of the Tina Harmon case (http://www.indeonline.com/article/20081126/NEWS/311269903) in 2009. He spent months researching the Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus abductions when the girls were still missing and is haunted by the fact that he had Castro's name in his notes (http://www.cracked.com/personal-experiences-1614-i-hunt-serial-killers-6-insane-realities-my-life.html). His true crime writing has been featured in the Best American Crime Reporting anthology. His selection was the first true crime article to use a dream sequence as a narrative device. Renner has always been interested in filmmaking, as well. In 2004, Renner directed a short film based on the Stephen King story, All That You Love Will Be Carried Away. King sold him the rights for $1. The movie starred Joe Bob Briggs and the late-great Harvey Pekar. It premiered at the 2005 Montreal World Film Festival.Later that same year, Renner directed a documentary about the influence of J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye (https://jamesrenner.com/?page_id=399&=1). The adventure culminated in a short meeting between Renner and the reclusive author at his home in New Hampshire. In 2012, Renner's debut novel – The Man from Primrose Lane (https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/books/the-man-from-primrose-lane-by-james-renner/2012/03/06/gIQAf4bCLS_story.html)– was published by Sarah Crichton Books. Set in Northeast Ohio, The Man from Primrose Lane blends mystery with scifi in a very unique structure.  The story is currently being adapted for television.Renner's second novel, The Great Forgetting (http://www.fsgbookkeeping.com/the-sweet-spot/), is a “love letter to conspiracy thrillers.”A new work of nonfiction, True Crime Addict (https://jamesrenner.com/?p=701&=1), was published in May by Thomas Dunne Books. The New York Times Sunday Book Review  (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/31/books/review/true-crime-addict-james-renner-and-more.html)called it “shamelessly entertaining.”James Renner is also the founder of The Porchlight Project (https://porchlightonline.org/), a nonprofit that raises money for new DNA testing of cold cases in Ohio. In 2020, an arrest was made in their first case – the unsolved murder of Barbara Blatnik (https://www.beaconjournal.com/news/20200506/cleveland-man-arrested-in-1987-murder-of-teen-whose-body-was-found-near-blossom-music-center) – thanks to their funding of genetic genealogy. True Crime Author And Lawyer McCracken Poston Releases Zenith Man

Like a nonfiction John Grisham thriller with echoes of Rainman, Just Mercy, and a captivating smalltown Southern setting, this is the fascinating true story-sometimes humorous, sometimes heartbreaking-of an idealistic young lawyer determined to free an innocent neurodivergent man accused of murdering the wife no one knew he had. Was this small-town TV repair man "a harmless eccentric or a bizarre killer" (Atlanta Journal Constitution). For the first time, Alvin Ridley's own defense attorney reveals the inside story of his case and trial in an extraordinary tale of friendship and an idealistic young attorney's quest to clear his client's name-and, in the process, rebuild his own life. In October 1997, the town of Ringgold in northwest Georgia was shaken by reports of a murder in its midst. A dead woman was found in Alvin Ridley's house-and even more shockingly, she was the wife no one knew he had. McCracken Poston had been a state representative before he lost his bid for U.S. Congress and returned to his law career. Alvin Ridley was a local character who once sold and serviced Zenith televisions. Though reclusive and an outsider, the "Zenith Man," as Poston knew him, hardly seemed capable of murder. Alvin was a difficult client, storing evidence in a cockroach-infested suitcase, unwilling to reveal key facts to his defender. Gradually, Poston pieced together the full story behind Virginia and Alvin's curious marriage and her cause of death-which was completely overlooked by law enforcement. Calling on medical experts, testimony from Alvin himself, and a wealth of surprising evidence gleaned from Alvin's junk-strewn house, Poston presented a groundbreaking defense that allowed Alvin to return to his peculiar lifestyle, a free man. Years after his trial, Alvin was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a revelation that sheds light on much of his lifelong personal battle-and shows how easily those who don't fit societal norms can be castigated and misunderstood. Part true crime, part courtroom drama, and full of local color, Zenith Man is also the moving story of an unexpected friendship between two very different men that changed-and perhaps saved-the lives of both.

Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. It's often messy, frustrating, and overwhelming.  And most people will bow out before they “succeed.” Because they don't have the entrepreneurial grit and tenacity it takes to build a business that will grow and last.  It can NOT be done perfectly. And it will be messy.  Because no matter how much you pre-plan and prepare, there will be obstacles.     The product launch you spent 40 hours a week for 6 months preparing for fails.  Your computer melts down as you're backing up your files and you lose everything for your business.  You hedged everything on the loan you didn't get, and you can't pay rent.  How you handle the inevitable obstacles will make or break your business.   So what do you do?  Do you respond like a deer in headlights and shut down? Taking forever to decide what to do next. Because you worry that every decision might be the wrong choice.  Do you come up with solutions quickly, but can't decide which one is best? And even when you do decide you second guess whether it was the right choice.  Does it feel like nothing you do ever works? And it makes you question whether you should keep going.  Perhaps you melt down and get crazy emotional, taking days to process and get over it before you can even deal with it. Or maybe you're a super quick action taker who doesn't “think it through” which causes you to go down the wrong rabbit hole a lot. And you end up having to backtrack and clean up more messes.      The reality is, that most people don't deal with obstacles well. And for most people, that's fine. Because they can tailor their life to avoid most obstacles. But as an entrepreneur, you can't do that. They are inevitable.  And your ability to handle these obstacles in a constructive way will be a MAJOR factor in the growth of your business.  Because doing it wrong affects your business exponentially as it grows. So even if poorly dealing with obstacles is not having much of an effect now, it will in the future. Unless of course, you don't want to grow your business. (Which is totally okay, it's not for everyone.)   One of the reasons I love doing my podcast (Be the Wolf: be who you were born to be) is that I get to share stories and tips about overcoming obstacles. This week I talk with True Crime Author, Pepper Anne, who had to overcome unspeakable obstacles to finish her book The Notorious Texas Swindler. She is a true example of the entrepreneurial grit and tenacity it takes to bring your gifts to the world and succeed in business.   Connect to Genea: Free Gift: The 3 Secrets to Maximize Profit and Impact (that the business gurus won't tell you) : http://ideservethisgift.com/ Website: http://geneabarnes.com/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/genea-barnes/ Facebook business: https://www.facebook.com/geneabarneselevate/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/geneabarnes/  TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@geneabarnes YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/geneabarnes   Connect to Pepper Anne Website: https://www.pepperanneauthor.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PepperAnneGetsTheScoop Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/PepperAnneAuthor/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/pepper_author Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@pepperanneauthor  Bio:  Pepper Anne is a 7th generation Texan, where she and her family currently reside. True Crime Tuesday presents Silent Silhouette ... Who killed Deborah Sue with Journalist/Researcher/Author George Jared! Deborah Sue Williamson was a newly married young woman living in Lubbock Texas on Aug. 24, 1975. One night while her husband was away at work, she was brutally stabbed 17 times in the carport of their home. Many suspects were investigated, but no one was charged. The case went cold until the mid-1980s when Henry Lee Lucas, a man notorious for admitting to murders he didn't commit confessed to her murder. It was profiled in the Netflix doc series The Confession Killer. There was only one problem. He didn't kill her. Her mother and stepfather proved Lucas didn't end Debbie's life and the case went cold once more. True Crime Author and investigative journalist George Jared teamed with his friend and former Army counterintelligence officer and university professor Jennifer Bucholtz to study the case in-depth. The two became acquainted while trying to solve the unsolved murder of Rebekah Gould. In that case they were able to lure the man, now charged with the 22-year-old woman's slaying, onto a Facebook page. Their interactions with him prior to his arrest garnered national attention. Their goal was to do the same in this case. Silent Silhouette is an in-depth look into the work that was done, complete with full interviews of every key player in this real life tragedy. One thing became clear as the investigation unfolded. This case is solvable and it's only a matter of time before this killer is behind bars. George Jared joins TCT today to talk about the particulars of the case and about the crowdsource movement to find the killer after all these years.
