Cox recounted how, since his release, he has reinvented himself as a true-crime author and the host of the popular YouTube show Inside True Crime, where he interviews law enforcement and former criminals, occasionally joking that a guest turns out to be less former than advertised, for an audience of more than a million subscribers. He explained that he began writing behind bars, penning memoirs of fellow inmates, among them Efraim Diveroli, whom he was incarcerated alongside, and clarified a common mix-up: he did not write War Dogs, the film that drew from a Rolling Stone article by Guy Lawson, with Jonah Hill playing Diveroli. His own book, Shark in the Housing Pool, has been optioned for the screen several times over roughly seven years without yet becoming a movie, a grind Cox takes in stride, noting that only a handful of optioned projects ever get made and that he is happy with where things stand. He offered a candid critique of the true-crime convention circuit for sidelining actual reformed offenders while welcoming him only as a journalist, and, drawing on the long odds he has watched other authors face, cautioned anyone banking on a single Hollywood deal to build something else in the meantime. Now channeling that same hustle into growing his shows across new platforms, he encouraged listeners to check out Inside True Crime.The hour closes with a Jesus and Ugly Jody simulcast, hosted with Sherrie, where recurring guest Jody Corbett led a reflection on blessings. Corbett walked through several kinds, material provision, relationships, and health, and pointed especially to what he called unrealized blessings, the disappointments that only reveal themselves as gifts in hindsight, a point Neil and Sherrie echoed with their own stories of doors that closed before better ones opened. He opened by asking simply what a blessing is, and pressed on where blessings come from. Anchoring the talk in Jeremiah 29:11, he noted that God's plans are meant not only to prosper but to protect, and reminded listeners that even everyday gifts like a healthy body, rest, and the breath of each morning are easy to overlook. He then turned to the temptation of Jesus in Matthew 4 to argue that not everything that looks like a blessing is one, since some are distractions meant to pull us off course, and that our free will shapes which doors we let God open. Ep. 70 - From Raleigh PD to True Crime Author: Cameron Santana on his law enforcement career and the Virginia Olson Cold Case. Cameron has 20 years in law enforcement. He started with Raleigh PD in 2005. In our conversation, we jump right in with his first call straight out of the academy – a violent murder scene. Cameron talks about what it's like hitting the streets with no real world LE experience, being surrounded by chaos and relying on the direction of his Field Training Officer. Then, within short two years, Cameron would go from having an FTO to being an FTO and later Taser Instructor. In all, he trained more than 30 officers.Cameron later joined Raleigh PD's Strike Team the goal of which was to aggressively address the city's problem areas through proactive policing. The unit's focus was on violent gang offenders, street level drug sales, and prostitution. The team also conducted surveillance during spikes in burglaries. After about 13 years on patrol, Cameron transitioned to School Resource Officer because the set schedule would allow him to spend more time with his family after his daughter was born with special needs. School Resource Officer was a role he never expected he would want, much less come to love. Throughout our conversation, Cameron shares funny, often wild stories of police work, as well as the painful calls that all of you respond to in this profession, calls that live with him to this day.Cameron has co-authored a true crime book with his brother Brian, an English professor. The book, “A Murder on Campus: The Professor, the Cop and North Carolina's Most Notorious Cold Case,” investigates the 1973 unsolved rape and murder of 19-year-old Virginia Olson, a student at University of North Carolina Asheville. It is the first book to thoroughly investigate her story and attempt to find answers to solve this now 52-year-old cold case. In the winter of 1999 in Detroit, Michigan, sex worker Monica Johnson entered a Jeep Wrangler with the licence plate 'Baby Doll' with a client. That client, John Eric Armstrong, brutally murdered her and placed her body face down on the sidewalk, before returning home to his wife and young son. Monica was one of several women he killed between 1992 to 1999 before the police finally closed in. Journalist and author B.R. As a reporter for Cleveland Scene, he uncovered new clues and suspects in the cold-case murder of Amy Mihaljevic (⁠http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/30/tech/crowdsourced-cold-cases-james-renner-amy-mihaljevic-feat/⁠). His work led to the successful closure of the Tina Harmon case (⁠http://www.indeonline.com/article/20081126/NEWS/311269903⁠) in 2009. His true crime writing has been featured in the Best American Crime Reporting anthology. His selection was the first true crime article to use a dream sequence as a narrative device. Sandra Bridewell first husband was found shot to death in their Dallas home in 1975. Death ruled a suicide. Appeals exhausted, Pamela Smart files a petition to compel the governor and Executive Council to reconsider giving her a commutation hearing. This too,  fails. The  state Supreme Court unanimously dismissed the petition for lack of jurisdiction. True Crime Tuesday presents Silent Silhouette ... Who killed Deborah Sue with Journalist/Researcher/Author George Jared! Deborah Sue Williamson was a newly married young woman living in Lubbock Texas on Aug. 24, 1975. One night while her husband was away at work, she was brutally stabbed 17 times in the carport of their home. Many suspects were investigated, but no one was charged. The case went cold until the mid-1980s when Henry Lee Lucas, a man notorious for admitting to murders he didn't commit confessed to her murder. It was profiled in the Netflix doc series The Confession Killer. There was only one problem. He didn't kill her. Her mother and stepfather proved Lucas didn't end Debbie's life and the case went cold once more. True Crime Author and investigative journalist George Jared teamed with his friend and former Army counterintelligence officer and university professor Jennifer Bucholtz to study the case in-depth. The two became acquainted while trying to solve the unsolved murder of Rebekah Gould. In that case they were able to lure the man, now charged with the 22-year-old woman's slaying, onto a Facebook page. Their interactions with him prior to his arrest garnered national attention. The verdict is in the murder of 21-year-old Regan Simmons Hancock, found by her mother lying face down in her bloody living room.   Hancock nearly 8 months pregnant with her second child, has a large slice across her stomach and the baby is gone.  On a nearby roadway, a Texas State Trooper pulls over a car for speeding, and inside he finds Taylor Parker giving CPR to a newborn. Parker tells the trooper that she gave birth on the side of the road, but the baby isn't breathing. Parker and the newborn are rushed to a hospital, where the baby died. Theresa Fillingim was almost 17 years old when she disappeared. She was living with her sister in Florida, trying to find a job.  Fillingim leaves for an interview and is never seen again. Now, the remains of the Florida teen found 41 years ago, buried on the property of a serial killer, have been positively identified. Three other bodies were also found.  Police said the teen's remains were found on property owned by Billy Mansfield Jr.,  responsible for murdering at least five women in California and Florida. In 1982, Mansfield Jr. was sentenced to life in a California prison, where he remains today. With the help of the University of North Texas and the Virginia-based DNA company, Parabon Nano Labs, officials were able to positively identify Fillinghim through a DNA match with her sister.
