The Gilded Gentleman
Rediscovering Edith Wharton's First Book

The Gilded Gentleman

Many fans of Edith Wharton's great novels "The Age of Innocence" and "The House of Mirth" may not realize that her very first published book was not a work of fiction at all. In 1897, in collaboration with architect and interior designer Ogden Codman Jr, Wharton published "The Decoration of Houses", at the time, a groundbreaking work on the philosophy of interior design calling for a return to the classic European principles of balance, symmetry and proportion. In fact when she built her own great country home The Mount in Lenox, Massachusetts in 1902, she incorporated many of the French, Italian and British principles she lays out in the book.In this episode, returning guest Dr. Emily Orlando, noted Wharton scholar and author, helps us understand just what the publication of this first book meant to Wharton and the career that was to come. Furthermore, Dr. Orlando addresses the overriding theme of Wharton's own search for home and place that reoccurs regularly in her stories and novels.  We can then understand not only Edith Wharton's concepts for classic architectural design but at least for her - what makes a house a home.Dr. Emily Orlando is the editor of a recently published new annotated edition of "The Decoration of Houses" available wherever books are sold. This episode was produced and edited by Kieran Gannon  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. If you're a nonfiction author — especially a coach, consultant, speaker, or thought leader — you've probably wrestled with the question:"Should you focus on building your author brand first, or writing the book first?"In this episode of Your Path to Book Publishing, we slow this question down and look at what actually keeps capable authors stuck — and why the answer isn't as simple as choosing one over the other. You'll learn why waiting for clarity often creates more friction than progress, how author voice and positioning are shaped through action, and why the most successful nonfiction authors allow their book and brand to develop together over time. This episode reframes the question entirely and offers a practical way to move forward without feeling overwhelmed, scattered, or stuck in planning mode.In this episode, you'll discover:Why “brand vs. book” is often the wrong question to askWhat truly prevents authors from getting startedHow author voice and positioning are developed through use, not theoryWhy focusing on one platform early can accelerate clarityA simple way to build momentum in both your book and your brand at the same timeIf you've been waiting to feel ready before starting your book or building your platform, this episode will help you rethink what readiness actually looks like.Learn more about Your Path to Book Publishing by visiting Juxtabook.com and discover if traditional publishing, self-publishing, or hybrid publishing is right for you. But more than that, I offer a director's cut of the book itself - reading passages aloud, reflecting on what surprised me as I wrote it, and unpacking the emotional and psychological process behind writing about the shadow being an act of personal shadow work.Together, we explore:What it really feels like to be seen, exposed, and publishedThe existential terror of transparencyHow magical tools like crystals became sacred support in therapyThe Queen of Swords as persona and protector (hello, favorite archetype)A real-life case study of shadow integration in therapyWhat Sartre, Jung, Brene Brown, and tarot have in commonAnd yes, I do a bit of spontaneous exposure therapy by reading straight from the physical book instead of my digital copy (gulp). This week on Inspire + Move, I'm sitting down with the incredibly talented Carly Ottaway, the author of COMING HOME, creator of The Mirror Effect, and founder of the award-winning boutique marketing agency Web of Words. Carly opens up about the soul-led process of writing her first book, how storytelling has shaped every chapter of her life, and what it really looks like to share your truth from the heart. This is one of those conversations that will have you reflecting deeply on your own story, creativity, and the power of slowing down to truly hear what your life is telling you.Tune in to hear more about: • How Carly's lifelong love of storytelling evolved into building a business and now a published book. • The transformation that happens when you write from a place of truth, starting with letters to your younger self. • Creative process and rituals: how voice notes, walks, and journal entries became full chapters. • Navigating motherhood, entrepreneurship, and authorship all at once and learning to slow down.• Why paying attention to the signs matters.Whether you're dreaming of writing a book, stepping into a new season of creativity, or just need the reminder that your story matters, I'd love to know what you took away from this episode!
