Send us a Text Message. In this episode, Alex and Erik visit the Gladers and discuss the prison of sorts that they find themselves in. Hideous creatures roam the mysterious maze at night, Gladers turn on each other in times of peril, and everything the Gladers have known is changing fast. Will the mystery of the maze be solved? Will you survive the maze?
This week on YA, We Read It! Laura and Meggie are joined by Arthur Howell (creator of 2 Cents Critic blog & podcast) for a lovely stroll into the fifth Maze Runner book. Following the story of how the maze got made, we focus on Thomas, our protagonist once again, and his life under Wicked's roof from early childhood to his teens. Teresa and him become fast friends and meet the other Gladers over the years ultimately until the maze is completed and they fully realize how bad Wicked actually is. The Fever Code works hard to answer all the questions from the original trilogy (yet arguably leaves us with more questions, but hey! who's counting?) as it flashes through the years up until Thomas' first day in the maze.
Aw babe, is it hot in here or did you just get dropped off in a deserted wasteland that's 1000 degrees? For our surviving Gladers, it's the latter. After their staged rescue from the Maze, we discover that the boys are a part of a much bigger test to find a cure for a horrible disease that's destroying humanity. The next trial for them is for them to march 100 miles through the Scorch and make it to the "safe haven," which proves to have many more obstacles than they ever could have imagined: we're talking Cranks, disastrous lightning storms, and more! Tune in as Meggie and Laura dissect it all.
In this episode, Megan reads about her relationships with various Gravity Falls characters, Phil Coulson's secret connection to the Pines twins, and Romeo and Juliet's beef with Bill Cypher. Emily reads about the Gladers' tastes in music, and the similarities between The Maze Runner and BTS' Wings music video (and more!) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sortbybestmatch/support
The Gladers get kicked into high gear as the end of their maze trial looms. The maze enters its ending phase and the violence, horror, and gore are elevated to a new level. We also get to see the beginning of Thomas and Teresa's friendship as she wakes up from her coma. The ending leaves us on the edge of our seats and begging to dive into the next book of the series. Which of the hosts was right in their prediction as to how to escape the maze, because one of us got pretty close! Next week we will be reading chapters 1-31 of book 2 in the series, The Scorch Trials. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/throwback-paperback/support

Brenna and Joe have patched up their differences and just in time, because they find themselves locked up with the Gladers, a bunch of annoying, mediocre (mostly) white boys from James Dashner's 2009 dystopian YA, The Maze Runner and Wes Ball's 2014 film adaptation, starring Teen Wolf break-out Dylan O'Brien. Brenna is firmly displaced with both texts unwillingness to explain the need for an all-male society and for their poorly reductive use of women. Joe is more willing to embrace the action sequences of the film, but finds the endless unanswered questions of the book and its abrupt cliffhanger a lazy attempt to goose sales. Plus: both are angered at the crappy allusions to both Lord of the Flies and, more significantly, Watership Down which is one of Brenna and Joe's favourite YA texts and not one to be messed around with. In Homework: Brenna eulogizes the end of The Amazing Squirrel-Girl comic, but offers hope for a new writer of Ms Marvel (prompting a general discussion of Disney & corporate conglomeracy). Joe, meanwhile, gushes about Kai Cheng Thom's Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl’s Confabulous Memoir and catches up on reader mail, one of which prompts an apology and calls for education.
