The Cinema College Custodians take over for the Film School Janitors once again, and this time they are tackling a film with a lot of baggage - and we're not talking baggage you claim at the airport! LOVE ACTUALLY arrived at the baggage claim, er, at the theaters in 2003, and it's had a storied history of re-evaluations since then, so now it's the Custodians turn! Unwrap this Joni Mitchell CD and maybe it's an ugly necklace!
THE DEVIL WITHIN — CHRISTMAS SPECIAL Episode Two: Merry Christmas, You're Barely Holding It Together Christmas movies aren't comforting because they're gentle. They're comforting because they tell the truth—quietly, sideways, and usually with jokes.
On this episode of “Tommy Talk,” Tommy is joined by actress Jennifer Love Hewitt to debate all things holidays and New Year’s. Known as “The Holiday Junkie,” Jennifer is the perfect guest to weigh in on some seriously heated topics like: Should Christmas decorations stay up past New Year’s? The Holiday vs. Love Actually? Are New Year’s resolutions worth it? Multicolor lights or white lights? Should we really keep sending family photos every Christmas? It’s the perfect episode to wrap up the holiday season, all while getting a glimpse into our very fun and unhinged friendship.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
After more than 20 years since the film was released in theaters, LOVE ACTUALLY (2003) remains one of the most beloved Christmas movies out there. Some may consider the film at the top of the holiday movie list, while others have noted it did not age well. With a stellar cast line-up and interconnected storylines, LOVE ACTUALLY set the bar for early 2000's holiday rom-coms with catchy one-liners and festive cliches.

Cathy and Todd discuss Love Actually as part of their “Christmas movies that might not actually be Christmas movies” month. Released in November 2003 and written and directed by Richard Curtis, the film uses its London-at-Christmas setting, stacked ensemble cast, and interwoven stories of romantic, familial, awkward, and heartbreaking love to reflect a long-held worldview: messy humans and basic decency still matter. Cathy and Todd go through their categories, debate the storylines, and unpack why its message that “love is all around” became an annual ritual for so many—and what lands differently when we watch it now.. #203: Not every December needs tinsel-level perfection. We open the gift box on real holiday life—the joy, the mess, and the logistics no one puts on a card—and invite you to build a season that actually fits. With Ivy at the mic, we swap polite scripts for honest takes on gift pressure, Santa fairness for kids, and the surprising relief of doing less but doing it well.We dig into the stress cycle of adult gift exchanges and share a saner alternative: fewer, better presents or one intentional standout that shows you paid attention all year. Then we tackle the Santa dilemma—how to keep the magic when classmates compare “from Santa” gifts. Our fix is simple and kind: let big-ticket items come from parents, and keep Santa for small, universal surprises. From pajamas versus full outfits to real tree versus fake tree, we keep choices judgment-free and rooted in what your budget, schedule, and bandwidth can handle.Family dynamics get the same practical treatment. If Christmas at your house tends to ignite overcooked expectations, try time-boxed visits, arrive-early/leave-early plans, or a light ritual like morning mimosas to set a calmer tone. We talk Elf on the Shelf burnout, wrapping waste, and how to redesign traditions when you're postpartum, stretched thin, or just not in the mood for extra chores. And because holidays should still be fun, we trade movie hot takes (Elf, Love Actually, Die Hard) and nominate a few songs for retirement. The throughline is agency: you can love the season, skip the performance, and still make room for wonder. If the holidays feel more like logistics than magic, you're not broken—you're busy and human. Use this conversation to set kinder boundaries, simplify your list, and protect the parts of December that really matter. If this resonated, tap follow, share with a friend who needs permission to do less, and leave a quick review to help others find the show. You can now send us a text to ask a question or review the show. Julefilmen er en genre for sig, og hver eneste november dukker de op på stort set alle streamingtjenester. Film med titler som ’Holidate’, ’A Christmas Prince’ , ’Christmas without You’, ’Candy Coated Christmas’, ’Snowmance’, ’A Christmas Match’, ’A Christmas Kiss’, ’Naughty and Nice’ og ’A Castle for Christmas’. It's another ‘Cultural Artefact' episode and in this one I'm ranting about Love Actually. It's on ITV X this Christmas (annoyingly with ads) so this makes the Watchalong episode I did last year more relevant, which you can find here at the Patreon https://www.patreon.com/posts/118365605 For this I am doing a reading from the article at BISH I did about it, a Sex and Relationships Education Guide to Love Actually https://www.bishuk.com/your-call/a-sex-and-relationships-education-guide-to-love-actually/ which is actually really good. I use this as a jumping off point for my reading of the film and having a discussion about the ontology of love in Richard Curtis's world compared with mine. I also yell and make snide and funny remarks about this bloody awful film. Enjoy! Here's that blog about Consensual Christmas https://www.bishuk.com/relationships/consensual-festivities/

Just four days before Christmas, the holiday that somehow balances goodwill and rampant consumerism with alarming confidence, Filmjitsu unwraps its latest seasonal offering: a full review of Love Actually. Richard Curtis's 2003 all-star rom-com is a film that lives in two completely different cultural realities at once: perpetually lodged near the top of “Best Christmas Movies Ever” lists, while also earning a permanent spot on more than a few “Worst Movies of All Time” rankings. And in true Filmjitsu fashion, the co-hosts are split right down the middle: one embracing the movie's emotional generosity, the other recoiling from its aggressively cozy chaos. After wrestling with the film's tonal whiplash, the guys count down their Bottom Five Subplots, side stories that feel less “interwoven tapestry” and more “air-dropped from completely different movies,” complete with crowbarred romances, third-act hijacks, and baffling detours involving everything from wolves to heroin. 2025 wraps with a final Dueling Double Bills match, and this time it's so high stakes that listener involvement may be unavoidable. It's a merry-and-bright holiday special done the Filmjitsu way, which means no one gets what they want… except listeners who had cinematic suffering at the top of their Christmas lists!
Hey! Part III of our Christmas Series looks at another classic from the early 2000s: Love Actually. It's from the writer/director of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, and Bridget Jones, so you kinda know what to expect. It's somehow narratively ambitious and cliched. Sean and I have diverging opinions. To pair, we enjoy some delicious Spanish Albariño.
In the weeks leading up to Christmas, several Londoners find love. Special guests Carly Slater and Courtney Noah join us to chat about a company with no HR department, hating Uncle Jamie, and Alan getting into marital trouble. I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes as we see if Love Actually stands the Test of Time.
It's beginning to taste a lot like Christmas. For this year's festive special, Nick and Angela are joined around the tree by Keira Knightley for a turkey feast and plenty of bubbles. Keira Knightley is an English actress who lives in North London with her two daughters and husband, James Righton. She is known for an array of brilliant roles in films such as Pride & Prejudice, The Imitation Game, Atonement and the TV series Black Doves. And, at this time of year, it would be remiss not to mention her role in the Christmas staple Love Actually, a film she's watched just once. She joins us following her latest lead role... opposite Joe Wilkinson in the Waitrose Christmas advert. We've heard his side of the story, but how does Keira reflect on the day they filmed ‘the big kiss'? Angela delivers dish after dish in this episode, with a fennel & citrus roast turkey as the table's centrepiece. It's served with her own (and famous) turkey gravy, roast potatoes with rosemary salt, stir fried sprouts with chestnuts and pancetta and a roast parsnip & grape salad with hazelnuts, chicory and parmesan dressing, which might just steal the show. Glasses are filled with No.1 Brut Special Reserve Vintage Champagne on arrival and the meal is paired by the Waitrose wine experts with a glass of De Loach OFS California Chardonnay. Enjoy! And let us know if you try and recreate any of the dishes at home. Merry Christmas and happy holidays from Nick, Angela and all the Dish team! We're wishing stoners young and old out there a joyous Season's Greetings with our BONKERS HOLIDAZE SPECIAL. Philena still hasn't seen WICKED: FOR GOOD but we got more than enough witches and weirdness for her with THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ from 1910, a silent wonder which condenses Dorothy's entire journey into just 13 baffling minutes! What this early (but not first) version of THE WIZARD OF OZ lacks in coherence, it more than makes up for with stoniness. Glinda turns Toto into a strange dog-beast, and the flying monkeys are replaced with a bat-winged frog nightmare! We not only tell you what to smoke with this one but also what to put on your playlist while you enjoy the confusion. THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ is public domain so it's streaming on YouTube, Archive and even TikTok! And speaking of barely coherent, our main feature is SANTA CLAUS, a brain-melting oddity from Mexico in 1959 where Santa Claus and Merlin must stop a pantaloons-clad Devil from wrecking Christmas. If you put this fantasia on at your family holiday gathering instead of LOVE ACTUALLY or whatever the normies watch this time of year, grandma will feel like she's stoned even if she doesn't have a medical marijuana prescription. This psychiatric experiment was directed by René Cardona, who later gave us such gruesome classics as NIGHT OF THE BLOODY APES (1969) and the cannibalism epic SURVIVE! (1976). Another public domain gem, so it's streaming everywhere but the print that's on Tubi is the best. We suggest watching with a crowd, but if the male loneliness epidemic has you down, here's the MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 episode that Cory watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTWs3zvz1z4 We also talk about the Netflix merger with Warner Bros (but recorded it before the Ellisons got involved), the short-lived CASABLANCA TV series from the 80s, Greg watching BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (1980) on his new mammoth 4K TV and ZOOTOPIA 2. Happy New Year's everybody and see you back in February 2026! At Christmas, you tell the truth... And the truth is, we're covering "Love Actually" this week in the first episode of the holiday season. This movie of intertwined character pieces is full of dated takes on dating in the early-2000s UK, but we're going to zero in on one very important cover song that ties all the stories together: Billy Mack's gloriously cynical Christmas cover of The Troggs' “Love Is All Around.” We'll unwrap several other versions of the song as well as take a listen to Bill Nighy's surprisingly extensive singing résumé!
This week on The Way They Were, we do the unthinkable: we go back to Love Actually. Gráinne and Chantal rank the couples from least offensive to “maybe we should call the police”, asking the big questions Richard Curtis never did. Who do we hate the most? Are half these characters quietly unhinged? What exactly is going on with Keira Knightley's extremely youthful bride? And is the secretary secretly a feminist icon? (No.)Along the way we interrogate Christmas number ones, language barriers, workplace power dynamics, and why we will always, always cry during that Emma Thompson scene. The full episode is available now on our Patreon: patreon.com/TheWayTheyWere You can also access our exclusive bonus episodes every other week and take part in The Gossip our exclusive Patreon group chat! Why isn't this film called Love Sleeping? Or Love You Were Sleeping? Or Actually, Love, Were You Sleeping? Or Do You Actually Love Sleeping? Or some other combination of the films Love Actually and WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING!? Love Hard Year: 2021 Written by: Daniel Mackey and Rebecca Ewing Directed by: Hernán Jiménez Stars: Nina Dobrev, Jimmy O. Yang, Darren Barnet Show notes: This film wants to exist at the place where Love Actually meets Die Hard but the story of a woman who falls for a guy she knows nothing about beyond how he looks makes us think of a different film entirely. There is some good stuff here, some less good stuff and one or two elephants in the room - the biggest and noisiest elephant being: why does this film reference While You Were Sleeping so much and NEVER ONCE ACKNOWLEDGE THE FACT??? If you would like to skip the plot summary for this month's film you can spool forward about eleven minutes into the episode. In this episode we mention the films: To All The Boys I've Loved Before* (2018) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3846674/) Always Be My Maybe* (2019) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7374948/) Love Actually (2003) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314331/) Die Hard (1998) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095016/) While You Were Sleeping* (1995) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114924/) Home Alone (1990) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099785/) Single All The Way* (2021) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14315756/) And the TV series: Catfish: The TV Show (2012- ) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2498968/) *Films marked with an asterisk have previously been featured on the podcast. TALK TO ME, TEXT ITA glowing red “jellyfish” above a thunderstorm looks like sci‑fi until you hear the science. We start with a simple birthday fitness win—standing up from the floor without using hands—and follow that thread of intentional choices into the sky, where NASA explains sprites: rare, vermilion flashes that bloom 50 miles up and vanish in milliseconds. The images echo Stranger Things, but the truth is better than fiction—a peek at the upper atmosphere's hidden electrical theater and how storms can spark beauty we rarely see. From awe to impulse, we pivot into a candid look at TikTok Shop and the way shopping now lives inside the same stream as entertainment. Ten billion dollars of U.S. spend this year hints at a bigger shift: when video, social proof, and one-tap checkout erase the pause between wanting and buying. We unpack FOMO across generations, why buy-now-pay-later stretches small choices into long-term debt, and how to rebuild healthy friction with simple guardrails—separating watch from buy, adding a 24-hour list, and removing autofill to invite reflection back into the process. We wrap with a lighter tradition that still carries weight: favorite Christmas movies. Miracle on 34th Street, Love Actually, The Holiday—stories that help us measure what matters and remind us that belief, community, and restraint can coexist. Come for the strange red lightning and stay for the practical toolkit against the scroll-to-cart spiral. If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who loves space or struggles with impulse buys, and drop a review with your top holiday film—we're reading every pick.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!Start for FREE Thanks for listening! “Christmas Movies with Shaun”It's Christmas time. Why not invite Shaun to a conversation about something we both like. Christmas movies. We randomly found a list of the top 20 of all time and went from there. Some on the list were obvious, It's a Wonderful Life, Love Actually, A Muppet Christmas Carol, and other more recent ones didn't make the cut like, The Family Stone and The Holiday. There were the earlier ones which I look on fondly, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas. Not so much for Shaun. His nostalgia is for when he was growing up. Makes sense. It's like a Venn diagram. His, mine, and the ones we both like in the middle like Daddy's Home 2. Then there is the newest contender, Spirited. It's a musical with Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds. My bar for this was so low it was on the ground. Not sure why, no offense to either actor. Maybe it was it being yet another Christmas Carol adaptation. Turns out it was better than I expected and I really did enjoy it. Shaun hasn't seen it yet but he's added it to the list of the ones he wants to watch. And I said I'd check out the sequel to A Christmas Story. Who knows, I may add another to my annual viewing list. We have star of stage and screen, acting legend and national treasure Bill Nighy joining us on the podcast this week! Fresh from creating his brand new podcast ‘ill advised by Bill Nighy' - where he is an agony uncle - we sat down with Bill for lunch. Mum even made his favourite dish - pasta puttanesca. We found out that Bill was a Mod in his youth, how he feels about the success of Love Actually, the time he scammed tourists on the streets of Paris, why he prefers to eat meals alone and how he must add as much spice as possible to every meal he eats! What a total delight to have a meal with Bill, we could have chatted for hours and hours. Bill's fabulous podcast ‘ill advised by Bill Nighy' is available to listen to everywhere now.
