Dafür wissen wir, dass Takashi Yamazaki einen neuen GODZILLA-Film drehen wird, worüber sich dann doch nicht nur Daniel freut. Und es wird noch über ein paar Ankündigungen gequatscht. Zum Besipiel die 3 LEGO-Projekte, der GAME OF THRONES-Streifen, diese noch seltsam wirkende Produktion zu MARLON BRANDO oder die wie immer noch sehr unbekannte Produktion von CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, über die jetzt gerade das Gerücht kursiert, eine Art Neuauflage von DAS FLIEGENDE AUGE zu werden. Natürlich per IMAX gefilmt. Und natürlich wird auch noch über das geredet, was die Drei zuletzt gesehen haben. Infolgessen geht es um TRAINING DAY, die One-Shot-Apokalypse MADS und diesen hinreißenden Liebesbrief namens MUSIC BY JOHN WILLIAMS über einen unserer Alltime-Lieblingskomponisten. This week, we don't step behind the mic to be an audio driver... we do it because we're driven, as we go under the hood with the Wachowski sisters' much-maligned avant garde anticapitalist art film (for kids!), the 2008 anime adaptation Speed Racer, written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, and starring Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, Roger Allam, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benno Fürmann and Richard Roundtree. Turned loose on kid-friendly fare after R-rated successes, the Wachowskis served up a visionary piece of art about what it means to be an artist, and the struggle to create under capitalism. A box office flop upon its release, it's gained a cult following in the years since, and count Justin as a Day 1 believer as he saw it twice in IMAX and all of its technicolor splendor has likely been imprinted on his eyelids ever since. It's a contentious pick to close out Masterpiece Month, a nomination for canon consideration so audacious that it just may test the limits of the very friendship undergirding this podcast. But fret not! Beyond hearing a nerdy boy yap about his nerdy interest for an impossibly long time, we also mark the midway point of the year by revealing our Top 5 films of 2024 thus far. Alita: Battle Angel, based on a popular Manga series, is a cyberpunk action film from Robert Rodriguez. Full of CGI and over the top fisticuffs, Alita: Battle Angel is quite often visually dazzling. It truly feels like an anime come to life. Where it fails is its storytelling. The titular Alita is not a particularly compelling character, and her romance with Hugo is even less interesting. Such a shortcoming generally doesn't matter all that much in an effects heavy movie, but Alita: Battle Angel leans into their budding romance. No amount of script doctoring could salvage their lack of chemistry. That aside, this film garnered a legion of online hardcore fans. Though it may not be as awesome as they think, it is still worth watching for those unfamiliar with its inspiration, especially if you enjoy science fiction and rollerblading. GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra is a somewhat successful live-action adaptation of the beloved GI Joe cartoon and toy line. It's a big, loud, dumb, and, at times, very fun action film. Most of the adjectives above will come as no surprise for fans of Stephen Sommers–he of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns fame. The DNA of what made those films such enjoyable adventure romps is here. Unfortunately, so is his penchant to go too far over the top. *Cough* Van Helsing. What Sommers gets wrong in this, he basically butchers. Eschewing common series lore in favor Hollywood tropes, GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra loses some of the magic from the property, turning off longtime fans and general audiences in the process. Despite there being internet murmurs that this movie, and Sommers' career prospects, deserved better, this one underperformed at the time of its release. It grossed just $302.5 million on a budget of $175. Critics also sent it the Slaughter House. It sits at 33% on Rotten Tomatoes with 169 reviews. But, hey, there is a good time to be had here, as long as you don't think too hard about it.
