Despite achieving what many spiritual seekers only dream of— intense renunciation, self control and mystic abilities—some yogi's in the still suffer from fear and emptiness. In this eye-opening episode, Kaustubha and guest co-host Kishori Gopi explore the downfalls of two great mystic yogis and the deeper message their stories carry: that real transformation lies not in knowledge or austerity, but from the purity of one's heart. Through the stories of Durvāsā, Saubhari, and the unwavering devotion of Ambarīṣa, we uncover how even the most exalted yogic accomplishments are hollow without love, humility, and inner simplicity. Key Highlights: • Why mystic power can increase pride—and suffering • How Ambarīṣa's humility outshines a yogi's austerity • “Simplicity seeks God, purity enjoys Him” — the Thomas à Kempis quote unpacked • A Bhāgavatam verse revealing that even Lord Vishnu doesn't enjoy His own opulence without the love of the devotees Tune in to this illuminating episode to understand what truly moves the heart of God—and why it has little to do with how “spiritually accomplished” we appear.

Today is a special day for Walking with Purpose. It's the Feast Day of Saint Therese of Lisieux, our patron saint! And at WWP, we are all about getting women into Scripture so they can encounter Christ personally and apply it to their everyday lives. This is why St. Therese is our perfect guide: she spent countless hours studying Scripture and sharing a simple way for us to experience God's Word that is personal and transforming. Today on the podcast, Laura Phelps honors the Little Flower as she shares three not-so-typical reasons why she loves Saint Therese and calls her a friend. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. 2 Corinthians 12:9–11: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am weak, then I am strong. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Proverbs 9:4: Whosoever is a little one, let him come to me. (Douay-Rheims) Matthew 11:28–30: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Jeremiah 17:7: Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. Joshua 1:9: Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Psalm 116:6: The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. What character trait do you believe disqualifies you from becoming a great saint? Does the idea of being little and depending on God frighten you? What staircase are you trying to climb alone? Do you write letters? Maybe today is a good day to start. Show mentions. Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ Pope Pius VII, “She rediscovered the Gospel itself, the very heart of the Gospel.” St. Therese of Lisieux, The Story of a Soul Michael E. Wie miteinander reden in aufgeheizten und politisch polarisierten Zeiten – in der Familie, am Arbeitsplatz, im Netz? These excerpts for meditation/contemplation have been taken from Madame Guyon's text, 'A Short and Easy Method of Prayer'. Published by the Christian Classics Ethereal Library. Jeanne-Marie Bouvier de la Motte-Guyon (Commonly known as Madame Guyon - 13 April 1648 – 9 June 1717) is Christianity's best-known and most influential woman in church history. She was a celebrated French Mystic, and one of the greatest Christian leaders of all time. She was accused of advocating Quietism, which was considered heretical by the Roman Catholic Church. Madame Guyon was imprisoned from 1695 to 1703 after publishing the book A Short and Very Easy Method of Prayer. The foundation of her Quietism was laid in her study of St. Francis de Sales, Madame de Chantal, and Thomas a Kempis. At age 16, she married Jacques Guyon, a wealthy man of weak health, 22 years her senior. Her public career as an evangelist of Quietism began soon after her widowhood.
Join us for episode 17 in our eight-week series, Be Strong: The Armor of God. Lisa and Laura will dive into Ephesians 6:10–18, awakening us to the invisible battle that rages while encouraging us to reach for the weapons that keep us strong and steady. Today, Lisa and Laura introduce us to our first piece of armor, the belt of truth. If you struggle to believe God's truth is ordered toward your happiness, this episode is for you. Grab your coffee and get ready to open your heart, open your Bible, and invite Him in. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Ephesians 6:13–14: Therefore, take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having fastened the belt of truth around your waist. (ESV) Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Ephesians 4:14: So that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the cunning of men, by their craftiness in deceitful wiles. 2 Timothy 3:6–7: Swayed by various impulses, [people] who will listen to anybody and can never arrive at a knowledge of the truth. Genesis 3 John 8:44: You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Proverbs 3:5: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. Matthew 12:34: Out of the abundance of our hearts the mouth speaks. Ephesians 4:26–27: Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil. Ephesians 6:14: Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth. John 8:32: And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. Psalm 106:13-15: But they soon forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel. But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness, and put God to the test in the desert; he gave them what they asked, but sent a wasting disease among them. Invite Him in with this episode's question for reflection. Which of my emotions or decisions do I need to gather up and tuck into the truth? Show mentions. Walking with Purpose, Fearless and Free CCC 397: Man, tempted by the devil, let his trust in his Creator die in his heart and, abusing his freedom, disobeyed God's command. This is what man's first sin consisted of. All subsequent sin would be disobedience toward God and lack of trust in his goodness. Written in the 15th century around the same time as the invention of the printing press, The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis was printed in several languages and became a bestseller. It is widely regarded as the most important devotional work in Catholic Christianity and one of the most-read devotional works next to the Bible. It undoubtedly helped many Christian mystics in that era and beyond to develop a closer relationship to Christ on their quest for mystical experiences. Furthermore, it was also a source of personal inspiration and support for Dr. Carlos Eire during a difficult time in his childhood, which he shares with us in this episode.
