Happy Tuesday, Everyone! I hope you're enjoying the end of Summer! I had such a great time chatting with my guest this week— the one and only Robbie Amell! If you don't know Robbie, he is currently starring as Nathan Brown in the final season of Upload, a show which I absolutely love. He also played Ronnie Raymond on The Flash, as well as Connor Reed in Code 8 and Code 8: Part II, which he also produced. We talk about his recent move back to Canada (you know I love my Canadians) and what it was like becoming a dad while shooting Upload. We also talk about his comedic timing, his experience learning from some of the greats early on in his career and what he's learned from watching Upload creator Greg Daniels work alongside his son Owen, who also stars on the show. We are also both huge F1 fans, so I try to control myself and not let us talking about his recent trip to Monaco COMPLETELY take over the conversation. I'm excited for you to get to know him better and for everyone to watch the final season of Upload, which is streaming now! As always, make sure you stick around after the interview for the Hindsight, where I try to convince my producer Jeph to join me for a spartan race and we talk about plans for our upcoming live recording of The Sackhoff Show right here in my hometown of Portland! “They would take you around, introduce you to all of their contacts, translate for you, and help you put together the story,” says scholar-journalist Kira Brunner Don in this week's episode of The World in Time. “And I often felt like, you pay them, of course, a day rate, but there was this understanding that real news was made by American journalists who flew in and told you what was what. All of us were depending on journalists from the country, or writers from the country, who knew it far better than we did and really had the context and the sensibility. But there was this unspoken rule that they'll be biased. I really felt like I wanted to create something that instead focused on the actual voices of the people who live in the countries we're covering.” This week on the podcast Donovan Hohn hosts a two-part episode. First, he speaks with Kira Brunner Don, former executive editor of Lapham's Quarterly, about the making of our first issue, States of War, from Winter 2008, and about the magazine Brunner Don edits now, Stranger's Guide. In part two of this episode, Hohn speaks with Nathan Brown, translator of Verso's new dual-language edition of Charles Baudelaire's The Flowers of Evil, about the history of Baudelaire's magnum opus. Brown gives us a guided tour of “Recueillement,” the Baudelaire poem read at Lewis Lapham's memorial service, which Brown has translated anew for Lapham's Quarterly, under the title “Introspection.”

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 24, 2025 is: quip KWIP noun Quip can refer to a clever, usually taunting remark, or to a witty or funny observation or response usually made on the spur of the moment. // They traded quips over a beer and laughed themselves silly. See the entry > Examples: "He's always got a story, is always ready with a quip and isn't afraid to let the four-letter words roll off the tongue in the most creative ways." — Nathan Brown, The Indianapolis Star, 26 Apr. 2023 Did you know? To tweak a well-known line from Hamlet, brevity is the soul of quip. While jokes are often brief stories with setups followed by surprising and funny endings (chickens crossing roads, elephant footprints in the butter, etc.) quips are even briefer, and not so planned or scripted. They are more likely to arise naturally in conversation when someone is especially quick-witted, firing off zingers, retorts, or—if you want to get extra fancy about it—bon mots. Brevity also plays a role in quip's etymology: quip is a shortening of quippy, a now-obsolete noun of the same meaning. Quippy's origins are uncertain, but they may lie in the Latin word quippe, meaning "indeed" or "to be sure," which was often used ironically. Quip entered English as a noun in the 1500s, but was verbified within decades; the verb quip means "to make quips" or "to jest or jibe at."
