Growing up, John Marsden found school incredibly difficult and, as a teenager, spent time in hospital after a breakdown. Elizabeth Knox is one of the country's most esteemed authors, known best for her novels ‘Vintner's Luck' and ‘The Absolute Book'. She's also a dab hand at essay collections and young adult stories, though it had been over a decade since she last wrote for a younger audience. That changed with the release of ‘Kings of this World', a young adult novel focused on the sole survivor of a cult massacre. The book is a long time coming, Knox having written it over the span of several years. “I had the bad habit of writing several books at the same time,” she told Newstalk ZB's Jack Tame. “I developed the strategy when I had a lot of distractions in my life, and I decided to distract myself, so I had some power over that.” “And then I came out of it and thought I'd solved the problem and could always keep doing that, but no,” she told Tame. “Bad habit.” Writing young adult fiction is not dissimilar to writing for adults, but there is one central principle Knox abides by when writing for younger audiences. “You can't deprive the readers of hope,” she explained. “With that in mind, I was able to write a, you know, pretty scary thriller, and I don't think that young readers need to be defended from suspense and fear and things like that.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Catherine Con Morse's debut novel, The Notes, is a 2025 Chinese American Librarians Association Best Book Honorable Mention for Young Adult Fiction, a 2026 Panda Book Award nominee, and was shortlisted for the CRAFT First Chapters contest. Her newest book is The Summer I Remembered Everything (April 2025). A Kundiman fellow, Catherine received her MFA from Boston University, where she taught undergraduate creative writing for several years. Her work appears in Joyland, Letters, HOOT, Bostonia, and elsewhere, and has been a finalist for the Beacon Street Prize and the Baltimore Review fiction prize. While writing The Notes, she was one of the inaugural Writers in Residence at Porter Square Books, where she enjoyed writing in the back office and eating croissants with her cafe discount. In high school, Catherine attended the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, a public arts boarding school, where she was as intrigued with her teacher as Claire is with Dr. Li. Catherine continues to play and teach piano today. Most recently, she taught English at Choate Rosemary Hall, and lives in the Connecticut River Valley with her husband and daughter.Katherine Shizuko Suyeyasu brings 25 years of experience teaching in Oakland, Berkeley, Union City, and the Philadelphia area at the upper-elementary, middle, and graduate school levels. Dame Tracey Emin, one of the most famous artists and leading figures of the Young British Artists movement of the 1990s. Hers is a uniquely provocative, confessional style which confronts issues such as trauma of abortion, rape, alcoholism and sexual history. In recent years Tracey has focussed on painting and she has just published her first in-depth exploration of her painted work, simply called Paintings. It coincides with a new exhibition, I followed you to the end, at the White Cube gallery in London, which features mostly paintings that her treatment and recovery from bladder cancer.A man who raped, and stabbed a woman 60 times in Northumberland 27 years ago has been recommended for release by the parole board. Steven Ling was jailed for life in 1998 after murdering Joanne Tulip. Ms Tulip's mother, Doreen Soulsby has condemned the decision. She shares her story with Anita.Dame Maureen Lipman proposed to her partner, David Turner, as a joke. And he said yes! The two 78-year-olds are now engaged.
