It was released physically on vinyl back on Record Store Day and digitally earlier this month. Rooted in gentle strums,much of its sweetly traditional songcraft was recorded out in Vaughn's Relay Shack studio in the Mojave Desert, and it echoes the most rustic of selections he plays on his great radio show The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn.  Ben's produced albums by Arthur Alexander, Nancy Sinatra, Charlie Feathers, and more—as well as collaborating with Alex Chilton and Alan Vega. For this episode, we spoke about the new album, his work as a Hollywood television music maker, producing Ween's irreverent cult classic 12 Golden Country Greats and much more. "The Elektra staff had changed completely. They had fired the guy who signed us, and basically everybody else, including the president. They brought in this whole new staff whose introduction to Ween was 12 Golden Country Greats. With them not knowing us, they didn't know if it was a put-on. A lot of people have so many misconceptions about that record. I think they thought it was our way to get out of the deal, which wasn't the case at all. It was something we were proud of and love, plus we had The Mollusk about to drop. They had no idea what to do with the country record, so then it came time for The Mollusk, we were thinking, “This is our greatest record.” We mastered it with Howie Weinberg, sent it in, and I didn't hear from Elektra for two weeks. I finally called the A&R guy, because the suspense was killing me. I said, “What do you think of the new record?” And he said, “What new record?” I yelled, “The new record! The Mollusk!” I heard him fumbling around on his desk and he said, “Oh, here it is.” He hadn't even listened to it for two weeks! At that point, I knew the fucking record was doomed. Jesus Christ! They just gave us two huge advances, and we delivered two albums. I don't know if they thought we were trying to put them on a second time, or someone mentioned, “Those guys did a nautical record.” I was so pissed! Gene and Dean Ween are the best songwriting duo since Jagger and Richards, or Lennon and McCartney, or maybe it's Rogers and Hammerstein. You get the point. They are geniuses. Their canon features hundreds and hundreds of songs played to perfection in every genre. Sometimes these songs are drenched in feedback or feature pitch-adjusted vocals. Other times they play Dylanesque odes to former lovers that are a delicate as an orchid. There are songs about golden eels and children born without eyes. They have half a dozen songs about equine friends. They are as adept at speed-freak metal as they are Irish drinking songs. They even did a full country album. Deaner can wow you with his virtuosity on guitar and Gener could get a four-chair turn on The Voice. Ween can do it all.There is really no sampling of Ween that could give you an adequate understanding of what they are capable of.
