Detroit-based luxury design brand Shinola sells everything from jewelry to bikes to journals. In 2019, it even opened a hotel in downtown Detroit. But the is currently laser-focused on refining the answer to the question, “What's the first thing you think of when you think of Shinola?” And it wants that to be watches. “We lost that [focus on watches] for a little while,” said Kevin Wertz, CMO at Bedrock, the platform company that owns Shinola. Bedrock also owns the outerwear brand Filson. Shinola, founded in 2011, quickly gained a following because it was bringing manufacturing jobs back to Detroit. In 2012, the brand opened a 12,000-square-foot watch factory in the city. Over the next few years, it used its expertise in design and craftsmanship to expand into new categories. But in 2016, Shinola ran into a hurdle when the FTC ruled that the company could not use the tagline “Built in Detroit.” Even though Shinola has a watch factory in the U.S., its watches — like all watch brands — largely rely on imported parts. Now, Shinola's watches say “Built in Detroit with Swiss and imported parts.” "We're going back to the idea that we are designing and assembling watches in downtown Detroit,” Wertz said. Despite this, Shinola has found that the best way to tell its story is to do more showing, rather than telling. Wertz said the content that has performed the best for Shinola is raw photos and videos from its factories showing how its watches are made. "People say, 'I don't know what watches being made actually looks like,'” he said, regarding the interest. Wertz joined the Modern Retail podcast this week to talk about how Shinola is refining its brand story.

Joining us today is Enrico Margaritelli, a remarkable figure in the watch industry with a legacy that spans generations. Born into a family of watchmakers, Enrico's journey began with his grandfather, Ariodante Margaritelli, who crafted precision watch instruments for the Italian army during the world wars. This rich heritage laid the foundation for Enrico's career in watchmaking. After completing his studies, he expanded his knowledge by working with two of the most influential business minds of our times – Philippe Starck and Giorgio Armani. In 2017, Enrico co-founded TESLAR Technology, introducing innovative wearable products designed to protect against electromagnetic radiation, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being. These advanced wearables feature the Turbo TESLAR Chip, utilizing scalar technology to bolster the body's natural defenses. In this episode, you will hear: An explanation of the TESLAR technology and how it helps wearers. Enrico describes the difference between a single Turbo TESLAR Chip and the former double chips. How the TESLAR Technology products claim to filter electromagnetic frequencies. Why we should be protecting our bodies from EMF. The use of the triple meridian as a conduit to create a shield. Changing the batteries and the chips for the TESLAR products. Analog versus digital technologies and their effects on body acclimation. Born into the heart of the watch industry, Enrico Margaritelli has always striven to forge his own path within it. During the First and Second World Wars, his grandfather Ariodante Margaritelli, a watchmaker in Parma, created sophisticated technical precision watch instruments for the Italian army. That grounding in the family business provided a foundation for Margaritelli when he joined it, after completing his studies. Margaritelli went on to develop his knowledge of the watch industry by working with two of the most influential and creative business minds of our times – Philippe Starck and Giorgio Armani. He established a partnership with an important Public company in Italy and worked with Philippe Starck to design the first, ever P Starck digital watch. Then, he began licensing Emporio Armani watches and jewelry, before moving to Dallas and become president of the license and luxury division of the company. He also collaborated on watches with fellow Italian Renzo Rosso, creator of Diesel, Rosemarie Bravo, CEO of Burberry, Tiffany, FURLA, and Shinola. By 2006 he was ready, with wife Isabelle, to launch Glam Rock, these days a brand adored by Hollywood celebrities and music-industry stars. "I learned something from each of the fashion geniuses of our time with whom I worked,” he says. In 2017 he created a new LLC together with Ilonka Harezi, co-inventor of TESLAR Technology and start the re-launch of Teslar products. In 2023 he launched the wearable collection, a unisex bracelet that contains the miniaturization of latest Turbo TESLAR Chip. Source: Google Search Is A Lying Liar That Lies Hey everyone, and welcome back to [your podcast name], the podcast where we [your podcast description]. Today, we're taking a trip back in time to 2014, the year of the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” Flappy Bird, and apparently, some questionable SEO advice. We'll be dusting off an old article that claims Google Search, despite all its fancy algorithms, is actually a bit of a one-trick pony when it comes to ranking websites. Google's "One Weird Trick" Approach to SEO This article argues that Google relies on shockingly simple and literal interpretations of website content. Think basic keywords, clear formatting – the digital equivalent of yelling your message from a rooftop instead of subtly weaving it into a captivating story. But the question is, is this still true in 2024? Has Google finally learned some new tricks? Or are we all still stuck playing by the 2014 rules? The Enduring Power of Simplicity Back in 2014, the article preached the gospel of clear, concise language and strategic keyword placement. Page titles, meta descriptions, image alt tags, URLs – you name it, if Google could read it, it wanted it clear, concise, and packed with relevant keywords. But in today's world of voice search and AI-powered assistants, is this laser focus on keywords still relevant? Backlinks: Still a Currency of Credibility? One thing that hasn't changed in the past decade? People still trust recommendations from others, especially when it comes from a reputable source. And guess what? Google's the same way! The article stresses the importance of earning high-quality backlinks from trustworthy websites as a way to boost your site's credibility in Google's eyes. But in a world increasingly dominated by social media influencers and viral content, are backlinks still the gold standard of online authority? From Trend-Surfing to Evergreen Content The 2014 article suggests that hitching your wagon to breaking news was a surefire way to climb Google's rankings. But is Google still falling for this trick in 2024? Or has the search engine giant learned to prioritize evergreen content – the kind of in-depth, informative, and timeless pieces that keep people coming back for more? Outro So, there you have it – a blast from the past and a glimpse into the future of SEO. Join us next time on The Chris Abraham Show when we'll Talk More Shit and Shinola. I've never talked with Stephan Perkins from Third Eye Blind, so I can check him off my ever-growing list of rockers I've interviewed. Right off the bat, we talked about touring, and how much he likes it. He commented on how concerts bring us together "That collective sense of feeling lets us know that we're not alone." You can see him and Third Eye Blind along with Yellowcard and A R I Z O N A on July 7th at Pine Knob Music Theater. We talked about a recent unplugged performance he did at an Emo club. "It was fun, man, it was fun," he said about the impromptu show. Third Eye Blind Teams Up With Detroit's Own Shinola There are also a couple of other things we talked about, one is their collab with Shinola. Stephan talked about how he likes that the watches are Made In America and the local craftsmen who make them. They have a limited edition watch coming out. "It's super cool. It's obviously American-made". He said they'll be visiting the store when they come through, as well as Jack White's Third Man Records. How Did His Life Change In The 90s? His life changed in a huge way in the 90s when Third Eye Blind broke. As I asked him this, he paused for about 5 seconds before answering. He went on to talk about how he lived in an apartment with 6 roommates, one bath and he slept on packing foam. He spoke to the bands he started or joined that fell apart until the band finally broke. After massive tours with U2 and The Rolling Stones, he found himself driving home after two years on the road. "Tears streamed down my face because I realized where I'd gone to, this delineation of points," he said. We wrapped our conversation by talking about how the thrash scene in San Francisco where he's from had any effect on his musical tastes.

Grassland explores the failures of the criminal justice system by focusing on one family in suburban New Jersey, and the draconian cannabis laws impacting their lives and the lives of those in their community. The film is a family drama above all, with authentic and grounded performances from Quincy Isaiah as well as Mia Maestro, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, and Jeff Kober in starring roles. Grassland effectively communicates the ineffectiveness of drug laws in parts of this country, which disproportionately impact minorities and have long lasting ripple effects that play out over the course of years. The new Shinola 420 Grassland Runwell, available to order today from Shinola, was designed in partnership with Quincy Isaiah, and, like the film, was created to bring awareness to the racial disparity in marijuana arrests and promote reform of the criminal justice system. In this episode of Time on Screen, Zach, Quincy, and Philip discuss the design of the watch, how the project came to be, and why this is a meaningful endeavor for all involved. A portion of the proceeds of each watch—limited to 420 pieces—is pledged to support criminal justice reform policies.

This week we're discussing every album by the one and only Ween. Made up of Gene and Dean Ween (real names Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo), Ween is one of the most impossible bands to pigeonhole. Garage rock, funk, folk, hard rock, tropical, pirate sea shanties, prog rock, psychedelic—this is only a taste of all the styles these guys frequently hop between. And they do so with complete sincerity and unmatched songwriting. A one of a kind band.Closing track: “Buckingham Green” from The Mollusk (1997)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexHistory Tom's stuff:New album on BandcampDebut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:The Mollusk (1997) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteThe Pod (1991) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Quebec (2003) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteShinola, Vol. 1 (2005) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…GodWeenSatan: The Oneness (1990)The Pod (1991)Pure Guava (1992)Chocolate and Cheese (1994)12 Golden Country Greats (1996)The Mollusk (1997)White Pepper (2000)Quebec (2003)Shinola, Vol. 1 (2005)La Cucaracha (2007)
A Week In Watches returns with big news from Seiko, who revealed a pair of new Prospex references which celebrate the brand's history in land-based watches. The pair of limited editions each pick up something special from Seiko's history, starting with the SPB411 GMT, a watch that recalls the Navigator Timer of the '60s, which was Seiko first GMT to feature a rotating bezel. The second is a revival of the Landmaster in celebration of its 30th anniversary, where Seiko has brought back the 3 dimensional compass bezel and blue gradient dial. Both work exceptionally well, and highlight the brand's deep tool watch roots at their very best.Elsewhere we were thrilled to see a new release from Baltic this week, which shifted away from old-school-cool dive watches and put focus on classic field watches. The frame works brilliantly here with lumed applied numerals, a svelte case, and a trick crown that sits flush with the case wall. The watch boasts 4 different dials at launch, and is a welcome expansion of the brand's refined sense of design. Finally, new releases from Nomos and Ming, as well as a collaboration between Montblanc/Minerva and Collective round out the news that's caught our attention this week. Catch the full episode below for the run down, and be sure to leave a comment on your thoughts in the video for us to highlight in the next episode. Thanks to this week's sponsor, Shinola, for their support. To commemorate 10 years of American design and manufacturing, Shinola Detroit is proud to share this video that reveals the company and its employees as a team that can carve a distinct pathway forward with their own sense of, as they say, “timeless American design.”This cinematic video gives an insider glimpse of their watchmakers assembling timepieces, soaring views of the Detroit headquarters, and shares perspective on the past decade as well as Shinola's aims for the future.Learn more about Shinola's Timeless American Design, their latest watch and apparel releases right here. You will also be able to see a selection of Shinola's watches and fine goods at Windup Watch Fair NYC on October 20-22 at The Altman Building, located at 135 W 18th St, New York, NY.

This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week our host and aBlogtoWatch Founder Ariel Adams is joined by Awenate Cobbina, the CEO of Bedrock Manufacturing and Interim CEO of Shinola. Ariel dives right into Awenate's work history and they give a list of some of the brands that he has either been CEO of or played a major role in. The two also talk about what ties everything together at Awenate's two current companies, Bedrock and Shinola. Awenate then dives into how Shinola's original goal was to help create jobs in the heart of America based off the passions of its creator, Tom Kartsotis, and how Awenate is honoring that goal while trying to also progress the company even further into more goals and aspirations. Ariel asks about the manufacturing of watches and if it is the “ultimate challenge” within today's industrial complex, and also asks Awenate about the best way to defend or explain the reason behind higher prices to the customers and the marketing challenge behind that. Ariel also wants to know from Awenate what he is looking to learn from his customers and stores when he is visiting the retail spaces and getting a hands-on experience. The two jump back to Shinola's roots and how the journey may have changed since its inception, but also on how Shinola is always aiming to bring American culture into their watch designs and the stories behind them. You'll hear JCK editor-in-chief Victoria Gomelsky and news director Rob Bates talk about Conversations in Park City, a new De Beers CEO, and a new spin on a classic Patek Philippe watch. Victoria recaps her time in Park City, where she contemplated the present and future of retail with experts curated by PSFK. Rob reports on the change in leadership at De Beers, where Bruce Cleaver has stepped down and become co-chairman, and Al Cook will step into his shoes as CEO. Victoria covers the latest iteration of a popular Nautilus and what it means for the direction of the Patek Philippe brand.Show Notes01:00 Victoria interviewed the president of Bulgari who was in the Maldives.04:30 A recap of Conversations in Park City09:00 A change in leadership at De Beers19:55 New Patek Philippe watchEpisode CreditsHosts: Rob Bates and Victoria GomelskyProducer and engineer: Natalie ChometPlugs: @jckmagazine, jckonline.com Show RecapHospitality Meets JewelryVictoria got up early to speak to the president of Bvlgari, Daniel Paltridge, who was in the Maldives at the time. They talk about the Bvlgari hotel and how expensive it is—€2,500 per night! Rob wonders what guests might get in addition to the room for that price. (Likely not jewelry.) There are other examples of brands that cross over from fashion to hospitality—Armani, Shinola, etc. The hope is that you can capture an audience in one and then target them in the other side of the business.Conversations with Friends—in Park CityVictoria recently traveled to Park City, UT, to Conversations in Park City, the leadership summit hosted by Jewelers Mutual. The brainchild of Mark Smelzer, head of content for Jewelers Mutual (and JCK's former publisher). He had a vision to pull together the crème de la crème of the industry and bringing them all to a leadership retreat. Everyone met at the St. Regis in Deer Valley, with their loved ones in tow. Victoria brought her family and enjoyed the wonderful weather. But the main focus was the content. Mark pulled in one of the leading thinkers on retail strategy and futurism, PSFK. Jeff Weiner of PSFK brought in some experts that they've used for their presentations—on the omnichannel experience, “phigital” retail, and other things retailers need to be prepared for. It was both present- and future-focused, informing retailers about shifts in the consumer atmosphere. Though Victoria tends to tune out when people talk about NFTs, she found this coverage easier to digest. It was a beautiful setting for some great conversations. Overall, the event was brief and meaningful. She hopes there will be another one next year.A Change in Leadership for De BeersRob reports that Bruce Cleaver is stepping down as CEO of De Beers and handing over the reins to Al Cook—an industry outsider who worked for an energy company. His predecessor, Philippe Mellier, was also an outsider. He got great results for the bottom line of the company, but injured some relationships with clients who felt he drove prices too high. Bruce repaired that relationship, and is well-respected. Though it's not clear why he is leaving this position, he will still be involved as co-chairman. It's a job where you're never bored because there are so many aspects to it.Victoria wonders about the selection process. She points out that the new CEO is another European white man. Was anyone from their stakeholder countries considered? Some people have pointed out that De Beers is an African company that caters to women, yet all of its CEOs have been white men. People have comment that Al Cook doesn't have the background on marketing, branding, etc. An outsider will have to be tutored in the varied aspects of the business. It's also of note that Bruce is leaving without a contract with Botswana. A rough agreement has been drafted, but not signed yet. De Beers' portfolio has been diversified by lab-grown, which might give them some leverage. The Lab-Grown Diamond TrajectoryIt's been four years since Lightbox came out. Lab-grown is such a complicated market. Many still don't accept it as a viable category. Swarovski is rolling out lab-grown as well. Breitling has just announced they're starting to use lab-grown diamonds and fully traceable gold. This is more transparent than Victoria has seen a Swiss brand be. It's clear that lab-grown is going to be part of the conversation going forward.New Patek Philippe Watch Speaking of watches! Victoria wrote an NYT piece about a Patek Philippe watch using white gold that might “break the horological internet.” The long-awaited successor to the 5711—a hyped but discontinued watch model— is here. Called the 5811, its main difference is that it's in white gold instead of steel. A Nautilus that has been around since 1976, Victoria is confident it will be popular. It's close to people's hearts, and has always been in steel until now. They're breaking away from the steel sport models that fetch more than the gold models. They went to the prestige category. What they are concerned about is the preservation of the brand. It'll be hard to acquire by an average consumer. Their aim is to elevate the brand.

For this episode ofaBlogtoWatch Weekly, our usual trio of hosts, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Cam from the TriWatches Podcast. To kick off the show, our hosts discuss how Geneva is finally going to have its first pre-owned luxury watches event, and ponder what the Swiss version of a pre-owned watches show might look like, given Switzerland's long-standing reluctance to embrace the secondary market. From there, the conversation shifts to the truth behind the decrease in pre-owned luxury watch prices, and how this recent change is only really allocated to the mega-hype watches that were trading hands for values significantly above their original brand new retail prices. Given that an increasing number of manufacturers are entering the pre-on space themselves, our quartet of hosts tries to answer the question as to whether or not there might ever come a time when we see the entire pre-owned luxury watch industry shift towards an in-house format. After discussing all things related to the pre-owned luxury watch industry, our hosts turn their attention to the new factory restoration program that G-Shock is offering for select vintage collectible models, and how this limited-time program shows a commitment to the brand's heritage and its dedicated collectors. With the final word said on older watches, Ariel, Rick, David, and Cam turned their attention to new watches, and up first is the all-new Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer from Omega. After discussing whether or not the X-33 platform can still be considered a class-leading astronaut's tool, our hosts decide to discuss the new Shinola Mechanic watches and whether or not these new models represent a new enthusiast-driven direction for the brand. Closing out this week's episode is a review of the new Linear Series 1 Tourbillon from Hautlence, and a quick discussion of how this decidedly modern and funky brand fits in with the rest of the various timepieces that occupy a similar space within the industry. As always, Ariel has an exciting upcoming schedule with a dinner for Hublot and a trip to Sicily with Jacob & Co., and there will also be special edition episodes of aBlogtoWatch Weekly coming down the pipeline, with the first one featuring an inside look at Bulgari watches.Show Notes2:27https://www.ablogtowatch.com/ariels-thoughts-it-should-be-no-surprise-that-recently-inflated-watch-prices-are-down/9:21https://www.ablogtowatch.com/casio-announces-factory-restoration-program-for-select-vintage-g-shock-watches/28.13Last Weeks Show This Week29:33https://www.ablogtowatch.com/omega-unveils-the-speedmaster-x-33-marstimer-watch/37:53https://www.ablogtowatch.com/hands-on-debut-shinola-mechanic-watches/46:08https://www.ablogtowatch.com/hands-on-hautlence-linear-series-1-tourbillon-watch/We'd love to hear from you with feedback or suggestions for future show topics or guests. John and Christine Gachot are the husband-and-wife team behind the design studio that bears their name, Gachot Studios. The two first met while working together for iconic designer Bill Sofield in the late 1990s, but it took them a long time to start their own firm. First, Christine spent a decade with hotelier Andre Balazs, while John acted as design director for David Easton and then Thad Hayes. In 2012, the Gachots finally started working together, and their studio has been on a tear ever since, designing everything from magazine-ready homes; to the Shinola hotel in Detroit and the Pendry in New York; to a line of fixtures for Waterworks. In this episode of the podcast, John and Christine speak with host Dennis Scully about taking on different kinds of work to stay creatively engaged, why they don't charge markups on product, and their approach to thoughtfully growing—and keeping—a large design team. This episode is sponsored by The Shade Store and Crypton.LINKSGachot StudiosDennis ScullyBusiness of Home
