JOHN McCUTCHEON AND TOM PAXTON JOIN FORCES TO CREATE THEIR FIRST JOINT RECORDING TITLED ‘TOGETHER' John McCutcheon and Tom Paxton have been pals for decades, but it was COVID and Zoom that turned them into a songwriting team. Every Monday at 2PM they'd tell jokes, reminisce about old friends, and, of course, talk lots of sports. What happens when two of folk music's most beloved and prolific songwriters join forces? Songs about history, the news, baseball, cowboys, America, love, the remembered, the forgotten. The arrangements are compelling, the production pristine, and the performances stunning. From the stirring “Ukrainian Now” to the hilarious “Same Old Crap,” the immigrant story of “In America” to the heart stopping finale, “Together,” each song shines as would be expected of this partnership. John McCutcheon & Tom Paxton together have seeded the folk music landscape with hundreds of songs, sung by thousands for decades. With the album ‘Together', they add another bunch of great new ones to the repertoire of our time. And, given the bounty of those Monday afternoons, this is only the beginning. PLEASE WELCOME TWO FOLK LEGENDS JOHN MCCUTCHEON AND TOM PAXTON TO INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS … PURCHASE THE LATEST ALBUM BY Tom Paxton and John McCutcheon entitled ‘Together' The long-awaited collaboration between two of folk music's most beloved and prolific songwriters. The COVID pandemic finally brought these two old friends together via weekly Zoom cowriting sessions. This fourteen-song collection released on Appalsongs Records, barely scratches the surface of the hundred-or-so songs John & Tom came up with. With pristine production and world-class musicianship, the songs cover ground from Ukraine to Ellis Island to Shakey's Pizza to a cowboy campfire. THE ARWEN LEWIS SHOW - Featuring Don Stevenson, Moby Grape After years of playing a circuit of R&B clubs and events and speakeasies in the Pacific Northwest, Don Stevenson trekked down to the Bay Area in the summer of '65. He'd recently joined The Frantics. The following summer he co-founded the iconic San Francisco band, Moby Grape. Playing ballrooms, like The Fillmore and Avalon, the Grape instantly became the darlings of the Bay Area, and the object of a massive bidding war. In the early weeks of '67, the fivesome shuffled between San Francisco and LA with record company executives from Columbia, Atlantic, and Elektra elbowing each other out of the way, with contracts and pens in hand. Signing with Columbia, Moby Grape recorded their debut in a handful of sessions in the spring of '67. The album came out a few days after Pepper and a couple of weeks later, the Grape played a killer set at the Monterey Pop Festival. As a songwriting-singing drummer, Don Stevenson was a trailblazer, opening the door for the likes of Levon Helm and Don Henley. Moby Grape's self-titled LP isn't just one of the best debuts in history, it's one of the best albums ever cut. It's now over half a century after those heady days and today Stevenson is putting out his third solo album, Limited Engagement—Volume 1. Produced by Jamie Collins- SoundSuiteMusic, and featuring such talent as Tim Bovaconti (Burton Cummings Band), Dane Clark (John Mellencamp Band), and Dale Ockerman (Doobie Brothers), the album includes 11 stellar tracks tapping into all the genres Moby Grape explored so many years ago. With another dozen tracks in the can, Stevenson's next album is right around the corner and he's looking into the past, present, and future all at once. At 82, Don Stevenson has every bit as much energy as those two generations younger and you'll witness this when his band hits the stage at Massey Hall. Having shared the bill with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Steve Miller, The Byrds, BB King, Buddy Guy, Sly Stone, and a host of others, Don Stevenson is no stranger to event concerts, like Chest Fever. Prepare to be bowled over by a seasoned icon. Don Stevenson - https://mobygrape.us The Arwen Lewis Show Host | Arwen Lewis Executive Producer | Jeremiah D. Superdrag first gained recognition with their debut album, "Regretfully Yours," which featured the hit single "Sucked Out." Elektra records upped the dough for a sophomore album hoping the band would follow-up the hit with more radio friendly singles. Instead, "Head Trip in Every Key," marked a significant departure from their freshman effort. The band continued to deliver their trademark catchy melodies, but this time, they incorporated more diverse musical elements, like psychedelic rock and Beach Boys-esque pop. The album featured a broader range of instruments and experimental sounds, showcasing the band's evolving musical maturity. The band's sound became more intricate and layered, reflecting a greater musical complexity in their compositions. Despite these changes, Superdrag's unmistakable energy and John Davis' distinctive vocals remained at the core of their sound, making "Head Trip in Every Key" an important milestone in their musical evolution. Born in New Orleans in 1899, Alonzo "Lonnie" Johnson was one of America's great blues and jazz artists, touring with Bessie Smith, recording with Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, with Charlie Christian and Eddie Lang, with stride piano giant James P. Johnson and so many more.He was a guitar pioneer. In fact, blues historian Gérard Herzhaft believes Johnson was "undeniably the creator of the guitar solo played note by note with a pick, which has become the standard in jazz, blues, country and rock.”He started that style as early as 1927 with his solo on "6/88 Glide" for Okeh Records.More Chops Than ThatBut while his guitar innovations reached both Delta blues and urban players who adapted and developed them into the modern electric blues style, Johnson also was known in the 1920s as a sophisticated and urbane singer and composer. In fact, "of the 40 ads for his records that appeared in The Chicago Defender between 1926 and 1931,” music historian Elijah Wald notes, “not one even mentioned that he played guitar."But when record sales plunged in the Depression, Johnson's output dwindled and he worked for a while at a Cleveland radio station, among other jobs, just to make ends meet. Things started looking up again in 1937 when he went to Chicago to begin recording for Decca. Two years later he joined Lester Melrose's roster at the new Bluebird Records, for which Lonnie recorded 34 tracks over the next five years. The SongA solo hit from one for the last of the Bluebird sessions was Johnson's composition, “He's a Jelly Roll Baker,” recorded Feb. 13, 1942, with Blind John Davis on piano and Andrew Harris on bass.In addition to its scintillating guitar break, the track's lyrics demonstrate Lonnie Johnson's growth as a savvy songwriter. “Jelly Roll Baker” presents a swaggering protagonist who proclaims his love-making prowess with women from all walks of society, from a judge's wife to a hospital nurse.InfluencesLonnie's second career — which included “I Know It's Love” on which he switched to the electric guitar that would be his signature instrument from then on — eventually disappeared under an avalanche of rock 'n' roll in the early ‘50s. Ironically, “Tomorrow Night,” a Johnson hit on King Records, was one of Elvis Presley's earliest pressings for Sam Phillips at the Sun studios. (Presley recorded it in September 1954, though it wasn't released for another dozen year.) Meanwhile, Lonnie Johnson gained acclaim with a new crowd 10 years later during the folk music revival. The Flood learned its version of “Jelly Roll Baker” from Tom Rush's debut Elektra album, released in 1965. Rush, who picked up the tune from fellow folkie Geoff Muldaur, recorded it with Bill Lee on bass and John Sebastian on harmonica.Lonnie's Last YearsJohnson life was cut short when he was hit by a car while walking on a sidewalk in Toronto in March 1969. Seriously injured, he suffered a broken hip and kidney damage. A benefit concert was held on in May 1969, with two dozen acts, including Ian and Sylvia, John Lee Hooker and Hagood Hardy. Never fully recovering from a subsequent stroke, Johnson died 13 months later. Our Take on the TuneAs noted, while this sassy song as written and recorded 80 years ago as a rhythm and blues hit, we owe our version to our folk music heroes of the 1960s.To this day, it's one of those perfect warmup tunes for us, because it provides plenty of stretching-out room for solos by everyone in the house, Danny and Sam, Randy and Jack.More Blues? If you're not ready to end today's blues infusion, you can get a big dose of Floodishness with the Blues Channel on our free Radio Floodango music streaming service. Click here to tune in and enjoy the jelly roll. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit 1937flood.substack.com
TRACKS 1- East River Drive (Grover Washington Jr) 2- Come Mornin' (Grover Washington Jr) 3- Be Mine (Tonight) (McDonald/Salter/Eaton) 4- Reaching Out (Grover Washington Jr) 5- Jamming (Marley) 6- Little Black Samba (McDonald/Salter/Eaton) 7- Making Love to You (Grover Washington Jr) 8- I'm All Yours (Tee/Gadd) CREDITS Grover Washington Jr Sax Ralph McDonald Conga & percussion Steve Gadd Drums Marcus Miller Bass Richard Tee Fender Rhodes Eric Gale Guitar Paul Griffin Synths Grady Tate Vocals on "Be Mine (Tonight)" y "Little Black Samba" Yvonne Lewis, Vivian Cherry, Ullanda McCullough, Frank Floyd, Zack Sanders, William Eaton Background Vocals on "Be Mine(Tonight)", "Little Black Samba" , "Jamming"
Daredevil is a complicated hero – DD historically sits at the bottom of the top tier heroes (save for a dynamic once-every-decade redefining run), mixing dark magic ninjas with Irish-Catholic guilt like few comics can, and – in great part due to a shared pool of creators – is regularly seen as a crimson-imitation of Batman (and sometimes, they even team up). But then, in 2019, Chip Zdarsky dared to bring Daredevil due on 55 years of potential, promises, and conflicting mythologies: Mike Murdock lives, Elektra dons the cowl, The Daredevils vs The Fisks for the fate of NYC, new trajectory for Typhoid Mary, and the “resolution” to The Hand saga. After a 70 issue Daredevil Era-Event-Experience, the finale left Matt, Elektra, & Hell's Kitchen itself in a dangerously familiar yet mysterious direction. Join The Action Pack PLUS The Billy Club crew as they look at Daredevil (vol 8) #1 PLUS a look at the 25h anniversary of Guardian Devil, the landmark Kevin Smith story proving Daredevil still had more life after Frank Miller & Ann Nocenti's then-nearly decade old runs & a history of Daredevil's biggest eras, number ones, and more! Then, with ELEKTRA, Bailey comes to the tragic conclusion that she doesn't know as much as she thinks she does about Greek Mythology. Finally, we celebrate the masterful career of the one and only Rufus Sewell. (You're welcome.)
The Ox was not the most memorable villain Daredevil had in the earliest issues o the title, but Ox's second appearance, while rote with tropes that were common to the era, manages to finally reclaim the energy that once belonged to the title. The transition of artists, writers, and genre left Daredevil languishing, like the wrong mind in the wrong body – which is exactly what Daredevil #15 delivers! Then – The Billy Club is back with an all-new news special! Daredevil Omnibus volume 2 was announced leading Nico & Tori to a deeeeep rabbit hole looking at literally every Marvel Omnibus edition to contain Daredevil or Elektra content! They look at the proper runs (the Classic 60s, Miller, Bendis, Waid, & more) plus crossover collections (like Shadowland and the X-Men collections), as well as what's still missing (like the Ann Nocenti run)! Next – The D23 Expo may as well been named Daredevil 23 Expo with the amazing news they provided to The Billy Club team! The incredible event gave new clips from She-Hulk featuring Daredevil, Echo news, a new Born Again logo, and more beyond just the new Disney+ show! There's news of Daredevil headed to the theme parks and even a Mickey Mouse and BEARDEVIL mashup!? Last – The hotly-anticipated appearance of Matt Murdock (aka I Am Not Daredevil) has finally arrived! On this installment of The Billy Club, Nico and Tori are joined by Producer Kevo as they discuss the hornhead's triumphant return to superheroics with his first full appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Does the devil live up to the hype? Hell yes!! The She-Hulk series perfectly nails the character of Matt Murdock that we knew and loved from the Netflix series while continuing to expand the character, making these fans even more excited for what's to come. X Is For Show is your premiere place for web content where we discuss your favorite media, from comics to film & television to gaming and beyond! There's much more to the fiercely intelligent, multitalented singer-songwriter-keyboardist Patrice Rushen than “Forget Me Nots,” though that song, with its get-up-and-dance groove and Rushen's sweet vocals, is undeniable. Not only was it a Grammy-nominated hit in 1982, but it served as the basis for Will Smith's “Men in Black” (amid a tense negotiation) and in 2021 became a viral TikTok dance sensation. Just what you'd expect from a formally trained jazz pianist who began studying music at age 3, was signed to the jazz label Prestige at age 17 and moved on to record funky, genre-defying music for Elektra. She also has scored films such as Hollywood Shuffle, served as music director for the Grammy and Emmy Awards, and chairs the University of Southern California's Popular Music Program. It's all of a piece, she explains, and straight from the heart.
INTERVIEW: Busting onto the comics scene during the heyday of Valiant Comics, Sean Chen is a journeyman penciller who also happens to design toys and remodel homes. And somewhere along the line, he also helped Marvel with licensed products and style guides. Now, after several years pursuing other projects, Sean is back in the comics game with his co-created series EVERMIND! Andrea Belfi discusses his latest album, Eternally Frozen, a canon-based composition for percussion, electronics, and brass ensemble. Inspired by a visit to LA's Museum of Jurassic Technology, Belfi draws upon the story of Deprong Mori, a mythological bat that could use its powers of echolocation to phase through solid matter, before being captured by an American researcher, “eternally frozen” in lead. Movement, circularity, and stasis are all terms that also describe Belfi's interests as a composer. We discuss his origins in Italy's punk scene, his time as drummer of the noisy instrumental rock band Rosolina Mar, opening for Thom Yorke, and the development of his unique approach to solo performance as a drummer. Get ready as we dissect "Elektra" (2005) on the Bad Movies Rule Podcast. Directed by Rob Bowman, this flick promises more ninja action, but my step dad made promises too and look where that got us.Join us as we follow Jennifer Garner's portrayal of Elektra Natchios (not Nachos, sadly), an assassin with supernatural skills that she rarely uses, on a mission that's part NPC escort quest, part fighting F List characters, and all parts perplexing. With villains so dumb, they make you question why you're watching, and a plot trying so hard, it rivals a tween at a sleepover. But here's the million-dollar question: Does "Elektra" shine as an unintentional comedy gem in the superhero genre, or is it just a punchline in the grand joke of cinematic history? Join us as we slice and dice our way through the madness, delivering our verdict on whether "Elektra" is a hilariously electrifying hit or a super-powered "seriously, what were they thinking?" miss.Bad Movies Rule is a movie podcast about the movies you love even if no one else does. You can support Bad Movies Rule on Patreon here. You can join our community on Facebook and TikTok.You can email the show any movie-related questions for our mailbag episodes here.
“When we say ‘treatment for menopause,' it implies that menopause is a disease, when really it's a normal and expected time of life,” says Dr. Anna Barbieri, an integrative medicine physician and specialist in menopause certified by the North American Menopause Society. That attentiveness to word choice is reflective of a new perspective that's driving Dr. Barbieri and her peers to see menopause more holistically than in the past and to forge new approaches to the care they provide. "Menopause care is not checkbox medicine. We have to work with our patients individually," Barbieri shares with special guest host Dr. Deborah Enegess, herself a practicing gynecologist as well as a clinical content writer for Osmosis. A personalized approach involves tailoring care plans that take exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress management and other lifestyle and psychological factors into account in an effort to help patients feel better in the short term and longer term. Providers also have to contend with a shift in long-held thinking about the use of hormone therapy and a bewildering array of supplements that are touted as effective remedies for various symptoms. To help sort through all of this complexity, new resources have come on the scene in recent years, including the digital platform Elektra Health -- of which Barbieri is the founding physician -- that describes its mission as “smashing the menopause taboo.” Check out this engaging exploration of what looks to be a promising time for women in search of individualized, integrated and informed care during their menopause journey.Mentioned in this episode: https://www.elektrahealth.com/

It's truly fitting that the former American Gladiator known as "Shadow," later gaining wider recognition as "Elektra" - Salina Bartunek-Andrews - from the iconic 1990s television show American Gladiators, takes the spotlight in the second episode of the engaging five-part series titled "The Gladiator Gauntlet" on the Shadows Podcast. This captivating episode delves into Salina's background and journey. Hailing from a family of high achievers and athletes, Salina discusses her upbringing, revealing the tragic loss of her mother to Multiple Sclerosis when her mother was just 37 years old. Overcoming grief, injuries and surgeries during her high school years, which prevented her from pursuing a military career, Salina found an alternative path as a professional dancer, choreographer, and sports model. The intriguing question arises: How did she transition from her Broadway performances to becoming one of the American Gladiators? Salina takes us on a reflective journey, recounting the pivotal moment during the Hang Tough tapings where she endured a severe injury that left her with a shattered nose. She provides insight into her thoughts and emotions during that harrowing experience and its aftermath. Additionally, she shares her perspective on ESPN's creation of the "30 For 30" documentary about American Gladiators. Beyond her Gladiators days, Salina also discusses her promising prospects in the realms of health, fitness, directing, producing, and writing. Edith Wharton was born Edith Newbold Jones on January 24, 1862, into a wealthy New York family. She was a prolific writer, known for her insightful and critical portrayal of the American upper class. Her most famous works include "The Age of Innocence," "Ethan Frome," and "The House of Mirth." Wharton was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1921. She was also a keen designer, traveler, and a dedicated supporter of French efforts during World War I, for which she was awarded the French Legion of Honor. The Story and Its Context: "The House of the Dead Hand" was published in 1904, a time when Wharton was beginning to establish herself as a serious writer. This was a period of significant personal and social change for Wharton. She was beginning to question the constraints of her privileged New York society, and these themes of societal constraints and personal freedom are evident in the story. The story also reflects Wharton's love for Italy and her deep knowledge of art and culture."The House of the Dead Hand" by Edith Wharton is a compelling exploration of power dynamics, personal freedom, and the enduring influence of the past. The story centers around Miss Lombard, a woman trapped by her father's control and his obsession with a Leonardo da Vinci painting. Even after her father's death, she remains ensnared by his influence, symbolized by the painting she cannot sell. This narrative can be seen as a critique of patriarchal control, reflecting Wharton's own questioning of societal constraints. From a Freudian perspective, Miss Lombard's complex relationship with her father can be interpreted as a manifestation of the Elektra complex. The story also incorporates elements of Jungian psychology, with the painting serving as a powerful symbol of the unconscious. Wharton's narrative structure effectively builds tension, foreshadows dramatic events, and delivers a chilling twist, leaving a lasting impression of Miss Lombard's despair and entrapment.New Patreon RequestBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Barry Knapp Bostwick is an American actor. He is best known for portraying Brad Majors in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) and Mayor Randall Winston in the sitcom Spin City (1996–2002). Bostwick has also had considerable success in musical theatre, winning a Tony Award for his role in The Robber Bridegroom.Universal Studios Hollywood is adding a Fast and the Furious roller coaster to its theme park. The coaster is going to have a drift effect like the cars in the movie do Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie tells Games Radar that he almost used de-aging technology to make Tom Cruise appear younger at the beginning of the film. "Originally, there had been a whole sequence at the beginning of the movie that was going to take place in 1989, We talked about it as a cold open, we talked about it as flashbacks in the movie, we looked at de-aging. One of the big things about [the de-aging] I was looking at while researching, I kept saying, 'Boy, this de-aging is really good' or 'This de-aging is not so good.' Never did I find myself actually following the story. I was so distracted by an actor that I had known for however long was now suddenly this young person.”The Daily Star says Hugh Grant is under fire for playing an Oompa Loompa in the new Willy Wonka film. Little People actors are furious that he was cast as a little person. Former WWE wrestling star Hornswoggle says, “Don't get me started on the forthcoming Willy Wonka movie. In Mel Stuart's 1971 version, he cast 10 dwarfs to play the Oompa Loompas. In Tim Burton's 2005 remake, the role went to 4ft 4in Gurdeep Roy, who was digitally cloned. So why has the role now gone to 5ft 11in Hugh Grant? People need to see real dwarf actors in blockbuster fantasy movies.”The Daily Mail says Jennifer Garner is taking boxing classes in Los Angeles to prepare for her role as Elektra in ''Deadpool 3''.Tom Holland says getting sober has been one of the best things he's done in his life. Entertainment Tonight quotes him as saying, “I didn't one day wake up and say I'm giving up drinking. I just, like many Brits had, had a very, very boozy December, Christmas time I was on vacation, I was drinking a lot, and I've always been able to drink a lot. I think I get my genes from my mum's side in that thing, not I can, I can drink. And I decided to just give up for January. I just wanted to do dry January and all I could think about was having a drink. That's all I could think about. I was waking up thinking about it. I was checking the clock, when's at 12pm? And it just really scared me. I just was like, wow. Maybe. Maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing. So I sort of decided to punish myself and say, I'll do February as well. I'll do two months off. If I can do two months off, then I can prove to myself that I don't have a problem. Two months go by and I was still really struggling. I felt like I couldn't be social. I felt like I couldn't go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn't go out for dinner. I was really, really struggling and I started to really worry that maybe I had an alcohol problem.”The Daily Mail says Tom Cruise wants to star in a movie with Margot Robbie. A source tells the newspaper, 'He's got his eyes on his next project and wants Margot to be his leading lady. Tom and Margot made 'tentative plans' to meet up and discuss the project when they return to Los Angeles,
