Playlist;BEN VAUGHN “Too sensitive for this world” (Vaughn sings Vaughn vol. 2, 2007)BEN VAUGHN “In my own reality” (The world of Ben Vaughn, 2022)THE MORELLS “You’re gonna hurt yourself” (You’re gonna hurt yourself, 2024)BEN VAUGHN “The man who has everything” (Dressed in black, 1990)BEN VAUGHN COMBO “Sleepless nights” (The many moods of Ben vaughn, 1986)BEN VAUGHN “Heavy machinery” (Rambler 65, 1995)BEN VAUGHN “7 days without love” (Rambler 65, 1995)BEN VAUGHN “Miss me when I’m gone” (Texas road trip, 2014)BEN VAUGHN “Six by six” (Texas road trip, 2014)BEN VAUGHN and KIM FOWLEY “Kings of saturday night” (Kings of Saturday night, 1995)ALAN VEGA, ALEX CHILTON and BEN VAUGHN “Candy man” (Cubist blues, 1996)BEN VAUGHN COMBO “Vibrato in the grotto” (single, 1985)BEN VAUGHN “Bushfire” (Designs in music, 2006)THE BEN VAUGHN QUINTET “Jukebox jukebox” (Five by five EP, 2015)BEN VAUGHN “Darlene” (Directo en El Sótano)BEN VAUGHN “Google translate” (Directo en El Sótano)BEN VAUGHN “Clothes don’t make the man” (Beautiful thing, 1987)Escuchar audio

Born in Mount Ephraim, New Jersey, Vaughn grew up in Collingswood, New Jersey, outside Philadelphia.[2][3] At age 6, his uncle gave him a Duane Eddy record and forever changed his life. He started playing the drums in a garage band when he was 12, then transitioned to the guitar. After school, he would go to a local department store, where he would borrow the guitars and practice over chord sheets.[4] He attended Audubon High School.[1]In 1983, he formed the Ben Vaughn Combo. The band was together for five years, releasing two albums and touring the U.S. several times. They received rave reviews in Rolling Stone and People magazines as well as video airplay on MTV. The attention inspired Marshall Crenshaw to record Vaughn's "I'm Sorry (But So Is Brenda Lee)" for his Downtown album. Vaughn embarked on a solo career in 1988, recording several critically acclaimed albums, touring extensively in Europe and the U.S., and receiving more MTV exposure. During that period he produced three records for the Elektra Records American Explorer series (Memphis rockabilly legend Charlie Feathers, Muscle Shoals country soul singer Arthur Alexander) and recorded "Cubist Blues" a collaboration with Alan Vega and Alex Chilton. He also scored two films (Favorite Mopar and Wild Girl's Go-Go Rama), as well as appeared as a frequent guest commentator on nationally syndicated radio shows Fresh Air and World Cafe. In 1995, Vaughn moved to L.A. and released "Instrumental Stylings," an album of instrumentals in a variety of styles. A guest appearance on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" led directly to being hired as the composer for the hit TV sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. That '70s Show soon followed, and for the next ten years, Vaughn would provide music for a dozen other TV shows and pilots (Men Behaving Badly, Normal, Ohio, Grounded for Life). He also provided scores for several films (Psycho Beach Party, The Independent, Scorpion Spring) and continued producing records (Ween, Los Straitjackets, Mark Olson of the Jayhawks, Nancy Sinatra, and the Swingers soundtrack CD). Ben Vaughn On Zig At The Gig Ben Vaughn grew up in the Philadelphia area on the New Jersey side of the river. At age 6, his uncle gave him a Duane Eddy record and forever changed his life. In 1983, he formed the Ben Vaughn Combo. The band was together five years, releasing two albums and touring the U.S. several times. They received rave reviews in Rolling Stone and People magazine and video airplay on MTV. The attention inspired Marshall Crenshaw to record Ben's "I'm Sorry (But So Is Brenda Lee)" for his "Downtown" album. Ben embarked on a solo career in 1988, recording several critically acclaimed albums, touring extensively in Europe and the U.S. and receiving more MTV exposure. During that period he produced three records for the Elektra Records American Explorer series (Memphis rockabilly legend Charlie Feathers, Muscle Shoals country soul singer Arthur Alexander) and recorded "Cubist Blues," a collaboration with Alan Vega and Alex Chilton. He also scored two films ("Favorite Mopar" and "Wild Girl's Go-Go Rama"), as well as appearing as a frequent guest commentator on nationally syndicated radio shows “Fresh Air” and "World Cafe." In 1995, Ben moved to L.A. and released "Instrumental Stylings," an album of instrumentals in a variety of styles. A guest appearance on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" led directly to being hired as the composer for the hit TV sitcom "3rd Rock From The Sun." "That 70s Show" soon followed, and for the next ten years Ben would provide award-winning music for a dozen other TV shows and pilots ("Men Behaving Badly," "Normal, Ohio," "Grounded For Life"). He also provided scores for several films ("Psycho Beach Party," "The Independent," "Scorpion Spring") and continued producing records (Ween, Los Straitjackets, Mark Olson of the Jayhawks, Nancy Sinatra, and the "Swingers" soundtrack CD). Somehow Ben found time to create the legendary "Rambler '65." Recorded entirely in his car, this much-publicized album (and subsequent short film) is still considered by many to be a classic document of a man and his dream. Since then, Ben has released “Designs In Music," “Vaughn Sings Vaughn Vols. 1-3,” “Texas Road Trip” (recorded in Austin, Texas with Doug Sahm's band) , "Five By Five" and "Piece de Resistance" by the Ben Vaughn Quintet and the solo acoustic album, “Imitation Wood Grain And Other Folk Songs.” Add to that an Italian dance hit (a DJ re-mix of “Hey Romeo”), airplay of “Jerry Lewis in France” on Bob Dylan's radio show (complete with Dylan's recitation of Ben's resume), and two recent tours in France and you're looking at what continues to be a very interesting career. Occasionally, Ben takes a break from his syndicated radio show (“The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn”) to perform live in the US and Europe. The dates are randomly planned so catch him while you can! This week on Transmissions: producer, television music maker, radio host, and overall interesting guy Ben Vaughn. His new album is called The World of Ben Vaughn. It was released physically on vinyl back on Record Store Day and digitally earlier this month. Rooted in gentle strums, much of its sweetly traditional songcraft was recorded out in Vaughn's Relay Shack studio in the Mojave Desert, and it echoes the most rustic of selections he plays on his great radio show The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn. Ben's produced albums by Arthur Alexander, Nancy Sinatra, Charlie Feathers, and more—as well as collaborating with Alex Chilton and Alan Vega. For this episode, we spoke about the new album, his work as a Hollywood television music maker, producing Ween's irreverent cult classic 12 Golden Country Greats and much more. Thanks for listening to the show. If you enjoyed this program, please consider leaving a rating or review. Transmissions is part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network.
He’s known for his work scoring music for hit TV shows “That 70s Show” and “3rd Rock from the Sun,” his records with Alan Vega, Alex Chilton, Charlie Feathers, and Nancy Sinatra, his long-running syndicated radio show, “The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn,” and a 40-year career as a solo artist. With a new solo record, “The World of Ben Vaughn,” coming out, Ben drops in to catch up with the Troubled Men before his tour of Spain. Apparently the rain there falls mainly on the plain. Topics include a Jazz Fest recap, a Daniel Lanois set, triangle sandwiches, porch parties, the Chili Peppers, the heat, WEVL, WXPN, a Big Star story, “Like Flies On Sherbet,” “Cubist Blues,” Suicide, “Rambler ’65,” a record collection, early dance bands, Duane Eddy, early recording, disgusting percussion, Roland Janes, moving to L.A., Pulp Fiction, surf guitar, session work, John Lithgow, the Mojave Desert, Tom Haden, Dave Catching, Dash Rip Rock, Sinatra’s “Watertown,” Bob Gaudio, the Four Seasons, and much more. “New Jersey Rock and Roll” The New Jersey born Ben Vaughn has put out close to twenty albums, including personal favorites of mine like Beautiful Thing, Mood Swings and Ben Vaughn Blows Your Mind. Aside from his own records, Vaughn has produced records by Ween, Los Straitjackets, Nancy Sinatra, and Charlie Feathers, had his songs covered by everyone from Marshall Crenshaw to Deer Tick and collaborated with the likes of Alex Chilton, Alan Vega, and Rodney Crowell. Vaughn loves punk and surf and rockabilly and folk and country and the blues, which explains the versatility of his collaborations. And if that wasn't an impressive enough resume, let's add these two career highlights: he penned the themes for both Third Rock From The Sun and That 70's Show. Oh, and he hosts the radio show The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn. Let's not forget that because it's one of the best radio shows out there. His new album The World Of Ben Vaughn not only demonstrates his musical dexterity, it also showcases his brilliance as a songwriter—filled with humor, wisdom and grace, Vaughn's work is always soulful, introspective and impossible to resist. Tav Falco in conversation with David Eastaugh Impressed by a 1978 performance of Falco's at The Orpheum in Memphis that culminated in the chainsawing of a guitar, Alex Chiltonteamed with him. They developed the self-styled "art damage" band, Tav Falco's Panther Burns. The group recorded a first album for Rough Trade at Ardent Studios in Memphis. Their previous 1980 session for the label at Phillips Recording was temporarily shelved (it was later re-released in 1992 on Marilyn Records as The Unreleased Sessions). Falco devoted some of his musical career highlighting great traditional artists who had not gained media attention. He introduced their work to his audiences and to writers following his work by performing Panther Burns shows on billings with these artists, recording interpretations of their songs, and occasionally collaborating with some of them on projects for small record labels he's been associated with, such as Au Go Go and New Rose. Among these artists were blueswoman Jessie Mae Hemphill and rockabilly pioneer Charlie Feathers. Falco and Lux Interior of The Cramps worked on the photography and liner notes, respectively, for the 1982 Honky Tonk Man album by Feathers. Both younger vocalists had been influenced by Feathers' energetic, hiccup-styled vocals of the 1950s. Falco has invited such musicians as Cordell Jackson, R. L. Burnside, Mose Vinson, and Van Zula Hunt to perform at this Panther Burns concerts. Falco has released numerous Panther Burns albums on small international indie labels. He also has co-released some recordings by his band and other Memphis-area artists on his own Frenzi label. Falco has appeared as an actor with small parts in films such as Great Balls of Fire! (1989 - USA), The Big Post Office Robbery (1992 - Hungary), Highway 61 (1991 - Canada), Downtown 81 (2001 - USA), and Wayne County Rambling (2002 - USA). Long a student of the tango under European and Argentine instructors, he appeared in Dans Le Rouge du Couchant (2003 - France) as a tango dancer, and choreographed his part in the film. He has appeared in several short films, most of which he produced and in some cases served as the filmmaker. These have been shown in underground arts venues such as The Horse Hospital in London. In 2003 six of Falco's short films were accepted and archived into the permanent collection of the Cinémathèque Française in Paris. The short films archived are Love's Last Warning(1996), Born Too Late (1993), Helene of Memphis (1991), Memphis Beat (1989), Shadetree Mechanic (1986), and 71 Salvage (1971). A selection of Falco's short films were shown in a retrospective at the Cinémathèque Française in 2006. His first feature film, Urania Descending, was announced in 2014, having been completed the prior year. Tav Falco has collaborated with Erik Morse, an American underground author, rock writer and journalist, on a two volume encyclopedic history and psychogeography of the city of Memphis, Tennessee, entitled MONDO MEMPHIS. Falco's book, Ghosts Behind The Sun/Mondo Memphis: Volume 1, is a study of Memphis beginning with the Civil War up to more recent autobiographical accounts set in the city. Morse's Bluff City Underground/Mondo Memphis: Volume 2 roman noir follows a West Coast graduate student and his encounters with a Memphis secret society. They were published by Creation Books; a paperback edition of Falco's volume was published in November 2011. Falco has said his main artistic purpose is "to stir up the dark waters of the unconscious." Falco has released more than nine album recordings.Conjurations was released in 2011 on a German label, Stag-O-Lee, and a French label, Bang! Records, followed by an American CD release on the Cosmodelic label in October 2011. A live album, Live In London, was released on Stag-O-Lee in 2012. In 2014, Falco compiled a double album of some of his favorite tracks from his music collection, Tav Falco's Wild & Exotic World of Musical Obscurities, released on Stag-o-Lee Records. The album set included a Panther Burns song, "Real Cool Trash", and liner notes by Falco. In 2015, Falco's first book of photography, a collection of images of the gothic South called Iconography of Chance: 99 Photographs of the Evanescent South, was published by Elsinore and distributed by University of Chicago Press. The same year, he toured with Panther Burns and released another album, Command Performance. Tav's most recent studio album is Cabaret of Daggers, released by ORG Music in November 2018.

In this episode, Robert tells Nate some of his favorite stories about the undersung musical legends of his home town of Memphis, including chewing tobacco with rockabilly legend Charlie Feathers, soul legend James Carr’s tragic tale of mental transubstantiation, the singer more frightening than Jerry Lee Lewis, the Lead Belly album that changed his life, and Jeff Buckley’s final days. Thanks for listening. Next time, Nate will be back with author Elijah Wald to discuss the real story of Robert Johnston, the blues legend in his proper context.
You may know Ben Vaughn as a producer of artists such as Los Straightjackets, Charlie Feathers, Ween, or the one-off collaboration between Big Star’s Alex Chilton and Suicide’s Alan Vega, which he talks about in the episode of Berklee Online’s Music Is My Life podcast. Ben Vaughn got his start as the leader of a group called the Ben Vaughn Combo in the 1980s, and got a lot of attention from mainstream press, and inspired favorable cover versions of his tunes by the likes of Marshall Crenshaw, the Plimsouls, Man or Astroman, and more. His big break in the music industry came when he moved out to LA and quickly got a job as a composer for the show “Third Rock from the Sun,” which he composed the theme for. Success on that show led to a gig in the same role on “That 70s Show,” and numerous other shows. He has now comfortably resumed a solo career, and he also hosts a radio show on WXPN in Philly.
Set 1: Diggin' into the 45 vault for Tony Jackson & the Vibrations with "Fortune Teller" with stellar guitar work from Paul Pilnick...why isn't he in the R&R Hall of Shame?....Charlie Feathers [another candidate if you ask moi….maybe the requirement is a full set of teeth?] singin' his tale of a "Wild wild party" which was released on a 7" slab o wax in 1961 / Memphis Records. Mickey Most doesn't want to miss the 45 rpm party but even if he does "It's Alright" w/ Sir James Page on guitar...Fairport breaks the 45 spell with a cut from their first LP with "Time will show the wiser"...Ian McDonald aka Ian Mathews on lead vocals and none other than Judy Dyble on background vocals...great guitar work from Richard Thompson... Set 2: The Bloos Magoos on 45 rpm..."So I'm wrong and you are right"...after this [their 1st 45] they changed their name to The Blues Magoos. The Blue Things with a DRR staple "Orange rooftops of your mind" on a 45 from RCA...Killer! The Onion Radio News checks in with their weekly report on prison food....And speaking of food....Papa Link Davis on a small label out of Texas with "Rice and Gravy Boogie" takes us to The Nazz "Under the Ice" a 45 rpm on the SGC label 1968. Set 3: A bunch of Browns.... Roy Brown w/ the R&R Trio on a 45 / Imperial Records 1958...."Hip shakin' baby"...Roy never sounded better! He doesn't need more cowbell he needs more REVERB!....Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies check in with an instro-mental "Takin' Off" / Decca 1935. Brown is considered the architect of western swing predating Bob Wills by a few years. In fact Wills got his start in one of Milton's early bands...the world would know more about Milton Brown had he not died in a car crash in 1935 driving his "date" home. The Steel guitar is played by one of the greatest of all time Bob Dunn who is credited with the first amplified steel guitar ever recorded! Phil Brown keeps the ball "Rollin' and tumblin" off his first record called Cruel Inventions from 2002...I dig Phil a lot....James Brown with "It's a new day [Let a man come in" from 1970 finishing out the last proper set of music for the evening..... We finish out the festivities with one of the great German bands of the last 50 years...CAN. "She brings the rain" is the b-side of their 2nd single and a great one at that...Earl Jean [McCrea] with the original recording of "I'm into something good" which was a big hit for Herman's Hermits....and taking us to the finish line is a really good Canadian band called Mother Earth...their cover of Soul Sacrifice is essential! That's if for this week.....so if the good lord's willin' and the creek don't rise we'll be back at the Purple Grotto with another DRR Show next week....stay smooooth…...

This week, there's a bundle of varied works to get through from all genres and styles. First up, Desmond and Duane review a documentary about competitive tickling championships, but it's about so much more in Tickled. Rich the Monster Movie Kid dives headfirst into the 1950s homage-laden Mihmiverse in his review of Christopher R. Mihm's House of Ghosts. Then Desmond goes solo on two novels: Robert Dean's nihilistic western The Red Seven and James Waltzer's Hitchcockian thriller Of Sound Mind. Of course, there are tunes as well: "Can't Hardly Stand It" by Charlie Feathers, "NegativeCreep" by Machine Head, "Mr. Crowley" by Ozzy Osbourne, "Gunslinger" by Avenged Sevenfold, and "Devil Lurks on the Road" by Tiger Army.
