Send a textBack in 2022, I talked with Ben Vaughn, whose music and radio show I've been a fan of for years. Ben has enjoyed a great career as a performer, songwriter, composer for film and TV, and record producer. He's produced records by Ween, Arthur Alexander, and Charlie Feathers, and also collaborated with Alan Vega, Alex Chilton and Los Straitjackets. His songs have also been recorded by artists including Marshall Crenshaw, The Morells, and Deer Tick. Needless to say, Ben Vaughn has encountered some colorful characters in his musical journey. His friend Laura Pochodylo, who works for Sun Records in Nashville, wrote the names of those colorful characters down and placed them in a hat. Names like Jonathan Richman, Arthur Alexander, Willie Nelson, Nancy Sinatra and more. So, what do they do with those names? Laura selects a few at random and Ben relives the stories—no pre-planning, no filter —just telling it like it was, straight from the hat. The new podcast is called, of course, Straight from the Hat and on today's episode of Frets, I happily welcome…the return of Ben Vaughn.Songs featured in this episode:“Quote Unquote” by Ben Vaughn“Asking for a Friend” by Ben Vaughn“My Reservation's Been Confirmed” – a Herman's Hermits song (one of my favorites) covered by Ben and written by Charles Silverman, Derek Leckenby and Keith HopwoodListen to Straight From the Hat here.Find music by Ben Vaughn here.Save on Certified Pre-Owned ElectronicsPlug has great prices on refurbished electronics. "Straight From The Hat" The New Jersey born Ben Vaughn has put out close to twenty albums, including personal favorites of mine like Beautiful Thing, Mood Swings and Ben Vaughn Blows Your Mind. Aside from his own records, Vaughn has produced records by Ween, Los Straitjackets, Nancy Sinatra, and Charlie Feathers, had his songs covered by everyone from Marshall Crenshaw to Deer Tick and collaborated with the likes of Alex Chilton, Alan Vega, and Rodney Crowell. Vaughn loves punk and surf and rockabilly and folk and country and the blues, which explains the versatility of his collaborations. And if that wasn't an impressive enough resume, let's add these two career highlights: he penned the themes for both Third Rock From The Sun and That 70's Show. Oh, and he hosts the fabulous radio show The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn. Vaughn's discography demonstrates his musical dexterity, it also showcases his brilliance as a songwriter—filled with humor, wisdom and grace, Vaughn's work is always soulful, introspective and impossible to resist. But here's the thing about Ben Vaughn--he loves music. Whether it's noise rock or doo wop, he just loves taking it all in. And that open mindedness has gotten him in a lot of rooms with a lot of people and it's granted him access to a wealth of experiences. And those experiences can now be heard on Vaughn's bi-coastal, cross-generational music history podcast titled Straight From The Hat With Ben Vaughn. Along with co-host Laura Pochodylo (from Sun Records) on the program Ben shares stories about musicians, producers, and all the various characters from his career, with names drawn directly from a hat. www.benvaughn.org Instagram: @benvaughnmusic www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenbooks.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast: Instagram + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Check Playlist This episode of The Five Count featured an exclusive interview with musician Ben Vaughn. Known for songs like I’m Sorry (But So Is Brenda Lee) and Jerry Lewis in France, Ben has been making music for more than 40 years. He also composed music for TV shows like That ’70s Show, 3rd Rock from the Sun and Grounded for Life. During the show he discussed how started working in Hollywood, his time working with the band Ween, and his new podcast Straight from the Hat with Ben Vaughn. Get it wherever you find your favorite podcasts! During the rest of the show we discussed which bars are the best to bring children to for the Super Bowl, bragged about how many listeners we hypothetically could have, and tried to find a good deal on a used bean bag chair. We are moving on for Hitchcock month and jumping a bit ahead chronologically, with 1948's, Rope. Loosely based on the crime of Leopold and Loeb, Rope tells the direct aftermath of the murder of a young man by his supposed friends and the psychological lengths the killers will take to feel superior. Co-starring Jimmy Stewart, this is one of Hitch's most overlooked but possibly best films. Friends, Lovers, Listeners…It's not Wednesday, it's not hump day but it IS Sex on the Peach day - brought to you here on this very special Friday because it is indeed…Halloween, and one thing we're clearly all STILL scared of as a society…is sex — or at least scared of talking about it. It's exhausting. And yet, it's also kind of funny — because the more we avoid talking about sex, the weirder it gets. We're like a nation of people collectively agreeing to never read the manual on the thing we use most often. But since it's Halloween — the one time of year we actually celebrate fear — I thought we'd face this particular demon head-on. Why does sex — or even saying the word sex — still make so many of us feel uncomfortable? Grab your pumpkin spice lube and let's get into it...here are The Ten Terrifying Truths of Sex.Sex On The Peach is a completely inclusive, open, judgement free zone. However you identify - both in your gender and sexuality, whatever race, age, size, ability, religion you are - everyone is welcome here, and I hope that at some point in an episode we will touch on something you can relate to and resonate with. Please like, follow, share, review and subscribe to stay in the loop of all future episodes, and you can also follow me on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube @sexonthepeachcast. The Rotten Pumpkin ManAfter the Great Darkness of 1999, many towns that were once occupied were discovered abandoned. One such town, Harvest Creek, is located just outside the borders of Autumn City. One of the many artifacts discovered after the hamlet's apparent desertion was a journal located in one of the empty residence. The small book, which contained an account of a supposed mass murder at the hands of a strange folklore figure, became infamous for its similarities to Autumn City's own killer - Jack Lantern. Some have speculated that Jack Lantern was once a citizen of the small town, while others believe that the killer based his haunting persona on the antagonist of the bloody tale. Buenas tardes, amigos, and happy Hallo-Ween, my good friends. It took us way, way too long to get the bright idea to devote our annual All Hallow's Eve episode to the Brothers Ween, but now that we have, it seems appropriate to discuss 1994's Chocolate and Cheese, an album where Deaner and Gener try on a whole bunch of different musical costumes. While C&C isn't their major-label debut, it's the first album they produced in a major-label fashion, and the songs cover a lot of stylistic ground, including Tom Jones Vegas rockabilly lounge, kaleidoscopic Prince psychedelia, a sweeping Morricone murder ballad, smooth Philly soul, and a few songs that completely defy categorization. While this album is often ranked behind powerhouse Ween classics like The Mollusk and Quebec, many of its songs have gone on to become live standards, and there's an argument to be made that it formed the bedrock of the band's musical legacy. So join John, Mike, Phil, and Rich as they make a return pilgrimage to the shrine of the mighty Boognish, and remember: don't believe the florist when he tells you that the roses are free.Cohosts: Complete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/167-ween-chocolate-and-cheese-1995Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

The story so far: After a year and a half underground, we've made it to the best time of the year! Sadly, we've hit the end of Sellout October 2025! During October, we watch mainstream horror movies that people have heard of before. And after trick-or-mole-treating around Mole City, we were gifted a film as a little treat, and it turned out to be The Monster Squad from 1987! It's a first time watch for one of us (can you guess who?!), and we bask in the glory of Stan Winston's amazing costumes, discuss the constant necessity of virgins in horror, talk way too much about foreskin, and just shower this movie with love! As Sellout October comes to an end, we hope you all have the spookiest of Halloweens!!!Leave us a 30 second voicemail and if we like it we'll play it on the show: (949) 4-STABBY (949-478-2229)Next movie announced every Wednesday. I'm super excited to have @scottymetz on the show for this week's episode. Scott's stellar guitar work has been the hallmark of his 25-year career, and he's now grown permanent roots with his project (and lifelong dream) @lamp_trio along with bandmates @russlawton and @raypaczkowski (both of Trey Anastasio Band). LaMP's latest album, “One Of Us” is out there now for your listening pleasure; it's a spectacular work of musical art!! Scott brings his excitement, enthusiasm, curiosity and his special brand of enduring authenticity to the show, and I couldn't be happier to share this special interview with all of you. Scott talks to me about his life of “happy accidents;” a series of life-defining moments that he expresses with genuine gratitude and surprise. From a punk rock kid to exploring gypsy jazz, to diving into the depths of improvisation, to his early roots and connection with WEEN, Scott has seen and experienced tons of twists and turns, and he's here to share it all.================================Chapters00:00 Episode Intro with Host Josh Rosenberg03:45 Introducing Scott Metzger05:56 The New LAMP Album and Festival Experiences 09:57 Travel Challenges and Touring Life 13:16 Managing Expectations in Music and Life 16:10 Creating Accessible Instrumental Music 21:02 Musical Values and Artistic Integrity 24:39 The Heart of LAMP: Drumming and Melodies 25:37 Early Musical Influences and Experiences 31:08 The Spirit of Rock and Roll 31:35 AI and Live Music: A Candid Discussion 33:16 From Punk Rock to Jam Bands: A Musical Journey 35:46 Meeting Phish: A Turning Point 37:12 The Birth of a Band: Joining Phish's Legacy 40:31 Growth Through Improvisation: The JRad Experience 42:27 The Importance of Space in Music 44:34 Finding Your Voice: A Journey of Self-Discovery 46:15 Preparation Meets Opportunity: The Music Career Path 52:47 Artistic Focus: Following the Musical Thread 55:22 The Essence of Authenticity 56:48 Finding Balance in Creativity 59:57 Exploring Musical Dynamics 1:02:20 The Role of Instruments in Expression 1:05:05 Transitioning Through Personal Change 1:08:39 The Journey to Sobriety 1:15:01 Embracing Growth and Change1:21:50 Episode Wrap Up with Host Josh Rosenberg===================================For more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer
