Today I had the opportunity to chat with the one and only Ann Harada; brilliant, golden-voiced, and hilarious in all she does! A graduate of Brown University, Ann made her broadway debut in David Henry Hwang's "M. Butterfly," and boasts a resume overflowing with Broadway and regional credits, including original companies of "9-5," "Seussical," "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella," and revivals of "Into the Woods," and "Les Miserables." But it is arguably her iconic performance as Christmas Eve in "Avenue Q" for which Harada is most lauded - including an Outer Critics Circle Award. Television audiences know her from "Smash" and of course her hysterical turn as Mayor Menlove's wife in "Schmigadoon" and in Season 2, Madam Frau in "Schmicago." Have a seat and listen as we reminisce and gab about her extraordinary career and inspirations.

Ali Stroker is a trailblazing actor and advocate who joined the Little Kids, Big Hearts podcast as a guest Qook-a-lacka on our episode focused on inclusion. Today, Ali is back — out of character, as her amazing self — to talk with LKBH Host Todd Loyd about her own experiences with disability and inclusion. ❤️ She reflects on what Scarlett and Zach said on the episode: "When I hear Scarlett talking about horseback riding: It felt like she was explaining something that was so normal. And that, to me, is progress."❤️ She shares her own personal motto — Turning Limitations into Opportunities: "It can apply to somebody with a disability or not because as human beings, we have limitations. It's part of existing in the world." ❤️ She talks about being a mom with a disability — and how being a mom in a wheelchair affects her parenting and her son's independence. ❤️ She talks about the power of "inclusive playgrounds." "I never had one inclusive playground growing up, and to this day, I still go to the playground and I have this like funny feeling in my stomach because it was a place of confusion and shame and frustration for me as a child ... Every kid deserves that freedom and that ability to play in an outdoor space with their friends."❤️ She talks about a moment when she was in 1st grade and her PE teachers included her in a lesson on "how to skip," which changed her life. "Thirty-one years later, I still remember it because it felt like I was included and someone had taken a little bit of time to get creative and make me feel like I was learning a new school too, and that I could be a part of the group in moving...And that meant everything to me, everything!" ❤️ She talked about her children's book "Ali and the Sea Stars," which was based on her own experience as a six year old being introduced to musical theater by her neighbor on the Jersey Shore. "It basically set my entire life journey of becoming a musical theater and actress and everything that I do now." ❤️ She shares advice for kids with disabilities who want to try something new that hasn't been done before. Ali Stroker is a Tony Award winner for her role as ‘Ado Annie' in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! She made history as the first actor in a wheelchair to appear on Broadway in Deaf West's acclaimed revival of Spring Awakening and the first actor in a wheelchair to win a Tony. She was a series regular on the Netflix series, Echoes, and starred in the Lifetime holiday film, Christmas Ever After. Ali recurred in the final season of Netflix's Ozark and in Hulu's Only Murders in the Building. She co-wrote the novel, The Chance to Fly and its sequel, Cut Loose!; and she wrote the children's book, Ali and the Sea Stars. She was recently seen opposite Matthew Broderick in Babbitt at Shakespeare Theatre Company in DC and played 'Lady Anne' in the Shakespeare in the Park production of Richard III. She's performed her one woman show all over the country. On this kidventure episode, two kids — Scarlett and Zach — talk about their disabilities and share their experiences with inclusion (on inclusive playgrounds and in other contexts). As Scarlett explains, inclusion "means that everybody can play, no matter your disability or how you walk or how you roll or anything like that."After a chat on Earth, the kids and Todd travel on the colors of the rainbow to the Land of Qook-a-lackas, where they meet a Qook-a-lacka friend, Quinnly, who is trying to figure out how the Qook-a-lackas and their new neighbors, the Link-a-doos, can play TOGETHER. The Qook-a-lacka's favorite sport, Quibble, is played on the ground with a big ball — while the Link-a-doos' favorite sport, Loop-a-launch, is played in the sky with a little bouncy ball. The kids and Todd help Quinnly to brainstorm a whole new game (Quibble Launch!), which has special rules and a two tier playing field that is perfect for the new neighbors to play together!Little Kids, Big Hearts was THRILLED to be joined on this episode by guest star Ali Stroker, who plays the role of Quinnly. Justin Welby has given his first interview, since he resigned as Archbishop of Canterbury because of a failure to act over the serial abuser John Smyth. Dr Welby admits in an interview with the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg he 'got it wrong' because he was 'overwhelmed' by the scale of the problem. However, he says clearly that as Archbishop, there are 'no excuses'. The Sunday programme speaks to theologian and journalist Andrew Graystone who battled for years to bring the truth of John Smyth's crimes to light.Thousands of people have died in Myanmar and more have been injured following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that was also felt in neighbouring countries. Hundreds of people are believed to be trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings - including at least 50 construction workers who are unaccounted for after a high-rise was flattened by the earthquake in Bangkok. We get an update from BBC Correspondent Nick Marsh, who's in Bangkok, and discuss the relief efforts underway with Stefano Disperati who is delivering humanitarian programmes funded by the British NGO Muslim Aid.60 years ago this week, a whirling Julie Andrews burst onto our cinema screens in the UK and claimed her place in cinema history. The Sound of Music became an historic box office smash and won 5 Oscars including best picture. The portrayal of convent life, the religious music and spiritual themes were all part of its charm. But few might know that was because of the real life religious sisters who advised Rodgers and Hammerstein - the famous duo who wrote it. So who were they and how did they become the film's secret weapon? Julie Etchingham speaks to Ian Bradley, Emeritus Professor of Cultural and Spiritual History at St Andrew's University - he's writing a book on the theology of musical theatre, due out this year.Presenter: Julie Etchingham Producers: Bara'atu Ibrahim & Saba Zaman Production Coordinator: Liz Poole Studio Managers: Helen Williams & George Willis Editor: Chloe Walker

The Rodgers and Hammerstein movie musical is celebrating its 60th Anniversary. This has been a very big movie in Rob's family so we brought back his Dad, Fred Lundquist, to talk about the countless times he's seen it. We had a great time and hope you enjoy!
This week a light-hearted (and therefore much-needed!) tribute to the marvelous Felicia Weathers, who, in the midst of her burgeoning operatic career in the late 1960s, made two LPs of Schlagermusik, 1968's Liebe Love L'amour (which also sports the best record cover in the history of the LP!) and, the following year, Wunderbar ist die Welt. Both of these were arranged and conducted by one Harold M. Kirschstein, referred to in the liner notes as an important conductor and arranger. Imagine my surprise when, upon doing a little research, I discovered that this person was better known in his native United States as Henri René, whom I knew from his work with Eartha Kitt in the early days of her recording career. His arrangements are, of course, predictably delightful. Amid all her other successes, Felicia Weathers (like Maria Ewing a generation later) found her greatest fame performing the title role of Richard Strauss's Salome. This role may have put strain on her voice and shortened her career, but in the late 1960s her voice, as captured on these recordings, was a beguilingly beautiful instrument. She also displays a fine interpretive approach, keen linguistic sense, and vital communicative powers to these songs, which feature some of my favorite melodies ever, including those written by Georges Auric, Jimmy Webb, Harold Arlen, Henry Mancini, Jean-Paul Egide Martini, Oscar Straus, and Friedrich Hollaender. I supplement these delicious selections with two Rodgers and Hammerstein medleys from Weathers' 1969 album of songs from musicals, Hello, Young Lovers, which also features duets with the superb African American baritone William Ray, who was also based in Europe during those years. Enjoy this delicious, if brief, escape from reality! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.
Rodgers and Hammerstein, George Gershwin, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein: these are just a few names of composers and lyricists who changed the landscape and at times defined an entire era of Broadway. But what of the women who were writing shows at the same time? Why have some stories been included in the history books and others left out?In today's episode I'll be discussing these questions and more with Jennifer Ashley Tepper, a musical theater historian and producer and author of the book Women Writing Musicals: The Legacy that the History Books Left Out. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Oscar Hammerstein II was Broadway's greatest lyricist. He was responsible for the book and lyrics to so many of the musicals that created the Golden Era of Broadway. With Richard Rogers he wrote “The King And I”, “Oklahoma”, “The Sound Of Music”, “Carousel”, “South Pacific” and “Flower Drum Song”. With Jerome Kern he wrote “Show Boat”. He co-wrote 850 songs, and won 8 Tony Awards and 2 Oscars. After he passed in 1960 he received a unique Broadway honor - all the lights on Broadway were turned off for 3 minutes. My guest is Jessie Barth, author and music educator, who is a Hammerstein expert. In honor of Oscar my featured song is John Coltrane's exquisite version of “My Favorite Things” from The Sound Of Music. ---------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries! For more information and other episodes of the podcast click here. Drama students at Bernice McNaughton High School are performing Rodger and Hammerstein's Cinderella next month.
Episode 308: For country singer Kaitlin Butts, 2023 was very good and 2024 was even better, with an Americana Award nomination, praise in Rolling Stone magazine, and festival dates she'd been dreaming of. Her reputation and acclaim grew on the strength of her feisty stage temperament, her bold and cutting voice, and her fearless songs. Raised in Oklahoma on theater and country music, the iconic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical set in her state became a touchstone. Years later, she'd take the bold step of writing and recording a concept album reacting to and enlarging on the themes of the show. It's called Roadrunner!, and it was among the most impactful albums in Americana and country music last year.
Novelist and playwright Edna Ferber (1885-1968) lived a wondrous life: residing in Manhattan as a member of the famed Algonquin Round Table, writing a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel (So Big), and producing works that Hollywood turned into twentieth-century classics, including the Kern & Hammerstein musical Show Boat and George Stevens's Giant, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean. Along the way, she also served as a caretaker and mentor for her grandniece, who was wowed by her great aunt's style, presence, and celebrity connections. In this episode, Jacke talks to Julie Gilbert, that little girl who grew up to become a writer herself, about her new book Giant Love: Edna Ferber, Her Best-Selling Novel of Texas, and the Making of a Classic American Film. PLUS Jacke talks to Yiddish literature expert Jessica Kirzane about her choice for the last book she will ever read. Join Chad and Acefield Retro for Wrestling Tonight, your go-to source for the latest in professional wrestling news. This weekend, TNA Genesis and GCW's The People vs. GCW promise to deliver a mix of exciting and uncertain moments for fans. TNA Genesis features some compelling matchups, including Nic Nemeth defending the TNA World Championship against Joe Hendry and Josh Alexander facing Mike Santana in an I Quit match. The Hardys return to defend the TNA Tag Team Titles against The Rascalz, and Rosemary challenges Masha Slamovich in a Clockwork Orange House of Fun match. The hope now is that WWE, in light of their recent partnership, will send some of their bigger names over to TNA to truly strengthen this cross-promotional effort and elevate the brand further. Meanwhile, GCW's The People vs. GCW at the Hammerstein Ballroom is set to provide a chaotic and thrilling atmosphere for fans. Mance Warner will defend the GCW Championship, and Effy faces Allie Katch in a match that will decide who gets a shot at the title. A DLC match for the Extreme and Ultraviolent titles promises high stakes and wild action, featuring names like Maki Itoh, Matt Tremont, John Wayne Murdoch, ensuring that fans who love hardcore wrestling won't be disappointed. In a significant development, WWE and TNA's newly announced multi-year partnership is stirring excitement for potential cross-promotional events. While TNA stars like Jordynne Grace and Joe Hendry have appeared on WWE programming, there's a sense that WWE's involvement has been one-sided so far, with TNA yet to see much in the way of reciprocation from WWE in terms of big-name talent exchanges. For the partnership to reach its full potential, many hope WWE will send some of its top stars to TNA to further elevate both promotions. Elsewhere in the wrestling world, Corey Graves' absence from NXT has sparked questions about his future with WWE, while Chelsea Green has been vocal about the positive changes in WWE's women's division under Triple H's leadership. AEW has had its own share of updates, with Samoa Joe making his long-awaited return after six months, and Megan Bayne debuting on AEW Dynamite. Action Bronson, however, has expressed frustration with his AEW booking, and The Acclaimed officially split, signaling the end of one of AEW's most popular factions. The independent scene is also buzzing, as Swerve Strickland is set to return to Defy Wrestling for its 100th anniversary show in Seattle. Meanwhile, the wrestling world is mourning the loss of WWE Hall of Famer and legendary MLB announcer Bob Uecker, who passed away at the age of 90. Whether it's the promising action at Genesis, the hard-hitting excitement at GCW, or the evolving WWE-TNA partnership, this weekend is shaping up to be full of significant moments. Today I present to you the extraordinarily versatile, even chameleon-like singer and actor Marni Nixon (22 February 1930 – 24 July 2016), who is no doubt best-known today as the so-called “Ghostess with the Mostest.” Born into a musical family in California, she became involved from an early age with the movies, and by a marvelous set of circumstances became The Voice for a number of Hollywood actresses not known for their singing voices. Her skill in matching the vocal and speech characteristics of each of these performers is exceptional, but she was so much more than that. She pioneered the work of many 20th century giants, including Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Charles Ives, and Anton Webern. She hosted a local Seattle children's television program called Boomerang that netted her four Emmy Awards. She performed on opera stages and concert platforms around the world. She recorded widely, everything from Mary Poppins to Pierrot Lunaire, and in the mid-1970s was the first singer to perform and record Schoenberg's cabaret songs, his so-called Brettl-Lieder, works that are now standard repertoire. Reminiscences of Marni are provided by my good friend Thomas Bagwell, currently a coach and conductor at The Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, who was a colleague and good friend of Marni Nixon's for the last 25 years of her life. This episode features a cross-section of this stunning artist's extensive recorded output, recorded over six decades, including repertoire from Webern to Rodgers and Hammerstein. In between we have examples of Nixon's performances of songs by Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Debussy, Ives, Fauré and her former husband Ernest Gold; concert and song repertoire by Villa-Lobos, Boulez, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Copland, and Gershwin; plus a few outliers, from a live performance of Korngold's Mariettas Lied to the jazzed-up exotica of Buddy Collette's Polynesia to Mr. Magoo's Mother Goose Suite, not to mention a spoonful of Mary Poppins. Overall, “It's a Jolly ‘Oliday with Marni!” Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Greg Jenner is joined in 20th-century New York by Dr Hannah Thuraisingam Robbins and comedian Desiree Burch to learn about the history of Broadway. Most of us are familiar with at least one Broadway musical, from classics like My Fair Lady and the Sound of Music to new favourites Hamilton and Wicked. In the last couple of decades, high-profile film adaptations of shows like Chicago, Cats and Les Misérables have brought musical theatre to a bigger audience than ever before. But whether or not you know your Rodgers & Hammerstein from your Lloyd Webber, the history of Broadway is perhaps more of a mystery. This episode explores all aspects of musical theatre, from its origins in the early years of the 20th century, to the ‘Golden Age' in the 50s and the rise of the megamusical in the 80s. Along the way, Greg and his guests learn about the racial and class dynamics of Broadway, uncover musical flops and triumphs, and find out exactly what ‘cheating out' is.This is a radio edit of the original podcast episode. Laura remembers her fifth grade teacher, who taught her, via Rodgers and Hammerstein's original stage musical *The Sound of Music*, that real heroes stand up against cruel regimes even when there is no way to stop it.
This is the third and final segment of my recent conversation with author Laurie Winer regarding her book Oscar Hammerstein II and the Invention of The Musical, recently released in paperback. Today our discussion centers on the second half of Hammerstein's remarkable partnership with Richard Rodgers, including the creation of their musicals South Pacific, Me And Juliet, The King And I, Pipe Dream, and The Sound Of Music. If you missed the first two parts, you may want to catch up with those before listening to this one. Laurie Winer has been a theater critic for the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times, and was a founding editor of the Los Angeles Review of Books.
