The hour opens with Chris Russell reacting to Brandon Aiyuk being spotted in Washington, D.C., and discussing whether the visit is simply a coincidence or a sign that the star wide receiver could be getting closer to joining the Commanders. The conversation then takes an unexpected turn as Cowboy B joins the discussion and sparks a lively debate about oral hygiene, leading to one of the more offbeat conversations of the day. Listeners quickly jump into the mix, calling in with their thoughts on both Aiyuk's presence in Washington and the crew's dental-care discussion. The hour wraps up with Chris reacting to comments from Commanders wide receivers coach Wes Welker, breaking down the current state of the WR room and sharing his expectations for how Washington's passing attack and receiver rotation could take shape this season.
Learning piano taught me something I was not expecting: the side lessons, the ones that seemed optional, are often where the real breakthroughs happen. In this episode, I dig into the difference between being sidetracked and intentionally pursuing side quests, and why that distinction can define your entire trajectory. Using everything from video game logic to the game of Frogger, I lay out how lateral experience, pursued with intention, builds the kind of depth that straight-line progress never can. If you have ever felt stuck waiting for the path ahead to clear, this one will reframe what moving forward actually looks like. Key Takeaways Rushing through levels to win creates pyrrhic progress where you advance without actually learning anything. A side quest is intentional skill-building that feeds your main mission. Being sidetracked is aimless movement with no mission anchoring it. You must define your main mission first, because without it you cannot evaluate whether any experience is helping or hurting you. Lateral knowledge, like the person who becomes CEO after starting in the mailroom, often builds more capability than a straight vertical climb. Experience never leaves you. No matter how much resets around you, you always re-enter with everything you have already learned. Action Steps Write down your main mission in one sentence for each key area of your life: relationships, career, and personal growth. If you cannot write it down clearly, that is the first problem to solve. Identify one skill adjacent to your current goal that you have been ignoring. Commit to exploring it this week with the specific intention of how it could strengthen your main mission. Audit where you feel stuck and ask whether you are waiting for others to move or whether you can go around them by gaining a skill, relationship, or perspective they do not have. Notable Quote You're never restarting or starting back at square one. You always start with the knowledge and experience you have.

Have you ever wondered if God is still working in the unexpected detours of life? In this powerful message from Acts 8:26-40, discover how God used a desert road, an ordinary believer, and a searching heart to accomplish something extraordinary. Desert Detours & Divine Appointments reminds us that no road is too remote, no person is beyond God's reach, and no moment is wasted when we walk in obedience to His leading. Even on the desert roads of life, with God's Word as our guide, God's Spirit as our companion, and God's will as our destination, lives can be transformed for today and for eternity. Listen to the podcast and be encouraged: what may seem like an interruption could actually be a divine appointment arranged by God Himself. Your next step of obedience could change a life forever.
The hour opens with Chris Russell explaining why the Bears' proposed stadium move makes practical sense before opening the phone lines and debating the topic with listeners. From there, Jay Paterno joins the show to discuss NIL, revenue pressures, and the long-term financial sustainability of college athletics, giving a candid look at how the economics of college sports are changing. The conversation takes a lighter turn with a discussion of Michael Jackson-inspired dance moves, and then circles back to sports and money through an unexpected detour.
This week, we discuss detours, disappointments, and the struggle to find our joy. I hope you will join me!
A whirlwind tour of automotive chaos: skepticism toward bold self-driving claims and cherry-picked safety stats, a Tesla crash into a California home, and BYD promising to cover liability when its driver-assist is used “properly.” The discussion also torches rosy “facts” from the autonomous trucking lobby, argues drunk-driving prevention tech isn't a privacy apocalypse, and flags “zero-gravity” seats as a potential safety risk. Nutrition is one of the most underestimated parts of bikepacking and ultra-distance racing. We can dial our kit, obsess over our gear, train for months — but if we're not fuelling well, none of it matters. This week, Dietician Uri Carlson is back on Detours, and this time we had a very specific agenda: Highland Trail 550 is on the horizon, and this year I'll be lining up for my first time, and I wanted to make sure I left no stone unturned. We get into carb loading — when to start and how to think about it for a multi-day race that lasts a week — resupply strategy, hydration ranges, gut health and the microbiome, what to do when you're too nauseous to eat but still have a long way to go, and why under-fuelling is a bigger threat to your gut than any high-carb gel. A lot of the specifics are Highland Trail flavoured, but the fuelling principles apply to any ultra-endurance adventure you've got on the horizon. Life gives many of us moments that can crack us open. For Wendy, this was a car accident that led her to seek alternative healing modalities and ultimately open up a healing center: Roslyn Salt Cave. We talk about the ups and downs, keeping faith in your vision, and letting life bring you what you need even when it's not always what you want. We also talk about the unglamorous in-between stages of the healing journey, the sometimes indignant inner child, why discernment matters more than any single modality, and building a community of healers.
