We took at trip over to Knock which is located in the county of Banffshire, UK to meet Gordon Bruce at Knockdhu Distillery, home of anCnoc Whisky."We make whisky. I manage a very small, very traditional distillery in North East Scotland. The emphasis is very much on having people take care of production rather than rely on technology and computers and modern-fangled things like that. The 21st century is overrated, grossly overrated. The distillery operates 24/7, with basically zero automation. We can only do that because of the guys we have here – it's a team of five now. The guys will spend the whole shift on their feet, they're continually moving. It's very much a hands-on process."We Are Makers Insta: @weare_makersWebsite: https://wearemakers.shop/Gordon BruceInsta: ancnoc_whiskyWebsite: https://ancnoc.com/The discussions and opinions in the podcast are not necessarily the opinions of us (We Are Makers). If you would like to hear more podcasts, please subscribe and like this video!Like this podcast and want to watch it? The June edition of Scottish Field is now available in shops and to order online, and this week, we're joined for the very first time on the podcast by the man responsible for ensuring that we have a magazine to read each month, our editor, Richard Bath. Also popping in is Gordon Bruce, the Knockdhu Distillery manager, who is also the host of a new monthly podcast series from anCnoc whisky.
In this episode I talk with Gordon Bruce of Iona. Originally from Cumbernauld, Gordon has lived on Iona for the last 18 years or so. We talk about life before Gordon came to Iona for a good portion of the episode, and then, roughly half way through we come on to his life on Iona, the various jobs that he’s had over the years, and touch into the nature of life in a small community and touchingly, the kindness of others. My wife and our dog make an appearance towards the end of the episode, so that’s the noise you can hear in the background. I’m delighted to say that we’ll be having a What We Do in the Winter Live event on at Dervaig Village Hall from seven thirty to nine thirty, this Saturday the 7th of March 2020. It’s free to come along, if you’re about do come and join us, we’d love to see you. It’s going to be recorded for release as a podcast in the coming weeks, so do come along and take part. Rather than talking to one person we’re going to be looking at a few topics, which I’m going to ask people to comment on from the audience. I’ve got a couple of plants already willing to speak, but everyone’s welcome to chip in. The topics are: Movies Made on Mull; Dervaig Village Hall through the ages; Delivery Vans and – Local Characters. I’m kind of hoping that we get derailed though and go off in directions that weren’t anticipated, so we’ll see what happens! Episode links and more can be found on whatwedointhewinter.com Many thanks for listening!
Short Brothers were the first UK company to manufacture aeroplanes. On the one hundredth anniversary of the opening of their first aeroplane works, Gordon Bruce recounts the amazing story of how two of the three brothers became entranced by flying machines and, now joined by the third brother, produce their first powered aircraft and build versions of the Wright A aircraft. He then explores the ups and downs of the company’s history over the following century, both in Kent and in Belfast. The lecture was addressed to the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Historical Group on 24 February 2009 and the podcast was edited by Mike Stanberry FRAeS.
You come to the One Nation Under Whisky podcast for the geeky and nerdy whisky discussion and today's episode is no different. Actually, yes it is. The whisky geekery level goes to 11 in today's conversation with Knockdhu Distillery's Distillery Manager, Gordon Bruce. We talk fermentation, yeast types, mashing, cycloning, the reasons for why some distilleries would want a clear wash (fermentation) rather than a cloudy one, and so much more. So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Special thanks to: - Weigh Down for allowing us to use their song "Wooden Monsters" as our theme song- Moana McAuliffe for designing our Podcast Logo- RØDE for making *really* great microphones- Focusrite for making awesome USB receivers- Olympus and Tascam for making fine mobile recording devices- Joshua Hatton for producing and editing

In the concluding paper of The beginnings of powered flight conference, Gordon Bruce explores the relationship between the Wright Brothers and the land of their ancestors. Starting off by looking at how UK aeronautical figures shaped Orville and Wilbur’s thinking, Bruce tells the story of the UK Government’s reaction to their invention, how the Wrights worked with Shorts to manufacture the Short-Wright aircraft for the civil market, how a disagreement with the Smithsonian led to the 1903 Wright Flyer spending a quarter of a century in London’s Science Museum and how Orville’s life-long work on protecting their patents was interrupted by a “noble act” of not renewing their basic UK patents in the heat of the First World War. The lecture concludes with a general question and answer session with speakers from across the day. The lecture was part of a seminar, “The beginnings of powered flight: The Wright Brothers contribution to aviation”, which was organised by the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Historical Group on 10 May 2003. The podcasts were edited by Mike Stanberry FRAeS and they were digitised thanks to a grant from the Royal Aeronautical Society Foundation.
The farming village of Knockdhu has 29 residents, 17 dogs, a bunch of sheep and cattle...and one distillery. Gordon Bruce has called Knockdhu home since 2006 as the manager of Knockdhu Distillery, the home of Inver House's anCnoc single malt Scotch Whisky. We first met Gordon in 2011 during a tour of the distillery, and caught up with him again at the recent Wonderful World of Whisky Show in Cornwall, Ontario - one of his rare trips away from that tiny farming village in Aberdeenshire. You'll hear our conversation on WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, the University of Kentucky's distilling studies program has a Bourbon benefactor after Beam Suntory donated $5 million to establish the James B. Beam Institute for Distilling Studies. Bushmills has received local approval for a $39 million expansion project that will add a second stillhouse and double the distillery's capacity. We'll also look at the week's new whiskies and much more, along with announcing the winner of our latest WhiskyCast competition!
Recorded live at The Session 2019, Dominic Twose, A.I.M.C, is my guest this week. Yes, you may not know his name. But, this episode is well worth listening too. Dominic was one of Fred Robinson's only pupils and Dom talks about how they met, what lessons were like with Fred and what it was like in the London magic scene at that time. Hanging out with Pat Page, Alex Elmsley, Gordon Bruce and more. He shares a great story about Gordon too. We go on to discuss how he got to write the indices for the Cervon Notebooks and be asked to write a brand new book of Cervon material. Finally we chat about his first magic book, Impromptu Secrets and how that came about. Enjoy.

As distilleries replace old equipment with new, the old stuff winds up on the scrap heap most of the time. Not so at Knockdhu Distillery in Scotland. Whether by coincidence, planning, or sheer luck, many of the distillery's artifacts have been preserved for decades after they were replaced by modern equipment. Knockdhu manager Gordon Bruce gives us a tour of his "museum" in this week's episode. In the news, plans for a new distillery in Louisville, management moves at Pernod Ricard, and plenty of new whiskies!
