Capacity and staffing challenges from ongoing COVID surges are creating a domino effect, delaying access to other medical care and backing up emergency departments. Dr. Gregg Miller, Chief Medical Officer of hospital staffing company Vituity, says that these compounding factors are bringing sicker patients into overwhelmed and understaffed emergency departments.
"Imagine this scenario: a busy mom struggles to balance work and parenting during the pandemic when suddenly her teenage son begins to anger. He gets out of control, screams threats, and kicks a hole in the wall. Neighbors call the police, who recommend the family go to the emergency department (ED). When the family arrives at the ED, the stresses of enforced isolation show on their exhausted, tearful faces. And unfortunately, in these extraordinary times, they're far from alone." Gregg Miller and Seth Thomas are emergency physicians. They share their stories and discuss their KevinMD article, "As the pandemic winds down, another crisis may be looming." In this episode, photographer Gregg Miller joined us to discuss photographing on Ash Wednesday, winning a Guggenheim, photographing in his hometown of Nashville, teaching workshops, the importance of mentors and much more! We were also joined by guest host Manjari Sharma who has now made an appearance on all three season. Manj credits Greg as one of her mentors and suggested him for the show, big thanks to Manj! She always brings a lot of enthusiasm and wisdom to the conversation. I admire Greg's photography deeply and learned a lot from our conversation that I will apply to my own work. His enthusiasm and passion for photography are inspiring. It's clear that he has natural teaching ability which is rare, despite everyone seemingly being a photography teacher these days. Greg is the real thing both as a photographer and educator. Recorded February 11th, 2016 at Stockholm Studios in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
