New data shows that opioid overdose deaths in the province from January-May fell from 788 in 2023 to 431 this year, a 55 percent decline. There are a number of factors that could explain the reason why, but the most political one is the United Conservative Party's focus on treatment and recovery, as opposed to harm reduction or safe supply.Except... the UCP does fund harm reduction programs, and has even increased the availability of them. It just doesn't like to talk about it. The decline in overdoses is a hopeful sign that a nuanced approach can work, even if it's not being advertised. So what can we learn from it?GUEST: Dr. Monty Ghosh, Internist and Addiction Specialist; Assistant Professor Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta We love feedback at The Big Story, as well as suggestions for future episodes. Roughly 68 million people bet on Super Bowl LVIII this year, amounting to more than $23 billion. In 2023, the American gambling industry generated more than $65 billion in revenue. These numbers surpass the economies of many small countries. In the United States, gambling – particularly sports betting – is here to stay and it is EVERYWHERE. In this week's episode, I brought in an expert with his own gambling war chest to discuss this social-cultural explosion. Brian Dolan is an Addiction Specialist and an advocate for recovery. He's an impassioned individual with personal triumphs over gambling and substance use disorders. With a Master's in Clinical Mental Health and 6 years of experience managing Collegiate Recovery Programs, Brian is tapped into gambling's mainstream rise, particularly among our youth, in a way most aren't. We discuss the pitfalls of gambling, how to identify a gambling problem, the risk on our youth, the complicity of policy makers and Big Business players ready to cash in, and the reality that gambling, once relegated to the underbelly of American society, is a cash cow of social problems one click away. I hope you enjoy this discussion about a critical issue whose darker side demands more attention in our national dialogue. Thank You and Keep Going. Erica also has the REWIRED PROGRAM which is an online educational program available on her website: Ericaspiegelman.com A counselor at one of the most innovative and renowned drug and alcohol treatment centers in the world introduces an empowering approach to addiction recovery that addresses the whole self—mind, body, and spirit This “useful and practical perspective on what you can do to recover from [addiction]” can replace or supplement 12-step programs—at any stage in your recovery (Allen Berger, Ph.D., author of 12 Stupid Things That Mess Up Recovery) Rewired is a new, breakthrough approach to fighting addiction and self-damaging behavior by acknowledging our personal power to bring ourselves back from the brink. Centered on the concept of self-actualization, Rewired will guide you towards not only physical sobriety, but a mental, emotional, and spiritual sobriety by learning to identify key principles within yourself, including authenticity, honesty, gratitude, and understanding a need for solitude. Rewired addresses the whole self; just as addiction affects every part of one's life, so too must its treatment. By helping us to build a healthy space to support our own recovery, we can rewrite the negative behaviors that result in addiction. Usable in conjunction with or in place of 12-step programs, Rewired allows for a more holistic approach, helping to create a personalized treatment plan that is right for you. Each section in Rewired includes: • Personal anecdotes from the author's own struggles with alcoholism and addiction • Inspiring true success stories of patients overcoming their addictions • Questions to engage you into finding what is missing from your recovery • Positive affirmations and intentions to guide and motivate With all the variables, both physical and emotional, that play into overcoming addiction, Rewiredenables us to stay strong and positive as we progress on the path to recovery. Rewired teaches patience and compassion, the two cornerstones of a new, humanist approach to curing addiction. Remember, addicts are not broken people that need to be fixed—they just have a few crossed wires. With Conservatives being largely ostracized in contemporary American culture, where can they go to solve personal issues? As a therapist, it's important to me that people of all walks of life are able to access mental health services, regardless of their politics. However, in recent years, the field of psychology has been influenced by notions of social justice that have resulted in politically left leaning therapists refusing to provide services for conservative patients — or, perhaps worse, attempting to use the therapeutic relationship to exert undue influence on vulnerable patients. This week's discussion with Soad Tabrizi touches on this issue of countertransference by analyzing how therapeutic competencies have been compromised by ideological narratives that tarnish the foundational principles of the therapeutic process. Soad Tabrizi is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) with a deep passion for integrative mental health. In her career, Soad has had the privilege of working with various individuals, families, couples, adolescents, addicts, codependents, geriatrics, students, and inmates in a diverse range of internships in the criminal justice system, hospitals, agencies, and schools. Shortly after graduating in 2010, she established her private practice. Today, her private practice operates exclusively through Telehealth. Soad holds certifications as an Addiction Specialist from Western Seminary and as a Psychological Autopsy Investigator (Suicidologist) from the American Association of Suicidology. Additionally, she is a Reiki Master trained through the International Center for Reiki Training. In her holistic approach to therapy, Soad works with the whole person, incorporating energy work and offering a unique perspective as an intuitive healer. Her sessions aim to align clients' outward behaviors with their core beliefs, fostering growth and transformation. Soad is licensed in eight states: California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, and Florida. Born in Iran and raised in the Bay Area, CA (Silicon Valley), Soad now lives with her husband in Orange County, CA. You can find Soad on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram all under the handle @soadtabrizi. We are in the middle of a Sexual Wholeness series. At Living Wholehearted we are helping leaders live and lead with integrity - from our professional counseling team (serving clients in Oregon) to our executive coaching, organizational development teams, and wholehearted leadership cohorts (serving leaders nationwide). And regardless of where we are walking with leaders - in the home, work, or community - sexuality is a part of our clients' stories. Today, we are focusing on the assessment and treatment of sex addiction, a topic that will not be for younger ears. If you have sexual trauma in your story, I also want to warn you that this episode might cause triggers, but if you can hang with us, as we talk in a manner of grace, hope, and practical steps, those triggers might be helpful cues for you in your own journey or in the journey of someone you are walking with today in your leadership. Many don't know this, but before I transitioned into the executive coaching space, I worked as a marriage and family therapist with leaders. Most of my marriage counseling consists of helping clients recover from sexual betrayal. Now, no one ever came to my office admitting there was a sex addiction. They came because they needed to work on communication. Maybe distance was growing or they wanted to work on their sex life but were unsure where to start. And then…over time, we would discover a hole in the boat—sex addiction. Today, I want to have this conversation with someone I've worked with over the years as a co-laborer in the field. Dr. Hosley and I have spent many years helping husbands and wives either heal their marriages or transition out of their marriages, depending on the level of severity of the addiction and willingness of both partners to work toward healing. Dr. Ryan Hosley, PsyD, is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, CSAT (Certified Sex Addiction Therapist), and Addiction Specialist in the Portland, Oregon area. He has been helping men and women and their families find freedom and healing from sex addiction for seventeen years. Dr. Laura Petracek is a clinical psychologist, addiction specialist, certified Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) therapist, author, and speaker with over 30 years of experience in psychotherapy, 26 of which have been spent as a practicing clinical psychologist in California. In this podcast, Dr. Petracek recalls her academic and professional journey, discusses the circumstances leading up to her opening her own private practice, then provides some highlights and background regarding her new book The DBT Workbook for Alcohol and Drug Addiction. When discussing how she ended up in the clinical psychology field of psychology, she states, “Sometimes I don't know if I chose the field or if it chose me.” She shares that at the age of 17, she went into drug and alcohol rehab and through that experience, she knew that she wanted to be a counselor then a therapist. So, after getting out of rehab, she immediately started her undergraduate work. She received her associates in chemical dependency counseling at Metropolitan Community College (now called Metropolitan State). Dr. Petracek then received her bachelor's degree in psychology from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. She received her Master of Social Work (MSW) in Ethnic, Cultural Minority, Gender, and Group Studies from Wurzweiler School of Social Work in New York, NY. She then attended the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco, CA for her PhD in Clinical Psychology. She and her cohorts at CIIS were the last group to receive a PhD in clinical psychology as the program is now a PsyD program. We discussed the differences between a PhD and a PsyD and why she chose the PhD route. Although Dr. Petracek could have received a doctorate in social work, she admits that was not the area she wanted to be in as she knew she wanted to eventually go into private practice. Before she did this, though, she gained a tremendous amount of experience as a clinical director of New Leaf Services, Associate Professor at National University, and psychologist with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation at San Quentin, CA. She has had her own private practice in the San Francisco Bay area for over 26 years. Dr. Petracek discusses her private practice and the challenges of building a private practice in a new area. She offers advice to those who are interested in running their own business and explains what she did regarding how to handle the accounting, marketing, and other aspects of owning your own private practice. For example, she recommends joining a group practice at the very beginning of your career as this offers you many benefits (e.g., learn more about running a business, sharing ideas through consultation work, help you understand how to determine how many clients to take on, build your client list, etc.). She also describes her ideal therapist. When describing her ideal therapist, she states, “someone who is knowledgeable in different theories of psychology and psychotherapy…someone who is not afraid to call me on my BS if it comes up” and someone who “offers compassion, but is challenging” and “supportive.” Dr. Petracek shares that she has been in therapy herself and states “my last therapist, he helped me tremendously through a challenging time when my daughter, only daughter, had left home for college and it was just a really rough time.” As a result, she went into a six-month DBT program. She explains that DBT is usually a six-month program but sometimes it is a six-month to a year program. Dr. Petracek discusses evidence-based therapies such as DBT, which is an extension of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The experience she gained going through the DBT program herself, getting certified as a DBT therapist, and her years of experience helping treat those with addictions all acted as the impetus and spark which led Dr. Petracek to combine the strategies and tools available in ...
Taner is a counsellor, therapist, and addiction specialist. Taner has worked in mental health for over 15 years and holds a senior position in mental health for the NHS. He talks to Daniel about his own experiences with drugs and mental health as well as what he offers to help others including the merits and effectiveness of unconscious mind therapy, counselling and mindset. KEY TAKEAWAYS Taner went sober at just 25 years old, triggered by a drug-induced psychosis. Taner's own experiences drove him to start working in mental health and he has been gaining experience and knowledge continuously ever since. Both Dan and Taner are under no illusion, they both enjoyed drugs and the escapism they offered. But, in the end, the drug experience wasn't worth the fallout for the rest of their lives. Having a problem with drugs or alcohol doesn't mean you have to be dependent on them. A problem is just as soon as drugs or alcohol begins to impact your life negatively. It doesn't matter what your addiction is, it's about your relationship with the substance or behaviour that matters. Unless you are at peace with yourself and who you are, you can't begin to do the proper work on yourself to have a successful and fulfilling life. You have to work and build on your happiness, it doesn't just magically happen. Daniel lost years to his addiction and it can be hard to not think about the time he has wasted, yet he recognises that everything that happened brought him to where he is and who he is today. An individual's mindset is one of the most powerful tools they own. Often the difference between those failing and those succeeding in life is choosing to do something about their situation. BEST MOMENTS “I thought, I'm losing sight of actual reality now” “I can't say I didn't love drugs, I loved them” “What is addiction? The overriding thought or obsessions to change how you feel” “We both need feminine and masculine traits to succeed in life” “Mindset is so powerful” VALUABLE RESOURCES CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE GUEST Taner Hassan MBACP Counsellor & Psychotherapist, Addiction Specialist, Unconscious Mind Therapist, Sex & Porn Addiction Therapist. After recently being diagnosed with severe ADHD and beginning his sobriety again, Daniel also set up a page on Facebook and Instagram called 'Men And Their Emotions' (M.A.T.E) an accessible, open and supportive group for MEN to post their feelings, thoughts and current life issues. Upon seeing the responses from men around the world to some of the posts on the group he was blown away and continues to be touched by the kindness and support offered by strangers. This all led to Daniel wanting to start up his own podcast and invite guests to join him in opening up about past experiences and talk about all things mental health, family & sobriety. When we think of addiction, most of us go straight to thoughts of alcohol or drugs, but what if I told you that you could be addicted to love? And that Love Addiction can be just as harmful to a person's life as drinking or drugs? In this week's episode, I sat down with trauma and addiction specialist Diane Young, to discuss the topic of Love Addiction. Diane outlines clearly the definition of love addiction, where it comes from and the different characteristics that define a love addict's behaviour. This is a fascinating conversation for anyone who finds themselves attracting the same “type” of person or for those who have difficulty maintaining romantic relationships. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, ‘Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?' On hearing this, Jesus said, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.' -Matthew 9:9-13 “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” -Hebrews 10:24-25 (music license ASLC-14EAD3E0-84F34F4276)
