Tracheostomy and laryngectomy emergencies are classic high-acuity, low-frequency situations. They do not happen every day, but when they do, airway problems can develop quickly, and the wrong intervention can make things significantly worse. In this episode, we work through the practical approach to these patients, starting with the most important distinction: a patient with a tracheostomy may still have a patent upper airway, whereas someone who has undergone a total laryngectomy is an obligate neck breather. That single anatomical difference determines where oxygen and ventilation need to be delivered. We'll look at the different tubes, cuffs, inner cannulas, speaking valves and humidification devices you may encounter, before moving through the common causes of deterioration, particularly obstruction, displacement and bleeding. Using the National Tracheostomy Safety Project's green and red emergency algorithms, we break management down into simple, sequential steps: apply oxygen, remove attachments, remove the inner cannula, pass a suction catheter, deflate the cuff when appropriate and remove a non-functioning tube when necessary. These cases can initially feel intimidating, but a calm, structured approach can make them far more manageable. Once again we'd love to hear any thoughts or feedback either on the website or via X @TheResusRoom! Simon. Rob & James

Grow the Value of Your Business: Make it Worth More

Top Secrets

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 14, 2026 15:06

To grow the value of your business, consider this. If your business burns down, you’ve got whatever… desks, furniture and things like that. That stuff’s all insured. You should be able to come back from that okay. But if your book of business burns down, right? If you still have all this overhead, but you don’t have that book of business anymore, you are really in trouble. Because if you have desks, and furniture, and technology but you don’t have the ability to sell to the people that you need to sell to, what’s that really worth? All of that is just overhead. David: Hi, and welcome to the podcast. In today’s episode, co-host Jay McFarland, and I will be discussing building the value of your business. Welcome back Jay. Jay: Hey, I’m so glad to be here, David. Once again, you hit me with another term, Do I really know what the value of my business is? And value has such a different meaning for so many, right? Value could be. Well, it gives me free time. I hate my business, but it gives me free time. So it’s of great value. Or it’s of great value because I have all these shiny toys, you know, those types of things. So I think value could be very different for different people. David: Yeah, it absolutely can. Particularly when we’re thinking about business owners versus salespeople. When I think about business value, I mean what is it worth to someone else if they wanted to buy it from you. For a business owner, what would someone actually pay for the business? For a salesperson, what is your book of business worth? If you’re building something up and somebody wanted to buy your book of business, what would that be worth? That’s what I was thinking of in terms of value. But you touched on a lot of other great points regarding the term. Jay: Yeah, like I said, there’s so many other things. I’ve talked to people who have said, yeah, I’m thinking about selling my business. And I ask them, well, what’s it worth? They often look at me like I have no idea whatsoever. In fact, I was working for Kinko’s way back when, when they wanted to sell. And they wanted to go public first, and the SEC came in and said, you don’t know what you own. You don’t know what you owe. You don’t know anything about your business. And you have the worst paperwork system we’ve ever seen in our lives. You’re not going public. And so they went and found a private buyer, which was FedEx, who went and bought FedEx Kinko’s. So just in how you manage your business can affect the value of that business. David: Yeah, absolutely. And for a lot of people, the value of their business isn’t going to be FedEx Kinko’s worthy, very likely. Jay: Yeah. David: But still, it’s good to know. And, for some it might be worth more than that. But for most people, particularly small to medium sized businesses, when they’re looking to sell, they really don’t have any idea of what the business is worth or what it could be worth to someone else. And in different industries, there are different metrics and multipliers that people use. They say, okay, well, we’re going to take a multiple of your net value. In other words, what is, bottom line, after owner’s compensation and things like that. They have a number of different metrics that people use. But in a lot of cases, that’s what it boils down to. What’s it likely to be worth to someone else? Glen Holt was a professional in the promotional products industry for a long time. He was one of my mentors in the early days. I remember him saying that when people are looking to buy a business, what they’re really paying for is the likelihood of future business. Because the only way I want to spend a dime on a business is if I know it’s going to generate a high multiple of that over a period of time. Whether it’s two years or five years, or seven years or ten years, whatever that multiple ends up being. At some point I know that I’m going to be able to recoup my investment and make more going forward. Jay: Yeah, exactly. Maybe you envision running this business forever and then you hand it off to your kids and their kids. But a lot of parents find out their kids don’t want the business. So it’s not easy to offload it that way. But I like the idea of even if you’re never considering running your business, things happen. Right? Medical things happen. Emergencies happen. You may find yourself someday saying, “I don’t want to sell. But I have to sell because of my circumstances.” So I think always running your business in a way that if you had to sell, you’d have your numbers in line. You’ve built your value, you have a clientele. I think that may be just a good mindset. David: Yeah. It’s also a good mindset if you think about the fact that some people don’t want to sell their businesses. That’s perfectly fine. But the thing that you have to realize is that if you don’t sell your business, then who bought it? You did, right? Jay: Yeah, yeah, yeah. David: You bought it with your time, your energy, your effort, all the hours that you put into it. So it’s good to be able to say, “okay, I know what I’ve put into this.” If you even get a value of what it might be worth to someone else, you can say, “would I be willing to pay that for this business?” Right? Or the amount of time and energy and effort that I put in, would I want it to be worth more than that? So I think it’s a good metric to know from our own standpoint in terms of what’s the business worth or what’s the book of business worth to someone else. But also how am I doing in terms of what I was hoping to build when I started out? Jay: Yeah, that’s a good question. What were you expecting to build and where are you now and what more can you do? I think there’s also some sticker shock when you think your business is worth one thing and someone comes in and says, “oh, I think it’s worth half that.” You’re like, “wait a minute, this is my baby! I built this thing. It has to be worth more than that.” David: Right, but there are metrics that you can use to make those determinations. And chances are, if you go to sell your business, somebody’s going to tell you they think it’s worth less than you do. But that’s where you have to make a determination as well and say, “okay, well look, if you were to buy this business, in three and a half years, you would be able to get your money back even if you just maintain it,” right? So, and if they say, “well, I only want to pay, you know, a year’s worth,” then you can say, “all right, well we probably don’t have a fit here,” or whatever. But as long as you’ve got the metrics to back it up, to say, okay, we’re doing this amount of sales after our costs, we’re doing this amount. If you take out what the owner’s being compensated, then this is what you would have left at the end of each year. And then you use that as some sort of multiple to say. Is it two years? Is it three years? Three and a half, five, seven, whatever you can get. Now, there are some companies, particularly in the tech space, and particularly if they’re recurring revenue companies, that they can sell for high multiples of what they’re bringing in each year. It just depends on what people feel that it’s worth and also, what they think they’ll be able to do with it. Because if somebody has a book of business and they’re selling whatever, a quarter million, half a million dollars a year, I’m talking about a salesperson and they want to retire. If they were to sell their book of business to someone else, and that person was going to look at it and say, well, I think I can probably maintain that for a certain number of years. Then they would value it based on that. If they looked at it and said, I think I can do twice what this guy’s doing with this book of business, then they might value it higher. Jay: Mm-hmm. David: So a lot of it has to do with the person that you are looking to potentially sell to as well. Jay: Yeah, absolutely. And I also think just some of the more simpler things like staffing, you know, who’s running the place when you’re not there? What does the place look like? Is the equipment updated? Because, you know, that’s what I’m thinking. Am I going to have to come in here and update all of this equipment? Will I have ongoing capital costs? Am I going to have all of these things? You may think you’re saving a dollar now, but if you do have to sell, it’s really going to hurt yourself in the long run. David: Yeah, and we didn’t even really talk about things like that because it depends on the kind of business that you have. Jay: Mm-hmm. David: If you’ve got a lot of overhead, if you’ve got furniture, fixtures, real estate, all those types of things, those are all going to play into it. I was really thinking more in terms of small businesses or a book of business that a salesperson has, where it’s primarily their book of business that they’re selling. Because in those situations, when people buy businesses too, they very often prefer to do an asset sale. They only want to buy assets of the business so that if there were any potential issues with the business before, if somebody was going to try to sue the business or whatever, that wouldn’t potentially come with a sale. So they’d say, “I just want to buy certain assets. I want to buy your customer base. Maybe I want to buy certain furniture and fixtures. I want to take along certain employees.” So they can sort of cherry pick the things that they want to buy from the business. But I don’t want to get too much into the weeds on this. I think for anyone who has been considering the idea of, okay, what is my business or my book of business worth? What do I need to look at? And so some of it would be to say, okay, what type of clients do I have? Do I have a base of high value clients? People who spend money with me consistently? Because if I do, that’s going to be worth a whole lot more than if I’m getting one-off and two off orders from lots of different people, and it’s coming from all kinds of different sources and I can’t say where it’s coming from. Jay: Right. David: When you know where your clients are coming from and you’re selling to them on an ongoing basis and you’ve got a lot of repeat and referral business, that’s a whole lot easier to sell. Jay: Yeah, absolutely. In fact, you know, I’m just going through this process right now. I am basically starting a company that is mirroring the company I work for, because they’re going out of business, and I was able to cherry pick the things that I liked, so, David: mm-hmm. Jay: Yes, give me your customer base. Yes, give me some of your systems with your website and things like that. Throw the rest away. I don’t want any of the other stuff because I didn’t feel like they were doing it right. So I really came away, like you said, with this book of business that I know is going to be of high value and high dollar for me. David: Yeah. And what a lot of people lose sight of sometimes is that that is really the primary value of a business. There are a lot of people in the print and promotions industry where they’ve got printing equipment and they’ve got all that sort of thing, inks and all sorts of things like that, which for the most part reflects overhead. That stuff that you’ve got to pay for, that then has to be paid back. And all of that’s going to be paid back by the customers that you’re able to bring in. So it’s all going to be dependent upon the business that’s coming in. So a lot of times the things that some business owners and also most banks, the thing that most banks look at as assets are to most business owners, actually liabilities because it’s overhead. And I’ve, said this a number of times when I’ve been speaking in public about this. One of the things that I’ve said very often is the fact that If your business burns down, you don’t want that to happen, right? But if your business burns down and you’ve got whatever, desks and furniture and things like that, that stuff’s all insured. You should be able to come back from that okay. But if your book of business burns down, right? If you still have all this overhead, but you don’t have that book of business anymore, you are really in trouble. Because if you’ve got desks and you’ve got furniture, and you’ve got technology and everything, and you don’t have the ability to sell to the people that you need to sell to, at that point, what’s that really worth? All of that becomes overhead. So it’s just good to think about. Jay: Well, and I also think, and I don’t know if this is on topic, with what you’re thinking of, but it really pops in my mind, is if you have different salespeople in your business and their book of business is treated as their book of business, if they leave, you’ve lost a portion of your clientele. And so it’s very important to somehow incorporate that into a customer management system where you can see everything that’s been going on, maybe have non-competes. Because in the situation I was in, I attained a certain level of knowledge that no one else in the company had. And so when I went to leave, they’re like, “we’re going to have to shut down because he is the only guy who knows this stuff.” And so offloading their information, offloading their customer base, making sure that it’s treated as your property if you do have a sales team, I think is absolutely critical. David: Yeah, absolutely is. In the promotional products industry in particular, a lot of businesses hire independent contractors. And when you’re an independent contractor, unless there are documents that say something different, you pretty much own that book of business. Jay: Yeah. David: If you’re an employee, if you’re a paid salesperson, if you’re on salary, then it’s very likely that the company owns that book of business, unless there’s some sort of documentation saying otherwise. So regardless of however you’re set up, it’s really smart to have some sort of clarification upfront when you join an organization. Okay, who owns these clients? Is it the salesperson? Is it the business? Because if you’re unclear on that stuff, that could lead to expensive legal issues down the line. Jay: Yeah. One person could walk out the door and that’s it. Then you’re rebuilding from scratch. David: Yeah, we have a manual system, that a number of businesses in the print and promotional products industry have used. And when we were promoting that at one point, one of the points that I made with that particular product was that if someone were to walk out of a bank with $250,000 that didn’t belong to them, that would be called bank robbery. It would be a crime. Jay: Yeah. Yeah. David: And they would send the police after you. But if a sales representative walks out of your business with $250,000 worth of business, if you don’t have the paperwork in place, there’s no crime there, right? Jay: Nope. David: You just lost it, and that person has it. Jay: That’s right. David: So you really want to make sure that stuff is nailed down in advance. Jay: Absolutely. I love this discussion. How can people find out more? David: Well, you can go to TopSecrets.com/call to schedule a call with myself or my team. If you’re thinking about building up the value of your business, one of the best ways to do that is to have the systems and processes in place that will allow you to be able to sell it, move away from it, and have the person who buys it be able to expect to continue to grow that business and obtain a high return on investment. That’s what’s going to allow you to sell it for top dollar. If you don’t have systems and processes like that in place, it’d be great to have a conversation. Jay: Yeah, absolutely. David, once again, it’s always a pleasure. David: Thank you very much, Jay. Want to Grow the Value of Your Business? Not everything urgent is actually important. And fake emergencies can destroy your focus fast. In this episode of The Level Up Podcast, Paul Alex breaks down the urgency illusion and why leaders must learn how to separate real threats from everyday noise. Let's be real… If every email feels like a crisis… Every client text becomes a fire drill… Every vendor request interrupts your schedule… And every small issue gets treated like a five-alarm emergency… Your company will live in constant panic. In this episode, you'll learn: Why other people's poor planning should not become your emergency How fake urgency destroys focus, strategy, and team morale Why boundaries are essential for strong leadership How calm decision-making helps your team move faster and execute better The truth is simple: You are a CEO. Not an emergency room doctor. Your job is not to react to every piece of noise. Your job is to filter the chaos. Protect the calendar. Prioritize the real threats. And create the space required to think strategically. High-level leaders do not panic on command. They set rules of engagement. They enforce boundaries. They manage the queue. They only sound the alarm when it actually matters. Because when everything is urgent… Nothing is truly important. Filter the noise. Protect the schedule. Lead with control. And keep leveling up. What happens when The Rizzuto Show leaves the safety of the studio and heads into a parking lot? Absolute chaos… for a really good cause. In Episode 158, the gang broadcasts live from Operation Food Search's Fill-A-Truck event and immediately turns a community food drive into what definitely isn't a competition. Except it absolutely becomes a competition. There's trash talk aimed at neighboring radio stations, debates over whether oatmeal counts as a flex, and a running tally of who brought the best donations. The morning starts with listeners rolling in carrying bags of food and enough generosity to restore your faith in humanity. One listener drops off hundreds of pounds of food donations, another arrives from Texas after surviving a deer collision and driving to St. Louis with a trash bag covering a busted headlight, and somehow everyone ends up talking about cronuts and Pizza Hut uniforms.Meanwhile, the crew experiences their first-ever outdoor broadcast complete with sunglasses, overflowing parking lots, and a near-disaster involving rapidly disappearing donuts. Rafe conducts unofficial food inspections, discovers Cheddar Bay Biscuit mix among the donations, and decides the kids receiving Monster Energy drinks are about to have the most exciting afternoon ever. Then the unthinkable happens: the truck fills up way ahead of schedule. Because Rizz Show listeners don't do things halfway, the team immediately moves on to filling additional vans with donations for Operation Food Search. As if all of that wasn't enough, there are giveaways, parking-lot trivia contests, questionable science questions, Abraham Lincoln appearances, mitochondria discussions, and a lot of yelling about obtuse angles. This episode is everything you expect from a daily comedy show: community spirit, sarcastic humor, weird conversations, and the kind of random moments that somehow make perfect sense on The Rizzuto Show.Whether you're here for the funny stories, the community giving, the donut emergencies, or just to hear grown adults argue about canned goods, this daily comedy show delivers another wonderfully ridiculous morning. Thanks for supporting Operation Food Search and for proving once again that listeners of this daily comedy show will show up, show out, and probably bring snacks.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShowHear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Hip complaints are bread-and-butter emergency medicine—but every so often they are anything but straightforward. The obvious shortened, externally rotated leg after a fall is one thing; the patient with acute hip pain, a normal x-ray, unremarkable blood work, and no clear diagnosis is another. Hip fractures are also far from benign, carrying a 30-day mortality of 6–7% and a 1-year mortality of about 20%, often triggering a cascade of pain, immobility, delirium, deconditioning, and death. But hip fractures are only the tip of the iceberg. In this EM Cases episode, Dr. Arun Sayal and Dr. Matt DiStefano go beyond “get an x-ray and call ortho” to tackle hip fractures, occult injuries, atraumatic hip pain, and hip dislocations. We answer questions like: Why do so many patients never return to baseline after a hip fracture? What can we do in the ED to avoid delaying surgery? What are the best pain management and delirium prevention strategies? Which physical exam findings help diagnose an occult hip fracture? How do we distinguish hip from pelvic fractures clinically? When is a normal x-ray not enough, and when should we proceed to CT or MRI? What is POCUS useful for in the painful hip? How should hip fractures be classified to change ED management? How should we approach atraumatic hip pain? How do native and prosthetic hip dislocations differ? What clinical position suggests posterior versus anterior dislocation? Which reduction technique should we choose? What is the Whistler technique? What are the nuances of post-reduction management? And much more. Warehouse and Operations as a Career
The Job Is Available. Are You?

Warehouse and Operations as a Career

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 11, 2026 13:53

Yep, there is a gap between available jobs and job ready candidates. There are jobs available, but employers are becoming much more selective about who they hire. A few years ago, many facilities were simply trying to fill positions. Today, employers are looking for candidates who can bring reliability, flexibility, safety awareness, and productivity on their first day.  What many of us applicants don’t realize is that employers are often evaluating far more than just experience. I'm Marty here with Warehouse and Operations as a Career. So let’s talk about that.  I recently was enjoying lunch with a long time mentor and the subject of hiring came up. He made a point I had to ponder on for a moment.  He commented that although training was expensive, and of course experience is important, he had learned or felt like, in todays environment, things like attendance history, reliable transportation, the ability to be flexible with shift times, and a strong safety mindset along with a wiliness to cross train, and at least average communication skills were what he was placing more weight on these days. And he made it a point to comment on, what he'd look for first was a stable work history.    The challenge for us applicants becomes, I can do the job is no longer enough. Employers are asking, can I depend on you to do the job consistently?  And some other hurdles for us, or a few things I thought of start off with those pesky Applicant tracking systems or ATS. Many applicants never speak to a recruiter because their application gets filtered before a human ever sees it.  And wage expectations vs market rates. Applicants often see social media posts about higher wages, while many entry level positions are paying less than expected. And I'm seeing more skilled equipment requirements. Many facilities now want forklift, reach truck, electric pallet jack, clamp truck, or inventory experience, even for positions that were once considered entry-level. And communication challenges. I hear this every day, and I think both sides are probably quilty, but Recruiters frequently comment on the struggle to reach applicants who don’t answer calls. Have full voicemail boxes. And don’t respond to texts or emails. Then we have competition from better candidates. When ten applicants apply for a position, employers often choose the one with better attendance, longer tenure, and the better interviewing skills.   The good news is that the hurdle is also the opportunity. A candidate who shows up on time, returns calls, has a positive attitude, accepts coaching, prioritizes safety, is willing to learn additional equipment can often outperform applicants with years more experience.  As we've discussed many times on WAOC, the industry still offers tremendous career opportunities. The challenge isn’t necessarily finding a job, it’s demonstrating that you’re the person an employer can trust with the opportunity.  So, if there’s applicants looking for work, and employers looking for workers, why are they not connecting? Well, I think the hiring game has changed. Twenty years ago, many warehouses and production facilities hired almost entirely on experience. Could you drive a forklift, pull an order, load a trailer, or operate a machine? If the answer was yes, there was a pretty good chance you’d get hired on the spot. Today, things are just different. Most employers are still looking for skills, but they’re looking for something else first. They’re looking for dependability. They’re looking for consistency. And they’re looking for people they can count on.  I’ve sat across the table from hundreds, maybe thousands, of hiring managers throughout my career. And I can tell you something that might surprise applicants. Many managers would rather hire a dependable employee with less experience than an experienced employee there not sure can be counted on. Think about that for a moment. The employee who shows up every day, arrives on time, follows instructions, works safely, and wants to learn often becomes more valuable than the person with years of experience but poor attendance or a negative attitude.  Let’s talk about the first hurdle many applicants never even see. The Applicant Tracking System, or ATS. Years ago, an application landed directly on someone’s desk. Today, many applications are screened by software before a recruiter ever sees them. A computer may be reviewing your application before a human being does. Now, I’m not saying that’s good or bad. It’s just reality.  If your work history is incomplete, if your resume doesn’t match the position, or if key information is missing, you may never make it to the interview stage. Many applicants think nobody called me. The reality may be nobody ever saw the application. That’s why accuracy on our part matters. Taking an extra few minutes to complete an application correctly matters. And that’s why we should tailor our resumes to the position we're applying for.   Now let’s talk about what employers are really seeking. Most people think employers hire labor. I don’t. I think employers hire reliability. Let’s say I have two candidates. Candidate A has five years of forklift experience. Candidate B has one year of forklift experience. Most people automatically assume Candidate A gets the job. What if Candidate A has changed jobs every three months and has attendance concerns and arrives late for the interview? But Candidate B has a solid work history, great references, and arrives fifteen minutes early? The decision suddenly becomes much harder. In fact, many employers will choose Candidate B. Because skills can be taught. Reliability is much harder to teach.  Here’s another challenge I see every day. Applicants submit applications. Recruiters call. Nobody answers. Recruiters text. No response. Recruiters email. No reply. A few days later, the applicant says nobody contacted me. Now, I’m not picking on anyone. But communication matters. If you’re actively looking for work, we need to answer our phone, check our voicemail and respond to texts. And watch our email. I’ve seen qualified candidates lose opportunities simply because another applicant responded first. Speed matters in recruiting. Especially in warehousing and manufacturing. Sometimes positions are filled within hours. Not days. Not weeks. Literally, just hours.  Transportation is often part of the interview before the interview. Can you reliably get to work? Can you make a 5:00 AM shift? Can you work overtime? Can you handle weekends when required? Employers understand that life happens. Cars break down. Traffic exists. Emergencies occur. But employers are also trying to determine whether attendance problems are likely to become a pattern. Remember attendance drives productivity. And productivity drives customer satisfaction. And customer satisfaction keeps facilities open and growing. Again, everything is connected.  Another thing I'm seeing is that Years ago, some facilities focused heavily on production. Today, safety and production must work together. Most employers are looking for candidates who understand safety expectations. They want associates who wear PPE correctly, follow procedures, report hazards, work safely around equipment, and take training seriously. The old mindset of I’ve been doing this for twenty years doesn’t impress many employers anymore. The new mindset is I’ve been doing this for twenty years and I’m still learning. That’s the employee organizations want. Safety conscious employees protect themselves, their coworkers, and the company.  And I think another hurdle for us is Technology. Today we have RF scanners, Warehouse Management Systems, voice picking systems, tablets, inventory software, electronic inspections and productivity tracking. Some applicants become nervous when they hear the word technology. And we can't. All systems can be learned. The bigger issue is willingness I think. Employers aren’t necessarily looking for technology experts. Again, they’re looking for people willing to learn. A positive attitude toward technology often beats resistance every time.  I think competition is stronger than ever. You’re not competing against the job. You’re competing against other applicants. Imagine ten people apply for the same position. Who gets the interview and the offer? Often, it’s the candidate who demonstrates better attendance better communication better attitude better stability better preparation. Notice that experience isn’t the only factor. Sometimes it isn’t even the most important factor. The candidate who prepares wins. The candidate who follows up and demonstrates professionalism wins.  A recruiter told me last week. If I could sit every applicant down and share one message from employers, it would be this, we want to hire you. Think about that. Recruiters don’t wake up hoping positions stay open. Supervisors don’t want to work short staffed. Managers don’t enjoy running operations with vacancies. Everyone wants positions filled. But employers need confidence. Confidence that we'll show up. Confidence that we plan on staying. Confidence that we'll work safely and represent the organization well. That’s what they’re evaluating. Not just whether we can do the work. But whether they can trust us with the work.  So, what can us applicants do? I think it's simple. If we own it. We need to show up early. And we need to dress appropriately. If we're interviewing as an equipment operator or selector, wear our steel or composite toe footwear.  We have to answer our phone and return calls. The hiring agent may be making 50 calls, the next person may answer there’s. And its so important that we bring energy to interviews. And were honest about our experience. And demonstrate willingness to learn. Show our enthusiasm. Ask questions. Express interest in advancement. Employers love hearing things like I’d like to learn more. I’d like to cross-train. I’d like to grow into a lead role someday. Those statements communicate commitment. And like we've learned, commitment gets attention.  As we wrap up today’s episode, I’d like to leave you with a challenge. If you’ve been applying for jobs and not getting results, don’t immediately assume there are no opportunities. Ask yourself a different question. Am I making it easy for an employer to hire me? Am I communicating effectively? Am I presenting myself professionally? Am I demonstrating reliability? Am I showing a willingness to learn?  It’s just a fact that in today’s world, employers are looking for more than experience. They’re looking for trust. They’re looking for consistency. They’re looking for commitment. The jobs are out there. The opportunities and careers are out there. Not to sound corny but the question isn’t always whether the job is available. The question is, Are you available for the job?  Ok, we're running over today so with all that I'll say thank you for joining me today, and please share any thoughts on job opportunities with our Facebook group @whseops or our Instagram feed waocpodcast. Until next time, be safe, stay productive, and keep building your career.

North Dakota's statewide preparedness system grew out of lessons learned from disasters, public health emergencies, and the realities of serving rural and frontier communities. Tim Wiedrich, director of health response and licensure for the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services, tells us about how the state developed a unified public-private partnership that supports hospitals, public health agencies, EMS providers, and long-term care facilities across North Dakota.  Tim explains how the events of September 11 and the anthrax attacks reshaped preparedness planning, leading to the creation of a centralized statewide medical cache stocked with critical medical equipment, supplies, pharmaceuticals, generators, and infrastructure support resources. Bridging Systems: Health Care and Public Health Collaborate on Emergency Preparedness in North Dakota | ASTHOPrioritizing Emerging Infectious Disease Cases and Contacts for Follow-Up | ASTHOSubscribe | ASTHO

Send us Fan MailNonprofit crisis fundraising strategy is not about making every donor message sound urgent—it is about knowing when urgency is real, how to communicate it honestly, and how to keep donor trust intact. In this Fundraisers Friday episode, Julia C. Patrick and Tony Beall take on one of the most familiar fundraising habits in the sector: the constant use of emergency-driven appeals. From “now more than ever” messaging to year-end giving campaigns, this conversation challenges nonprofit leaders to think carefully about the business impact of their fundraising language. Tony explains why repeated crisis appeals can create donor fatigue, especially when supporters receive multiple fear-based messages from several organizations at once. At some point, donors may begin to wonder whether they are investing in impact—or being asked to rescue an unstable organization.Tony offers a clear reminder for fundraising teams: “If everything is urgent, eventually really nothing feels urgent.” That idea becomes the core of this episode. Nonprofits must distinguish between a true community crisis, a temporary emergency program need, a fiscal funding gap, and a normal fundraising cycle. Each situation calls for different communication, different transparency, and a different donor invitation. The duo also explore the difference between disaster-related appeals, funding cuts, year-end campaigns, and mission-based messaging. For some organizations, fear-based messaging may be appropriate when it is grounded in fact and tied directly to the mission. For others, hope and impact may be the stronger path. Tony's advice is direct: “When I was confused about my messaging or what direction I should be going… I always go back to the mission.”The goal is not to avoid urgency. The goal is to use it wisely, honestly, and in service of sustainable mission investment.  00:00:00 Don't Hook Donors on Emergencies 00:02:17 Why Constant Crisis Messaging Creates Donor Fatigue 00:03:22 When Appeals Start Sounding Like a Cry for Help 00:05:26 Disaster Relief vs. Everyday Nonprofit Messaging 00:06:32 How to Define a True Fundraising Crisis 00:10:04 Fiscal Crisis, Funding Cuts, and Donor Transparency 00:13:17 Year-End Appeals Without Panic Messaging 00:16:16 Direct Mail, Donor Lists, and Realistic ROI 00:17:59 Fear, Hope, Impact, and Mission Alignment 00:22:16 Donor Perception and Message Segmentation 00:25:01 Mission Investment vs. Rescue Giving 00:26:48 If Everything Is Urgent, Nothing Feels Urgent #TheNonprofitShow #NonprofitFundraising #DonorEngagementFind us Live daily on YouTube!Find us  Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits!  12:30pm ET   11:30am CT  10:30am MT  9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

Who is the first one to get cut from the priority list when a loved one has an unexpected event? You! We innately want to care for others in their times of need. And that means giving up gym time, your nutrition goals may go out the window for a time, and whatever else you enjoy and do for yourself.  See, What Had Happened Was… Recently, I ran planning prep day and planning day and boy were my ducks in a row. By Sunday I had meal prepped, mapped out my week, and I was on fire to crush my goals. However Monday morning my sweet daughter called to say she was sick and asked if I could take Grayson to school. As moms do, I said yes. Which meant my time to go to the gym would now be spent with Grayson.   Then she called later in the day to say she was too sick to take care of Noah too.  So once again rearranged my day and rushed off to pick up Grayson so I could get home to take care of Noah too.  Thank God I remembered some food I had prepped to keep me on track and Grayson from getting hungry. Because Grayson had a Dr. appointment too and I had planned a snack ahead of time. Then I had this great idea to see if Greg, my husband, wanted to have lunch. Although I took the last bite of chicken salad as we hung up the phone. I was clearly off my game. And the next day, I skipped attending a talk by an economist so I could catch up on the work I hadn't been able to finish the day before. But my planning did come into play. I had healthy food around me to support my nutrition focus of the week. But my self care was sacrificed in caring for my grandchildren to support Abby who was sick.  And that's what we do for our family members. I wasn't about to say, "No Abby, I have to go to the gym this morning."  No, I chose to serve and support my daughter.  Mindset Shift We need to have a mindset shift to know something is going to get sacrificed that we wanted to do in place of caring for our loved one. How do we have good systems in place and ways to continually be upleveling our own care, knowledge, and who we are, so that we are able to care for others in times of crisis? That's the whole premise of my book "Escaping Quicksand". Unexpected events happen to everyone. But do you have a system in place to keep you on track in those moments? And are you equipped with the mindset to combat those situations? Webinar Alert: On June 12th @ 11:30 EST, in the Paper Solution Group, I plan to go through the medical binder. I know I want to insert some labs and DNA results and a few other things. Plus, I want to update the kids' medical information with me as power of attorney. Where Should You Keep Your Emergency Fund?

An emergency fund can be the difference between a financial setback and a financial crisis—but only if it's built the right way. Most people know they should have money set aside for emergencies. But many aren't sure how much to save, what actually counts as an emergency, or where to keep that money. Those are important questions, because an emergency fund is not just another savings goal. It is a key part of wise financial stewardship. What Is an Emergency Fund? An emergency fund is money set aside for unexpected, significant financial disruptions. Those two words matter: unexpected and significant. This is not money for routine expenses, planned purchases, or occasional wants. It is reserved for the kinds of situations that can suddenly shake your financial life—job loss, a major medical need, a significant car repair, an urgent home repair, or another event that interrupts your income or requires a large amount of cash. In that sense, an emergency fund acts like a financial shock absorber. When something unexpected happens, it helps keep a difficult situation from turning into debt, panic, or financial chaos. Without an emergency fund, many people are forced to rely on credit cards or loans during hard times. But with one in place, you create stability and breathing room when uncertainty comes. How Much Should You Save? A helpful rule of thumb is to keep three to six months of living expenses in your emergency fund. That means enough to cover essential expenses such as housing, food, utilities, insurance, transportation, and other necessary costs. For example, if your household needs $5,000 per month to cover basic expenses, a fully funded emergency fund would typically range from $15,000 to $30,000. Where you land in that range depends on your situation. If your income is stable and predictable, three months may be enough. But if your income fluctuates, if you're self-employed, or if you simply want additional peace of mind, six months—or even a little more—may be appropriate. The goal is not perfection. The goal is preparedness. Is Saving for Emergencies a Lack of Faith? Some Christians may wonder whether saving for emergencies reflects a lack of trust in God. But Scripture encourages wise preparation. Proverbs 6:6–8 says, “Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.” The ant is not anxiously trying to control the future. It is wisely preparing for what may come. That is the posture we want to take with our finances. An emergency fund is not about pretending we can control tomorrow. It is about stewarding today's resources wisely so that when tomorrow brings challenges, we are not forced into panic or unnecessary debt. Planning and trusting God are not opposites. In many cases, wise planning is an expression of faithful stewardship. Where Should You Keep Your Emergency Fund? Once you decide how much to save, the next question is where to keep it. This is where many people get tripped up. While an emergency fund should grow over time, it is not meant to be invested like a retirement account. Why? Because investments such as stocks and mutual funds fluctuate. If the market drops at the exact moment you need the money, your safety net may suddenly be smaller than you expected. Likewise, locking emergency funds in a certificate of deposit can limit your access. If you need to withdraw early, you may face penalties or lose interest. An emergency fund has two primary goals: safety and accessibility. You want the money protected and accessible quickly when a real need arises. That's why many financial advisors recommend keeping emergency funds in accounts such as high-yield savings accounts or money market accounts. These allow your money to earn a competitive rate while remaining liquid and accessible. They are also typically insured, helping protect your savings while they earn a modest return without taking unnecessary risk. A Banking Option Worth Considering This is where our friends at Christian Community Credit Union (CCCU) come in. They recently merged with AdelFi to form AdelFi Christian Banking, creating even more opportunities for believers to align their banking with their faith. Right now, AdelFi offers a high-yield money market account that may be a good fit for an emergency fund. With this account, you can earn around 4% on balances up to $100,000, giving you both strong returns and the liquidity you need if an emergency arises. And when you bank with AdelFi, your deposits help fund ministry initiatives and Kingdom work around the world. For FaithFi listeners, there is also a special offer. When you open an account and use the code FAITHFI, you can receive up to a $400 bonus. To learn more, visit FaithFi.com/Banking. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions: I'm 68 and still working. I have about $50,000 in a 403(b) from a previous employer—part traditional, part Roth—and it's my only retirement savings. My tax preparer suggested I stop contributing to the Roth and use the traditional side so I could withdraw about $10,000 a year later with less tax. Now I'm wondering: should I move the traditional portion into a Roth, and how would that work? I'm 67 and have a 401(k) through my current employer. I'd like to use about $25,000 from it to buy a car instead of taking out a loan. Am I allowed to do that, and would I need to check with my plan administrator to see whether my 401(k) permits it? I'm considering a reverse mortgage, but I'm confused. If I take one out, would I still own my home, or would the house belong to the lender? Also, could I use a reverse mortgage for only about a year? What requirements would I need to meet based on my current mortgage balance and my home's value? I'm receiving SSDI, and I've heard those benefits switch to regular Social Security at retirement age. Will that happen automatically at 62, 65, or another age? Also, once it switches to retirement benefits, will I be able to work and earn income without being penalized? I'm 71 and planning to use Qualified Charitable Distributions from my IRA to reduce taxes. Since my birthday is in August, when should I make those gifts—before my birthday or later in the year? And when is my Required Minimum Distribution calculated so the QCD counts properly?
