On the day after what would have been Harry Leslie Smith's 99th birthday we speak to NHS campaigners & Harry's son, John Smith, about the crisis facing the NHS after 11 years of underfunding. What would life without the NHS be like and what we can do to protect it?
Harry Leslie Smith was called the "the world's oldest rebel." He grew up in the Great Depression and served in World War Two. At the age of 86 he became an unlikely voice for social justice and against austerity. His son John Smith joins me to talk about his legacy.
This is an excerpt from the book that I am writing about Harry Leslie Smith, my father. It is about the last 10 years of his life as well as the cancer I was diagnosed with after he died.
Welcome to the walk a mile in my shoes podcast, I'm your host, Chris Young, and in this episode I speak with John Smith…the son of Harry Leslie Smith author of ‘Harry's last stand' and ‘Don't let my past be your future' a warning that if we allow the continued growth of poverty alongside the reduction of the welfare state in our lovely country, then the suffering he experienced during the great depression won't be far away. These are shoes we definitely don't want to walk in John is continuing his father's work - raising awareness of corporate and political greed and corruption wherever he finds it. In 2004, a group of liberal comedians and commentators came together to break the conservative monopoly on talk radio. The result was the ill-fated Air America. We watched the candid 2005 HBO documentary LEFT OF THE DIAL to analyze what went wrong. PLUS: Luke reflects on the passing of Harry Leslie Smith. Thank you to listener Will Chapman for the suggestion. Also, apologies that one of the hosts keeps mistaking Randhi Rhodes' name as "Randhi Reid." It was a late night, folks. Gary Lachman is the guest on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. He is the author of several books and has lectured across the United States, Britain and Europe on the relationship between consciousness, esoteric knowledge, politics, history and culture. He is perhaps best known as a founding member of the New York new wave band Blondie, in which he played bass from 1975 to 1977. His new book is Dark Star Rising: Magick and Power in the Age of Trump. During this episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Gary and Chauncey discuss mass psychology and how symbols and other types of images and narratives influence emotion, Trump's power over his followers, the concept of synchronicity and "magic", and the ways that Vladimir Putin has been able to recreate reality for the Russian people with the goal of expanding Russian empire. Gary also explains the deep connections between the occult and esoteric knowledge as practiced by such figures as Stephen Bannon and the so-called "alt-right" movement. In this week's episode, Chauncey DeVega comments on the anti-climactic meeting in Helsinki where Donald Trump publicly betrays the United States to his handler and boss Vladimir Putin. And at the end of this week's show Chauncey shares a warning from Harry Leslie Smith, who is 94-years-old and a veteran of the RAF in World War 2 and also a writer for The Guardian, about the rise of Trumpism and right-wing authoritarian movements around the world.
"Keep It" is pop culture writer Ira Madison's way to say "No thanks" to, well, anything. Also: Breasts Unbound on everyone's favorite body part, Seeing White on the history of race, and Harry Leslie Smith on being a 95-year-old podcaster.
Harry Leslie Smith has seen it all. World War, huge technological change, and massive social upheaval. He's had a family, a successful career in business, and busy post-retirement life advocating for social justice. Now, at age of 94, you'd expect that Harry would be content to rest on his laurels; to simply sit back and reflect on a life well-lived. But instead, he continues to fight for equality, with regular speaking engagements, a new book, and a podcast. On this episode of Relate, the story of what drives Harry Leslie Smith to reach across generations to help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.

THE VIRAL EDITION A full sized episode, but with a minimalist edit. Other than cutting out some silences and (hopefully) all of the coughs and sniffles. We didn’t want to have the episode go unreleased. It it is a bit of a look under the hood. You definitely get to see some of the uglier part of our process. This is going to either be fun for you or awful. We respect your time, and hopefully this is a fun one, and maybe a return to the old days, in terms of the banter and chemistry. Harry Leslie Smith’s Last Stand Tour https://www.gofundme.com/harrys-last-stand-tour A couple in Calgary, Canada sit down after each 2. Bundesliga matchday to discuss their mutual love of the beautiful game's most punk rock club, FC St. Pauli of Hamburg, Germany, occasionally with interjections of pop-culture, news and politics.
My name is Harry Leslie Smith. My life is at eventide because I will be 95 in February 2018. For close to one hundred years, I have witnessed humanity at its best and worst. And right now in this present age, mankind is in one of its most difficult stages. It’s why I need your help today, so that I can complete the last great challenge of my existence before old age consumes me. I am one of the last few remaining voices left from a generation of men and women who built a better society for our children and grandchildren out of the horrors of the Second World War as well as the hunger of the Great Depression. Sadly, that world my generation helped build on a foundation of decency and fair play is being swept away by neo liberalism and the greed of the 1% which has brought discord around the globe. Today, the western world stands at it’s most dangerous juncture since the 1930s.
Harry Leslie Smith reads from his recently published book Don't Let My Past Be Your Future Britain is at its most dangerous juncture since Harry's youth - the NHS and social housing are in crisis, whilst Brexit and an unpopular government continue to divide the country - but there is hope. Just as Clement Attlee provided hope in 1945, Labour's triumphant comeback of June 2017 is a beacon of light in this season of discontent. Britain has overcome adversity before and will do so again - a new nation will be forged from the ashes of grave injustice.
In the fourth episode of Harry's Last Stand. Harry Leslie Smith talks about the UK General Election, the dangers of nuclear war, the suffering caused by Tory austerity. Harry Leslie Smith also reflects on how spring always makes him remember the last days of the Second World War, when he along with an RAF unit crossed into a dying Nazi Germany.
In Episode 3 of Harry's Last Stand, 94 year old Harry Leslie Smith calls out to Britain to register to vote for the upcoming General Election. He warns against the cynical politics of the Tories that has divided Britain. He speaks about his past 80 years ago, and how in a time before the NHS, his eldest sister Marion died a horrific death from TB in a work house infirmary. He warns that his past can become your future.
In October 1929, Wall Street crashed and the greatest depression the world had ever seen began. Harry Leslie Smith tells Witness his story of growing up in extreme poverty in the north of England, and how his sister died of TB in a workhouse infirmary, too poor for proper medical care.
