Danny and Derek welcome to the program Luke Savage, writer at Jacobin and host of the Michael and Us podcast, to talk about this week's election in Canada. They delve into why Justin Trudeau ultimately resigned, Liberal Party candidate Mark Carney, how Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative Party are handling Trump, the US threatening Canada's sovereignty, the political salience of Trump's tariffs and how they might affect Canada's economy, the state of the Canadian left, the Bloc Québécois, and more. Even as he imposes authoritarianism on the United States, Donald Trump has given a new lease on life to the center left in many other countries. Canada is holding an election at the end of April under the shadow of the American presidents threat to turn it into the 51st state. Until Trump's inauguration, the Conservative Party of Canada had a commanding lead. But voters are changing their minds fast and it now looks like the Liberal Party under new leader Mark Carney will win the election. To talk about the quick revolution in Canadian politics I spoke to Luke Savage, a widely published journalist and substracker. We take up not just Canada's likely rejection of Trumpism but also the question of whether Carney's technocratic centrism really offers an alternative. If there is to be a new Canadian nationalism, will it have more substance than Carney offers?Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Matt Bruenig and Luke Savage join Ben Burgis to talk about their reviews of Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson's book, "Abundance," and what it all signifies about the drift of contemporary liberalism. Before that, Ben does an Opening Argument about why we should reject the false dichotomy of having to either support Donald Trump's "liberation day" insanity or neoliberal free-trade absolutism. For the first time since 2021, the Liberals are beating the Conservatives in a recent poll. We'll find out on March 9th if Carney is officially sticking around for the long haul. And then? He's going to be the Prime Minister - at least for a little while. Carney-mania is going around - is it real? Or seriously overblown? Is he Canada's Kamala Harris - mild, overhyped, and fated to lose - or a serious contender? Host Noor Azrieh and Luke Savage try to diagnose what's behind Carney-mania– how a socially conscious banker became the man of the moment. And the latest, on the ongoing saga of Trump's tariffs. Also, King Charles's sit-down with PM Justin Trudeau over “matters of importance” to Canadians. And BREAKING NEWS, Donald Trump doesn't like Chrystia Freeland or Pierre Poilievre. Happy Monday! Emma speaks with Tracy Rosenthal, writer and organizer, to discuss her recent book Abolish Rent: How Tenants Can End The Housing Crisis, co-authored with Leonardo Vilchis. Then, she speaks with Luke Savage, writer based in Toronto, author of The Dead Center: Reflections On Liberalism And Democracy After the End Of History, to discuss the state of play in Canadian politics as the elections inch closer. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's massive gutting of the FAA, another plane crash in the US, Musk's access to IRS data, DOGE's privacy violations, Trump's attacks on the NPS, HUD, and IRS, Trump's NLRB, Utah's ban on collective bargaining for public sector employees, Hamas' release of hostages, Trump's support for Israel, Trump's threat to education funding, Trump's request to Romania, and major flooding in Kentucky, before watching Mark Levine get Mike Johnson to fully bend the knee to the incel Musk regime. Tracy Rosenthal then joins, briefly touching on her introduction to organizing and her evolution to helping found the LA Tenants Union in 2015 before diving deeper into the massive growth of the renter population (amid dropping homeownership rates) to the point of producing tenant-majority cities. Expanding on this, Rosenthal and Emma unpack the importance of tenant organizing as a source of community power amid the increasing immiseration of the Trump regime, walking through the role landlords played in bolstering his many conspiracies around crime and immigration, and touching on the insane wealth the industry generates. After expanding on the complete normalization of homelessness under capitalism, Tracy steps back to parse the essential role land ownership played in the founding of the US, with the practice of “eviction” central to our practices of ethnic cleansing and playing an important role in aligning white settlers with the state, while the concept of the vote was entirely tethered to a white man's claims to land. Tracy and Emma also assess the insanity of the rent boom over the last decade, with millions putting a majority of their income into keeping a roof over their head, wrapping up the interview with a discussion on what tenant organizing looks like and the importance of getting involved. Luke Savage then joins, jumping right into the recent boost Canada's Trudeau-less Liberal Party has gotten at the hands of Trump's nativist tirades in recent weeks, stepping back to briefly assess the rise and fall of Justin Trudeau from liberal icon to voter anathema, before digging deeper into the rise of the Conservative party over the last couple of election cycles amid COVID and a major Cost of Living crisis, and assessing the strength of their lead before Trump assumed office. After walking through some of the major MAGA-esque players involved in the rise of the Tories, and why the majority of them have acquiesced to Trump's attacks, Savage and Emma wrap up the free half by exploring the likely successor to Trudeau as liberal leader, and what that will mean for a (potentially) impending election. And in the Fun Half: Emma unpacks the insanity of Josh Shapiro's pledge to “work with Republicans” to “aggressively cut taxes,” watches Chris Dols, an Army Corps engineer and union leader, unpack Elon's attack on federal workers, and Jim from Portland calls in to update us on his ongoing graphic novel Kickstarter “F*ck Billionaires.” Hakeem Jeffries says Eric Adams should have the chance to “make his case” to New Yorkers that being in Trump's pocket is okay, actually, Mike Gallagher reveals the reality behind the US TikTok ban, JD Vance pisses off some Germans, and Helen from the Twin Cities discusses debate tactics. Matt Walsh dissects the fundamental differences between Men (need quests) and Women (could never handle a quest), plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with writer Luke Savage, writer based in Toronto, author of The Dead Center: Reflections On Liberalism And Democracy After the End Of History, to discuss the current state of Canadian politics. Then, she speaks with Jeff Stein, White House economics reporter at The Washington Post, to discuss his recent multi-part series on economic sanctions for the Post entitled "The Money War." First, Emma runs through updates on the GOP's continuing dysfunction over their spending bill, Trump's prosecution in Georgia, the Wall Street Journal's major report on Biden staffers' extensive work to downplay and hide the state of Biden's mental decline since 2019, the nomination of Pete Hegseth, Amazon teamsters' strike, South Carolina's attack on Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood, Israeli's continuing offensives in Lebanon and Gaza, the repatriation of the final inmates in Guantanamo Bay, and the confirmed appearance Bird Flu in the US, before diving a little deeper into “President Musk's” public pressure campaign to get GOP Congresspeople in line with his spending plan. Luke Savage then joins, diving right into the dwindling support for Trudeau's administration in the wake of a weak, nationalist-oriented response to Trump's threat of tariffs against Canada, unpacking the growing dissent from within his coalition before Savage and Emma briefly contrast his response to Trump's threats with that from the US' other neighbor-under-threat in Mexico's President Sheinbaum. Stepping back, Luke examines the rise and fall of Trudeau as the leader of the Liberal Party in Canada, coming to power by leading a major win in 2015 and becoming a hyper-public anti-Trump resistance figure in the process, only for growing economic issues coming out of the COVID-19 Pandemic alongside a poor choice by Trudeau to call for snap elections in 2021 putting the Liberal Party in an insecure situation and forcing a deal with the NDP social democrats. Moving forward in the story, Savage walks Emma through the lingering struggles Liberals have faced in the wake of this deal, with their (and Trudeau's, in particular) refusal to acknowledge the ongoing cost of living crisis and the failures of their economic agenda significantly dragging down NDP's public standing to the point of pulling out of the deal this past September, issues capitalized on by a Conservative Party that is, at the bare minimum, willing to recognize the issues facing the Canadian electorate. After expanding on the role of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, his success in hiding his unpopular faux-populist crypto-libertarianism behind direct, issues-based communication, and the pretty clear parallels with Biden and Democrats' recent failures in the 2024 election, Savage wraps up by tackling Canada's dearth of an actual system to remove someone like Trudeau from power, and how this situation could (and is likely to) develop. Jeff Stein then joins, jumping right into his extensive research at the Washington Post into the explosion of the role of sanctions in US foreign policy, and the vast material impact they have on local populations, first outlining how this policy proliferated in the wake of the serious backlash to US military intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan – with Joe Biden taking Trump's expansion of the sanction regime to an entirely new level after Russia's invasion of Ukraine – and how it aligns with the increasing power of the executive branch. Stepping back, Stein walks Emma through the role sanctions play in avoiding both military AND diplomatic intervention on the global stage, despite minimal evidence of their efficacy, and the growing worry inside of government of their long-term impacts with limited short-term benefits, before they wrap up with the myriad material issues that have arisen from the expansion of the US sanction regime, with devastating effects on the abused and exploited populations that these sanctions are ostensibly issued in response to, alongside the (less devastating) unforeseen financial costs to US taxpayers. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder as they do a deep dive into the recent Wall Street Journal report tracing Biden's staffers' extensive efforts – beginning in 2019 – to hide and disguise Biden's mental decline from the public, before touching on the continuing cult of senility around Biden. A Jersey caller unpacks breaking through the media's commitment to Democratic leadership, Alex from Oakland unpacks Biden's plan to encourage AI data centers on federal land, and the MR Crew explores the NYPD's ongoing crackdown on Amazon teamsters' labor action. The Shuffle Bois are joined by Luke Savage (https://x.com/LukewSavage) and Will Sloan (https://x.com/WillSloanEsq) of Michael and Us to describe the least important election of the 2000s. Given that it's the only presidential election since 1988 in which a Republican candidate won the popular vote, much of the episode is dedicated to the analysis of the greatest Democratic Party loser of all time, John Kerry. They also discuss some of the big themes of the election, including the pathetic loserdom of John Kerry, the rehashing of 1960s counter culture, and the increasing role of the internet in presidential campaigning. Huge shoutout to our guests for coming on the pod! Be sure to check out Michael and Us (https://x.com/MichaelandUs) and Important Cinema Club (https://x.com/ImprtCinemaClub)!

For decades, a cottage industry flourished in the subterranean depths of the American music industry: send a company your poem, and, for a fee, they'll turn it into a song. Maybe the song will even be your entryway into the industry and the Billboard charts! But most assuredly it will not be. Was this industry exploitative? Did it produce art? What even is "art" anyway? Against the backdrop of the incredibly boring 2000 election, the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman went on a cross-country journey to see if George W. Bush or Al Gore represented America. Ed Broadbent died January 11, 2024. Suzi speaks with the co-authors of Ed's recent book, Seeking Social Democracy: Seven Decades in the Fight for Equality. We also hear clips from Ed during his long political career.Ed was the very popular leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) in Canada, first elected to the House of Commons in 1968 from Oshawa, Ontario, and always at the forefront of the parliamentary struggle for democratic socialism. Ed was also Vice President of the Socialist International. In 2011, he founded the Broadbent Institute, a think tank. Seeking Social Democracy: Seven Decades in the Fight for Equality isn't a memoir per se: Ed thought most political memoirs ended up being self-serving and self-justifying. He wanted to discuss the ideas he tried to exemplify and win while he was leader of the NDP in Parliament and afterwards with the Broadbent Institute. To do this, he engaged in dialogue with three collaborators, Carleton University Professor Frances Abele, policy analyst Jonathan Sas, and Jacobin writer Luke Savage, each from different generations. They dive deep into the theory and practice of social democracy. In the postscript to the book, Ed leaves us with an enduring vision and his hopes for what is to be done to build the good society for today and the future. He writes: "To be humane, societies must be democratic—and to be democratic, every person must be afforded the economic and social rights necessary for their individual flourishing... Social democracy alone offers the foundation upon which the lives of people everywhere can be made dignified, just, and exciting."Jacobin Radio with Suzi Weissman features conversations with leading thinkers and activists, with a focus on labor, the economy, and protest movements.
