Born in Belgium in 1954 to conservative, Catholic parents, Lucy Sante migrated to New York in the 1960s, where she became associated with the Bohemian artistic milieu of the city. After producing several highly acclaimed works of history such as Low Life and The Other Paris and translating Félix Fénéon's feuilletons for NYRB as Novels in Three Lines, she announced in 2021 that she was transitioning: ‘Yes, I've known since at least age 11 but probably earlier and yes, I suppressed and denied it for decades', she wrote at the time. In I Heard Her Call My Name (Hutchinson Heinemann), ‘a generous, fearlessly revealing book' (Samantha Hunt), she describes with great grace, wit and humility her decision to begin living the life she knew was truly hers.Sante is in conversation about her memoir with writer and filmmaker Juliet Jacques. Delano's Top of the Week returned today after a bank holiday break last week. Joining Tom on the show was Cordula Schnuer who came in to talk about the review to Luxembourg's national energy and climate plan which the government will be presenting this afternoon (Monday 17th April). All EU countries had to submit such a plan to the European Commission in 2019. They set out how they will achieve the EU's goal to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050. That also includes targets to increase the share of renewable energies from 11% in 2020 to 25% by 2030 and to increase energy efficiency resulting in a reduction of demand between 40 to 44%, for example by improving insulation of homes. It's mandatory under the EU strategy for each member country to submit an updated version of the plan by 30 June this year. That is meant to give countries an opportunity to set more ambitious targets, take into account the latest research and findings, for example from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (the IPCC). Later this afternoon the prime minister together with the ministers for the economy, energy, and environment, climate and sustainability will present the draft update. That should already include input, for example from the citizens' climate council that was convened last year and where a group of 100 people developed proposals and recommendations for the government on how to tackle the climate crisis. But the document as a whole must also be opened for public consultation so that NGOs or institutional players like industry and business federations can submit their opinions. But also any regular citizen can comment and leave their remarks. For the first version, it was 328 people and 30 NGOs and other groups who gave their feedback. Cordula started her event recommendations by reminding listeners that today is the last day for foreign nationals living in Luxembourg to register to vote in the upcoming municipal elections. She also recommends: Wednesday 19 April: Django Bates' Belovèd. Django Bates in a British jazz pianist who teams up with a double bass and drums for his jazz trip Belovèd. They are playing at the Philharmonie from 7.30pm with an artists talk just before the performance from 7pm. Saturday 22 April: Open day of Luxembourg's institutions. You can visit parliament, different ministries, the state council, the central bank. It's an opportunity to look inside some beautiful and historic buildings in Luxembourg that aren't otherwise accessible to the public. It's also an opportunity to meet with lawmakers and public officials. Also on 22 April at 4pm: Lecture by Juliet Jacques, a writer and filmmaker based in London on transgender lives and representation at Mudam. Hosted in the framework of an exhibition by US transgender artist Tourmaline. There's no extra fee for the lecture but you have to pay entrance to the museum. Her personal pick was a book: The Brutish Museums - The Benin Bronzes, Colonial Violence and Cultural Restitution.

We will revisit the section when Juliet comes back! -------- This week, we're joined by writer and broadcaster Juliet Jacques (@zinovievletter) to talk about the "Very British Problems" twitter account. Set up in 2012, the extremely popular account posts mundane observations of British life (milky tea, not being able to stop saying please), but, like everything in 2012, it is largely a fantasy. We talk about how VBP and the media empire it spawned, became the ideological backdrop for the FBPE movement, and that in 2021, it exists as a strange place in which its supporters and followers lament what Britain either was, or what it should have been, had it not been for Brexit. We also talk about Spoonerisation (changing initials of names) and the shorter half lives of insults and funny put-downs on the internet, making the case that perhaps spoonerising....might not be funny any more? -------- You can follow Juliet's work by following her at @zinovievletter, or through her website: www.julietjacques.com.  -------- Ten Thousand Posts is a show about how everything is posting. Juliet Jacques joins PTO to talk about her debut collection of short stories, Variations. Inspired by found material and real-life events, the book explores the history of transgenderism in Britain, from the time of the Oscar Wilde trial to the second decade of the 2000s. We talked about why Juliet chose to use fiction to address the history of trans, the feelings of responsibility that come with describing the experiences of characters based on the lives of real people who lived, loved and suffered, and we also talked about the work of the sexologist Havelock Ellis who plays a prominent part in one of the stories.

Oriana continues her conversation with the author and filmmaker Juliet Jacques whose work challenges mainstream misconceptions of trans identity. They discuss Jacques' film "You will be Free" which ruminates on the positives and negatives of facing death. Not only does the film say everything she thinks about life in ten minutes, but certain lines of it make her cry. They also discuss Jacques' relationship to masculinity, femininity, nonbinary gender identity and feminism.  Oriana Fox is an artist with a PhD in self-disclosure. I was delighted to be joined by Juliet Jacques, who is a writer, film maker, and one of our leading cultural commentators. We talked about her latest book Variations which is her debut short story collection. She uses uses fiction inspired by found material and real-life events to explore the history of transgender Britain. Juliet very kindly agreed to do a reading for us where she tells the story of a press intrusion into the life of Laura, a model and actress in the 1950s. We also talk about the transphobia and 'trans discourse' in the mainstream media (and how stupid and reductive this often is) and how the role of fiction and story telling might be a compelling and creative alternative. Oriana speaks with writer and filmmaker Juliet Jacques whose work poses a challenge to mainstream misunderstandings about trans lives. She has done this by putting her own stories in print through a blog in The Guardian, in her book Trans: A Memoir and through a new collection of short stories called Variations, which came out on 17 June. Speaking about her pivot to fiction, Jacques posits that telling a big lie, i.e. 'this is not true', has the benefit of allowing for but importantly not obliging truthfulness. Indeed, Jacques has disclosed a lot, but she is also quite particular about where she draws the line. To give some examples, she starts her memoir with a vivid account of her surgical transition and she's happy to disclose the circumstances under which she discovered that her clitoris worked, but she won't put her love life on the internet. So if you're curious to understand the rationale behind these choices, take a listen. Oriana Fox is an artist with a PhD in self-disclosure. In this month’s Resonance 104.4fm show, former co-host Tom Overton returns to interview Suite (212)’s founder, Juliet Jacques, about Variations, her new collection of stories that tells a potted history of trans and non-binary people in the United Kingdom from the Victorian era to the present, published by Influx Press on 17 June 2021. They talk about how Juliet moved on from her ‘Transgender Journey’ series for the Guardian and her memoir, Trans, that came out of it in 2015; why she chose to write Variations as short stories rather than as a novel, or a more straightforward British trans history, or make it as a film; the different forms she uses in each story, and her research processes; how postmodern approaches have intersected with prejudice to make the compilation of trans histories more difficult; how Variations looks at trans people’s complex relationships with industrialisation, law, sexology and media, as well as literature, music and film; the context of a British – and global – backlash against trans visibility and rights as she wrote the book; the absence of trans authors and authentic trans characters from literary history, the influences on her work and the uses of trans writers telling trans stories; and what Juliet might write next. “It just felt completely natural to me that as long as there were gender roles there would be people who transcended them.” Juliet Jacques. In today’s episode British Library curator Polly Russell is joined by writer and filmmaker Juliet to explore how transgender lives have been represented in the press, in law and in culture throughout the ages. Because for transgender women in the UK and around the world, there is no finished business. Whether it’s access to healthcare, high suicide rates or being faced with violence on the streets, the issues trans people face are far from sorted. So Polly and Juliet are learning about queer stories from the from 20th Century with academic Alison Oram, getting inspired by political activist Christine Burns MBE and chatting to writer Kuchenga about how things stand today. Please note this episode contains explicit language and conversations about suicide. A Pixiu production.
