Today we're honored to share a special session from Restore 2025 featuring Steven Kapp Perry, Alisha Anderson, and Ben Schilaty—three gay Latter-day Saints who have each taken different paths, and who share a deep commitment to following God with honesty, courage, and faith. In this on-stage conversation, Steve, Alisha, and Ben share personal and vulnerable reflections on what it means to seek God when the road ahead feels uncertain, and the courage it takes to keep moving forward in faith. They explore belonging, revelation, and the complexity of spiritual life as they describe discerning and following paths that looked very different from one another's and the ones they once expected—often amid the pain of being misunderstood. This session was a powerful reminder that God is at work in every life, and that each person's journey is sacred. As Ben shares near the end of the conversation, "The stories that truly matter are the stories of the LGBTQ people that you know in your lives." That's our invitation this month. We hope this conversation opens the door to deeper connection with people in your own life whose paths may look different than your own. We're grateful to Steve, Alisha, and Ben for their vulnerability and wisdom. You'll hear Steve mention a short film at the beginning of this session that tells more of Alisha's story. It's beautiful and moving, and you can watch it here. You can also watch a video recording of this session, including a musical performance from Steve and his wife, on our YouTube channel or Substack. You can order Ben's book A Walk in My Shoes here.Join us on July 11 for the Wayfare festival! RSVP here.

Top Gun turns 40, and we can't talk about it without talking about the soundtrack that still punches through your speakers. From the first seconds of Kenny Loggins' “Danger Zone” on the aircraft carrier, we trace how 80s movie music uses needle drops to build character, tension, romance, and pure momentum. We get into the details that make the Top Gun soundtrack legendary: the way the Righteous Brothers' “You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'” revives an older classic for a new generation, how Berlin's “Take My Breath Away” becomes a musical signature for Maverick and Charlie, and why “Great Balls of Fire” remains one of the most unforgettable bar-scene singalongs in film. We also swap quick takes on the movie itself, the sequel callbacks, and why sometimes the music ages even better than the action. Then we jump into our Music in My Shoes picks and stories, including a huge milestone for the show: listeners in 100 countries. Along the way we hit The Kinks, The Doors, Peter Frampton's live-album magic, the Psychedelic Furs “Pretty in Pink” re-recording drama, Robert Palmer's “Addicted to Love” and the power of MTV-era visuals, plus a billion-views moment for the Outfield's “Your Love” and a spring break memory that drilled it into one of our brains forever. Wrap it up with No Doubt's “Just a Girl” and the eternal question of what you love hearing versus what you'd actually put on your own playlist. If you like music history, Billboard chart trivia, and the stories behind the songs, subscribe, share this with a friend who wore out their Top Gun cassette, and leave a review so more listeners can find us.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldPlease like and follow the Music in My Shoes Facebook and Instagram pagesReach out to us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.comSend us a one-way message. Steadman's storyProduced by Eloise Stevens. In 1981, Black communities in Brixton rose up in bloody confrontation with the Met Police – against a backdrop of racism, severe economic recession and high unemployment. They followed on from similar events in Bristol the year before, and the summer of ‘81 brought further uprisings across England – including in Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds. It was a critical moment in the movement for social justice in Britain, leading to landmark recommendations for police reform and local regeneration policies, as well as, crucially, a new sense of Black British empowerment.A Mile in My Shoes: 81 Uprisings brings together stories from people who were there at the time, and who felt the reverberations through homes, streets, and communities across the country – in ways we all still live with today. Each storyteller has donated a pair of their shoes, which you are invited to step into for an empathic journey that might change how you see the world.Produced by The Empathy Museum and created with 81 Acts of Exuberant Defiance and the The Ubele Initiative, this series was made possible by the National Heritage Lottery Fund. Ben Schilaty, a former BYU Honor Code administrator, is a social work professor and author who discusses his life as a gay Latter-day Saint. He details his professional background, and his current work with the Gather Conference. Schilaty shares his personal faith journey, explaining how he reconciles his sexual orientation with his commitment to the Church through prayer and personal revelation. He advocates for radical empathy and honoring the individual agency of LGBTQ members, whether they choose to stay in or leave the faith. Throughout the conversation, he emphasizes the importance of sincere listening and building supportive communities where diverse experiences are validated. https://youtu.be/EzjYxEAfsYs Don’t miss our other LDS Faith Journeys: https://gospeltangents.com/tag/lds-faith-journeys/ Ben Schilaty: Navigating Faith and Identity Ben Schilaty is a professor of social work at Utah Valley University and author of A Walk in My Shoes. He shared a deeply personal look at his life as a gay Latter-day Saint. Schilaty, who humorously describes himself as “fame-ish” due to the parasocial relationships readers and listeners have formed with him, offers a unique perspective on the intersection of faith, identity, and belonging. Journey of Three Stages Ben describes his internal journey in three distinct phases. In his 20s, he felt “broken” and believed he needed to be “fixed” to fit the mold of a traditional Latter-day Saint marriage. In his early 30s, the pendulum swung, and he felt that if he couldn’t change, perhaps the Church had to change. Today, he focuses on “living in what is,” a practice of accepting reality as it is to find health and happiness. A pivotal moment in this journey occurred when Ben nearly left the Church after a painful heartbreak. Despite his parents' full support and their promise to honor his agency regardless of his choice, a prayerful encounter with Matthew 26 changed his path. Reflecting on Christ's prayer in Gethsemane, Ben felt a “clear and very annoying prompting” that his “cup” was to live his life within the teachings of the Church—a choice that transformed his religious practice from a burden into something life-giving. BYU Honor Code Providing a rare look into his four years as an Honor Code administrator at BYU, Ben dispels common myths about the office. While many assume the office is preoccupied with “morality” or LGBTQ+ issues, Ben notes that same-sex romantic behavior reports were uncommon, occurring only about ten times a year. Instead, the vast majority of his work involved academic dishonesty, plagiarism, and timecard theft. Building Bridges: The Gather Conference Ben is a co-founder of the Gather conference, a Christ-centered support system for LGBTQ+ Latter-day Saints and their allies. He describes it as a “middle space” compared to other organizations like Affirmation or Northstar. Gather serves a diverse group—about 80-90% of whom are active in the Church—including those in same-sex marriages, those choosing celibacy, and parents or leaders seeking to understand their loved ones better. Radical Acceptance and the Power of Story A major theme of the discussion was radical acceptance and honoring the agency of others. Ben emphasizes that: Listening is a Christlike act: Allies should listen to and validate the pain of those who feel they must leave the Church for their mental health. Forgiveness brings peace: Ben shared a powerful story of inviting a former Stake President over for dinner to find personal peace after a disagreement regarding his temple recommend. Prescription for Revelation: He warns against using his story as a “blueprint” for others, noting that God speaks to us as individuals and we each have our own “prescription” for personal revelation. Ben’s final invitation to the audience is simple: instead of just reading his book or listening to his podcast, invite the LGBTQ+ people in your own life to tell you their stories. The day the world stopped to listen. July 13, 1985 stands as a pivotal moment when music transcended entertainment to become a global force for humanitarian change. Live Aid connected London's Wembley Stadium and Philadelphia's JFK Stadium through groundbreaking satellite technology, reaching nearly 2 billion viewers. What made Live Aid revolutionary wasn't just its scale but its immediacy. Unlike Woodstock or other historic concerts we experience through curated footage, Live Aid happened in real-time before our eyes. From Status Quo kicking off with "Rockin' All Over The World" to the "We are the World" finale, we witnessed music history unfiltered—technical glitches, microphone failures, and all. This raw authenticity created an unprecedented shared global experience. The performances ranged from career-defining triumphs to disappointing reunions. U2 transformed from cult favorites to superstars with their electrifying 11-minute rendition of "Bad," featuring Bono's spontaneous rescue of a fan from the crushing crowd. Queen delivered what many consider rock's greatest live performance, with Freddie Mercury commanding 72,000 people like a conductor before his orchestra. Phil Collins made the impossible happen—performing in London, flying on the Concorde to New York, and helicoptering to Philadelphia to play with Eric Clapton and Led Zeppelin all in the same day.Beyond raising millions for Ethiopian famine relief, Live Aid fundamentally changed how we understand music's potential impact. It created the blueprint for benefit concerts that continues today, proving that artists could mobilize massive global action. Four decades later, in our fragmented media landscape, Live Aid's achievement seems even more remarkable—a singular moment when music united humanity across continents, cultures, and borders for a cause greater than ourselves.Music in My Shoes" where music and memories intertwine.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldPlease like and follow the Music in my Shoes Facebook and Instagram pages and share the podcast with friends on your social media. What happens when lifelong fandom meets musical opportunity? Matt Hughes knows firsthand. Having grown up purchasing Black Sabbath albums, Matt eventually found himself trading guitar solos with Tony Iommi and jamming alongside Bill Ward through Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp experiences that transformed his relationship with music. The most remarkable chapters of Matt's story revolve around Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp, which he describes as "life-changing." Through this innovative program, musicians of all skill levels get to perform with rock legends. For Matt, this meant playing Hendrix's "Hey Joe" with Bill Ward and Lita Ford, and later receiving "the nod" from Tony Iommi to take a guitar solo during Black Sabbath's "Into the Void." These surreal moments—capped by Iommi gifting him a guitar pick—illustrate how the boundaries between fan and musician can beautifully blur.As we anticipate Black Sabbath and Ozzy's final performance together in Birmingham on July 5, 2025, Matt's experiences offer a unique perspective on music's power to create meaningful connections across decades. His story reminds us that passion, persistence, and a willingness to participate can transform our relationship with the music and artists we love.We also look back at the Billboard Hot 100 Chart from July 13, 1985. Ever had a concert experience so powerful it stays with you for decades? Those magical nights when the music and memories fuse together to create something truly unforgettable? That's what we're exploring in this deeply nostalgic journey through legendary concert moments. We kick things off with spontaneous concert adventures from the pre-internet era. Remember when buying tickets meant physically going to a record store and getting whatever seats they handed you? Jim recounts how an impulse decision led to witnessing U2's iconic ‘The Unforgettable Fire' tour at Madison Square Garden in 1985, while Jimmy shares his technique for sneaking into better seats at Atlanta's Omni arena. The narrative shifts to one of rock's most celebrated collaborations - the night jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis joined the Grateful Dead at Nassau Coliseum in 1990. What began as one song invitation turned into an entire set of improvisation that produced some of the Dead's most transcendent music. We then travel to spring 1995 for a poignant look at Jerry Garcia's final tour. Despite his weakened voice, these Atlanta and Tampa shows represent the last opportunity I had to see the legendary guitarist before his untimely death. The episode isn't just concert tales - it's filled with fascinating musical connections across generations. From The Who's power chords on "I Can't Explain" to Billy Bragg borrowing Simon & Garfunkel's lyrics, we trace the lineage of influence that keeps music in constant conversation with itself.Have you experienced a concert moment that changed everything? The legendary sounds of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)" come alive as we explore this revolutionary anthem that dominated airwaves and captivated a generation in 1980. This cultural phenomenon wasn't just a song – it was everywhere, playing in homes, game rooms, and wherever young people gathered to shout "We don't need no education!"Delving into the innovative construction of the track, we unpack how Pink Floyd boldly incorporated a disco beat at a time when the genre was fading, creating something utterly transcendent with David Gilmour's guitar work and that unforgettable children's choir. The conceptual origins of "The Wall" reveal Roger Waters' growing alienation from audiences, which sparked his radical idea to build an actual wall between band and crowd during performances. Our musical journey through March 1980 continues with explorations of Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker," Van Halen's "Women and Children First" album, The Cure's "A Forest," and Rush's "Spirit of Radio." Each track represents the incredible boundary-pushing innovation happening across music as a new decade dawned.Whether you're rediscovering these classics or hearing these stories for the first time, this episode connects personal memories with musical milestones in ways that will have you reaching for your air guitar – or perhaps practicing your air drums with the proper technique! Justin's Song of the Week is Elvis's 1970 version of Joe South's plea for empathy and understanding, "Walk A Mile in My Shoes." Our primary resource for this episode was the content contained within the Follow That Dream release "That's The Way It Is: 50th Anniversary Collectors Edition" including the book by David English and Pal Granlund.  Don't forget that the Netflix documentary "Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley" releases today, November 13, 2024 on Netflix. Last month the city of Minneapolis broke up one of the area's largest homeless camps. More than 100 people had been living in tents and other temporary structures at Camp Nenookaasi for months. The encampment is just one of many signs that an increasing number of people in Minnesota are living without stable shelter. People without housing are also riding Metro Transit buses and trains to find safety and warmth. They're sleeping in out-of-the-way corners of the skyways and living in their cars.  The reasons for the rise in unsheltered people are complex, and government and social services are struggling to respond. Last week, a faith-based organization in Ramsey County announced it would start putting up people in area churches to help house some of the families who are overwhelming Hennepin County's emergency shelter program.MPR News host Angela Davis talks about why we're seeing a rise in visible homelessness and possible solutions.Guests:  Monica Nilsson has operated street outreach, shelter and housing programs in the Twin Cities area for 30 years. She serves on the boards of Trellis, a housing developer and property manager of 5000 units throughout Minnesota, Mile in My Shoes, whose mission is collective transformation through running and reducing social isolation and Peace House.Sgt. Beverly Rodriguez oversees the Metro Transit Police Department's Homeless Action Team. She and three outreach officers patrol buses, trains and transit centers and connect people without shelter to emergency shelter, housing vouchers and other resources.  Milton Manning is a U.S. Navy veteran who once experienced homelessness. He currently serves as a justice consultant for the state's Interagency Council on Homelessness and works at Peace House, a community center serving people sleeping outside and low-income adults in Minneapolis.Subscribe to the MPR News with Angela Davis podcast on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or RSS.  Use the audio player above to listen to the full conversation.

Runners are gearing up for this weekend's Twin Cities Marathon.  Participants have been training for months. They've pushed through mental and physical barriers, they've hit their strides and they're chasing a “runner's high” to the finish line.  Getting to where you can run a marathon is no easy task, and getting started as a runner can be just as daunting as a 26.2-mile goal. But you don't have to go at it alone. Running groups and running communities around Minnesota aren't just helping people run a marathon — they specialize in helping people complete their first mile.  MPR News host Angela Davis talks with three runners about the joys and pains of running. You'll hear how to get started and how to join a running community. We'll also hear from a Twin Cities organization bringing people together through running teams.  Guests:  Mishka Vertin is the co-founder and executive director of Mile in My Shoes, an organization that connects runners throughout the Twin Cities with people experiencing homelessness, in recovery or in transition from incarnation or military service through running teams.  Andrea Haus is the community and marketing manager at Mill City Running in northeast Minneapolis and Saint City Running in St Paul. These two local running shops hosts group runs and other events throughout the Twin Cities. Jena Ziegler is a physical therapist and a board-certified lymphedema specialist at Park Nicollet Rehabilitation in Maple Grove, Minn. She's also an orthopedic clinical specialist.  Subscribe to the MPR News with Angela Davis podcast on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or RSS.  Use the audio player above to listen to the full conversation.
