Betsy DeVos is the former Secretary of Education and the author of the book Hostages No More: The Fight for Education Freedom and the Future of the American Child. I hope to learn from Betsy about why school choice will improve educational outcomes. I also want to hear about how COVID changed the relationship between parents and schools, and whether some students might benefit from vocational training instead of a college track curriculum.Darren Schwartz is the What Happens Next movie critic. We are going to discuss three films. The first is the documentary Waiting for Superman which is about the success of charter schools. We will then review two classic films on teenage angst: the ridiculous and stupid comedy classic Superbad and the romantic comedy Easy A. A new AEI report found that the COVID-19 pandemic caused the largest enrollment declines in the history of American public Schools. 85 percent of school districts across the country had enrollment losses the year after the pandemic started, and almost half of districts saw declines of 3 percent, a seven-fold increase from the prior year. Why are Americans fleeing public schools? In this episode, Naomi and Ian are joined by https://betsydevos.com/ (Betsy DeVos), former secretary of education and author of the new book Hostages No More. Over the last two years, parents have witnessed school closures, mask mandates, and seen the impact of a curriculum focused more on social justice than preparing students for high levels of academic achievement. Secretary DeVos explains the flaws in the public school system that pre-date the pandemic and believes broadening school choice will return a standard of excellence to the classroom. Despite efforts in some states to return to remote learning or require masks in schools, Secretary DeVos is optimistic the public's opposition to these measures will force politicians to put the interests of families and children first. America's current education system is antiquated, wasteful, and “bent on saving and serving itself,” argues former U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. She is one of the very few department heads to have advocated for the abolition of the agency she ran. Education gaps have only widened since the establishment of the federal Department of Education under President Jimmy Carter, she says. Two years of remote learning have now put children months, if not years behind during this pandemic. “You couple the learning losses with the mental health challenges, and you have a disaster looming,” she says. DeVos is the author of the new book, “Hostages No More: The Fight for Education Freedom and the Future of the American Child.” Tonight, she breaks down creative new approaches to schooling being adopted in states like Florida and Arizona that could soon change the game for millions of children across America. We take a look at Hostages No More: The Fight for Education Freedom and the Future of the American Child by Betsy DeVos. Long before she was tapped by President Trump to serve as secretary of education, DeVos established herself as one of the country's most influential advocates for education reform, from school choice and charter schools to protecting free speech on campus. She's unflinching in standing up to the powerful interests who control and benefit from the status quo in education – which is why the unions, the media, and the radical left made her public enemy number one. Dom Giordano, WPHT host and former teacher, has dedicated much of his daily show toward parents who are taking it into their own hands to push back against school boards that have a negative impact on their children. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards. First, Giordano welcomes John Toomey, father of slain teenager Sean Toomey, to discuss his impassioned speech in Harrisburg, in which he joined with other victims of violence in Philadelphia to call for the impeachment of Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner. Then, Betsy DeVos, former United States Secretary of Education under President Trump, rejoins the podcast to discuss her new book Hostages No More: The Fight for Education Freedom and the Future of the American Child. First, Giordano reads back a quote from a New York Post article examining a proposed ban on skirts, and ties this to President Biden's stance on charter schools. DeVos expresses the benefits of charter schools, telling Giordano and listeners what they bring to the table that public schools don't. Then, Giordano and DeVos discuss DeVos' continue support for Title IX, with Dom asking for Betsy to tell what she's done for women's sports, and for an opinion on the decision by FINA to ban transgendered swimmers from competing unless they transition prior to 12 years old.

Betsy DeVos started fighting for education freedom long before arriving in Washington to serve as Cabinet secretary in President Donald Trump's administration. But what's happened in the past couple of years—prompted by COVID lockdowns and a parents' rights movement—has accelerated the opportunity to give students more options and better schools.“Everything we did was focused on doing what's right for students. And that started with talking about empowering families and students to make the choice for their right fit for education,” DeVos told The Daily Signal about her time as secretary of education. “And now with the reality of COVID, we're at a point where I think policies are going to change.”Many of those changes are already taking place in states across America. DeVos, who is the author of a new book, “Hostages No More: The Fight for Education Freedom and the Future of the American Child,” believes it's time to take even bolder steps. Just last week, she embraced the idea of eliminating the U.S. Department of Education—the federal agency she once led.Listen to our interview on The Daily Signal or read a lightly edited transcript at DailySignal.com.
