Ever wondered if conventional education is the only path to raising curious, well-educated children? Our latest episode features Keri McDonald, acclaimed author of "Unschooled: Raising Curious, Well-Educated Children Outside the Conventional Classroom," who transitioned from an economics major to a passionate advocate for homeschooling and self-directed learning. Keri's personal journey is nothing short of inspiring, as she shares how shadowing a homeschooling family completely reshaped her views on education and led her to embrace the unschooling movement for her own children in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The pandemic acted as a catalyst, pushing many parents to reconsider traditional schooling. We explore various alternative education models that have gained popularity, such as homeschooling, micro schooling, hybrid approaches, and online learning platforms. Addressing concerns about the efficacy of these methods, we draw on peer-reviewed studies to demonstrate that children educated through these alternative models often excel, particularly in entrepreneurship. You'll also gain insights into how unrealistic educational benchmarks can affect perceptions of a child's abilities, and why a non-traditional approach might just be the answer. Building a supportive community is crucial for a successful homeschooling journey, and this episode is packed with practical advice on how to find your tribe. From utilizing Facebook groups and local initiatives to understanding the landscape of micro schools, we guide you through the myriad options available to connect with like-minded families. Learn from grassroots efforts and specific examples, like those in South Florida, to navigate the burgeoning world of innovative schooling options. Whether you're new to homeschooling or a seasoned veteran, Keri's insights and our discussion will provide valuable guidance and encouragement. In this podcast episode returning guest Peter Gray, retired professor of psychology at Boston College, makes an argument for why we should consider other ways of understanding and structuring learning in and outside of school. We talk about college and access to working life, possible alternative ways of learning an occupation, David Geary's evolutionary theory of biologically primary and secondary abilities, what we need to learn and when we need to learn it, what we can observe in kids who aren't taught in the conventional ways, kids who learn to read on their own or who learn the whole math curriculum in a couple of months in their late teens, how our expectations influence learning, consequences for not reading when society expects you to, how and when children learn to walk and what we do when they don't, whining in different cultures, the summer slide, and what to say when people complain that they wish that someone had forced them to learn something earlier in life, how children's independence and autonomy relates to their mental health, how we try to fix problems by taking away children's liberty and responsibility, why we should teach them about dangers instead of trying to get rid of them, and many other topics. Even if you don't find yourself agreeing with all of Peter's arguments, we would love to hear more about what points he's making that you think are valid and worth considering. How can we let alternative views on education actually widen our current understanding of learning and schooling, instead of just assuming the worst about each other? Send un an email to larsogpaal@gmail.com, we'll be thankful to every kind of criticism, feedback and suggestions of further explorations and interviews that we should do on these topics. This may seem like an insensitive thing to point out but there is a clear advantage for kids who grow up with parents who are married. Katrina Trinko shares the politically incorrect reality about what boosts a kid's chances for success. A bottom-up reformation is taking place in education as more parents begin to exercise their right of choice in how their children are educated. Kerry McDonald explains why as education decentralizes, those who like control are getting nervous. Is MAGA something that exists beyond Donald Trump's candidacy? J.B. Shurk makes a solid case that MAGA is the new sons and daughters of liberty. One of the toughest obstacles that lovers of freedom must overcome is the public's tendency to see the control-at-all-costs agenda as something innocent. Todd Hayen takes that misconception apart nicely. Article of the Day: When Doug Casey weighs in on a subject, it's worth considering what he has to say. Here's one of the better articles you'll encounter this week. Gary M. Galles takes a closer look at so-called "weasel words" that can mislead us. Specifically, he examines the question, do I own what is mine? If doing the right thing is a higher priority than simply getting your way, you'll appreciate what Albert J. Nock had to say on the subject. Richard M. Ebeling shares his analysis of Nock's essay written nearly a century ago. The organized efforts against free speech have been regrouping since the covid hysteria has worn off. Now, Kit Knightly warns that the Israel-Hamas "war" is being used as an excuse to shut down free speech. It's no secret that many parents choose homeschooling because of the harms they perceive coming from public schools. Kerry McDonald sets late night comedian John Oliver straight on why homeschoolers don't need more regulation. The hardest part about recognizing how propagandized we are is the sense of isolation that comes with that recognition. Caitlin Johnstone reminds us, in a world ruled by propaganda, a sane worldview will necessarily be a fringe worldview. Most people would agree that if an idea is so good that it has to be compulsory, it's probably not that great of an idea. Kerry McDonald notes that compulsory schooling laws seem to be the exception and she says these laws have got to go. Life seems cheap to those who are intent on "saving the world" from humanity. J.B. Shurk makes the case for the sanctity of life and how those who cherish it are seen as a threat by those who wish to control humanity. This could spark some serious debate, but here goes: Country music has a multiple personality disorder. Nevertheless, it still speaks to America on a level that other genres don't. While the political left celebrates its anticipated destruction of Donald Trump, there's a bigger picture to keep in mind. Jeffrey A. Tucker reminds us that the emergency that began 3 years ago is not over and it's an emergency of unrestrained government. If you want a no-hold-barred take on what the Trump indictment amounts to, Tom Luongo is terrific. He says this indictment signals the end of U.S. politics. There's no shortage of controversy over what is being taught in our government schools. Jacob Hornberger offers an effective, common sense solution: separate school and state. What comes next for educating our children? Kerry McDonald says schooling was for the industrial era but unschooling is the future. The inversion of reality always starts with language. If you've been struggling to translate what the people who wish to dominate you are actually saying, this primer from M.B. Matthews should be helpful. Don't be lulled into the sense that things have finally returned to normal. C.J. Hopkins says we're living in the new normal that was meant to move us further down the road to totalitarianism. The most serious gaslighting that's happening today is being directed at those of us who clearly recall how ugly the last 3 years have been. Todd Hayen explains how the guilty parties are working overtime to convince us that our concerns are much ado about nothing. Great teachers are a blessing to any society. Contrary to conventional wisdom, they can be found in settings other than government-run schools. Kerry McDonald has a great article on why former school teachers are finding success as education entrepreneurs. Many people justify outrageously big government as being necessary in order to care for the needy and downtrodden. But is that true? Joel Lim explores how government stacks up against private charity and says that it's no contest. For a full strength dose of reality--minus the sugar coating--few writers deliver like James Howard Kunstler. His take on the showdown slowdown vote counting is worth reading. Are third parties "spoiling" elections for the two major parties? Thomas L. Before you send your child to school - listen to this podcast interview with expert home educator Kiki from "Kiki and the Wildlings" in England. I was crying during this interview..I WISH I'd met her when my children were younger. I, like most people, failed as a mainstream school mom, as a homeschooler and I hated special needs education.. both mainstream school parenting, and home education. You don't have to. Instead of trying to fit your child into a box that is claustrophobic and outdated - even for so-called "neurotypical" children, you can reclaim freedom and a peaceful childhood for your child. What we talk about in this podcast:How to get started. Now. The perfect solution for overwhelmed moms with kids who don't fit into the outdated school system. How home education honours "special interests" and could be a positive experience for your autistic child. How home education reclaims childhood and replaces the "hamsterwheel" stress with slow mornings, long walks in nature and conflict-free learning. How child-led learning takes the pressure out of life as a mom and how to wave goodbye to boring homework without sacrificing your child's learning experience. Why you don't have to "work like a teacher" or feel like you have to "take on even more" to do this. You don't even have to follow boring curriculums or be good at maths. Not at all. In fact - unlearning, enjoying life in the forest, reading favourite books, going to museums and roaming free IS the curriculum in child-led home education. How to deal with resistance from other people and experts within the system. How to make it work financially and practically. Mind Love • Modern Mindfulness to Think, Feel, and Live Well
We will learn: How school suppresses a child's natural learning. Myths about literacy and teaching children young. Better ways to help a child learn literacy, numeracy and socialization. While I'm raising my own child, I'm also healing my own inner child. One thing I've realized is that so many of the things I'm learning about raising him… like communication, how to teach him, how he learns… are also relevant to how I deal with my own inner child. The way I speak to myself is so similar to how I should speak to him. Connecting through emotions before logic. Letting curiosity lead. Even if you're not planning on having children, there's a wealth of info on how to care for yourself. Healing your inner child is all about re-parenting yourself. So today we're going to be talking about how to foster skills that are actually helpful in the age we're living in - whether you're teaching these skills to your real child, or your inner child. Our guest today is Kerry McDonald, author of multiple books, including: Unschooled: Raising Curious, Well-Educated Children Outside the Conventional Classroom.
