In this episode, we're diving into the wildly popular teen comedy Superbad — one of the most iconic (and ridiculous) high school movies out there. As part of our series on school-related films, we're looking at what Superbad got right about the student experience, what it totally blew out of proportion, and why it still hits home for so many people. Superbad follows two inseparable best friends, Seth and Evan, as they navigate their final days of high school — chasing parties, popularity, and one last shot at leaving their mark before graduation. Beneath all the chaos and crude humor is a surprisingly real look at teenage friendship, insecurity, and the awkward (and often hilarious) leap into adulthood — a sneak peek at one of the hot takes from our episode! We unpack the awkwardness, social dynamics, and over-the-top moments — and ask what it all says about how pop culture portrays school life. It's part movie breakdown, part education lens, and all about what we can learn (and laugh at) when Hollywood takes on high school. What does it say about student relationships, social dynamics, and the overall high school experience? How do movies like this shape the way we think about education — and how students think about themselves? We're not taking it too seriously (it is Superbad, after all), but we are looking at what educators and school leaders can learn from how pop culture reflects — and distorts — the real student experience. Takeaways: Superbad, like many teen comedies, exaggerates for laughs, but it also influences how students, parents, and even educators view the high school experience. Behind the chaos and crude humor, Superbad highlights a very real truth: students crave meaningful friendships and validation during a time of major life transitions. While Superbad doesn't show much of the classroom environment, it reminds us how much of student life happens in between classes — in the social spaces. It's a good reminder that learning environments need to be designed for connection, mobility, and authenticity. Laughing at the awkwardness and absurdity of adolescence helps us connect to students' experiences. Movies like Superbad give us an opportunity to talk about real issues — like peer pressure, insecurity, and self-discovery — in a more approachable way. On this episode of March Forth with Mike Bauman, Mike chats with Steven Aripez! Aripez is an independent filmmaker from Temecula, California whose love for movies dates back to his childhood. He started taking film seriously at the age of 16, initially as a writer. Aripez wrote, produced, directed and edited his first feature film entitled The Director's Cut. Inspired in part by the style of movies like Clerks from Kevin Smith, The Director's Cut (2022) is a hangout murder mystery set in a video store. Additionally, Aripez has writer credits for The Morning Star, as well as writer and producer credits on Switchblade Holiday, and Rob, The Robber. He's also one of the brains behind The Temecula Valley Film Festival. An avid fan of horror and comedy, the next adventure for Aripez is his raunchy comedy film entitled Romancing with Herp. A nod to gutter cinema in the vein of films like Knocked Up, Superbad, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Aripez launched a Kickstarter for Romancing with Herp that's active through 6/5/25 to help bring independent, raunchy romcoms back to the mainstream. In this episode, Aripez talks with Mike about the genesis of Romancing with Herp, including the film's plot, getting Tober Williams, Nikki Howard, Nick Hibbitts, and Steve Bridges signed on to the movie, the Kickstarter perks for backers, his love for gutter cinema and raunchy comedies, his goal of getting a theatrical release for the movie, shooting the film locally in Temecula, and more. In this non linear episode we bring in guest JJ and SuperBad to discuss Carmen's fashion and his new irregular habit of watch wearing. Also dressing Donny like a pimp from Goodwill finds. Carmen wants to reduce the swearing on the show so he uses the code word squirrel to substitute for the bad one. The guys discuss movie remakes and old Sega video games like the Grinch. Toast talk happens and some discussion about lyrics of songs we didn't know.
Reach out to Cody and Buhler to tell them what's up!You can only blame yourself for the decisions you make.Former Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles went into great detail on record to ESPN's Heather Dinich on why he left Columbus for Penn State.John Buhler (Lead Writer, FanSided.com) and Cody Williams (Content Director, FanSided.com) were dumbfounded by the candid nature of that story.Sherrone Moore getting to handpick what two games he will be suspended for is just par for the course for the wacky, weird and wonderful ways of being a Michigan man. Also, why is UCF making that big of a comment to Scott Frost the second time around? This episode of False Start came a day after Cody exited his Jesus year and entered his David Ortiz year.Naturally, the guys had to celebrate with some JLN on the greatest coming-of-age story of their lifetimes. It pays to be Superbad when you live your life one False Start at a time!

On this episode we bring in Bean and Superbad to discuss many things including Carmen's mom. On a previous podcast the gang talked about Carmen's mother's uterus, describing it as the first place Carmen lived. Carmen decided to tell his mom about the pod and the boys including Donny seemed surprised. Carmen gets accused of fact checking which he denies and does not allow during the pod. Carmens daughter otherwise known as HR watched a previous pod and demanded that the video of the pod be taken down due to bad editing. Donny's computer has been in the shop so we have to cut him some slack and we don't want Don King Cady to cry even though he seems incapable. This pod cannot be described in this description because hundreds of topic keep popping out.

On episode 281 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Josh Parham to review Death of a Unicorn from A24, as well as talk about their favorite comedies of the 2020s as well as their favorite comedies of the last 25 years, the first quarter of the century. Before getting into their thoughts on the latest release, Ryan and Josh discuss the big trailer that dropped last week for Paul Thomas Anderson's film One Battle After Another, starting Leonardo DiCaprio. In the first glimpse of the biggest film of the director's career, there was plenty to love as well as be cautious about in anticipation of the film's release this coming September. After their brief thoughts on the trailer, they transition to Death of a Unicorn, which premiered earlier in the month at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival. Ryan, who reviewed the film at the festival, was mixed on it, and Josh joined him for a mixed reaction of a fascinating concept that never amounted to much in the final product. A disappointing comedy featuring a mostly wasted all-star cast. The conversation moves to talking about their favorite comedies of the 2020s so far, as the website and podcast will start to look at the best films of the decade so far. Films like Hundreds of Beavers, Bottoms, Anora, Benedetta, Barbie, Anora, and more. After discussing those films, they opened up the conversation to the best comedies of the last 25 years, as the team will also be taking a look at the best films of first quarter of the century. Films included in the conversation was Anchorman, A Serious Man, MacGruber, Bridesmaids, Spy, Mean Girls, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Walk Hard, Superbad, Hot Fuzz, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and plenty ore. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h39m. We will be back in next week for a Oscar retrospective over the 88th Academy Awards, covering the films of 2015. Till then, let's get into it. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

If you are familiar with THE ISLEY BROTHERS, then you have heard the music of CHRIS JASPER, who was primarily responsible for writing and producing all of THE ISLEY BROTHERS music during this time, including such beautiful love songs as “For The Love of You” and “Between the Sheets” and uptempo funk such as “Fight the Power.” His arrangements and instrumentation as a classically-trained musician, and his expertise on the keyboards and synthesizers, are the foundation of the legendary “Isley Brothers Sound.”Re-recorded elements of "That Lady" are incorporated in "i", the lead single of Kendrick Lamar's 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly. The song won the awards for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the 2015 Grammy Awards.Marvin and Ernie Isley joined CHRIS and formed ISLEY-JASPER-ISLEY. BUT they topped the charts with Chris singing lead vocals on “Caravan of Love” (1985) It was also used in commercials as part of a Dodge Caravan advertising campaign. He was also awarded a CEBA Award For Excellence for a Miller Brewing Company commercial. Andrew Buss has carved out a niche for himself as a pop culture expert, with a heavy emphasis on comedy. He has written for publications like Vanity Fair, New York Magazine's Vulture, The Daily Beast, Consequence of Sound, and The Laugh Button, where he served as editor for five years. As a journalist, Andrew has conducted interviews with some of the most prominent names in entertainment, including Mel Brooks, Seth Rogen, Nikki Glaser, Conan O'Brien, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Emma Stone, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Brendan Fraser, Jonah Hill, Bo Burnham, and countless others. In this interview, we talk about his writing and journalism journey, his new book I AM MCLOVIN, the legacy of SUPERBAD. When Superbad was released on August 17th in 2007, it proved itself to be a massive success right out of the gate, especially for those in the film's target millennial demographic. The film wound up dominating at the box office, bringing in $170 million dollars worldwide, against a $20 million dollar budget. It also launched the careers of Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Emma Stone, Bill Hader, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Seth Rogen whose careers are all thriving to this day. It further proved that Judd Apatow is now one of the most successful film producers of his generation, bringing the world hit after hit. Superbad remains, to this day, a beloved comedy film for millennials who grew up with it. This is because, unlike other comedies of that era, it embraced the awkwardness of the characters, particularly with someone like Michael Cera. Unlike the cartoonish representations of an 80s comedy like Revenge of the Nerds, Superbad presented itself with depth to the characters that enabled millennials (and other generations) to bond with the movie in a more meaningful way. Join us as we dive into the wildly humorous and absurd world of Superbad, the comedy that defined a generation. From unexpected car crashes and run-ins with zany cops to awkward teenage romance and the ultimate party quest, Superbad had it all. With iconic performances from Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, we explore the funny, the cringeworthy, and the unforgettable moments that made this film a cult classic.

Dana and Tom with special guest, author Andrew Buss (@andrewlbuss on Twitter, IG) discuss Superbad (2007) for Andrew's new book coming out on Tuesday, February 18th, 2025 - I Am McLovin: How Superbad Became the Biggest Comedy Hit of Its Generation (available with all major book purchasers): directed by Greg Mottola, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, music by Lyle Workman, starring Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Emma Stone, Bill Hader, and Seth Rogen.Plot Summary: So there's this flick called 'Superbad', right? Imagine two high school seniors, Seth and Evan. They're like best buds, and of course, they're total outcasts. Anyway, they're on this mission to have the most epic night ever before they head off to college. The ultimate goal? Get booze and get the girls of their dreams. But let me tell you, everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Picture a wild odyssey that involves a fake ID, cops who are a bit too eager to party, and one awkward encounter after another. It's hilarious, it's awkward, and it's got that coming-of-age vibe that makes it an absolute riot. Oh, and it's also got a bit of heart—because, you know, it's not just about the party. It's about friendship, growing up, and all that other mushy stuff. You can find the full live video from our interview/episode on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/superbad-2007-ft-andrew-buss-special-livestream-editionFor the entire rankings list so far, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/greatest-movie-of-all-time-listKeywords:Superbad, Andrew Buss, R-rated comedies, friendship, film analysis, comedy history, Judd Apatow, movie impact, generational comedy, cultural significance, Superbad, comedy, film analysis, cultural impact, behind the scenes, legacy, novelty, classicness, cinema, changing attitudes, law enforcement, rewatchability, R-rated comedies, film analysis, audience reception, cultural commentary, movie legacy, comedy evolution, Seth Rogen, Emma Stone, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bill Hader, Greg Mottola.Ronny Duncan Studios

Hello friends! "Home Free" writer/producer, Lenny Barszap and GRAMMY® Award-winning musician-producer Adrian Quesada (Black Pumas) who did the score and soundtrack for the movie are my guests for episode 1456! The "Home Free" soundtrack is out TODAY wherever you stream or download music. You can also get the double-vinyl HERE on Nine Mile Records and features members of The Beastie Boys, The Pharcyde, Dinosaur Jr., Luscious Jackson and more. "Home Free" is based on the real-life experience of Onion Creek Productions founder and director/producer Aaron Brown and writer/producer Lenny Barszap of Entertaining Entertainment. In 1997, as sophomores at the University of Texas at Austin, Brown and Barszap invited an unhoused philosophy professor to crash on their porch – where they hosted several parties, many of which their friend and fellow UT Austin student at the time, Adrian Quesada, also attended. Twenty-five years later, this became the premise for the film “Home Free,” which explores profound themes of friendship, personal growth, and social impact through the lens of comedy (think Dazed & Confused meets Superbad). Go to beenthere.org to find out more about the movie and soundtrack. Great conversation. Let's get down! Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod. Act 3: The Jew Who Saved Christmas Strap in, folks—Act 3 of The Jew Who Saved Christmas takes the chaos of Acts 1 and 2, sprinkles it with some Christmas magic, and cranks it up to “Holy latke, is this really happening?” With Santa still higher than your cousin at a Phish concert, Bernie finds herself fully in charge of the sleigh, a bag of presents, and the fate of Christmas itself. No pressure, right? From a showdown at TSA (where Bernie proves that saving Christmas sometimes means dodging tasers) to a rooftop brawl with reindeer in full meltdown mode, Bernie's journey is a mix of slapstick comedy and heartfelt moments. There's a rogue gingerbread elf screaming on the sleigh radio, Santa pulling Die Hard-level stunts, and Bernie dropping life advice on orphans like she's a jaded holiday therapist. Did we mention she's doing this all while rocking a pair of Uggs and the lingering regret of having roofied the big guy in red? But it's not all chaos (okay, it's mostly chaos). Bernie starts to realize that maybe—just maybe—this whole fiasco is more than a holiday disaster. Maybe it's her chance to prove she's not the screw-up everyone thinks she is. Or maybe it's just a chance to survive one more sleigh ride without hurling. Either way, it's pure comedic gold. The Cast Still Slaying It: Jeff Bergman, Selyna Warren, Jim O'Heir, Marissa Read, John Milhiser, Kiel Kennedy, Tiffany Black, Carla Delaney, Ashley Bell, and David Jacks continue to bring their A-game, balancing over-the-top laughs with just the right amount of holiday heart. ✨Act 3 of The Jew Who Saved Christmas is what happens when Elf meets Superbad at a menorah-lighting party. It's absurd, hilarious, a little sweet, and the perfect ending to a holiday tale that's anything but traditional. Whether you're here for the laughs, the feels, or just to see how Bernie gets out of this mess, you won't be disappointed.
Nick teams up with film critics Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy to review the big holiday movie releases, including the chilling vampire remake Nosferatu, Nicole Kidman in Babygirl, the true-life boxing drama The Fire Inside, and Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. Then, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to dive into pop culture moments that have not aged well at all. They discuss Jimmy Fallon's infamous blackface sketch, Jonah Hill's troubling date-rape joke in Superbad, Courteney Cox's portrayal of "Fat Monica" on Friends, and the problematic behavior of Hugh Grant's character in Love Actually. To wrap things up, they finish their snack tour of Belgium and ponder what ever happened to Pacey from Dawson's Creek. [Ep308]
