On this day, 3 March 1921, a workers' uprising began in Labin, Croatia, by a multinational group of around 2,000 miners. The miners were a mixture of Croatians, Hungarians, Slovaks, Poles, Czechs, Italians, Germans and Slovenians. On March 1, Italian fascists attacked and badly beat Giovanni Pipano, a miners' union leader. When his colleagues found out they were furious, and called a meeting for March 3. They decided to occupy their mine, declaring: “Kova je naša” ("the mine is ours"). Peasants came to support them, and the rebels organised armed detachments of Red Guards to maintain order. On March 7, the workers declared a Republic, raised a red hammer and sickle flag, and made decisions through mass assemblies, with every nationality represented. They drew up a list of demands to present to their employer, Societa Arsia, including a demand of a pay increase. When bosses refused, on March 21 the workers restarted production under their own control. On April 8, around 1000 troops and police officers attacked the mine, and while the miners put up a spirited defence, with their lack of arms and training they were eventually forced to surrender. Two miners, Massimiliano Ortar and Adalbert Sykora, were killed and dozens arrested. 52 workers were later put on trial for charges including establishment of a soviet regime, possession of explosives and more. But because the miners refused to testify against one another, and because of their support from the local population, none were convicted.This uprising is commemorated by our March T-Shirt of the Month, made under workers' control by a cooperative, supporting grassroots unions in South Asia. On this day, 1 March 1944, a series of coordinated general strikes took place across Nazi-occupied northern Italy. One estimate put the number of strikers at 1.2 million while an article in the New York Times claimed between three and six million.The strikes were superficially about economic issues with demands like a freeze on food prices, increases in wages and rations, and the payment of bonuses. But the strikes were also aimed at undermining the fascist state and was organised by participants in the anti-fascist resistance.Major factories in northern Italy, particularly in Milan and Turin, were shut down. There was also significant sabotage of rail and electricity infrastructure by partisan units to coincide with the walkouts while the country's main newspaper, Corriere della Sera, was unable to publish for three days due to the printers' strike.The repression of the strike was extremely harsh with many workers even being deported to concentration camps in Germany. Send a textThe streets of Berlin were devastated beyond recognition in some areas as 33-year-old photographer William Vandivert was led to the location of the former German chancellery buildings. Just days before, these streets had been the subject of a two-week long bloody and bitter battle between the Soviet Union's Red Army and the last of the German Wehrmacht whose numbers had been propped up by old men and young boys recruited from the city's population. Now that battle was over and red flags upon which was emblazoned the hammer and sickle emblem of the Soviet Union hung from the ruined buildings, replacing the swastika of the Third Reich which was no more. Vandivert later reported in Life magazine that almost every famous building in the German capital was a shambles and one could walk for blocks and see no living thing, hear nothing but the stillness of death and smell nothing but its putrid stench. Vandivert arrived at what remained of the Reich chancellery and was then guided to an entrance that went down beneath it. Vandivert was about to become the first journalist from a western Allied nation to see the fuhrerbunker where Adolf Hitler directed the German war effort in those final days before he like the Nazi dream itself ended in blood; in the Fuhrer's case at his own hand in one last act of defiance. As if symbolising the dark nature of the world he was stepping into, Vandivert later recounted that there was almost no light in the bunker and that the Red Army guards who escorted him around lit the way with candles before the flash of his camera exposed the scenes below; his pictures giving the people of the US and beyond their first glimpse into where the Fuhrer – perhaps the epitome of evil – died. Since that day, the world has been fascinated with the story of Hitler's final days. Prior to 1945, it appeared as though Hitler and his Fascist war machine was unstoppable as it dominated the battlefield. Even his enemies began to view him some kind of invincible monarch and so it was quite perplexing that the man who had enamoured audiences of thousands at the spectacular Nuremberg rallies would die in a dark hole in the ground like a rat returning to its nest after consuming poison. This is the story of the creation of the Fuhrerbunker and those hellish last days of the man who dreamed of total conquest.Support the show

It was a simple honeymoon photo from 1941. A stranger posted it online and the commentary was vicious. The woman in that picture was Albanian author Lea Ypi's grandmother. In the midst of the Second World War and the violent end times of Mussolini's government, Ypi's grandmother must have been a fascist, a collaborator, a traitor to Albania. In her book, Indignity: A Life Reimagined, Ypi attempts to find the truth of her grandmother's life, in a journey that mixes philosophy, fantasy, history, and family narrative.

Fascism and antisemitism were by no means limited to Hitler and his closest allies in Tokyo and Rome. Indeed, far-right extremist ideologies had taken hold in several European countries that made them potential allies for Berlin particularly with the natural hostility such policies attracted from the communist superpower of the Soviet Union.One such nation that found itself seduced by the same Fascist ideals as Germany was Romania. Surrounded by potential enemies who viewed its lands with jealousy including the Soviet Union, historic antisemitism combined with a fear of a communism led Romania down a dark path as it found itself working alongside Hitler's Germany on what the leaders of both countries saw as nothing short of a holy crusade against those who they believed conspired against them, stifling them and holding them back from achieving their true destiny of greatness in the world.But working with the devil comes at a terrible price. In this episode we are going to examine the involvement of Romanian soldiers in one of the most brutal chapters of the Holocaust where hatred manifested itself in its purest forms against those who had no way of fighting back. One researcher read 60,000 tweets just to find a single biographical detail to out a Nazi hiding in the dark.  As we'll cover in future episodes, antifa's strategies can also apply to outing Jeffrey Epstein's co-conspirators who think they can continue hiding from justice. Just as the NAACP's Walter White investigated lynchings in the 1920s when the police protected their friends in the Klan, citizen researchers can map the flight logs and financial ties of Trump and Epstein's friends. If the FBI and DOJ continue to protect billionaire lawlessness, we must create a social cost for corruption and predatory elites. If the Department of Justice won't unmask the villains, then it's up to us to do it. "We protect us" is the rallying cry of liberation movements, of neighbors helping neighbors against corruption and institutional failure that protects predators in power. As Trump surges his Gestapo and threatens to annex new territory, his brain is collapsing. He's sundowning on Truth Social, nodding off in meetings, slurring words, slurping at the saliva pooling in his mouth. The world's leading philosophers and psychologists were based in Germany and Austria during the rise of Hitler. They studied the darkest chapter of human history while trying to make sense of it and survive it themselves. Their teachings are an urgent alarm for us today: fascists seek endless conflict through domination, and it will never be enough. Drawing on George Orwell's analysis of Hitler, we see that while democracy offers the radical concept of "having a good time," fascism preys on a neurotic, broken need for "struggle, danger, and death." It is an addiction to conflict, often first learned in the childhood home, according to Erich Fromm, that views empathy not as a virtue, but as a target.  Walter Benjamin, before losing his own life to suicide to avoid the concentration camps, pointed out that fascists seek pleasure in their own demise. It is the fleeting, hollow glee of a bully kicking over a sandcastle because he doesn't know how to build one. Joy is how we win. The hate-fueled fascist high is a non-renewable resource. It requires a constant supply of new enemies to sustain a house of cards built on lawlessness and corruption. True joy, born of community, love, and creation, is sustainable energy, even in the unlikeliest of places, as our heroes who came before us also showed us. Stay safe. Stay defiant.
