It's the holidays, which means entertaining and cooking, so who better to chat with than one of our favorite people who knows a bit about both: Ruthie Rogers, the owner of one of the world's great restaurants, the River Cafe in London. Then, as the new Bob Dylan biopic, starring Timothée Chalamet, comes to theaters this month, Ash Carter has the story of the studio that revolutionized graphic design and left a lasting visual mark on the culture, thanks in part to that now legendary illustration of Dylan with his hair rendered as psychedelic curls. And finally, Andrew Ryvkin reports on why countries around the world, from Georgia to South Korea, are playing Fascist whack-a-mole.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Rick Perlstein, historian, writer at The American Prospect, and author of his most recent book Reaganland: America's Right Turn 1976-1980. But first, they run through updates on Joe Biden's pardoning of Hunter, Trump's developing cabinet, Israel's ethnic cleansing of Gaza and developing annexation, Pete Hegseth's history of abuse, US arms to Ukraine, German VW workers strike, and the DNC chair race, before watching Kash Patel preview what he'll bring to the Trump administration live with Steve Bannon. Rick Perlstein then joins, as he, Sam, and Emma dive right into making sense of the social welfare promises made by vitriolic far-right populist regimes, be it Bismark's invention of unemployment, a KKK that supports single-payer healthcare, or an RFK healthcare regime that could reign in Big Pharma, assessing the actual value of these promises and the limited impact they have as fascist carrots, and emphasizing why these administrations focus on destroying institutions and systems, not building them. After expanding on the particular threat of an RFK-led world of public “health”, Perlstein dives into the unfortunate necessity of relying on experts for a well-functioning democracy, before turning fully toward the future of a new Trump Administration, unpacking why the failure of their fear-mongering policies – particularly when it comes to their insane deportation scheme – won't undermine the administration or its support, and why we need to rebuild our society's trust in the government's ability to help. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Trump's administration of “deep-state disruptors,” unpack Biden's pardoning of Hunter, and parse through a former Israeli Defense Minister's statements on Israel's “ethnic cleansing” of Gaza. They also talk with Clover from Central Valley about moving away from fascism and with Tammy from Illinois about academic paths under fascism, also watching Michael Knowles take a dip back into his acting career. Ali from Wisconsin asks about the potential of denaturalization under a new Trump administration, plus, your calls and IMs! This week, Dr. Ben Chicka returns to the Pod Beyond Pod to help me do a deep dive on Paul Tillich's fraught life in 1930's Germany, his life as a public intellectual in the United States, and how we can use his philosophy to navigate sociopolitical complexities in our own time.
In what ways, in our attempts at liberation, do we merely migrate the same logics that produce oppression and keep replicating the same realities? How coloniality, white supremacy, and even patriarchy are also (destructive) attempts at liberation and care? And what does all of that have to do with how we show up relationally in our personal and interpersonal relationships? for his magnificent rhizomatic wisdom. You're Listening to Parallax Views https://parallaxviews.podbean.com/ Support the Show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/parallaxviews On this edition of Parallax Views (recorded 11-11-24), self-described conservative Marxist Ralph Leonard joins the show to discuss the 2024 U.S. Presidential election and his article "Old-school Leftism is going extinct in the Democratic Party" about the passing of the Bernie Sanders moment and why he believes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Squad won't generate the same energy as Sanders' did in 2016 or 2020. Much of the conversation will focus in on how President-elect Donald Trump managed to obtain the votes of a multiracial coalition that included black and latino men as well as white men and women. We'll delve into the nationalism underpinning Trump's coalition and how it is not explicitly ethno-nationalism but rather civic nationalist in a way that made a multiracial coalition possible for MAGA. We'll discuss the discourse Trump crafted around the border and Trump's anti-immigrant rhetoric. Leonard also notes how horrible he finds Trump's deportation rhetoric but delves into why many voters opted for it. We'll also discuss the 2024 as the first "post-woke" election for the Democratic Party. That is to say that Kamala Harris did not run on a "woke" platform and actually ran away from it. We'll also discuss foreign policy, Israel/Palestine, Trump as a carny barker, the "Is Trump a Fascist?" debate, JD Vance, and more. Additionally, we will delve into Ralph's views on Marx and Marxism, what people don't understand about Marxism, Marxism as an emancipatory project, and how both the Democratic and Republican Parties in the U.S. are creatures of the ruling class (or capital) rather than the working classes. All that and much more.
It's nearly Christmas time and what better way to celebrate than working out how far along to fascism America is? Or the new parliamentary bill to legalise assisted dying? Or the fact that most of the right wing Reform lot don't know the actual history of their country? Luckily we've got all this and more!!
We are joined by Dr. Gerald Horne for a discussion on the meaning of the American Revolution and his extensive scholarship on re-assessing 1776 as a "counterrevoluton." At the heart of this discussion is the political and practical question for socialist politics in our time, namely: what is salvageable from 1776, and what is not? How do we read history from a materialist point of view? Dr. Horne's scholarship traces the social forces that brought about the rebellion of 1776 back farther than most historians of the American Revolution have done, by showing how the international forces went to shape the early settlers in relationship to the threat of slave rebellions and resistance. Horne's work also sheds light on a far more extensive network of resistance and rebellion amongst enslaved Africans that has largely gone ignored by historians and he reveals how central the slavery question was to the wider movements of 1776. Chapters Opening and Intro to Dr. Horne Is the American revolution a purely bourgeois revolution? Can we salvage the optimism of 1776? Is there a revolutionary tradition in America? Understanding slave rebellions and resistance pre-1776 How can history help the "class vs. race" debate that often divides the left? How is "counterrevolution" related to Trump? Is Trump Bonapartist or Fascist? How can socialists contest the two capitalist parties in America? Closing and future of Dr. Horne's scholarship and work Please join our Patreon to support us and get early access to all of our interviews, seminars and videos (https://www.patreon.com/c/torsiongroups). Dr. Gerald Horne holds the Moores Professorship of History and African American Studies. His research has addressed issues of racism in a variety of relations involving labor, politics, civil rights, international relations and war. He has also written extensively about the film industry. Dr. Horne is the author of more than thirty books and one hundred scholarly articles and reviews. His current research includes two forthcoming books: The Counter-Revolution of 1836: Texas Slavery, Jim Crow and the Roots of U.S. Fascism and Revolting Capital: Racism and Radicalism in Washington, D.C., 1918-1968. His other projects include a study of U.S. imperialism in Northeast Africa, principally Egypt and Ethiopia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and a similar study concerning U.S. imperialism in Southeast Asia during the same period. He won the American Book Award for The Dawning of the Apocalypse: The Roots of Slavery, White Supremacy, Settler Colonialism, and Capitalism in the Long Sixteenth Century in 2021.

We close out our November the only way we know how: with a bad movie. A bad Final Fantasy movie no less, in Spirits Within. With Mussolini's Nation-Empire: Sovereignty and Settlement in Italy's Borderlands, 1922–1943 (Cambridge UP, 2017), Roberta Pergher transforms our understanding of Fascist rule. Examining Fascist Italy's efforts to control the antipodes of its realm - the regions annexed in northern Italy after the First World War, and Italy's North African colonies - she shows how the regime struggled to imagine and implement Italian sovereignty over alien territories and peoples. Contrary to the claims of existing scholarship, Fascist settlement policy in these regions was not designed to solve an overpopulation problem, but to bolster Italian claims to rule in an era that prized self-determination and no longer saw imperial claims as self-evident. Professor Pergher explores the character and impact of Fascist settlement policy and the degree to which ordinary Italians participated in and challenged the regime's efforts to Italianize contested territory. Employing models and concepts from the historiography of empire, she shows how Fascist Italy rethought the boundaries between national and imperial rule. Learn more about your ad choices. Fascists such as Richard Spencer interpret science fiction films and literature as saying only white men have the imagination required to invent a high-tech future. Other white nationalists envision racist utopias filled with Aryan supermen and all-white space colonies. Speculative Whiteness: Science Fiction and the Alt-Right (University of Minnesota Press, 2024) traces these ideas through the entangled histories of science fiction culture and white supremacist politics, showing that debates about representation in science fiction films and literature are struggles over who has the right to imagine and inhabit the future. We discuss examples of the infamous "Trotskyist to Neoconservative pipeline," such as Lyndon LaRouche, James Burnham, and Irving Kristol. We speculate about the intellectual, psychological, and social factors behind these political shifts and their relation to the culture of the left. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Austrian-British economist Friedrich Hayek's The Road to Serfdom (1944) in which Hayek (1899-1992) warned that the way Britain was running its wartime economy would not work in peacetime and could lead to tyranny. His target was centralised planning, arguing this disempowered individuals and wasted their knowledge, while empowering those ill-suited to run an economy. He was concerned about the support for the perceived success of Soviet centralisation, when he saw this and Fascist systems as two sides of the same coin. When Reader's Digest selectively condensed Hayek's book in 1945, and presented it not so much as a warning against tyranny as a proof against socialism, it became phenomenally influential around the world. "I live life in the margins of society. And the rules of normal society don't apply in the margins." Welcome to the saucy, scandalous slag-paradise that is Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980)! Tamara was a Polish-born aristocrat, bisexual painter, and Art Deco diva who took Paris by storm in the 1920s after escaping the Russian Revolution. She was known for her hunger, a deep yearning to become a great artist and gobble up anything and everyone who stood in her path. (Including her husband! Move out the way, b*tch.) As a sapphic siren of the Jazz Age, she was also part of Paris' lesbian underground, which featured clubs and bars that catered to butch and femme tastes alike. That is, before the populist Fascists came in and ruined everything (sound familiar, America?). A self-made woman who subjugated everything to her art, Tamara cared as much about poontang and diamonds as she did her reputation. She was a PR genius, but despite that, we barely talk about her today. Join me and Stephen Brower – comedian, writer, and recent cast member of LEMPICKA on Broadway – to discuss the dazzling life of this Art Deco dynamo. Today we explore an aspect of far right thought that connects libertarian and fascist thought and action. As we face the prospect of a rising far right across the western world (and beyond, though that is beyond the scope for this podcast), it becomes ever more important to understand the ideological underpinnings of contemporary fascist thought. The second Trump Administration might dramatically reshape the foundations of the federal government for decades to come. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party is reckoning with what could be interpreted as a generational rebuke of its platform and presentation. But is this the beginning of a mass political realignment in the United States? And how will politicians communicate their platforms in a world where the “attention economy” has so radically shifted? Author, political commentator, and MSNBC host Chris Hayes joins guest host Andrew Marantz for an election postmortem and to discuss where the Democrats go from here. This week's reading: “Donald Trump, Reprised” “The Tucker Carlson Road Show,” by Andrew Marantz “Does Hungary Offer a Glimpse of Our Authoritarian Future?,” by Andrew Marantz “Why We Can't Stop Arguing About Whether Trump Is a Fascist,” by Andrew Marantz “Why Was It So Hard for the Democrats to Replace Biden,” by Andrew Marantz Tune in to The Political Scene wherever you get your podcasts.

Friends, it's a hard week. We lost, badly, and we learned more than we wanted to know about our neighbors. History gives us a lesson or two on what befalls those who govern with hate and abuses of power, and the resilience of the people who suffer under them. They are lessons Trump would do well to remember, if only he was capable of learning them.
It made news when the retired general John Kelly, Donald Trump's longest-serving chief of staff, said that the former President fit the definition of a fascist. The MSNBC host Rachel Maddow could hardly be blamed if she said, I told you so. Maddow's podcast “Ultra” and her book “Prequel” detail the history of Nazi and far-right movements in America in the twentieth century—and the people who fought them. “When we talk about making America great again and we talk about the threat of an authoritarian takeover in the United States in the form of Trumpism, it is not something foreign,” Maddow explained to David Remnick last week at The New Yorker Festival. “It is something that's coming from a fascist place that is a recurring, ebbing, and flowing tide that we've faced in multiple generations.”
On Thursday's Mark Levin Show, the Democrats told us there's no such thing as a woman, so how can there be a gap when it comes to women voting for Kamala Harris? Could it be because she is destroying women's sports? Maybe because Mark Cuban is now attacking any woman who surrounds Donald Trump as stupid. Cuban hates Donald Trump more than he loves the country. Harris doesn't stand for women's rights. There's never been a campaign like this. The Democrats call you Fascists, Nazis, garbage, and now stupid. Also, J.D. Vance calls in from the campaign trail. Kamala Harris is a pathological liar and can't run on her own record. He explains that Harris broke it, but Donald Trump will fix it with common sense in government. We need to swamp the vote! Later, when Jewish kids were running for their lives, locked in dorm rooms at colleges and universities last year Sen Chuck Schumer's response to school deans was to keep their heads down, it's only Republicans complaining. For those Jewish friends who don't know who they are voting for, this shouldn't even be a close call. Afterward, Sen Rick Scott calls in with a campaign update. Scott wonders why the Democrats won't just own what they believe in. They want high taxes, big government, and the Green New Deal. They always change during campaign season. Finally, Rep Mike Lawler calls in to discuss his re-election campaign, the challenges of running in a predominantly Democratic district, and his dedication to public safety and supporting Israel. This district is going to determine the outcome on Tuesday. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
