It's the first installment of The Fear of God: Ghoul Scouts Edition! This week, Reed and Nathan are lost in the shadows as Vera Goudie and Jess Fischli take over the show with a discussion of the infamous thriller from Karyn Kusama and writer Diablo Cody: JENNIFER'S BODY.Starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer's Body tells a subversive and darkly comic tale of codependency, possession, and good, old-fashioned revenge. The film, originally pitched to audiences as a kind of feminine slasher, is a far more interesting and layered piece than its first audiences recognized. Also featuring a Patron-only "Whatcha" segment, this is a lively and thoughtful discussion that we really hope you enjoy!Patron Only Segment: Whatcha Watchin' / Readin' / Listenin' To?3:23 - JENNIFER'S BODYSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Easily one of the most unconventional films of last year was the French throwback to folk horror tales of the 1970s: THE VOURDALAK. Set in the 18th century, it follows a Marquis who becomes displaced after being robbed and finds his way to the shelter of a strange family. To say too much more would be to rob this unique, surprising, and disarmingly potent film of its fun -- and its terror. It features a vintage aesthetic, outstanding performances, and a monster that will absolutely not be what you're expecting. It also features some profound observations about the insidious nature of power pursuits, the creeping dread of control that pretends to be love, and the necessity of remembering our capacity to change. It's also a fun, gory chiller perfect for a dark and stormy night. We're joined by author and friend of the show Sarah Welch-Larson for a lively and thoughtful conversation that we really hope you enjoy.Patron Only Segment: Whatcha Watchin' / Readin' / Listenin' To8:30 - THE VOURDALAKSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Welcome to 2025 everyone! We are kicking things off with a couple of big announcements, a few special guests, and an over-sized episode about one of the most fascinating horror films of the last few years: Coralie Fargeat's THE SUBSTANCE. Starring Demi Moore in possibly a career-best performance, The Substance is about an aging fitness starlet who takes an experimental drug to create a younger, "better" version of herself. Things do not go according to plan.At its heart, The Substance is a bold, exceptionally crafted exploration of cultural stigma around aging and appearance. But along the way, it has some profound observations to make about our relationships with ourselves and the ways our perceptions of our bodies can lead us down dark and destructive paths. We're joined by friends of the show Vera Goudie, Jess Fischli, and Jocee Worley for a vulnerable, thoughtful, and occasionally hilarious discussion about the multitude of fascinating things this film has on its mind. Also featuring a Patron-only "Whatcha" segment, this is a hearty and heartfelt conversation that we really hope you'll enjoy.5:24 - A Few Brief AnnouncementsPatron Only Segment: Whatcha Watchin' / Readin' / Listenin' To?12:41 - THE SUBSTANCEFind Reed and Tyler's book Valley of the Shadow: The Spiritual Value of Horror here. We kick off a brand new mini-series this week all about the most infamous bloodsucker in all of culture. Earlier this year, we drilled down on some recent films which were inspired by Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein. Coincidentally, the same thing has been happening with Bram Stoker's original classic vampire tale, inspiring a handful of films in the last year or two based upon different aspects of the Dracula story. So we start this series with a direct adaptation, one which forever influenced the way vampires were depicted in pop culture entirely. 1992's BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, is a lush and excessive production full of gothic grandeur and theatricality. It features incredible performances from Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins and a script which drills in on the concept of lost love, abandonment of faith, and the nature of appetite and longing. We're joined this week by fellow film critic and host of the "1 of my Stories" podcast, Lindsey Dunn, to discuss the film's rich tapestry of religious symbolism, desperate romance, and -- of course -- bloodsucking vampires. Also featuring a Patron-only segment where we catch up on our "Whatchas", this is a fun and hearty episode that we really hope you enjoy.6:24 - Getting to Know Lindsey DunnPatron Only Segment: Whatcha Watchin' / Readin' / Listenin' To?15:52 - BRAM STOKER'S DRACULASee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards. First ,Dom welcomes in Monique Hofkin, a member of the Central Bucks School District, on to discuss a complaint she filed for multiple anonymous parents with the U.S. Department of Education over a Spanish teacher for Central Bucks West who head's their Muslim Student Association. Hofkin tells us what concerned the parents, offering glimpses onto the teacher's social media postings which call, among other things, the death of Jews.  Then, Dom continues by welcoming Guy Ciarrocchi back on to discuss a piece he penned for Broad and Liberty concerning the teacher's union stranglehold on the debate over school choice. Giordano notes the thirst from voters on both sides of the aisle for the allowance to choose where to school their children, with Ciarrocchi explaining why Democratic politicians, even ones who campaign on school choice such as Josh Shapiro, never follow through on their promises.

We continue our series called #Franklymydear on films inspired by Mary Shelley's classic novel Frankenstein with our penultimate installment. This week we're examining an independent production filmed right in one of our guest's backyard. THE ANGRY BLACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER delivers a smart and disarmingly thoughtful approach to the Frankenstein scenario, repositioning the narrative in the modern, rural south and tackling some pretty heavy themes. It follows Vicaria, a brilliant young student who theorizes that death is merely a disease awaiting a cure. When she resurrects her brother following his untimely death, she unknowingly releases a horror upon the community, although it is not immediately the horror you might imagine. The film is a compelling portrait of the power of identity in the face of systemic obstacles and systemic abuses that -- despite its heavy subject -- leaves a remarkably hopeful statement with us.We're joined by new FoGger Chris Clark and Quarterly Queen Jess Fischli to discuss this impressive film as well as for a Patron-only segment of "Whatcha"s. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards. This week, Dom welcomes Stephanie, a parent in the North Penn School District, who led a protest last week after a horrific incident played out in her child's school Pennbrook Middle School, back onto the podcast to offer updates on the story after last night's meeting on safety in the school district. Dom first reminds listeners of the story, telling of a terribly violent attack with a Stanley steel mug on a 12-year-old by a 13-year-old who has had a violent past. It came out with the incident that faculty were warned of an impending attack, with allegations that the warnings were ignored due to the gender identity of the assailant. After hanging up with Stephanie, Dom takes a call from Vince Altieri, another father in the North Penn school district, who penned an article for North Penn Now about the horrific attack in the district. Vince explains why he's called for changes to administration, noting a continued trend of politics prioritized over other issues in the district, here being the safety of students.

First, Dom welcomes in Stephanie, a parent of a 7th grader at Pennbrook Middle School, onto the podcast to discuss why she and other parents were out protesting the North Penn School District for answers concerning a brutal lunchroom attack on a 12-year-old. Stephanie takes us inside the situation, telling of the horrific incident that he daughter now has nightmares about featuring a 13-year old student bloodying another with a Stanley steel mug in an attack that could've potentially been prevented had school leadership heeded the warnings of students. Next, Dom welcomes Washington Examiner reporter Chris Tremoglie back on for some updates on the shocking controversy. Tremoglie tells of a new injunction released by the judge that demands media not reveal details about the assailant, an odd move as the standard for reporting minors is to not reveal any personal or identifying information. Finally, Dom welcomes Camden County Commissioner Jeffrey L. Nash onto the podcast to discuss why he chose to speak out when he heard of a Voorhees School District-supported pro-Palestine protest that he considers anti-Semitic. Giordano, while he agrees, takes the stance of devil's advocate in asking Nash to justify why this is not solely an expression of the First Amendment. Nash tells of the hateful rhetoric in these anti-Israel protests, noting the way Jewish students feel when seeing other students express such a stance.
