Sam Kahn is a writer and film producer by day with a passion for chess, and particularly, the lessons we can learn from chess history. Sam is especially fascinated by the distinct chess styles that one can see by playing through the games of prior greats like Lasker, Pillsbury and Capablanca. He writes about the lessons we can learn from these players in his excellent new collaboration with IM Cyrus Lakdawala, A Century of Chess Book 1: 1900-1909. Of course, before Sam became consumed by chess history, he obsessively focused on his own game. Sam has his share of stories from all-nighters at NYC chess dens, and reflects on how he achieved the 2100 USCF level, and why he thinks it will be challenging to reach a highe level. Based on his own experiences, Sam also shares tips for navigating the narrow path from “degenerate” chess obsessive to healthy chess hobbyist. As an avid reader of Sam's blogs (both chess and non-chess), I was excited to hear him reflect on his own chess story. Timestamps of topics discussed are below.
We’re continuing with the bonus episodes recorded Live at Weapons of Mass Creation. In this episode, I talk with designer Joe Baron of Branded Baron about Ink Wars, the importance of having a good lawyer, and we do bad impressions of Muppets and Thundercats.
This past weekend I was in Cleveland for Weapons of Mass Creation, and I had the opportunity to record the podcast live from Vendor Village. I recorded a series of short 15 minute interviews while I was there and at the Dribbble meetup afterward, with some incredibly talented people. So, for the next several weeks we’ll be posting those interviews on Thursdays as bonus episodes. And speaking of WMC fest, my guest this week – Carlos Basabe, was the Emcee of Ink Wars at Weapons of Mass Creation. Carlos is a talented illustrator and designer, who runs his own company, Four Six Six studios, based in Washington DC. We talk about his early life in Havana, Cuba, growing up in Florida, his path to becoming an illustrator and designer and much more.
In this mini interview, the Masters are joined by the creator of Ink Wars, Mat Helme. Mat relays the origins of the design sport and shares some stories from the battle field.
This mini interview episode takes placed on the conference floor of Creative South. The Masters talk with this year's winner of Ink Wars, artist Dylan Menges.
