I'm not going to give a beat by beat, but I want to start by sharing how I got involved with Scare Up The Vote. I am driving in highway traffic when I get a text from Becky Spratford. It just says: “Can you talk. It's big. Call when you can.”I never thought of myself as an awfulizer, but a vague text like that gets me nervous. So I immediately called back Becky and when she answered I asked the obvious question “Big good, or big bad?”I'd seen Tananarive tweeting about how there should be a horror community stream for Harris/Walz, and in my mind I agreed. Horror is a great community, and can really come together for a cause, because horror people care. A few days after Becky's text I was sitting in the parking lot of a book store, on a phone call with Tananarive Due talking about how to put on a live stream. There were some vague ideas and a lot of positive energy. I told her I would love to be involved in tech in whatever capacity, and when we hung up I got started researching. From there, I was the tech team for this stream. Tananarive had pulled together a committee to run the event, including Linda Addison, Christopher Golden, Maxwell Ian Gold, and Cynthia Pelayo. And we had two weeks to go live time. That two weeks is a blur of Zoom calls, emails, advice from respected peers, nerves, successes, and a very minor amount of failures. It was all momentum and enthusiasm, and practice practice practice. The guest list blossomed from a dozen or so awesome names to over twenty. The tech team responded in kind. I brought on someone who brought on several other someones. Tananarive brought in several amazing folks who had experience with cons and streams and who are brilliantly talented.Everyone contributed their skills, experience and knowledge to make this stream something I was terrified to say for fear of jinxing everything (until we finally ended the stream): a huge fucking success!Folks, if that stream looked nearly flawless, and felt like we really knew what we were doing, it's because it was and we did. This team that got pulled together in the small window of time that we had executed essentially perfectly. Some of them didn't get added to the team until the day of the stream! The guest speakers similarly crushed it. Spooky writers telling scary stories, entertaining, informing, inspiring. Folks of all variety of backgrounds and experiences, coming together because sometimes the scariest story is real life. But as Rachel Harrison said, we will be battered, bloody, crawling through the dirt wielding whatever weapon we can find - and the weapon we have now is our vote. I think another weapon we have is each other. And the more we talk about it, and come together, and make noise, the more power we will see that we truly have. The “me” of this election cycle is starting to feel a lot like “us”, which gives me hope. But back to the stream. Stream day was me sitting at a desk for 13 hours, consistently communicating with the team, guest speakers, etc. Skipping lunch, drinking way too much coffee, and generally feeling anxious. Fearing the worst. But the worst never came, and fifteen minutes before the scheduled launch, I started pre-roll. Nearly three hours later, twenty six (I think) passionate folks had spoken their mind, and aside from a muted mic in the beginning and shifting two guest spots, more than 1,300 people had watched, and our little operation raised over $21,000.Thanks are due to all of the committee and volunteers. Everyone worked hard, and it wouldn't be the production it was without everyone's effort. I'm especially grateful for my friend Greg Greene, who I asked to hop on a call for some advice running a stream. Not only did he join the team, his organizational and planning skills were crucial to the flow of the event. He also brought on Jason Ragosta to do a lot of the art, and Amber Reu to run the green room. There are countless beautiful moments in the stream. One of my personal favorites, as a massive fan of the TV show Hannibal, was Bryan Fuller's rebuke of Trump on the topic of Hannibal Lecter. Chef's kiss, Bryan. This is a public episode. They dive into a review of Hellboy: The Crooked Man, the latest reboot of the Hellboy film series based on the Dark Horse Comics character created by Mike Mignola. Directed by Brian Taylor and co-written by Mignola and Christopher Golden, the film adapts The Crooked Man limited series. Starring Jack Kesy as Hellboy, the story follows Hellboy and rookie Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) agent Bobbie Jo Song, who find themselves stranded in rural Appalachia after a train crash while transporting a shapeshifting spider. Desperate, she calls in a professional fixer to clean up the mess, but things get complicated when another fixer, sent by the hotel's mysterious owner, intervenes. The two men are forced to work together to protect both the hotel's reputation and Margaret's career. Finally, Lafayette and Carlos wrap up with a discussion on the Netflix documentary about the Menendez Brothers, delving into the infamous case and its lasting impact. The next high concept horror novel from New York Times bestselling author Christopher Golden.Across Italy there are many half-empty towns, nearly abandoned by those who migrate to the coast or to cities. The beautiful, crumbling hilltop town of Becchina is among them, but its mayor has taken drastic measures to rebuild—selling abandoned homes to anyone in the world for a single Euro, as long as the buyer promises to live there for at least five years. It's a no-brainer for American couple Tommy and Kate Puglisi. Both work remotely, and Becchina is the home of Tommy's grandparents, his closest living relatives. It feels like a romantic adventure, an opportunity the young couple would be crazy not to seize. But from the moment they move in, they both feel a shadow has fallen on them. Tommy's grandmother is furious, even a little frightened, when she realizes which house they've bought. There are rooms in an annex at the back of the house that they didn't know were there. The place makes strange noises at night, locked doors are suddenly open, and when they go to a family gathering, they're certain people are whispering about them, and about their house, which one neighbor refers to as The House of Last Resort. Soon, they learn that the home was owned for generations by the Church, but the real secret, and the true dread, is unlocked when they finally learn what the priests were doing in this house for all those long years…and how many people died in the strange chapel inside. While down in the catacombs beneath Becchina…something stirs.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/houseofmysteryradio. Jake and Ron are honored and thrilled to have author Catriona Ward on the podcast! Her latest novel is Looking Glass Sound published by Tor Nightfire.https://tornightfire.com/catalog/looking-glass-sound-catriona-ward/https://us.macmillan.com/author/catrionawardI recently caught Catriona Ward at the Brookline Booksmith in Massachusetts, where she sat on a panel with former Wrath of the iOtians guest Christopher Golden and the inimitable Gretchen Felker-Martin, author of Manhunt. And it's obvious that Catriona's fan base is large and adoring, and rightly so. She has a generosity of spirit that's immediately palpable. Look no further than her willingness to talk with us in the midst of an exhausting cross country book tour. Catriona's work is influenced by her globetrotting youth. She was born in Washington, D. C., but grew up, well, all over, with stops in Kenya, Madagascar, Yemen, England, and Morocco. Catriona earned her undergraduate degree in English Literature at Oxford, and a Master's in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. In 2015, she brought her experience, education, and energy to bear on Rawblood. Published as The Girl from Rawblood in the U. S. in 2016, the book signaled the arrival of a major new talent in horror fiction and won an August Derleth Award at the British Fantasy Awards to boot. Catriona followed up in 2019 with Little Eve, which also won a Derleth and a Shirley Jackson Award. In 2022, Catriona blew readers, critics, and no less an authority than Stephen King himself away with The Last House on Needless Street, a mind bender of a novel that I hope every iOtian listener has already enjoyed. The book won an amazing third Derleth Award for Catriona. And was also shortlisted for the World Fantasy Award, the British Book Award, and a Red Tentacle Kitschie, which, for those not in the know, is a juried prize awarded for elevating the tone of genre literature. 2023 brought us Sundial, which was nominated for the Bram Stoker and Locus Awards. Of its author, Danielle Trussoni of the New York Times remarked, “Ward is willing to go places so dark, so dismal, that it borders on sadism.” In our line of work, that's high praise. Elevated horror indeed. Catriona combines elements of the psychological thriller, the gothic, and a hallucinatory high strangeness to create a voice that is uniquely hers. No one else could have written Looking Glass Sound, her other 2023 release with Tor Nightfire. Which I might add continues to publish the best of the best of contemporary horror. Catriona spoke with us about this book from a hotel room in the Twilight Zone, en route to her next speaking gig. As a nutrition and planetary health researcher, Christopher Golden takes a keen interest in the second of 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and its aim to end hunger. But Golden's research also focuses on “hidden hunger,” a term he uses to describe the impact of dietary deficiencies in micronutrients such as iron, zinc, fatty acids, and vitamins A and B12.Hidden hunger, he argues in the second episode of the How to Save Humanity in 17 Goals podcast series, could be better addressed if more people adopted a diet that includes more ‘blue' or aquatic foods. These include fish, molluscs and plant species.Golden, who is based at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, says discussions about hunger and food security have tended to focus on terrestrial food production. As soil nutrient levels deplete and farmland becomes scarcer as human populations rise, more attention needs to be paid to marine and freshwater food sources, he adds. But rising sea temperatures threaten millions of people in equatorial regions whose diets are rich in blue foods. As aquatic species migrate polewards in search of cooler waters, their livelihoods and food security are at risk. Each episode of How to Save Humanity in 17 Goals, a Working Scientist podcast series from Nature Careers, features researchers whose work addresses one or more the targets. The first six episodes are produced in partnership with Nature Food, and introduced by Juliana Gil, its chief editor. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This month, we discuss books with magic, our final prompt from the 2023 Books and Bites Bingo Reading Challenge. Our picks include an anthology of witchy tales; a novel about the magic of sourdough starter, robot arms, and the human who works with both; and a YA fairytale set in contemporary times. If you're participating in Books & Bites Bingo, don't forget to turn in your bingo card throughout the month of December!Michael's PickThe anthology Hex Life: Wicked New Tales of Witchery, edited by Christopher Golden and Rachel Autumn Deering, contains 18 stories from authors like Sherrilyn Kenyon, Sarah Langan, Tananarive Due, Alma Katsu, and Kelley Armstrong. These stories of witchery range from cozy and humorous, to fantastical, to spooky and downright scary.Pairing: Channel your inner Audrey from the story “Bless Your Heart” and whip up a batch of Seven-Layer Magic Bars.Carrie's PickIn Robin Sloan's novel Sourdough, main character Lois is a young programmer who works at General Dexterity, a San Francisco tech company that programs robotic arms. Lois works so much, she sometimes sleeps at the office and drinks meal replacements instead of eating. But when two brothers give her their sourdough starter, a whole new world opens up to her, one filled with the magic inside a new community food market–including her own singing, possibly sinister starter.Pairing: San Francisco Sourdough from the book Super Sourdough by Great British Baking Show contestant James Morton.Jacqueline's PickThe Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black is an enchanting YA fairytale set in contemporary times. In this novel, Black returns to her dangerous, alluring world of faerie tales. This fantasy novel's complex worldbuilding is full of romance, terror, and adventure.Pairing: Old Fashioned Blackberry Pie, a recipe that will remind you of the magic that is childhood, when you could play all day, spending hours in the sun picking wild blackberries.

Jimmy went to New York Comic Con (NYCC) last week and got about 12 interviews and 1 press room. Producer Joe even got an interview in! In this episode, Jimmy covered the press room for Audible's new audio original series SLAYERS: A BUFFYVERSE STORY. Many of the original BTVS cast are back to do the voices. In this room were Amber Benson, Christopher Golden, Charisma Carpenter, Emma Caulfield Ford, James Marsters, James Charles Leary, Juliet Landau and newcomer Laya DeLeon Hayes. Everyone was so happy to return to their roles and play in the familiar world. Super fun time! BAD SOUND WARNING! Attention: No idea why or how but there was a lot of interference during the press room. We're so upset as it was such a joyful time. Producer Joe was going to scrap it but we thought we should at least let the loyal fans hear what they can and decide if they want to bear with the technical problems. Massive apologies. We're just as disappointed. But we hope you can enjoy. Also, get a hold of us! Email Facebook Comic News Insider Thanks for listening!

Jimmy is super tired from all the activities and festivities but happy to bring you the awesome coverage he got. In this episode, he gives his overall recap of the show. Good to bad. Happy to sad. Sane to mad. Lame to rad. Er...mom to dad? You'll hear it all! Please continue to come back over the next few weeks to hear more interviews from the likes of Soo Lee, Sweeney Boo, Arielle Jovellanos, Rev Valdez, Meriden Angeles (Kwento Comics), Sarah Gordon, Colleen AF Venable, Erica Schultz, Dee Snider, Si Spurrier and Hugh Howey. Happy Halloween from the iOtians! We're celebrating by replaying our most downloaded episode ever! All Hallows takes place on Halloween Night in 1984. Do yourself a favor and read this book after all the trick-or-treaters are done taking your precious candy!Jake and Ron chat with the New York Times bestseller and two-time Bram Stoker Award winner about his latest novel, All Hallows! The book is set in 1984 in Massachusetts. Since Jake and Christopher both live near the Boston area, they end up talking not only about All Hallows, but about common experiences they had as horror fans growing up in the New England eighties. At 55, Christopher Golden has been nominated for the British Fantasy Award, the Eisner Award, and multiple Shirley Jackson Awards. He's been nominated for the prestigious Bram Stoker Award 10 times in eight different categories. He's won twice--once for Cut, his excellent edited collection of horror writers on horror film, and more recently for Ararat, his opening salvo in the riveting Ben Walker series. It's likely as not he'll win again--because, like his former podcast co-host Jonathan Maberry, his imagination is seemingly inexhaustible.Jake first encountered Golden's work in 1997, when his Hellboy novel, The Lost Army, was released by Dark Horse. He immediately recognized that there was at least one writer other than Mike Mignola who really knew how to write one of the great characters in comics. Dark Horse apparently realized it, too, and went on to publish two more of Golden's Hellboy novels. Golden and Mignola together expanded Hellboy's "Otherverse," introducing readers to Joe Golem and the Baltimores.A complete accounting of Golden's other work would require more time than we have. It would include a stint as a writer for Marvel's Punisher, a series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer tie-Ins, The Body of Evidence series, several series for young adult readers, and a slew of terrific standalone novels, including one of our favorites from last year, The Road of Bones (which you should run out and buy right now ... or after you listen to this interview). This year's All Hallows is set in the same fictional New England town as Golden's 2014 novel Snow Blind. We sat down to talk with Golden about All Hallows, which is releasing on January 24th.All Hallows by Christopher Goldenhttps://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250280299/allhallowsChristopher Golden Web Sitehttps://www.christophergolden.com/The Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansLinktree: https://linktr.ee/wrathoftheiotianspodcastWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicA Spooky Night by Material GurlLicensed under the Soundstripe Music License AgreementLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sounds Music License Agreement

The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
Good Monday morning! We are blessed by the voice of Michael Cirillo on the pod this week. Today we are following the continuing story of Tesla's NACS chargers, celebrating the Automotive News 40 under 40 list, and checking in on an AI lawsuit by some famous authors.Show Notes with links:Another domino has fallen in Tesla's favor as Mercedes-Benz announced that they will integrate the NACS charging connector in their EVs, beginning in 2024.The 2024 models will include a NACS adapter to the CCS connector. In 2025 and beyond, the vehicles will have a NACS port.Mercedes is also planning a charging network of more than 2500 high-power chargers in North America with some sites opening in late 2023.Volkswagen, BMW, Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, Stellantis and Jaguar Land Rover are the remaining major North American OEMs who haven't adopted the new standard. The 12th 40 Under 40 Retail class has been announced by Automotive News, honoring executives, sales and service managers, a general counsel and more.Editor Dan Shine said he was struck by how much More Than Cars reminded him of the 40 Under 40 awards. “[More Than Cars] reminded me of the special stories behind so many of the people we cover… People who were born into it and those who took circuitous routes to the automotive retail industry.”Some recognizable faces for the ASOTU-verse: Dayna Kleve, Director of diversity, engagement & foundation at Walser Automotive Group, Felicia Rey, Owner loyalty manager at Lynnes Nissan CityThe list also includes Tristan Topps, a former Ms. United States, Kristina Perez-Cubas who performed at the 2007 Super Bowl Halftime Show, Keri Lanzavecchia who took 3 attempts to pass her written learner's permit and Ronnie Lowenfield who has a collection of over 2500 bottles of bourbon.Sarah Silverman and authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey are suing OpenAI and Meta, alleging copyright infringement as their AI chatbots, trained on illegally obtained datasets, have been summarizing the authors' books without permission. The authors argue that the datasets used by Meta have illicit origins, pointing out that one of the sources for its training datasets, ThePile, was assembled by a company called EleutherAI, which allegedly used content from the Bibliotik private tracker.Lawyers in the case have heard from other writers, authors, and publishers who are concerned about ChatGPT's ability to generate text similar to that found in copyrighted materials.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
