On this, our 327th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss West coast politics, propaganda, and AI. First: the insurgent campaign of Spencer Pratt in the race for mayor of Los Angeles is going strong. He is by far the best hope for Los Angeles, given fires and filth, homelessness and crime, drugs and corruption. Then: propaganda from Iran is remarkably compelling. And: Bret proposes that the model of AI that we are living under is degenerate intellectual communism, and that we have been given no choice. And: there is so much new under the sun—but AI may blind us to its discovery.*****Our sponsors:Mars Men: Natural testosterone booster supplement. You've heard of Twitch, formerly Justin.tv, the website where you watch sweaty guys play Fortnite. But are you aware that there is a dark and twisted bizarro Twitch called 'Kick'? It's where some of our planet's greatest degenerates have decided to call home, with extremely lax terms of service allowing them to do and show much more than they could on the comparatively draconian purple app. Your children are watching this filth, mouth agog, and it's letting them vicariously experience what it's like to be the most annoying prick on the high street. Or worse, watching 'rapper' Drake mindlessly bet on slots with house money [allegedly].Noted establishmentarians James and Raph stretched on their shoulder length rubber gloves to sort through one of the internets strangest pass times - watching other people exist. But first, a quick run down on GameStop's offer to buy Ebay.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The energy is electric as the crew recaps Concrete's "Aztec warrior" moment introducing the main event fighters in Vegas for Cinco de Mayo weekend!
The Sun faces a “degenerate” future. That’s not a value judgment – it’s physics. When the Sun can no longer produce nuclear reactions, its core will collapse. How far it collapses is limited by a type of pressure exerted by its atoms – degeneracy pressure. Today, the Sun is “fusing” atoms of hydrogen to make helium. When the hydrogen is gone, it’ll fuse the helium to make carbon and oxygen. But the Sun isn’t massive enough to extend that process, so its nuclear furnace will be extinguished. Fusion releases energy, which balances the pull of gravity. That keeps the Sun puffed up. Right now, it’s big enough to hold a million Earths. When fusion stops, gravity will win out. The core will shrink to the size of Earth itself. But it’ll still be about half as heavy as the present-day Sun. So a chunk the size of a sugar cube would weigh a ton. The dead core won’t shrink beyond that. That’s because the electrons in the core will exert their own pressure – degeneracy pressure. They can be squeezed only so much before they run out of “elbow room” and halt the collapse. That will leave a white dwarf – a dead cosmic cinder – to cool and fade over the eons. The galaxy is littered with white dwarfs, but none of them is bright enough to see with the eye alone. The closest one is a companion of Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, which is low in the southwest as night falls – a star that faces its own “degenerate” future. On a muggy spring day in 2018, the Supreme Court handed down a decision that transformed America. In a 6-3 ruling, the high court cleared the way for legal sports betting from coast to coast. Since then, all bets have been off: Americans have wagered more than $500 billion on sports. And now, thanks to prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket, we're betting on everything — the weather, where the next US airstrike will land in Iran, whether Jesus Christ will return before 2027. McKay Coppins, a staff writer at The Atlantic, wanted to write about this brave new world of betting. He got more than he bargained for. His story — "My Year as a Degenerate Gambler" — is the cover of The Atlantic's April issue. Watch The Next Big Idea on YouTube! You can find our episodes here. The journalist McKay Coppins wasn't a gambling man. But when his employer The Atlantic staked him $10,000 to bet on the 2025 NFL season, he couldn't say no.
Gambling is ever-present in America these days. After the Supreme Court opened the floodgates to legalized sports gambling, Americans went from legally betting $4.9 billion on sports in 2017 to at least $160 billion last year. When the Atlantic staff writer McKay Coppins wanted to do a story about sports gambling, he and his editor thought, Why not try it himself? He had never really gambled before. What could go wrong? The magazine staked him $10,000 (partly a religious workaround) and sent him on his way. But over the course of the NFL season—and betting whenever and wherever he could—Coppins ended up getting (and losing) more than he bargained for. The Monkey's Paw Curls Isn't "may you get exactly what you asked for" one of those ancient Chinese curses? Since we last spoke, prediction markets have gone to the moon, rising from millions to billions in monthly volume. For a few weeks in October, Polymarket founder Shayne Coplan was the world's youngest self-made billionaire (now it's some AI people). Kalshi is so accurate that it's getting called a national security threat. The catch is, of course, that it's mostly degenerate gambling, especially sports betting. Kalshi is 81% sports by monthly volume. Polymarket does better - only 37% - but some of the remainder is things like this $686,000 market on how often Elon Musk will tweet this week - currently dominated by the "140 - 164 times" category. (ironically, this seems to be a regulatory difference - US regulators don't mind sports betting, but look unfavorably on potentially "insensitive" markets like bets about wars. Polymarket has historically been offshore, and so able to concentrate on geopolitics; Kalshi has been in the US, and so stuck mostly to sports. But Polymarket is in the process of moving onshore; I don't know if this will affect their ability to offer geopolitical markets) Degenerate gambling is bad. Insofar as prediction markets have acted as a Trojan Horse to enable it, this is bad. Insofar as my advocacy helped make this possible, I am bad. I can only plead that it didn't really seem plausible, back in 2021, that a presidential administration would keep all normal restrictions on sports gambling but also let prediction markets do it as much as they wanted. If only there had been some kind of decentralized forecasting tool that could have given me a canonical probability on this outcome! Still, it might seem that, whatever the degenerate gamblers are doing, we at least have some interesting data. There are now strong, minimally-regulated, high-volume prediction markets on important global events. In this column, I previously claimed this would revolutionize society. People are starting to wake up to this, and call it for what it truly is, but I still think they're hedging too much. They're not going all the way, because many people are ignorant of the freedom-obsessed sea in which they swim. This is a hugely important topic that will impact how our kids and grandkids grow up and experience life, and I want to call it out right now: We're moving into a period where there will be a cultural war between polygamy and monogamy as the Christian sexual ethic continues to be cast off in our society. In this episode I break down a recent article and share why this is so devastating and why Christians still have the best response, as long as we actually respond. On this episode, we talk about: 0:00 Intro 3:00 Framing the debate 6:31 The most powerful incentive of all 8:43 Everyone hedges (and I wish they wouldn't) 11:03 The root of the problem 13:26 Polygamy vs. Monogamy Subscribe on Substack ➡️ https://jeremypryor.substack.com Follow Jeremy on: Instagram: https://instagram.com/jeremympryor/ X: https://x.com/jeremympryor Resources Mentioned: Aaron Renn's Newsletter Article: https://substack.com/home/post/p-184845957 --- Welcome to Jeremy Pryor's Podcast, or what I like to call, "Jeremy Pryor Unfiltered." This week, I talk with Matt Casamassina about his genre-bending sci-fi-horror-thriller Degenerate. He shares his unique approach to audiobook production, how reading Stephen King as a kid influenced his writing, and how one of his co-workers inspired the story.Degenerate by Matt CasamassinaMason Kowalski, a twenty-four year-old copywriter for a San Mateo startup, is on the verge of a nervous breakdown when he inexplicably suffers widespread vision loss in one eye. The doctors say it's macular degeneration triggered by overwhelming stress, but he wonders if it's something more, especially when the shadows in his peripheral vision begin to take shape and whisper wonderful and horrible things to him. Is it madness or destiny? The answer could destroy everything and everyone he holds dear.
