Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Marvel Studios appears to have found the leader of its new mutant team, as Deadline reported last week that Heartstopper and Warfare star Kit Connor has landed the role of Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, in the future MCU X-Men film. Sources say Connor went through much the same process as Samara Weaving, who was attached as Emma Frost the week prior, meeting with Schreier and Marvel president Kevin Feige alongside a group of candidates who tested after the July 4th holiday before the studio settled on him. Neither Marvel nor Connor has confirmed the casting, and the film, written by Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-creator Joanna Calo, still has no release date. Cyclops has been played on screen before by James Marsden and Tye Sheridan, with Marsden set to reprise the role in December's Avengers: Doomsday. Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed the one-billion-dollar mark overseas in just twelve days of release, making it the second-fastest film ever to reach that number abroad behind Avengers: Endgame. The Destin Daniel Cretton film now stands at $1.67 billion worldwide, split between $654.3 million domestically and $1.013 billion internationally, which makes it the twelfth highest-grossing movie of all time and only the sixteenth ever to clear a billion in foreign markets alone. Universal had a milestone of its own to celebrate, as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey passed $1.1 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing film of his career ahead of The Dark Knight Rises, while also becoming the biggest IMAX release ever with $289 million, and it still has China to open on Friday. James Gunn spent part of a Threads session last week putting down one of the most persistent rumors surrounding Matt Reeves' Batman trilogy, telling a fan who asked whether The Batman Part III was being filmed simultaneously with Part II simply, “I can deny.” The theory had gained steam over years of delays, most recently when a redesigned Part II logo appeared to work a Roman numeral III into the artwork, and it offered fans a tidy explanation for why the sequel has taken so long to arrive. In reality, Part II only began principal photography in London in June, and Warner Bros. has already pushed the film from October 2027 to February 18, 2028. Sony and Nintendo's live-action The Legend of Zelda has cast Australian actor Uli Latukefu as Ganondorf under a multi-picture deal, with Severance's Dichen Lachman playing Impa and The Handmaid's Tale's Yvonne Strahovski reported as a queen character. What employers should know about key developments this week: Severance Agreement Overhaul: The No Severance Ultimatums Act, awaiting Governor Kathy Hochul's signature, would extend a 21-day review period plus a seven-day revocation period to all employees and require severance agreements to explicitly state that the employee has the right to consult counsel. The legislation would take effect immediately upon signature. Trapped at Work Act Amendments: On December 19, 2026, New York's ban on "stay or pay" promissory notes takes effect. The Trapped at Work Act carves out financial bonuses and wage advances and adds new conditions for tuition repayment agreements. New York joins California and Connecticut in banning certain promissory notes. Earned Safe and Sick Time Act Update: Amended Earned Safe and Sick Time Act rules, now in effect for New York City employers, require 32 hours of unpaid protected time off immediately upon hire and set new obligations for employers that use electronic systems to track sick leave balances for departing employees. Today's episode is a little different. It's just me, going deep on something I've never fully unpacked before: what it's actually been like to write my first novel. I take you back to 2023, when I tried to sell a nonfiction book about the science of curiosity—and how both publishers I was in talks with pulled out of the auction the morning it was supposed to happen. Casey Williams of Liebert Cassidy Whitmore explains how nonprofit leaders can restructure responsibly, reduce organizational risk, and preserve dignity throughout an extraordinarily difficult business decision.The process begins by defining the problem the organization is trying to solve. Is the nonprofit closing a program, reducing its budget by $1 million, responding to repeated deficits, or changing its operating model? Casey advises leaders to document that objective before discussing individual employees.“A reorganization is about solving a business problem,” she tells us. Performance concerns belong in performance management—not inside a reduction-in-force process.Casey also outlines how leadership teams can develop measurable selection criteria around positions rather than personalities. Seniority, experience, education, documented performance ratings, and other defined factors can support a more consistent decision. Vague judgments such as attitude, energy, or cultural fit may invite favoritism or unconscious bias.The conversation also examines important employment-law considerations. Casey explains that the federal WARN Act can require 60 days' notice when qualifying employers with approximately 100 or more employees conduct certain layoffs affecting 50 or more workers. State “mini-WARN” laws may establish lower thresholds; California, for example, can cover employers with 75 employees.Severance, release agreements, final pay, accrued vacation, benefits, property returns, internal communications, and individual meetings all require advance coordination. Employees covered by certain age-discrimination release rules may receive 21 days to consider an individual agreement, while qualifying group layoffs may require 45 days, followed by a seven-day revocation period.“Having the hard conversation actually is compassionate,” Casey says. Early planning gives leaders more room to communicate clearly, answer employees' immediate questions, and demonstrate the organization's values when those values are being watched most closely.This discussion offers business guidance for nonprofit executives, human resource professionals, finance leaders, department managers, and boards. Witnessing adaptation is one of our great pleasures. How does one transform an audio medium into a visual one? It's fantastic when a comic gives you a jolt. It's the story of a people who've witnessed so much monstrosity at the hands of invaders. It's a story of people finding strength in their neighbors, ancestors, and legends. Set in Puerto Rico, the main character is Loli, an activist protesting an incoming resort, the face of which is yuppy CEO Simon Hunt, who is using every slippery trick in the book to break ground despite opposition. Loli is incensed and focused on stopping the overdevelopment of her ancestral lands, but is her fixation in part because she is avoiding processing a horrendous grief, since her father died alone in a hospital during Hurricane Maria? This week on the podcast, we speak with Julio Anta and Daniel Irizarri about Beast of Borikén, witnessing endless horror, and hope through collective action. We discuss the influence of The Creature from the Black Lagoon and the appeal of monsters. Also, what does it all have to do with Robocop 2?
