This week, Kim Masters speaks to Severance director and cinematographer, Jessica Lee Gagné. The Quebecois filmmaker reflects on her collaboration with Severance executive producer Ben Stiller, which began on the Showtime limited series Escape at Dannemora. She discusses becoming the first woman to be Emmy-nominated in the same year for both cinematography and directing in a drama series, and the major leap of faith it took to transition from a successful career as a DP into the world of directing. Plus, Disney is reshaping its sports strategy, launching a standalone ESPN app, and making billion-dollar deals with WWE and the NFL. Will the NFL's new stake in ESPN bring scrutiny from the Trump-led DOJ? Also, the Skydance-Paramount deal is done, and the Ellisons may have their sights set on Warner Bros. Kim Masters and Matt Belloni break it all down.
We're back with another 90-minute movie for a crazy busy August. We're chatting about Ben Stiller's Zoolander. Hard to believe Ben Stiller directed both this and Severance. The hit series “Severance” managed to knock “Ted Lasso” out of its place as the most-watched show on Apple TV+. That's partly due to its unique premise, which explores a nightmarish experiment to enforce work-life balance by splitting a person's consciousness into two. There's the you that goes into work (your “innie”) and the you that lives outside of work (your “outie”). A few months ago, actors Tramell Tillman and Zach Cherry — also known as their characters Mr. Milchick and Dylan G. — sat down with Tom Power to discuss all things “Severance.”
This week, we discuss two crime films set in Jamaica. The first is The Harder They Come (1972), which stars Jimmy Cliff as Ivanhoe Martin, a young man who, after failing to make it as a musician, becomes an outlaw. The film's soundtrack is famed for bringing reggae to a global audience. The second is Yardie (2018), which tells the story of a young man named D who moves from Jamaica to London in the 1980s and becomes embroiled in the criminal underworld. ARE YOU READY, REFINER? IT DOESN'T GET MUCH COOLER THAN THIS...The episode "Chikhai Bardo" blew a lot of people away when it premiered as the 7th episode of the second season. A brand new leader was in the Director's Chair but she was a familiar face to both cast and crew. This is Cinematographer Jessica Lee Gagne's first foray into directing. Based on the incredible success of this episode, she'll probably never be a cinematographer again. We're going back in time with a blushing Mark and Gemma. We'll see how they met and fell in love. We'll ALSO venture down to the 'Testing Floor' where a very alive Gemma is being subjected to bizarre tortures by Robby Benson and Sandra Bernhard. Mark is passed out on his couch and Reghabi and Devon are about to come to blows over his body. It's a wild one, Refiner...and this is just PART ONE. Strap in and fire up that workstation. On this week's show, we catch up on a smokin' boatload o' new-ish singles and pour one out for the late Ozzy Osbourne. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.

WELCOME BACK FOR PART TWO OF "ATILLA"!!Comb your hair and put on your best shirt, Refiner! We're headed to dinner! Would you rather have a cozy little gathering at a friend's house, or maybe a meet up at a well-known local Chinese place? Either way, this week we've got you covered on 'Severed'!Outie-Irv has accepted an invite for an evening of Ham and Wine at Outie-Burt's place. This will be the first time Irving has met Burt's significant other: Fields. It's also our first chance to meet the elusive Fields. He has some interesting information to impart, if he doesn't pass out first! We also get a chance to tour the incredible home of Burt and Fields. In reality, it's the Gerald Luss house in Ossinging, NY. We will get WAY into it!!Over at "Zufu", a favorite joint in Kier for Chinese, outie-Mark Scout is trying to curb his reintegration appetitte. As he's feeding his face, Helena Eagan walks in. She has a seat at a booth...all alone. Helena may have had plans other than dinner when she followed Mark Scout into this place. She's quite the aggressive one!! Helena does her best to seduce a confused Mark Scout, but it doesn't work. The meeting at the restaurant prompts Mark to take some serious action regarding his chip. Reghabit 'floods the chip' and Mark can't handle it. We leave him passed out in his livingroom with Devon and Reghabi trying to rouse him. It does not look good. You're okay with Cumin, right?? Good. It's time to hit 'play' on Atilla Part TWO.***A BIG 'thank you' to Research Volunteer Refiner Vinny P. Tramell Tillman plays Mr. Milchick on Severance, the bizarre, fascinating sci-fi workplace show on Apple TV +. Tramell Tillman is great as Mr Milchick. He shares how he collaborated with Ben Stiller to create the character. He also talks with us about his upbringing in Baltimore, his experience being raised in the Baptist church, and his early appearance on The Wire.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Matthew James Thomas opens up in this heartfelt conversation about his journey from a rebellious, bullied teen in the English countryside to finding truth and belonging on stage. Growing up feeling misunderstood, he found safety and purpose in acting, discovering early on that truth-telling through performance was his way of making sense of the world. He shares the emotional weight he carries playing Harry Potter on Broadway, how he navigates the show's intense emotional peaks night after night, and why live theatre never gets old — even after over 135 performances. We also dive into the legacy of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, his love-hate relationship with social media, and why he believes musicals are only great when they get it exactly right. And yes, there's some mutual fan-girling over Severance, a hilarious attempt at explaining Les Misérables, and plenty of insight into what makes live theatre both terrifying and electrifying. Matthew James Thomas is a British actor, director, and songwriter. He originated the title role in the 2013 Broadway revival of Pippin, starred as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, and has appeared in Accused, Summer of Rockets, Britannia High, Billy Elliot, and About a Boy. He currently stars as Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway.
