Teki Latex is a progressive presence in the French electronic music scene. He got his start as a founding MC in Parisian hip-hop act TTC, along with collaborators including DJ Orgasmic and Para One. He co-founded the influential Institubes label, then continued pushing his genreless vision via Sound Pellegrino. He’s also the selector for the Paris arm of vogue legends House of Ninja. Here, Teki Latex shares his vision for the future of club music and retraced the evolution of his musical tastes and work.

Rare sur la scène rap depuis 2014, Joke n’a toujours pas sorti son album “UltraViolet” normalement prêt depuis novembre 2017. Mais chose étonnante, moins Joke rappe, plus sa présence se fait sentir à travers de nouveaux artistes depuis quelques années, preuve de l’énorme influence du Montpelliérain sur le rap français. Hyper novateur au début des années 2010, Joke a su retourner toutes les conceptions du rap qu’avaient les jeunes fans qui en écoutaient. Avant gardiste à défaut d’avoir été carrément en avance sur ses compatriotes, à la synthèse d’un rap un peu street mais pas trop, mâtiné de musique électronique mais pas uniquement, Joke n’a pourtant pas été propulsé mégastar de son milieu comme il aurait dû. Influenceur il l’a été, mais quand on a de l’influence sur des artistes qui n’ont pas d’influence, peut-on s’ériger un grand nom ? Arrivé un peu trop tôt, initiateur d’une période qu’il n’a pas accompagnée, qu’attendre d’Ateyaba - son nouveau nom de scène - en 2018 ? Un son nouveau, sa note, mais quelque chose de différent pour celui qui n’a pas l’air prêt à intégrer ses descendants à sa production musicale. Et même si la nouvelle génération ne le cite pas comme influence, l’engouement du public est toujours là et ses récents featurings sont plutôt bons. Alors Joke passera-t-il dignement le flambeau à Ateyaba ?
