On this episode, Marc talks with Donna-Claire Chesman. She's the author of “Crybaby: The Artists Who Shaped Emo Rap,” published on January 21, 2025. It's a fascinating look at a genre that grew up from the Soundcloud underground to become wildly popular, focusing on artists like Atmosphere, Lil Peep, Yung Lean, and Juice WRLD. “Crybaby” does justice to a musical subculture that's more complex and rewarding than you might realize. As Donna-Claire writes, “The history of Emo Rap is imperfect, and in many ways, 'Crybaby' is an imperfect reconstruction and critical examination of a genre that is felt more than articulated…at one point I toyed with the idea of asking my interview subjects who emo rap “was for,” except I quickly understood that emo rap is for everyone.” To buy "Crybaby" and support independent bookstores, go here: https://bookshop.org/p/books/crybaby-the-artists-who-shaped-emo-rap-donna-claire-chesman/21650174We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Donna-Claire Chesman!
This episode originally aired on September 7, 2023. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of musicians who create with an air of mystery, but who have a fantastically straightforward chat here: Ethel Cain and Adam McIlwee. Ethel Cain is a character created by Hayden Anhedonia, though one that's been sort of all-consuming. Anhedonia began releasing music under the name in 2019, finding her sound and her vibe over the next couple of years before releasing the absolutely epic Preacher's Daughter in May of 2022. The album, a concept collection about the life and ultimate demise of Ethel Cain, skillfully moves through sounds from a sort of Gothic Americana to slowcore to ambient sounds to who knows what, exactly, other than it's thoroughly engaging. The album was pretty quickly hailed as a masterful debut, and Cain found herself not only the darling of the music world, but with some prominent modeling gigs as well. As you'll hear in this chat, though, the spotlight has gotten a little bit bright for her taste lately. She's currently on the European festival circuit, though she'll head back to the States in October for sold-out shows at really interesting venues. Check out “Crush” right here. Cain and today's other guest, Adam McIlwee, go way back. He was an early supporter of her music, and appears on her Inbred EP under his most prominent alias, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal. Though he started his musical journey as part of the pop-punkish band Tigers Jaw, he's moved in a dozen other directions since. He founded the emo-rap collective GothBoiClique back in 2012, which briefly counted Lil Peep among its members. As Wicca Phase, though, McIlwee combines synth-pop with more acoustic sounds and more hammering beats, depending on the track. His latest release under the name is self-titled, and it just came out in June. It's well worth checking out. In fact, check out “Moving Without Movement” right here. Now for two people who've created such interesting mystiques, this is a refreshingly down-to-earth conversation in which they talk about trying to carve out space as middle-class musicians who don't expect to conquer the charts with their music—but who'd love to be able to make a decent living at it. They talk about what to do when you hit a touring wall—this chat took place not long after Cain fainted onstage in Australia—and how great Vicks Steam Inhalers are for singers. Hey Vicks, you might have a couple of spokespeople here if you play your cards right. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Hayden Anhedonia aka. Ethel Cain and Adam McIlwee aka. Wicca Phase Springs Eternal for chatting. Life happened and this is a week late! We engage in post-election discourse, our move to Blue Sky, train-hopping, Charli XCX on SNL, Cole's experience at the recent NYC Cold World show, Matt's excursion to a strange Static Dress/Jager Henry show, the seventh anniversary of Lil Peep's death, another damn When We Were Young and the potential decline of festival season, Kublai Khan's purpose and TikTok fame, heavy music as pop music, SEX IS FREE, new music we've been enjoying and more!!!
In September, the visionary electronic producer SOPHIE released what was promoted as her final album, three years after her tragic passing. And people had a lot of opinions on it – as they usually do with music that comes out after an artist's death, whether it's Tupac, Avicii, Lil Peep, DJ Rashad, Prince, or many, many others. There are moral and musical questions to consider. So this week, Kikelomo and Juba are joined by artist, curator and cultural commentator Christa Belle to talk through the complicated emotions posthumous releases inspire. During his short career, Lil Peep quickly became the voice of Gen Z. After pioneering the grunge-laden emo-rap genre that blew up on Soundcloud in the mid 2010s, he was selling out venues from the US to Russia – all without ever having released any music. He wore his emotions not just on his sleeve but on his face, and his powerful lyrics told the story of a young man struggling with mental health issues and substance addiction which took his life in 2017. In our final episode of the first season of Empathy for the Devil, Matt Thomas returns to tell us the story of a musician working in a different time to our other episodes, but whose story still resonates profoundly with the themes we've been discussing. From childhood trauma to anxiety and addiction, to the identity issues of a character who just wanted to be ‘Everybody's Everything', Lil Peep's story rounds off our season in a tragic tale of an artist whose unique style was lost too soon. This week's ‘One for the Road' is Barbara Kingsolver's award winning novel, ‘Demon Copperhead'. A reworking of Dickens' classic ‘David Copperfield', this book explores the life of the eponymous protagonist, a young orphan growing up in the US Appalachians during the opioid crisis, and is a profoundly moving story of a left behind America and the effects that prescription drugs have had on the region. You can buy a copy here: https://www.faber.co.uk/product/9780571376483-demon-copperhead/ Content Warnings: substance use, mental health, childhood trauma, and his death by drug overdose. We also discuss bullying, the experience of homelessness, and the psychological impacts of witnessing 9/11. IMPORTANT: Alcohol withdrawal happens once an individual is physically dependent/chemically addicted and can be fatal and should only be attempted with medical guidance/assistance. The most serious form of withdrawal is called delirium tremens, or DTs. People with severe withdrawal symptoms or DTs should always have a drink if they need it while professional help is sought. In the latest episode of Columbia House Party, hosts Jake Goldsbie and Blake Murphy are joined by Sasha Kalra (@sashakalra) to discuss Lil Peep's 2017 album Come Over When You're Sober, Pt. 1. While Lil Peep is admittedly outside of the podcast's normal genre wheelhouse, his influences are so similar to the podcast's and to the artists that the podcast covers that he represents a unique look into the out-of-genre effects of industry and cultural changes. Find out more about how Lil Peep earned a major following by sampling pop-punk and emo songs on Soundcloud, what the status of this subgenre is following Peep's untimely passing, and what Jake thinks of his first taste of emo-rap on this week's podcast. She is an assistant editor and regular contributor to The Paris Review and her work has appeared in publications such as Interview, Praxis, Heavy Traffic, and Cabinet. Pøøk is an up-and-coming emo rapper, singer, and songwriter hailing from upstate NY. With a deep passion for music and a raw, introspective style, Pøøk has been making waves in the industry since 2020. Despite the challenges of pursuing a music career while completing her studies, Pøøk successfully obtained a bachelor's degree in applied psychology. Her musical journey began with the release of her debut track "Drain U" in December 2020. The song resonated with listeners as Pøøk fearlessly shared her struggles with anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. During this time, Pøøk worked tirelessly, using a humble setup consisting of a laptop and a Walmart microphone in the confines of her trailer, pouring her emotions into her music.Determined to elevate her craft, Pøøk's life took a positive turn when she and her girlfriend moved into a new apartment. It was here that she set up her own home studio, enabling her to fully immerse herself in her creative process. In a serendipitous turn of events, Pøøk connected with Fallen Seraph of the 33rd Legion through an app called Vampr, where she was invited to join the collective.33rd Legion, a collective of artists with a similar sound to the likes of Lil Peep and Gothboiclique, provided Pøøk with a supportive community and a platform to further showcase her unique musical talents. The collaboration proved to be fruitful, as Pøøk and Fallen Seraph developed a strong musical bond. Their partnership deepened when Fallen Seraph relocated from Mississippi to NY, allowing them to continue creating music together and performing at various shows.Pøøk's artistry is fueled by her deeply personal experiences and her desire to connect with her audience on a profound level. Her lyrics reflect her vulnerability, addressing themes of mental health, self-expression, and the complexities of human emotions. With a captivating blend of emo, rap, and singing, Pøøk is forging her own path in the music industry and leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of her listeners. As she continues to evolve as an artist, Pøøk is poised to make an even greater impact on the music scene, cementing her place as a rising star. Hosted on Acast. Eli Hurts gives some insight into the new single, sharing: "Me and my friend Katie wrote this song in the desert. The whole thing is sort of a front because it's easy to get angry when someone leaves you but it's way harder to just be sad. So this song is the angry part. Scream away."With influences including the likes of My Chemical Romance, 100 Gecs, Steven Sondheim, Smashing Pumpkins, Lil Peep and Weezer, Eli Hurts is a relatable and exciting artist for 2023.We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Hollywood Undead over Zoom video!Multi-platinum rap rock band Hollywood Undead shares the music video for “House of Mirrors” featuring multi-genre sensation Jelly Roll. Available exclusively on the digital version of Hotel Kalifornia Deluxe.Originally released in 2022, Hotel Kalifornia represents “a juxtaposition between the ‘haves' and the 'have-nots,' highlighting the ongoing homelessness and cost of living crisis that is affecting the band's home state of California.” The album highlights the best aspects of what Hollywood Undead has become known for, garnering support from Revolver, SPIN, New Noise Magazine. Hotel Kalifornia also saw placements on genre playlists such as Spotify's Rock Hard, Hard Rock & Rock Rotation, Apple Music's Breaking Hard Rock & New in Rock, and Top 40 placement at US Rock & Active Rock Radio with the standout single “City Of The Dead.”ABOUT HOLLYWOOD UNDEADNot long after the turn of the century, a collective of friends congregated around a common vision bred in the gutters and back alleys of Hollywood, CA. Under the influence of everything from gritty nineties hip-hop to industrial metal (not to mention cheap booze), they climbed out of similar experiences in poverty and hardship and vaulted to the forefront of 21st century rock music on their own terms. To this day, Hollywood Undead hinges on the bond of five individuals who relay such raw experiences into relatable anthems. However, the platinum-certified quintet—Johnny 3 Tears, J-Dog, Funny Man, Charlie Scene, and Danny—tell their story like never before on their recently released eighth full-length album, Hotel Kalifornia [Dove & Grenade Media/BMG].Throughout 2021, the boys recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles with producers Erik Ron (I Prevail, Godsmack), Andrew Migliore (Sueco, Zero 9:36 Papa Roach), and Drew Fulk (Ice Nine Kills, Lil Wayne, Lil Peep). Working face-to-face, Hollywood Undead rekindled the unbridled intensity of their formative material, yet with refinement only possible through years of grinding on the road.We want to hear from you!
