Happy Friday! It's the week's final episode, and there's plenty to discuss. Hunter starts the show by answering a question from a listener about Malkin's 1,000th game for next season. Should he have to sit out one game to get the honor at home? Would that even matter to him and the fans? He also gets into if the Penguins should rest their starters at various points during the season if the team is in a playoff spot (like NFL teams do) before touching on if Evgeni Malkin could move to the wing during this four-year deal. What would have to happen to get to that point? Would it be right away if the Penguins sign JT Miller next summer? Finally, Hunter goes around the league to catch up on all the latest news & notes. Happy August! The year continues to fly by, as does the offseason. Hunter starts the show with a segment on Evgeni Malkin as his birthday just passed. He goes into five of his favorite goals from Geno's career and how much he's meant to the fans and the city. He also gives a small scoop on Malkin regarding a particular hat that fans have been waiting for before getting into who should be on the top pairing if the team does trade Brian Dumoulin (Hint: You may not like it). Finally, Hunter looks at a potential free agent signing that the Penguins could still make if they're willing to open up some cap space via a D trade. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Getting closer to the end of daily episodes, but today is NOT that day. Hunter starts the show with a formal apology to the listeners about not pronouncing Ryan Poehling's last name right (I stink!) before getting into why the Penguins SHOULD go after someone like Vladimir Tarasenko if he still wants a trade out of St. Louis. He looks at the numbers he put up this season and why he'd be a perfect fit with Malkin, plus it would end the #RussianWingerForGeno campaign that started so many years back. He also goes into his power play impact and how it would give the Penguins an unfair man-advantage. He looks at what he would likely cost from the Blues, especially if they're getting Matthew Tkachuk from the Flames. After that, Hunter looks at the pros and cons (mostly cons) of bringing back Phil Kessel after he was mentioned in Josh Yohe's mailbag on Wednesday morning. He looks at the numbers he put up this year and why he's only going to keep declining. Finally, Hunter gets into more Matthew Tkachuk talk and which teams make the most sense for him. He also gives his opinion on who would be on the table if the Penguins tried to acquire him. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Daren closes out the 2021-22 season with John Shannon (1:00) and Paul Maurice (25:50). Shannon breaks down all the early free-agency moves, including Johnny Gaudreau signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets, the trades made by the Carolina Hurricanes, the Pittsburgh Penguins re-signing Letang and Malkin, the goalie moves made by the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers, the Islanders inactivity and the potential landing spots for Patrick Kane. Paul Maurice discusses why the Florida Panthers job was so attractive to him, the challenges that he faces taking over a team as successful as the Panthers and the tweaks that he will try to make to allow the Panthers to find victories in the playoffs. He explains why it was time to leave the Winnipeg Jets and pokes fun at his friend Pete DeBoer for being as obsessed with hockey as he is.
We play some of Ron Hextall's comments from yesterday and get into the meat of what he said. Should the Penguins sign Jarry to a new contract? How is it all going to end with Malkin? We make fun of the Arizona Coyotes. Breakfast Bytes- JJ Watt gives a commencement speech and brings up Charlie Partridge. Who is the Steelers X-Factor in 2022? PFF says Ahkello Witherspoon. Dorin says Mason Cole. Colin says Myles Jack. Crowley has Tyson Alualu/ Larry Ogunjobi. Mack said Pat Friermuth. Plus...PUNTER TALK! ROOTING FOR/ AGAINST Dorin is rooting for both Kenny Pickett and Mitch Trubisky. Chris is rooting for more NIL deals to look like what Texas Tech is doing. Crowley is rooting for David Bednar to mow down the AL tonight. Colin is rooting for one of the big ketchup bottles to wind up at the Heinz History Museum. Dorin is rooting against rules at country clubs. Mack is rooting against the home run derby. Crowley is against the NFLPA. Colin is rooting against kids shagging fly balls in the home run derby. He thinks a kid is going to get slammed.
Former NHL Goaltender and Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager Ron Hextall joined OverDrive to chat about his negotiations with Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, Sidney Crosby's influence on the extensions, Crosby's greatness on and off the ice and the addition of Jeff Petry.
Hour 2 as we continue a Monday on OverDrive with Bryan Hayes, Jonas Siegel & Dave Feschuk as the guys are joined by General Manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins Ron Hextall following their extensions of Malkin & Letang and the trade for Jeff Petry. As well Chris Solomon of the No Laying Up Podcast stops by to recap Cam Smith's Open Title & more buzz around the LIV Tour.
Afternoons 3-6 on 105.9 The X NEW WORLD ORDER. Mark is joined by Rick Tocchet to get his thoughts on the Penguins decision to bring back both Letang and Malkin and if it really is the best move for the team, as well as to discuss the rest of the NHL teams' moves in free agency so far this offseason.
What a last 24 hours for the Pittsburgh Penguins! Hunter starts the show with the obvious: The Evgeni Malkin contract! He goes into how good it is for the short-term and how the Penguins made the right choice in bringing him back, especially when you look at some of the other centers that signed for big money. He also looks at how you're going to see a motivated player who wants to prove a lot of people wrong, plus looks at the role Sidney Crosby played to get the two sides talking again. He also looks at how this move is what most of the fans wanted when all three came into the league: To go out together, even if they don't win another Stanley Cup. He also takes a shot at the people who will be miserable about this if they don't win before going into the Jan Rutta signing. Hunter looks at the data and analyzes his game to see what he's going to bring to the lineup next year. Which defenseman would he be best with? Which defenseman is going to be traded? Hunter looks at what the team must get in return for one of those players since the forward group isn't fully filled out yet. Finally, Hunter ends the show looking at the depth signings and wondering if Johan Larsson is going to be a Pittsburgh Penguin soon. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Greg started by talking about what a shocking day it was in NHL free agency. Greg said the Caps/Bruins/Penguins are all doing the same thing in running the band back. Greg thinks the postseason could have gone differently if Crosby/Rakell/Jarry weren't hurt. He thinks the Pens are better than the Bruins/Caps. "I do not think it was the right decision to bring back Malkin and to bring him back on that term."
Crowley tells his drive thru story from yesterday. The woman who took his order screamed the "F" bomb because she burned herself. Quite the ordeal. Colin then follows up w/ another McDonald's story. NHL Free Agency is upon us and the question on everyone's mind is will Johnny Gaudreau resign with the Calgary Flames or will he become a Philadelphia Flyer? Tonight, we look into what the future holds for the All Star Left Wing. What happens if the Flyers are unable to secure Gaudreau? Would they possibly look at another Flame in Matthew Tkachuk, who Calgary is also looking to ink to a long-term contract? Or will the Flyers turn their attention towards their Keystone State rivals and steal Evgeni Malkin from the Pittsburgh Penguins? It's become clear, if the Pens are going to bring Malkin back, it will be on their terms, not his. The club prioritized re-signing Kris Letang and got that done by signing the defenseman to a six-year, $36.6 million contract ($6.1 million AAV). Also on the show, we'll predict if Patrice Bergeron will take one last ride with the Boston Bruins or call it a career. Will David Krejci return to both the NHL and Bruins? Also, with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres all in the market for a No. 1 goalie, where will UFA netminders Darcy Kuemper (fresh off a Stanley Cup win), Jack Campbell, Braden Holtby, Jaroslav Halak, Thomas Greiss and Martin Jones land? Matt Murray, was on the table but late Monday evening, the Toronto Maple Leafs picked him up along with a 2023 3rd round draft pick & a 7th round pick in 2024 for future considerations. The New York Rangers now need a backup to Vezina-winning goalie Igor Shesterkin after trading Alexandar Georgiev to the Colorado Avalanche. But a more pressing issue will be signing a second-line center with both Ryan Strome and Andrew Copp becoming unrestricted free agents. The Stanley Cup champs have a busy offseason in store with many FAs, and Nazem Kadri tops the list. Ondrej Palat could be one of the steals of this free-agent class if the Tampa Bay Lightning can't sign the forward. And John Klingberg could be on the move, as well! Will old friend Claude Giroux move back home and sign with the Ottawa Senators now that they have acquired Alex DeBrincat? Answers to these questions and more plus a review of the 2022 NHL Draft, and don't forget the Shootout, where the boys hit on rapid-fire topics to close us out!
