Write a novel in a month. Sure. A page a day? Why not. But you've never seen a writing challenge quite like the one Briane Pagel set for himself. Write 365 stories in a year... oh, and the first story has to be exactly 365 words. Every day you write a story one word shorter until you come to the final day, the final story, a single word. We talk about how and why he wrote "Translated From The Original Shark: A Year Of Words" in this episode of Indie Book Talk. I had a great opportunity to speak with Edward and it was super awesome. Edward is definitely a superb writer. He has been writing for many years and Edward told Keepin It Real all about his journey and how he became an amazing writer. He has wrote for many people and doesn't mind helping other writers and authors. Edward Willett, an award-winning Saskatchewan-based author of more than sixty books of science fiction, fantasy, and non-fiction for readers of all ages, has launched a Kickstarter campaign on March 8 to fund a third annual anthology featuring some of the top writers of science fiction and fantasy working today, all of whom were guests on his Aurora Award-winning podcast, The Worldshapers (www.theworldshapers.com). Shapers of Worlds Volume III featured new fiction from Griffin Barber, Gerald Brandt, Miles Cameron, Sebastien de Castell, Kristi Charish, David Ebenbach, Mark Everglade, Frank J. Fleming, Violette Malan, Anna Mocikat, James Morrow, Jess E. Owen, Robert G. Penner, Cat Rambo, K.M. Rice, and Edward Willett; poetry from Jane Yolen; and additional stories by Cory Doctorow, K. Eason, Walter Jon Williams, and F. Paul Wilson. Among those authors are several international bestsellers, as well as winners and nominees for every major science fiction and fantasy literary award. All of the authors were guests during the third year of The Worldshapers, where Willett interviews other science fiction and fantasy authors about their creative process. Backers' rewards offered by the authors include numerous e-books, signed paperback and hardcover books (including limited editions), Tuckerizations (a backer's name used as a character name), commissioned artwork, original poetry (from Jane Yolen), audiobooks, opportunities for online chats with authors, short-story critiques, and more. The Kickstarter campaign can be found at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/edwardwillett/shapers-of-worlds-volume-iii. The campaign goal was $12,000 CDN. Most of those funds will go to pay the authors, with the rest going to reward fulfillment, primarily the editing, layout, and printing of the book, which will be published in both ebook and trade paperback formats by Willett's publishing company, Shadowpaw Press (www.shadowpawpress.com). The special Kickstarter edition for backers will be followed by a commercial release this fall. Stretch goals are simple: for every $5,000 over the goal the campaign raises, the authors will be paid one cent a word more. Shapers of Worlds Volume III is a follow-up to Shapers of Worlds, successfully Kickstarted in 2020, and Shapers of Worlds Volume II, Kickstarted last year. Shapers of Worlds included new fiction from Tanya Huff, Seanan McGuire, David Weber, L.E. Modesitt, Jr., John C. Wright, D.J. Butler, Christopher Ruocchio, Shelley Adina, and Edward Willett, plus reprints from John Scalzi, Joe Haldeman, David Brin, Julie E. Czerneda, Fonda Lee, Gareth L. Powell, Dr. Charles E. Gannon, Derek Künsken, and Thoraiya Dyer. Shapers of Worlds Volume II featured new fiction from Kelley Armstrong, Marie Brennan, Helen Dale, Candas Jane Dorsey, Lisa Foiles, Susan Forest, James Alan Gardner, Matthew Hughes, Heli Kennedy, Lisa Kessler, Adria Laycraft, Ira Nayman, Garth Nix, Tim Pratt, Edward Savio, Bryan Thomas Schmidt, Jeremy Szal, and Edward Willett, plus stories by Jeffrey A. Carver, Barbara Hambly, Nancy Kress, David D. Levine, S.M. Stirling, and Carrie Vaughn. As I said before Edward is an amazing person. If you want to to contact Edward on social media...all you have to do is find Edward Willett. Therefore, Edward is available for interviews, media appearances, speaking engagements, and/or book review requests. Please contact mickey.creativeedge@gmail.com by email or by phone at 403.464.6925. Author, editor and kung-fu mathematician James Alan Gardner joins us in the latest episode of the podcast! Jim starts off by talking about how comics were his first speculative fictional love, especially Marvel's The Avengers and DC's Crisis on Earth One! and Crisis on Earth Two!, leading eventually to science fiction like Heinlein's juveniles, and later, in university, to fantasy by Tolkien and Stephen R Donaldson, and horror by Stephen King. We talk about his decision to study Math at university, and how a student work internship in Toronto with nothing to do at night gave him the opportunity to start developing his abilities as a writer. Jim tells us about how a writing workshop in Banff allowed him to further hone his skills and find his own voice, and we later discuss how this differed from his experience at Clarion. We also talk about Jim's early work writing science fictional stage plays and radio plays, like Curio (a paranormal investigative series predating The X-Files) and Percy Pulsar, Space Accountant. And he discusses his first prose science fiction stories that were published. Coming back to superheroes, we talk about Jim's novel All Those Explosions Were Someone Else's Fault — a story pitting metahumans against vampires, werewolves and other paranormal monsters. And he teases its upcoming sequel, They Promised Me the Gun Wasn't Loaded, and the two other novels he's working on in the series. Jim also gives some hints about a haunted house novel he's developing. Our interview took place in October 2018 at the annual Vancouver Science Fiction, Fantasy & Games Convention (VCon). Who needs kids, anyway? This episode features "The Children of Crèche" by James Alan Gardner (jamesalangardner.com). Originally an entry in the 1989 Writers of the Future Contest (where it won Grand Prize) and later anthologized in Gardner's 2005 book, Gravity Wells, this story is about an art critic who comes to an isolated colony of artists able to flourish artistically because they didn't have to take care of children.  After reading (dramatizing?) the story, AE and girlfriend Mona (@sewagainsthegrain) discuss what happens to art when its creation comes from something terrible. Some of the music comes from Looperman (looperman.com), specifically users Garuketo, sushilbawa, MINOR2GO, and CallMeKing. Otherwise, the source of Music: http://www.purple-planet.com. Great thanks to them for providing that royalty free. Follow the show on Facebook (@Skiffilypodcast) and Twitter (@SkiffilyPodcast). Mark Lefebvre interviews James Alan Gardner and Spider Robinson, co-editors of the Tesseracts Twenty: Compostela anthology.  Compostela means “field of stars” and is most commonly known from the Santiago de Compostela, which, for more than 1,000 years, has attracted pilgrims to walk to the cathedral that holds St. James the apostle's relics. The stories in this anthology in their own way tell the tale of futuristic travelers who journey into the dark outer (or inner) reaches of space, searching for their own connections to the past, present and future relics of their time.
