We're chatting with Kelley Armstrong, author of the FINDING MR. WRITE. Join this lively conversation! ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Kelley Armstrong believes that experience is the best teacher, even though she has been told that this shouldn't apply to writing her murder scenes. In order to craft her books, she has studied aikido, archery, and fencing, even though she admits to not being very skilled at any of them. In addition, she has crawled through very shallow cave systems and climbed halfway up a mountain before deciding to turn back. However, she does consider herself an expert coffee drinker and a true connoisseur of chocolate chip cookies.

The first chapter can make or break a reader's engagement with a story. We as writers must craft brilliant opening pages in order to hook those picky readers, so let's study the stories of others to see how they do it! The opening line of A Rip Through Time by Kelley Armstrong floored me: "My grandmother is dying, and I am getting coffee." Immediately I and any other reader who's coped with family death could relate to this protagonist. We don't know if she's fleeing the emotions, flippant about the ordeal, or somewhere in between, but many of us have had that mundane mixed with the monumental in ways we may or may not prefer. The opening pages proceed to break down that our protagonist, Mallory is a homicide detective and that she is in Edinburgh to be with her grandmother in her final days. The rest of the family is still in the United States, so relations are strained with phone calls and obligations. I was 100% in with this protagonist, having been in that position myself. Armstrong utilizes the first-person limited POV well, establishing this character's inner conflict between her no-nonsense approach to life and the emotional weight of her grandmother's impending death. This is not why I first picked up this novel, however. The dust jacket promises time travel, so I was also looking for hints of that time travel and was rewarded in the first five pages. Mallory specifically mentions she is not a student of history, but that she and her grandmother would occasionally visit the more "macabre" sites of Edinburgh. My only real qualm with this book is that in five pages Mallory is about to get into trouble, but for some reason is not prepared as she would be on any given day in the United States; for instance, she's jogging at night in Edinburgh, but she does not have her knife that she carries with her while jogging in the States. Why? She doesn't know how to call for help in Scotland. She's been visiting Scotland all her life and doesn't know the emergency number? Such forgetfulness seems completely out of character; yes, we've only known this character for a few pages, but from what we've seen earlier, this just doesn't add up. Frankly, I think the forgetfulness is a cheat to ensure the time travel occurs, but I'll have to keep reading to find out. And what will you, fellow creative, learn in the first five pages? Let's find out!

I had a great opportunity to speak with Edward and it was super awesome. Edward is definitely a superb writer. He has been writing for many years and Edward told Keepin It Real all about his journey and how he became an amazing writer. He has wrote for many people and doesn't mind helping other writers and authors. Edward Willett, an award-winning Saskatchewan-based author of more than sixty books of science fiction, fantasy, and non-fiction for readers of all ages, has launched a Kickstarter campaign on March 8 to fund a third annual anthology featuring some of the top writers of science fiction and fantasy working today, all of whom were guests on his Aurora Award-winning podcast, The Worldshapers (www.theworldshapers.com). Shapers of Worlds Volume III featured new fiction from Griffin Barber, Gerald Brandt, Miles Cameron, Sebastien de Castell, Kristi Charish, David Ebenbach, Mark Everglade, Frank J. Fleming, Violette Malan, Anna Mocikat, James Morrow, Jess E. Owen, Robert G. Penner, Cat Rambo, K.M. Rice, and Edward Willett; poetry from Jane Yolen; and additional stories by Cory Doctorow, K. Eason, Walter Jon Williams, and F. Paul Wilson. Among those authors are several international bestsellers, as well as winners and nominees for every major science fiction and fantasy literary award. All of the authors were guests during the third year of The Worldshapers, where Willett interviews other science fiction and fantasy authors about their creative process. Backers' rewards offered by the authors include numerous e-books, signed paperback and hardcover books (including limited editions), Tuckerizations (a backer's name used as a character name), commissioned artwork, original poetry (from Jane Yolen), audiobooks, opportunities for online chats with authors, short-story critiques, and more. The Kickstarter campaign can be found at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/edwardwillett/shapers-of-worlds-volume-iii. The campaign goal was $12,000 CDN. Most of those funds will go to pay the authors, with the rest going to reward fulfillment, primarily the editing, layout, and printing of the book, which will be published in both ebook and trade paperback formats by Willett's publishing company, Shadowpaw Press (www.shadowpawpress.com). The special Kickstarter edition for backers will be followed by a commercial release this fall. Stretch goals are simple: for every $5,000 over the goal the campaign raises, the authors will be paid one cent a word more. Shapers of Worlds Volume III is a follow-up to Shapers of Worlds, successfully Kickstarted in 2020, and Shapers of Worlds Volume II, Kickstarted last year. Shapers of Worlds included new fiction from Tanya Huff, Seanan McGuire, David Weber, L.E. Modesitt, Jr., John C. Wright, D.J. Butler, Christopher Ruocchio, Shelley Adina, and Edward Willett, plus reprints from John Scalzi, Joe Haldeman, David Brin, Julie E. Czerneda, Fonda Lee, Gareth L. Powell, Dr. Charles E. Gannon, Derek Künsken, and Thoraiya Dyer. Shapers of Worlds Volume II featured new fiction from Kelley Armstrong, Marie Brennan, Helen Dale, Candas Jane Dorsey, Lisa Foiles, Susan Forest, James Alan Gardner, Matthew Hughes, Heli Kennedy, Lisa Kessler, Adria Laycraft, Ira Nayman, Garth Nix, Tim Pratt, Edward Savio, Bryan Thomas Schmidt, Jeremy Szal, and Edward Willett, plus stories by Jeffrey A. Carver, Barbara Hambly, Nancy Kress, David D. Levine, S.M. Stirling, and Carrie Vaughn. As I said before Edward is an amazing person. If you want to to contact Edward on social media...all you have to do is find Edward Willett. Therefore, Edward is available for interviews, media appearances, speaking engagements, and/or book review requests. Please contact mickey.creativeedge@gmail.com by email or by phone at 403.464.6925. New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong believes experience is the best teacher, though she's been told this shouldn't apply to writing her murder scenes. My question is: can you suggest a mystery set in any of the remaining states? They are Alabama, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Utah. I’d like to accomplish this using unique authors for each state, so another Grisham, for example, would not work. Any kind of mystery will do, preferably somewhere in the broad middle between cloying cozy and gruesomely gory. I included my list so far for reference. Thank you! -Suzanne 2. What are your favorite books set in Mexico? I just read Gods of Jade and Shadow and I loved it…and then I read Mexican Gothic, which I also loved up until the point where it made me gag (so much squick). Anyway, reading Silvia Moreno-Garcia has really piqued my interest in Mexico as a setting, and I’d love some recommendations for further reading. Thank you!  -Sara 3. For me, COVID art has been a really helpful way to cope in the last year whether it be music, TV, or written works that deal with pandemic realities head on. Because I work in the restaurant industry, I experienced only a very short quarantine period before being back out in the world, and I think I appreciate the aspect of getting on with life in the face of the ongoing trauma and fear and still finding plenty of joy in small moments. The only book I’ve found dealing directly with COVID (aside from specifically scientific stuff, which I’m far less interested in) is Intimations by Zadie Smith. What else is out there?  Thanks! -Carol 4. I’m looking for a recommendation for two very different sub genres of thriller. I recently read City of the Lost by Kelley Armstrong and it reminded me a little bit of The Blinds by Adam Sternbergh. I wondered if you know of any other books like this “remote town, cut off from the rest of the world, group of people living there who have to be self sufficient but all have lots of secrets and a murder happens.” I also recently read One by One by Ruth Ware and I wasn’t a fan, I’m not looking for stranded people, as much as a group that chose to go live remotely and cut off from the world. Second, I’m currently reading The Seven Doors by Agnes Ravatan and I really like the Scandinavian setting. I also love the “is there something supernatural or is this just a thriller element?” The other book I loved similar to this was I Remember You: A Ghost Story by Yrsa Siguroardottir. This also had the remote Scandinavian setting with the “maybe” supernatural something happening. Any help in these two areas would be awesome!   -Heather 5. I love the show. I would really love a recommendation on rotten food I am not talking about the Netflix show, I would love if it had a variety of foods that as human beings we eat that are disturbing to others but as a culture it is acceptable as well as the process of how this came to be. For instance, where did we get the idea of cheese and how it was safe to eat or how balut became delicacy to eating casu marzu or even monkey’s brains. I want to find a book on all these fascinating foods and how they came to be introducing into a culture as well as an acceptable food something from all cultures. -Grace 6. I recently finished reading Mem by Bethany C. Morrow and really loved it and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. What I loved about it is how it discusses the importance of memories regardless of how bad they may seem/ Mixed with the sc-fi, alternate history elements, and the amazing writing, this book is just everything I ever needed! Do you have any book recs with similar vibes/themes? Please, only fiction, and preferably under 350 pages. I also wanted to say that I really love this podcast and that I discovered many of my favorite books because of it. Keep it up! -Passant 7. I am looking for some book recommendations about marriages that are struggling in a fictional setting. Struggles that are not related to affairs or already at divorces door. I want to see the internal dialogue/conflict and how two people navigate a marriage that’s not full of love anymore and can hopefully come back from that. Thank you so much for all the hard work you guys do to help us readers find what we’re looking for! You are much appreciated and needed -Alexis Books Discussed Alabama: The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins Utah: The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff (cw: homophobia) Kingdom Cons by Yuri Herrera, transl Lisa Dillman The Hummingbird’s Daughter by Luis Alberto Urrea (tw: rape, child abuse) The Premonition by Michael Lewis Together, Apart, by Erin A. Subscribe to the podcast via RSS here, or via Apple Podcasts here. The show can also be found on Stitcher here.   Feedback The Maze at Windermere (Sibyl from Insiders) Strange Practice (Sara M from Insiders)   Questions 1. I’m looking for a wintertime book that is atmospheric and immersive that will make me feel the harshness of winter and want to cuddle up with my book and hot chocolate. I’m not looking for something heartwarming, just something reflective of the cold weather and set during Christmastime if possible. The only book I can think of that is similar to the reading experience I’m thinking of is The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. Thanks! --Kathleen   2. Just want to say I love the podcast and also love “All The Books!” too and listen to both religiously. My to-read list has now exploded exponentially so thanks. So much so that I’m considering taking a less interesting but better paid job just to fund my girlfriend’s and my reading and library building obsession. After a brief year or so hiatus from reading, my now girlfriend got me back into reading in a big way. I’m hoping to find a book for her for Christmas (or whenever) to inspire her in return. Her favourite books are: The Magicians Trilogy by Lev Grossman, World War Z – Max Brooks Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman And (of course): Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban She also really likes the look of quirky horror books like Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero and is really into books with realistic female portrayal and which aren’t washed with male only lead characters. Other than that she’s hoping to write a thesis on apocalyptic fiction, so obviously she loves that too! Thank you in advance! --Henry   3. I am looking for a book for my father in law and my father in law's partner. My father in law likes inspirational books that can also be applied to business. His partner is kind of a Cowboy, I was thinking of a book about the outdoors or a contemporary book about cowboys. If you could help I would greatly appreciate it, especially for the cowboy. --Gene   4. I am starting to look for book gifts for the holidays and need help finding a book for one friend in particular. She really loves jigsaw puzzles, so I'm wondering if there are any books you've enjoyed that include a female character who loves jigsaw puzzles. Something like The Friday Night Knitting Club but for puzzlers maybe? Does such a thing exist? Thanks! --Jeanne   5. I am a newish listener. I discovered the book riot podcasts this summer and I have been loving them. Recently I have been making my way through your archives. I love listening to your recommendations and always secretly hope to hear books I also recommend or have at least read. Finally my request. I have been meaning to do this request ever since I started listening to your podcast. If this is too tight of a deadline, I could always use your recommendations for next Christmas. As you might have guessed I am obsessed with books. I love sharing what I am reading or hearing about what others are reading. Christmas is a great time to share this passion. My dad and my twin niece and nephew are the ones that I have a request for. Dad: A lot of my conversations with my parents are around the books we are reading. My mom is part of a book club but I feel through the years my dad and I have sort have started our own informal book club. One of the times my dad visited me he borrowed one of my many bookmarks and wrote a recommendation list on the back, some of those books were "Trinity" Leon Uris, "Sometimes a Great Notion" Ken Kesey, "Dune" Frank Herbert, "Steppenwolf" by Herman Hesse, and "Bean Trees" by Barbara Kingsolver. One of our favourite authors is Richard Wagamese and we both admire Wab Kinew but my dad struggled with his memoir. He enjoys books that spark conversation and he has an interest in First Nations as he is living in an area that is dominantly First Nations (hence Richard Wagamese and Wab Kinew) but he is also interested in other topical issues. He has read Naomi Klein (found it a bit dense), The Best Laid Plans Terry Fallis andI got him Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari once for Christmas (he read it but had to take breaks). This year my dad is turning 70 (on Christmas) and I am getting him Richard Wagamese's final book but I am hoping through this jumbled paragraph that you might have another recommendation. The twins: The not as long list. My niece and nephew are 6 turning 7 late January. They are still at an age where I feel comfortable buying books instead of giving them gift cards for books. Last year for their birthday I gave them Iggy Peck, Architect and Rosie Revere, Engineer. They loved both these books. They love story time and interacting with the books (asking questions, making observations, telling stories). I was wondering if you had any other books along this vein with kids being creative and building or being artistic. My nephew likes to draw and has a vivid imagination. My niece likes to ask deep questions. Thank you for your amazing show --Jennifer   6. Hi I’m looking for some help, choosing a Christmas present for my Mum. She loves Patricia Briggs and Kelley Armstrong and has also really enjoyed Carrie Vaughn, Ben Aaronavitch, Kim Harrison and Rachel Vincent. Illona Andrews, Melissa Marr, Jim Butcher, Holly Black and Karen Chance got a meh reaction. JR ward and Laurel Hamilton are a no go (too much sex before you get any plot) Over the last decade I’ve also covered Cassandra Clare, Sarah J Maas, Charlaine Harris, Lilith St Crow, Rachel Caine, Julie Kagawa and Richelle mead to varying degrees of success. She has just spent August devouring Seanan McGuire’s Toby Daye series and has moved on to the Cryptozoology set for the autumn. In order to pay her back for introducing me to Anne MacCaffrey when I was 12 I’m looking for something that may have slipped under the radar that she will enjoy. Bonus if there are lots of back catalogue for the author. Thanks for your previous excellent recommendations for my Vegas trip. Fingers crossed you can help me find some new reads for my Mum. --Bex   7. I am looking for recommendations on what I call low urban fantasy. Stories where wizards and golems and all manner of weird things exist in the contemporary world, but rather than being a separate secret world with large-scale organizations, they exist in isolation and largely in secret on the fringes of society. The magic isn't some separate, arcane practice, but rather comes from or integrates everyday practices like poker or watching TV. The wonders themselves tend to be less spectacular and more like fudging reality a bit. The protagonists tend to be morally grey and less than savory. I've only found a couple of works that have scratched this particular itch (the work of Tim Powers, the roleplaying game Unknown Armies), and I would really appreciate any suggestions you could give. I would really like any suggestions that incorporate history into the magic (e.g. the death of Bugsy Siegel as an arcane ritual in Powers' Last Call). Also, books that do not feature straight white guys as the protagonist would be a nice change of pace. Thanks! --Alex   Books Discussed Gunsmoke & Glamour by Hillary Monahan The Voyage Out by Virginia Woolf Two Old Women by Velma Wallis Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield (tw: suicide, domestic violence, harm to children) Fledgling by Octavia E Butler (tw: pedophilia, sort of) Severance by Ling Ma Essentialism by Greg McKeown The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt The Death Safe by Edgar Wallace The Pattern in the Carpet by Margaret Drabble Grace for Gus by Harry Bliss Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice Touched by an Alien by Gini Koch Borderline (The Arcadia Project #1) by Mishell Baker (tw: suicide, self-harm) Half-Resurrection Blues by Daniel José Older Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge by Paul Krueger "Low fantasy" post

Help support this podcast on Patreon! >> It's November--and you know what that means! Or maybe you don't, in which case I'll tell you: it's NATIONAL NOVEL WRITING MONTH! And the way I see it, November is a time to celebrate all writers, not just novelists. That includes you. Get ready for the writing frenzy with episode 027 of Write Now. What is NaNoWriMo, and is it right for me? NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month (because who wants to say that over and over?), and over the years this has become a sort of marathon for writers. The challenge? To write a 50,000-word novel in 30 days, from November 1-30. Yes, that's nearly 1,700 words per day. Yes, that's insane. But it can also be kind of fun, and a great way to get into a daily writing habit. Keeping NaNoWriMo realistic. NaNoWriMo is a positive, inclusive event that encourages everyone to tell a story, and I love it for that. But it can also be incredibly difficult to meet and keep up with the daily word count. That's why I advocate participating in NaNoWriMo without the expectation of winning (i.e., reaching the 50,000 word count by November 30). Instead, set a daily writing goal that is more reasonable for your situation (e.g., 170 words a day, 800 words a day) and focus on reaching that goal every day in the month of November. Thinking about giving it a try? Friend me on the NaNoWriMo site and we'll do this together. And don't forget to enjoy the pep talks by some of your favorite novelists along the way. Book of the week. I'm a huge fangirl of Kelley Armstrong, who writes PNR (paranormal romance) for adults. So when I saw she'd published a YA series, I was curious to see how it would differ. The Gathering by Kelley Armstrong is the tale of 16-year-old Maya -- or at least it's the beginning of her tale. Because as much as I adored Maya's character (for once a whip-smart, funny, and likable heroine so much unlike Bella Swan), I had a hard time grappling with the fact that I was essentially reading 25% or 33% of a story. I love YA series, and I love cliffhangers. But I have really little patience with partially-told stories. A full book's worth of story should establish expectations that it then follows up on. If it ends on a cliffhanger, that's fine, as long as the reader feels satisfied (if tense, and excited for the next installment) by the final page. But with The Gathering, none of my expectations were met or fulfilled, and the abrupt, anticlimactic ending wasn't a cliffhanger so much as a "meh." It wasn't enough to lure me in to buying the next book (of which there are currently three). Keep up-to-date with my book-related adventures on Goodreads. Tell me your thoughts. Kelley Armstrong, New York Times Bestselling author Kelley Armstrong is interviewed by Kobo's Nora Parker about the hot serialized summer release CITY OF THE LOST. In the discussion, Nora and Kelley discuss:   How Kelley has always enjoyed the serialized format and how the project came about at the request of her Canadian publisher The changes required to the finished manuscript in order to optimize it for the serialized format (including the fun “previously on” snippets that Kelley has always enjoyed that are like the one minute clips you get on a serialized television program) How Kelley credits her agent for the underlying idea behind CITY OF THE LOST with the comment “enough people in the US go missing each y ear to populate a small town” Kelley's preference for setting and how if she CAN logistically set something in Canada, she will. (ie, in the setting of this novel in the Yukon rather than Alaska) Building a character like Casey Duncan who is both sympathetic and complex by using such an intriguing opening line “I killed a man.” The emphasis on the different forms of female relationships in this novel rather than just a simple BFF type friendship and how that made the book more interesting to read How CITY OF THE LOST began as a NaNoWriMo project about 3 years earlier and the various re-writes Kelley engaged in to get the novel to its final state How Kelley LOVES writing and has become accustomed to write every single day, even when she is on vacation The “Secrets” YA project and Kelley's continued experimentation with form, including novels, short stories, novellas, graphic novels The manner by which characters and their background come to Kelley as she is building characters and their back-story How writing characters who are not similar to Kelley has become easier over the years (and, for example, how Elena, the hero of her first novel, was similar to Kelley in many ways) and the original fears of whether or not she could get the POV correct How Kelley uses the writing of short stories between novels as a pallet cleanser for getting into a different character's perspective Her love of research and how it can be something Kelley gets willingly lost within The interview is followed by a commentary discussion between Kobo Writing Life Director Mark Lefebvre who interviews Director of Merchandising, Nathan Maharaj regarding the huge success of CITY OF THE LOST. Nathan breaks down the various elements that made it such a hit and the two talk about: What Nathan does at Kobo and the responsibility of the global merchandising team How Penguin Random House Canada approached Kobo with the idea for promoting a new serialized Kelley Armstrong novel and why the pitch was appealing to the merchandising team (Six parts published in six consecutive weeks from a key name Canadian author) The permanent low price of Volume 1 at 99 cents as “on ramp pricing” and a way to get as many people into the series funnel and the remainder of the volumes (5 through 6 at $2.99) How the cover design's strong visual coherence established an extremely strong branding The importance of metadata in setting up a series, including the “series drawer” on Kobo's item page and the automated guidance that allows Kobo to help readers move along to the next book in a series How, prior to the launch of this series, the entire series was produced to completion and ready to go and set up for pre-order, so once it was launched all of the calls to action to keep readers going through the series were all in place Stephen King's unfinished serialized “The Plant” which he released in 2000 via six blog installments How, if you consider CITY OF THE LOST as a single volume in terms of sales, it sits among one of the most bestselling titles on Kobo in Canada this year How the branding on this project down-played the “brand” of Kelley Armstrong and played up the branding of the series itself, so as not to confuse Kelley's existing fans and to entice completely new and unique fans Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the hugely popular "City of the Lost" series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets. You can find out more about her on her website, Facebook and Twitter.

First Story:  “The Teashop” by Zoran Zivkovic Miss Greta was delighted to see a teashop across the street from the entrance to the railway station. The train she’d arrived on had been a quarter of an hour late, but the train she was meant to take for the rest of her trip had left on time. The next possible train wouldn’t leave for around two-and-a-half hours. She could have spent that time reading in the waiting room, but that didn’t seem very appealing.   Zoran Živković was born in Belgrade, former Yugoslavia, in 1948. In 1973 he graduated from the Department of General Literature with the theory of literature, Faculty of Philology of the University of Belgrade; he received his master’s degree in 1979 and his doctorate in 1982 from the same school. In 2007, Živković was made a professor in the Faculty of Philology at his alma mater, the University of Belgrade, where he now teaches Creative Writing.
