Sustainability Now - exploring technologies and paradigms to shape a world that works
Featuring Molly Burhans, environmental advocate and Founder of GoodLands Imagine harnessing the vast resources of one of the world's largest landowners to combat climate change and promote social justice. This is precisely the visionary work of Molly Burhans, an American cartographer, data scientist, and environmental activist who is transforming how the Catholic Church—and potentially other major landholders—responds to our planet's most pressing sustainability challenges. At just 26, Molly founded GoodLands, an organization dedicated to mobilizing the Church's extensive landholdings for ecological conservation and community benefit. She spearheaded the creation of the first unified digital global map of the Catholic Church, a groundbreaking project unveiled at the Vatican in 2016, which revealed the immense potential for environmental stewardship embedded within the Church's properties—estimated to exceed the combined size of France and Spain. Molly's innovative use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology has not only illuminated the Church's carbon footprint and conservation opportunities but also set the stage for strategic, mission-aligned land use on a global scale. Her extraordinary contributions have earned her numerous accolades including: being named a United Nations Young Champion of the Earth, an Ashoka Fellow, National Geographic Emerging Explorer, Sierra Club Earth Care Laureate, one of Encyclopædia Britannica's “20 Under 40 Shapers of the Future” and many more. In addition to a Master's in Ecological Design from the Conway School and her work on projects, advocacy, and creative initiatives, Molly is an adjunct professor of Urban Design at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. With a deep personal commitment to her faith, Molly embodies a new generation of leaders who are leveraging technology, data, and visionary thinking to create sustainable solutions.Today, she stands at the intersection of ecology, technology, and spirituality, demonstrating how innovative approaches to land management can have profound implications for environmental sustainability and social justice worldwide.

We left our last episode wondering about the costs of building a house with earth or clay materials. Turns out it's cheap! So if it's cheap? Have more people jumped on the opportunity to build this way and why hasn't it taken hold in urban settings? To answer these questions, We follow up with Miguel Angel Perez an earthbuilder from Baja, and talk about the costs of earthbuilding and chat with Rachel Formanek, a New Yorker who moved from California to Baja to find better and affordable living conditions. Lastly, we sit down with Alex Ruiz, director of urban planning in Tecate, and ask for his take on the viability of earth building in city settings. Today, I want to discuss a concept that's been on my mind lately: what it truly means to be a reality distortion shaper. This idea was inspired by Steve Jobs' infamous "reality distortion field" - his almost mythical ability to make people believe in the impossible and, through sheer force of vision, bring ideas to life.As I unboxed my new iPad Air and installed iOS 17, I couldn't help but reflect on how far we've come from Apple's beginnings. The evolution of Apple, and now Apple Intelligence, is another chapter in the legacy Jobs left behind—a legacy built on thinking differently, on bending reality to the will of a powerful idea.Jobs' reality distortion field wasn't just about charisma or leadership. It was a powerful fusion of attitude and action. And it's this combination that defines what I call "reality distortion shapers." They're the ones who break new ground, challenge norms, and refuse to accept the limitations that the world presents. And here's the thing—it wasn't just Jobs who had this ability. Throughout history, we've seen people like Elon Musk, Walt Disney, Nikola Tesla, and Oprah Winfrey exhibit this same characteristic. What they all share is a deep belief that reality can be shaped by their ideas, their attitudes, and most importantly, their actions. This spirit of innovation is perfectly captured in Apple's "Here's to the Crazy Ones" campaign. It celebrated those who think differently—the ones who push boundaries, who disrupt the status quo, who see possibilities where others see limitations. This message resonates even more deeply today, in a world grappling with what many call a polycrisis—multiple global challenges unfolding simultaneously. In the face of constant negativity from doom-mongers and naysayers, it's crucial to remember that each of us has the power to shape reality through our beliefs, our optimism, and our actions. We can either embrace pessimism, letting it define our future, or we can choose optimism, believing that tomorrow can be better than today.Optimism is the fuel that accelerates this process. Without that deep-seated belief that things can change, that the impossible can be achieved, no action will ever take off. It's this combination—of vision, belief, and action—that compounds over time, creating something far greater than what we started with. Each of us can shape reality by harnessing the interplay between our thoughts and our actions. Guests like Jon Alexander and Gavin Fernie Jones do this. The reality distortion shapers of the world aren't afraid to push boundaries and reject limitations. They don't just dream big—they act. And through those small, consistent steps, they bring their vision to life, pulling others along with them. So, as you go through your day, ask yourself: what reality do you want to shape? What action can you take, no matter how small, that moves you closer to your vision? And most importantly, do you believe—truly believe—that you can bend reality in your favor? If there's any truth to the idea that what we think manifests in the world around us, then it's on us—each of us—to think differently. To embrace optimism, not just for ourselves, but for the collective good. Because the future we create starts with the thoughts, feelings, and actions we put into motion today.Remember, as Jobs and Apple have shown us time and again—those who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do. The truth is, you're already shaping reality. So I ask: what reality are you shaping? And...What action can you take right now that pushes us all toward a better future? Hosted on Acast. Our friends and community become life-shapers to us. So, who, in your life are helping to shape you and push you to be the best that you can be? Not everyone in your life will be your coach, advocate or cheerleader! In the Bible, Amos 3:3 asks the question, “Can two walk together, unless they agree?” Many times, it's healthy to respectfully disagree with a friend. But this is never acceptable if this person is hindering your growth in Christ. If you're in a negative relationship that is holding you back or pulling you down, you may need to cut ties. Seek positive relationships with people who support, grow and challenge you to be the best version of who God created you to be.

In this episode of the Psych in Business podcast, your host, Dr. Ernest Wayde delves into the Belbin Team Role model, a concept developed by psychologist Dr. Meredith Belbin in the 70s to understand team dynamics and enhance team effectiveness.Dr. Belbin identified nine roles crucial for team success: Resource Investigator, Team Worker, Coordinator, Plant, Monitor Evaluator, Specialist, Shaper, Implementer, and Completer Finisher. These roles were derived from factors such as personality, mental ability, experience, role learning, and field constraints. To simplify, these roles fall into three categories: action-centered roles, people-centered roles, and thinking or analytical-centered roles. Dr. Wayde walks us through each category and role, highlighting strengths and challenges. In action-centered roles, Completer Finishers are meticulous but may struggle with delegation. Implementers are disciplined and reliable but resistant to change, while Shapers are dynamic but can be provocative.Moving to people-centered roles, Coordinators are positive leaders but may appear manipulative. Team Workers are cooperative but may seem indecisive. Resource Investigators are optimistic communicators but can lose focus quickly. In the thinking-centered roles, Specialists bring expertise but may lack people skills, and Plants are creative but may struggle with communication.Dr. Wayde also discusses Belbin's six stages of team development, linking specific roles to each stage. He acknowledges criticism of the model but emphasizes its utility in identifying individual preferences within a team.Listeners are encouraged to explore the Belbin Team Role model further to enhance team dynamics and effectiveness.
